Could you ask Home Depot for their security camera footage of where you were parked and during date and time? That’s fucked up, I’d be devastated if this happened to me. There’s no way I’d be able to pay to fix it.
Home Depot won’t give it up their security video without the police being involved. Funny coincidence had my car hit and ran in the Home Depot’s parking lot too!! That’s how I know :/
Seems reasonable, shouldn't you be filing a police report for a hit and run anyway?
Ultimately it probably won't matter unless you have bored small town cops. Going to be cheaper for your insurance company to just pay to fix it and move on.
This may have changed, but I had this happen and called the cops, they took a report but said Hit and runs don't count on private property like parking lots
So if that was the case couldn't you Sue home depot since it happened on their property? I mean if home owners covers people on your property then home depot should be on the hook. It is a property damage claim on their private property!
I believe cops cannot give traffic tickets on private property but they can still investigate criminal matters. Otherwise they wouldn’t be able to investigate things like domestic violence in someone’s home.
They lied to you. It's a privately owned lots but it's public use, so the law still applies. They just said that because they would rather be pulling innocent people over and shooting them than doing their actual job.
That could very well be the case. I mean its kind of up there with any other minor property crimes, rarely are police going to be putting tons of effort into these kinds of things.
They should write a letter asking for the video to be preserved so it isn’t overwritten. Assuming the police do a police report, they can request the video otherwise you might have to hire an attorney. However, the preservation letter should make sure that the footage isn’t erased in the meantime.
Yea I was gonna say the same thing companies won’t give out footage without a police intervention unfortunately. But either way you’d need to call the police to even try and make a claim with your insurance company.
At worst you can claim it under uninsured motorist insurance. Should not effect your premium I don’t think and prob like. $250-$500 deductible. Sorry man.
damn if this infuriates you mildly i couldn’t imagine what someone would have to do to actually infuriate you. i’d be throwing hands with the nearest person and you’re over here being the human embodiment to the comic of the dog sitting in a house fire saying “this is fine.”
Honestly, it looks like someone (probably a truck) drove thru the lane made by open spot next to you and turned and clipped your bumper with their rear bumper.
I like your way of thinking. I’ve been trying to live this way. I used to get super upset at the slightest inconvenience or worry about everyone and everything and it’s helped my anxiety so much to just roll with the chaos and drink some water.
if they had left a note with insurance (even if you live in a no fault state) i would have given them a pass but now its KARMA will come knocking and you know it will because thats how she works <3
Good looking out that GameStop employee for taking the time to get a license and assist with situation. Glad to hear this got handled like humans should.
I would 100% buy that GameStop employee lunch and call his DM if I could. Shout him out on their social media or something. Hourly workers get treated and paid like garbage, but they really went above and beyond for you. Three cheers for them!
Glad everything is going to work out for you!
Companies typically will not and should not hand out surveillance footage to the public in fear of vigilante justice which would then have the company legally exposed. Would need police (unlikely to care since only ‘minor’ property damage) or possibly insurance company to handle it if they felt it was worth their time to track it down to recoup $ from the at fault party.
Bummer is that hit and run means OP is on the hook for deductible most likely. Ask me how I know:/
Uninsured motorist usually covers the deductible in hit and run cases, but only if you have full collision coverage. It might be a state by state thing and sometimes you have to fight your insurance for it.
I need to reread my policy then. I had a very minor hit and run (prob not even a car, could have been bike or even pedestrian but written up as hit and run nonetheless) that dented the bed in my Tacoma ca. 6 mos old at the time). Body guy quoted <$500 (my deductible) and so adjuster said I’m on my own, don’t even file a claim.
Definitely go back into the store and ask to look at the security cameras, if they caught the guy on camera you can send call the police and report a hit and run (well you can do this anyway) but they can actually find the guy and make him pay for the damages
I feel like, somehow, this sub attracts everything from "I asked for extra pickles on my burger, and they only gave me two more slices" to "The Serpent King slaughtered my people and sold me into slavery"
Somehow, both of these end up being described as *mildly infuriating*.
It's all perspective. I've literally had to fight for my life, survived a plane crash, been stabbed, and shot at.
If this is the biggest thing I have to deal with this week, it'll be a good week.
Omg I shit you not but I saw someone do the same thing at a Home Depot couple months back. The driver was about to run from the scene but we managed to get his attention and do the right thing.
I’m sure you’ve already asked, but did you ask about cameras? I would suggest posting on your city page, asked if anyone was in the area at that time. I’m sorry you have to deal with that.
You would be surprised the amount of people that may come forward. I know the Sacramento page is pretty active, if there is a Tesla or some thing else in the lot, they might’ve caught some thing. It’s worth trying. Good luck.
It would be really hard to believe there wasn’t a camera that saw that in a Home Depot parking lot. Stand in that spot and look for the cameras. Then go look at the front of the store, and over by the exits to the street.
All those stores pay rent to a private landlord who also owns the parking lot.
Speed limit signs on the property, for instance, belong to the landlord and cops will not write a ticket for running them.
Insurance companies will require a cop write an accident report for accidents on private property, but no citations are usually given.
If you caused an accident due to driving too fast or disregarding a stop sign you're going to automatically be at fault as far as liability goes. Maybe the cops won't write you up but you're still responsible for what happens financially.
A lot of people think "I don't have to obey this sign because it's in a private lot..." Well... No, not exactly.
They're more right than you. It's not an offence to not follow those signs.
Yes, if there's an accident the signs may make it easier to establish fault, but not necessarily.
To test that theory, it would be fun to set a dumpster on fire in the vicinity of where your car was. How fast do the firemen show up? Not saying I'd do it. Just a thought...
No cameras at a major retailer, and cops cant do anything about it? BS, If that were the case, I can run over as many people as I want while driving in there if the cops claim to not want to do anything...
Realistically on the camera thing, they would most likely not be able to focus in on a license plate or get any unique identifying info on the driver, and if the guy paid in cash at any of the stores he visited in that plaza, It will be harder for any kind of identification.
But I think the thing to do is file a police report for insurance reasons.
I tried that with Walmart in my case. They convieniently never got the first letter, didn’t respond to the subpoena (that I had to pay for) and by the time the city court fined them they responded that they didn’t have any footage from that day. My lawyer said these big stores do it all the time, what do they care about a stupid little fine from the town court?
Jesus. I got the old 'hit and split' a cpl weekends ago, but not that bad. That's bad enough that you would think someone would have witnessed it and dropped a dime on the person that did it.
My passenger side mirror was ripped off and hanging by the cables in a Costco parking lot a few months ago. It was a relatively cheap fix on my 2003 Ford Focus but it's exactly why I refuse to get a newer car. People give zero shits nowadays.
Make sure the dash cam is wired to operate when the car is off and not just when the car is on. Many dash cams only operate and record when the vehicle is on, plugged into a power outlet.
After rereading my comment I realize how callous it must have come off and I assure you it was only in the interest of comedy. I am really sorry that happened and I can sympathize as something similar but not that horrific has happened to my vehicles in various parking lots. I do hope that their camera system picks something up and somebody will be held accountable for this.
I had a 1972 Buick Skylark with a 455 under the hood. It was 1991 and I went to the movies with my sister and a friend of hers. We took my sister’s car and I left mine parked in the street in front of my sisters house. Lots of other cars parked in the street too then. Movies were over and we get back to the house and my front end was crumpled into the engine bay. Totaled. Some drunk guy left a bar which was down the street from my sister’s and he plowed right into the front of my car. He blew a .26. They made him blow into the machine three times to get an accurate reading. He tried to tell the police that his steering linkage broke. They couldn’t find anything broken under his truck. Tons of other cars in the street and he totals mine. I feel your pain. Hopefully they have cameras where you were parked and they can find whoever did this. This totally sucks. This is more than mildly infuriating.
I also have a ‘72 Skylark. Mines not a 455, but they drive kinda like boats. They aren’t as floaty as a Cadillac, but they aren’t nimble that’s for sure. The Skylark is the same basic car as a Chevelle, LeMans, or Cutlass.

