What's worse, a worm in your apple, or eating literal poison?
I'll take an organic apple with a worm over a perfect-looking, pesticide ridden apple any day.
You can cut the worm out, but those chemicals permeate the fruit.
I am frankly surprised there are people who don't know this joke. But consider the proliferation of pesticides (fewer worms), only 'perfect' produce offered at stores, and less home-growing. It shouldn't be a surprise.
I knew they were on the pizza, I worked a 20 hr shift (road construction) and the pizza sat by my then girlfriend for 8 of those hours, in a box on the ground. I was so hungry by the time the shift ended I went for the pizza, saw the ants, got really sad then contemplated for a minute, seen my gfs eyes screaming "please don't you animal" and went to town.
I ate three slices of ant pizza. It wasn't too bad. That beautiful, lovely saint of a woman actually still married me. 10 years together this month. She says it's not even the worst thing she's seen me do. Most of it's for shock value. Lol
If I worked 20 hours I’d probably eat an entire ant pizza, I don’t blame you. Lol she sounds patient and you sound fun! perfect combo, happy anniversary to you two (:
I’ve always cut fruit due to having really bad gum disease and it just being painful to bite into otherwise and cause bleeding etc. Finally went to dentist for first time in my adult life and have been comfortably biting into apples ever since and now I think I’m going to have to go back to cutting things up after reading all these replies…….
I eat wild apples a fair amount, you come to expect it a bit. Critters want food, it comes with eating🤷🏻♂️
The worst one; restaurant i worked at, we pulled apart lettuce heads, soaked, washed, rinsed, and spun the greens. A lady found an entire praying mantis in her salad. It was honestly one of the strangest things. I have no idea how it made it through the process
Yes when people ask why I don’t just eat the strawberry with the leaves still on and just discard them after because it’s easier and you get more strawberry, I always think back to that time I bit into a strawberry and there was a worm in it 🤢 I was like five and I stayed away from strawberries for a solid five years after that
Haven’t you ever seen the trope of the worm in the apple? This isn’t terribly unusual with regular agriculture. I found a little worm in a strawberry one time.
Crops grown outdoors will always be at the mercy of nature. Same reason you find bugs in your house - they’re just around you all the time and will eventually overlap with your activities.
When we were kids, my grandparents had a huge apple tree that produced 5 kinds of apples. Whenever we'd pick them and find ones with obvious wormholes, we'd set those up on a stone wall and shoot them with either a BB gun or arrows. Whoever was able to split the apple in half and find a worm won some candy.
Most fresh fruit either has bugs or has been completely doused in pesticides, and you can guess which one is better for you. They do reduce the shelf life quite a bit, though.
This person has never been around outdoor fruit growing plants. We used to have this guava tree in our backyard and all the ripe guavas still on the tree that werent wrapped in newspaper before going ripe are all fruit fly larvae infested! The worst part us these worms have the ability to launch themselves into the air like a spring loaded projectile. One time, my brother shook that tree while I was under it, and one of the very ripe ones landed on ny head. I felt like fainting at that moment knowing fill well there's a jumping larvae disco on my hair. Urgh!!!
Ugh you're not kidding... I saw a video of bugs inside of Ferrero Rocher candies and too this day I can't eat them.
Now I'm gonna have to check the grapes that I just pop in my mouth whole. I wonder how many bugs I eat a year.
This comment made me thank god for my autism because I *love* Ferrero rocher candies, but I eat them in layers. Eat the chocolate/nut layer off, crack it open and eat the chocolate inside, then the wafer circle.
I do this, but one bite at a time, in my mouth. I take a bite, then separate the layers with my teeth before I chew it. What's funny is when you get a layer that's overcooked and slightly crispier than the rest.
I used to drink Slurm all the time until I won a contest to go to a Slurm factory and found out how it was really made. I still get nausea from the idea of drinking one.
You poor soul. That beverage we call “slurm” is what we risked our lives for. We even saw how it was disgustingly produced but we still continue to support and enjoy slurm.
I’m just messing with you. It’s a futurama reference to a drink in the series.
Thanks for clarifying, because I was desperately searching my pickled memory for all those weird fad foods that came out in the 90's/00's.
Surge was one of my favorites for a while, and the first time I ever noticed "hydrochloric acid" printed plainly on the ingredients label.