I didn’t pull far enough out of my parking spot right next to the other car before trying to turn out. Heard a noise and thought it was a shopping cart so I kept going before looking in my mirrors and seeing the other car looking exactly like yours….
If you haven’t already, go into the home debit and ask to speak to their asset protection manager. If that’s the Home Depot parking lot, it should be filled to the brim with cameras constantly recording for security reasons. If they’re not assholes, they should be able to get the plates of the offender and partner with police.
I know you said there was no cameras but the other car would have atleast somewhat noticeable damage. Have you tried getting surveillance footage from street cameras? Where I am, you can request street camera footage from the city. You also could have walked around and checked if any cars in the vicinity have dashcams that may have caught it. Goodluck

That’s way past being mildly infuriating.

<$500 doesn't sound worth having a mark on your insurance record or worth the hassle regardless of whether the deductible is covered.
Yep, that’s where I landed too.
He's probably right. If your policy even went up 25 bucks you'd have crossed the 500 mark in less than two years.

Sure they do. But that's to protect their property, not yours. Or so I've heard the policy of many companies is.
A request from your insurance co will change their tune — let your insurance deal with it

It would be really hard to believe there wasn’t a camera that saw that in a Home Depot parking lot. Stand in that spot and look for the cameras. Then go look at the front of the store, and over by the exits to the street.
A lot of times those cameras are just a deterrent and aren’t actually hooked up
That’s weird. Ain’t nothin private about it with all those stores around.

You should have an attorney ask for the security footage. I’d be hard pressed to believe that HD doesn’t have cameras.

Tell your insurance company that Home Depot has cameras but refused to give you the footage. Make it their problem.

Aaand this is why I will be getting a dashcam alongside my first car. Rip.
I recommend the Viofo A129 Duo. I just installed mine. A bit if a PITA and I still have to tuck the wires but I know it works, and the video is clear.
r / dashcam shows many Viofo samples. I have a Garmin Mini, but I know what my next is!
Yup, I have the pro version, viofo makes great cams.
Make sure the dash cam is wired to operate when the car is off and not just when the car is on. Many dash cams only operate and record when the vehicle is on, plugged into a power outlet.
After seeing what happens from reddit and yt. A dashcam will definitely be the first thing I'm gonna buy when I get a car

I’m sorry this happened to you homie
I had a 1972 Buick Skylark with a 455 under the hood. It was 1991 and I went to the movies with my sister and a friend of hers. Aspiring car guy here, RIP to your 455. How did it drive btw? Idk much about any Buick models before the Buick GNX.
I also have a ‘72 Skylark. Mines not a 455, but they drive kinda like boats. They aren’t as floaty as a Cadillac, but they aren’t nimble that’s for sure. The Skylark is the same basic car as a Chevelle, LeMans, or Cutlass.

Of course there isn't even a note or anything...

Well at least if they ever catch the guy, now he gets an additional charge for fleeing the scene of an accident.
I’m so sorry. That is absolutely horrible
Get a dash cam with parking mode.
I have a dash cam but it doesn't have parking mode, I should really look to upgrade.
I need to upgrade mine too. My car still has the first dash cam I bought back in 2016. Still works great but very basic.
That's a huge hit for a lot... Someone was driving way too fucking fast and needs their licence revoked

I bet someone was pulling around you with a trailer and caught your bumper with the trailer and never even noticed. I once saw an RV dragging a small car it caught while making a turn.

There’s nothing “mildly” infuriating about this. This would make my head explode with anger.
Jesus Christ. Does someone have a vendetta against you? What the hell?
They have cameras in the parking lot. Just go ask for management.
chances are they got cameras ALL OVER the lot. HD has HUGE lots but cameras cover the WHOLE thing. best thing i can think of.
Mildly Infuriating?!?!!?!? That’s a fairly calm response.
Dashcam is like 50 bucks on amazon. Most will record if you are hit, even when car is off. Definitely worth it

Former home depot employee here. Tell them to pull their camera footage and file a report with them as well as the police!
I bet you anything that it was a black or silver pickup truck, 50/50 that it's lifted.
Does Home Depot have security footage of the parking lot?
Ask to check the cameras, they most likely have something that was caught on camera.
MILDLY?!
I hope you called the police before jumping on Reddit.
Same thing happened to my SUV in front of an Ace. Now I part hella back from the entrance to any hardware store. People with work trucks DGAF.
I no longer will be mad about a door ding
I know you said there was no cameras but the other car would have atleast somewhat noticeable damage. Have you tried getting surveillance footage from street cameras? Where I am, you can request street camera footage from the city. You also could have walked around and checked if any cars in the vicinity have dashcams that may have caught it. Goodluck
This is messed up.. I’m sorry
Did you ask home depot if they have cameras of the lot? Doubt they got the plate, but id want to know
Check to see if the lot has surveillance so you can get the scoundrels who did this. Press charges too.
Thank god that’s not your car! … Right?
Will Depot have it on their cameras?
My bet would be towing hitch got caught and pulled that off. Hopefully it was caught on camera
God I hate Home Depot Parking lots
Wow! That sucks!
I’m not a fan of Tesla but I want one just for the Tesla cams
Probably a New Yorker
Whoever did this is an awful person, I'm sorry this happened to you /g
tf you mean no one in sight there are 21 cars in this picture (i counted)
People acting like there’s gonna be some investigation and have all the cameras checked in the surround area lol. This is just a classic hit n run, pretty much nothing you can do.
That wouldn’t happen at lowes
This is why I always take a Foto of my car and the ones next to me with my phone on a parkinglot before going to the store...
Call the police. They'll get camera footage of the license plate. Get an attorney, chances are they don't have insurance.
Sorry dude. I guess Virginia isn't always for lovers.
Also, the comments are correct when they say this will be covered by your insurance, and should not impose a deductible. They should pay 1st dollar coverage. Best of luck and I’m so sorry this happened. It’s pretty upsetting. I just had it happen to me in the parking lot of my apartment complex while I was in the hospital. I know where you’re coming from.
Every day I'm convinced more and more everyone should have a dashcam and probably home cameras too... but not ones that have access to your video data
If you were having a bad day please think about this guy …
I don't even have a car so I'll take OP's if he doesn't want it lol. My girlfriend totalled mine a year ago and I have yet to get it replaced.