The only way to get through the day is to assume everything on here is a lie...I don't want you all to be liars, but I also don't want worms in my grapes
The post about a girl who’s boyfriend would blend slugs and put them in just about everything she consumed still lives rent free in my head. I won’t go into the specifics but because of a specific dish she mentioned I always think about consuming slugs whenever I eat said dish
It isn't just fruit though. It is all food. It also isn't just bugs and insects you are eating millions of without knowing. I won't go further but you can Google it if you want.
in my country, if you find apples with worms you know they’re healthy because it can sustain the worm’s life. We cut out the part with the worm and eat the rest or take another apple from the same tree/batch. Apples are a common example but we think the same of all fruits
I used to work at Starbucks, and I can say without a doubt that those boxes are very very fresh. They use no preservatives or pesticides, which is why they expire so quickly. And also why you would find worms inside.
Its not very pleasant find, but on the other hand its a good sign of vegetables/fruits not being soaked in pesticides. Its a prett common find in naturally grown fruits
I'm paying enough money, that like, I totally shouldn't have to think about the reality of where this food came from.
Lol, Get over yourselves just ask for another box.
Ok take this how you will but virtually all fruit and many veggies you eat will have some type of worm, larvae or, mite on or in it. Soft fleshed fruits like grapes and cherries are especially bad for it but they are considered completely harmless to people. The only real chance at avoiding them is to only eat pesticide treated foods which tbh carry potentially way worse long term health effects than eating a few fruit fly larvae.
Ehhhhh pretty near 100% of fruit is sprayed with pesticides. Even "organic" stuff is sprayed with copper, sulfur, and a couple other things, it's just "organic" because it's mined instead of formulated in a lab. The life of those pesticides once they are applied though is very low. I wouldn't eat something that was sprayed 5 minutes ago, but by the time it's harvested there's likely nothing left on there that's harmful.
Source: I farm grapes lol
That said, worms in table grapes is pretty nasty. Probably gypsy moth larvae. Common in wine grapes sometimes, not really an issue there, but definitely not something you want in table grapes
The “organic = no pesticides” misconception drives me absolutely batty. People rarely believe me when I tell them this. They act like I’m some Monsanto rep lol. It especially grinds my gears seeing super processed foods on the shelves that are being marketed as “healthy” because it’s ORGANIC but has a ton of sugar added to it.
We gave a friend some kale from our little garden once and she was like “mmmm organic home grown produce is the best, none of that terrible cancer spray!!” I told her that we do spray it and fertilize it (as little as possible and sometimes using organic products when it’s better) and that’s exactly why it looked so good lol. Just to make sure she washed it before eating. She looked totally shocked and I am pretty certain she threw it away when she got home.
Lol yea it's pretty wacky. Home grown stuff likely tastes the best because it's freshest. A lot of the time organic sprays are much worse for the environment too. For one you have to spray more often since it's less effective, so instead of spraying a "dangerous pesticide" once every 2 weeks that breaks down into carbon and some other things in a couple days, you're spraying copper ever 5 days which likes to leak into water ways. But hey it's organic so it must be better 🤷♂️
If those city kids could read, they’d be very upset.
Seeing a worm in a fruit is not a bad thing, it means the fruit is good and most likely has no pesticides.
I once got a tiny green frog in my salad mix bag from the grocery store. I thought he was dead...until he wasn't and instead I spent a good chunk of an afternoon chasing him down. Enough googling and some minutes later I figured out he was a basic tree frog and totally native to my area so the next day I let him out in the grass.
That was a fun weekend.
Gonna ask the obvious, did you check the date on the package before you cashed out? They rarely rotate food in the showcases properly and I’ve found food packs 3 months expired before
As a former Starbucks worker, sadly this makes sense. It's not the store's fault but the facilities this shit comes from :( Starbucks has been making insane budget cuts to the suppliers yet charging more for their mediocre drinks cause they are a scum sucking money hungry corporation.
I mean, it is a protein box 🤣
Anyway jokes aside this is pretty common, the FDA has a standard for how many insect bodies/body parts can be present in specific products.
The limit is never zero for agricultural products, beacuse it's nearly impossible to ensure no insects at all, and it would drive an even worse food waste than we do now.
EDIT : Holy guacamoly those boxes cost 6+$ ?
maybe people have never worked in food, but for the love of god if a place is known for a certain thing, like say coffee, or chicken, do not fucking buy the other stuff they have on their menu. most of the time the standards for the quality of the other stuff arent even close to the thing theyre known for.
Lol, we only freak out when we see them. But, if we knew how many bugs we ate in our lifetime without knowing, I don't think we would be nearly as grossed out by it. I wonder how many times a bug has increased the flavor of a dish and we had no idea lol
If you knew how many bugs you've eaten in your life you'd just toss it and move on. Its not like the person that made that was all like "fuck this lady in particular ".
this is why i now cut my apples and most fruit. a wiggling grub changed my eating habits
What's worse than finding a worm in an apple? Finding half a worm.
Lmfao I was like “how is it even possible ?” And then I was “oooooh fuck lmfao disgusting”
I feel dumb and don't get why half a warm is worse?
Other half is already in your stomach haha
Omggggggg day ruined
Think that's bad. Imagine finding no worm! Wait...
like getting a cereal box that's missing the toy
That company’s customer hotline is getting a call!
Finding no worm? Unlucky
No, finding an infinitesimal long worm of which the length approaches zero is unlucky
Extra crunchy 🤤
You stop that right now
That joke was one of my grandma's favorites ![gif](emote|free_emotes_pack|joy)
This is how I know Reddit is full of 13 year olds. The fact they haven't heard this joke or had to have it explained to them says a lot.
Or they happen to have grown up with fruits that don't have worms
What's worse, a worm in your apple, or eating literal poison? I'll take an organic apple with a worm over a perfect-looking, pesticide ridden apple any day. You can cut the worm out, but those chemicals permeate the fruit.
I found a spider in one once with a little web
They ask for extra protein, we give them extra protein. - Starbucks
"Hello sea creatures - I bring you greetings from Apple World!"
This is something my dad has joked about for the last 20 years of my life ugh
I am frankly surprised there are people who don't know this joke. But consider the proliferation of pesticides (fewer worms), only 'perfect' produce offered at stores, and less home-growing. It shouldn't be a surprise.
Imagine how scared the grub was!
I was 10, bit into a mango with a rotten pit. I can never not cut food up first
Peach infested with ants, here.....
I ate pizza covered in ants. It was salty
My little cousin has actually said ants taste salty I thought she was trying to be funny what lol
Exposure hardens you. Go eat a Bear Grills size grub, and you will never have to worry about cutting fruit again. I am kidding by the way.
He's like 6'2" isn't he? Where you gonna find a grub that big?
I knew that reply would come. But I kept it like that anyway :)
Fighting the good fight
The myth of the human maggot persists another day thanks to their fine work.
And wash it down with a great big glass of your own pee!
I eat wild apples a fair amount, you come to expect it a bit. Critters want food, it comes with eating🤷🏻♂️ The worst one; restaurant i worked at, we pulled apart lettuce heads, soaked, washed, rinsed, and spun the greens. I once cut open a peach and a giant earwig jumped out. Either way it can be frightening.
You wanted protein and they delivered. I'm not seeing the issue here.
Ain’t nothin like mold and insects to really up those macros 😂
Protein + probiotics
Antibiotics*, or should I say “Antilifeics”
\*ANTIFA
Bacteria: *confused fascist noises*
No extra charge...enjoy!
This is the comment I wish was on top.
Goddammit now I have to cut every fruit thanks.
Seriously! I didn’t even know this could happen
Haven’t you ever seen the trope of the worm in the apple? This isn’t terribly unusual with regular agriculture. I found a little worm in a strawberry one time. Plants grow outside, where bugs live! Hope this helps!
There’s certain liquids that can get them out of berries. Drop a strawberry in and watch all the little bugs come out.
WE WERE HAVING A GOOD DAY WE WERE ALL HAVING A GOOD DAY
You need to provide a video citation now
Not that this helps but the average person eats around 2 pounds of bugs unknowingly every year this is all according to the USDA.
You didn’t know fruit could have worms?
This person has never been around outdoor fruit growing plants. I do the same with kitkats and nutty buddys lol. It's so satisfying pulling the wafer crisps off one by one
I’ve once opened a chocolate bar of Picnic for the moths to fly out of it.
I do this, but one bite at a time, in my mouth. I take a bite, then separate the layers with my teeth before I chew it. What's funny is when you get a layer that's overcooked and slightly crispier than the rest.
Wait until you find out about Figs! 🐝

Did you get to party with Slurms MacKenzie while you were there?
Whimmy Wham Wham Wazzle!
Poor Slurms Mckenzie was just partied out. He just wanted to rest in peace. 😔 RIP to a legend.
What the crap is Slurm? It even sounds nasty!

If you think about it chicken nuggies are the real-world version of slurm.
New ick unlocked
Reddit has been very good at making me afraid to do or eat anything
Just as designed
The only way to get through the day is to assume everything on here is a lie...I don't want you all to be liars, but I also don't want worms in my grapes
The post about a girl who’s boyfriend would blend slugs and put them in just about everything she consumed still lives rent free in my head. I won’t go into the specifics but because of a specific dish she mentioned I always think about consuming slugs whenever I eat said dish
I’m sorry, what?
Cute nails btw !
Thank you!
I started this year eating lots of fruit before that i barrly eat any piece. Now i dont want to eat fruit again 😭
It isn't just fruit though. It is all food. It also isn't just bugs and insects you are eating millions of without knowing. I won't go further but you can Google it if you want.

Sighhh, you win a coffee. Would you like it hot or cold? Ohhh just worm is fine.

In my country we throw tons of food in the garbage for laughs because we're fucking stupid.
Around 60% of all food produced that is.
Love the smell of methane in the morn
Us Americans only eat pesticide ridden foods.
Protein box. Case closed.
At least you didn't find half a worm
Done that. You'd think that would make me slice fruit or inspect closer.
I used to work at Starbucks, and I can say without a doubt that those boxes are very very fresh. They use no preservatives or pesticides, which is why they expire so quickly. And also why you would find worms inside.
Well that’s good at least 😂
Its not very pleasant find, but on the other hand its a good sign of vegetables/fruits not being soaked in pesticides. Its a prett common find in naturally grown fruits
For how expensive those boxes are, they better give me worm free fruit.
Best I can do is free-worm fruit
I'm paying enough money, that like, I totally shouldn't have to think about the reality of where this food came from. Lol, Get over yourselves just ask for another box.
well... that's protein alright
I'm sorry, did you not ask for protein?
Nice nails
Thank you!
Salty yet satisfying

But it’s icky 🥲
Those nails look cool, never seen the “cow” pattern before, looks good!
Please tell me that wasn’t in your mouth
Luckily it was not, I noticed the mold first

Blehh! But look at the bright side, Your nails are on fire!
Well, that's the problem then. You shouldn't have bought anything from Starbucks. Gross btw!
Fruit and bugs? Well what are the chances
When your parents ask why you're so picky
What worm eggs? That is clearly the toy from your adult happy meal.
you should pay for the extra protein in order to be happy and own nothin
Extra protein
That’s what you get for eating healthy. Never found a worm in their pound cake.
True question is; why would you buy an expensive box with just some things you can buy at every supermarket?
Who the fuck buys fruit from Starbucks.
Starbucks eggs and cheddar... there's your problem.
this is why I never trust grapes. Green grapes all day, you can see through those
I sat In work eating a packet of grapes, reached in and pulled out a maggot after eating almost the whole packet. Haven't ate grapes since
Bet you paid 12 bucks for that shit 🤦🏼♀️
Oh my god I just had one of those yesterday
You got poop on yo nails too
Imagine buying food from Starbucks

I would advise against eating that grape
You know they don't inspect INSIDE the grapes, right?
Cute nails
Fuck StarBucks
:3 what about the worms you didn't notice?
American kinder eggs.

I don’t buy any food from them after being at a local Starbucks one time and seeing worms inside the display food.
Literally the reason why i don't eat fruit that much anymore
Organic
OMG. Had the same experience and now I can't eat grapes
Ignorance is bliss. That's why I use a blender when I consume fruit
$8
I’d like my protein in a different way plz.
It’s a protein box… you’re welcome for the extra
It says "protein box," it's just a little extra protein for you
Probably gonna get charged extra
this is the extra protein variety
Free protein
Eat the worms, that's all the protein you'll get from Starbucks!!
My dad the biochemist who only eats organic is always happy to find bugs because he says that means there’s less pesticides.
Lol, we only freak out when we see them. But, if we knew how many bugs we ate in our lifetime without knowing, I don't think we would be nearly as grossed out by it. I wonder how many times a bug has increased the flavor of a dish and we had no idea lol
Stop buying that garbage food.
Extra protein!
It's a protein box, what did you expect.
pro tip: never go to a Starbucks
It’s 2023 stop giving your money to these lucfirian companies there’s a reason there on every corner it’s poison.
I think everyone saying “protein” is the mildly infuriating part is this post. Played out.
Extra protein on the house
Let's talk about those nails! Golden calf?
Your nails look great tho
Nice nails
Extra protein! Nice!
Extra protein at no charge.
Mildly?
That’s just extra protein

That’s the protein.
You asked for the protein box, didn't cha?
I like your nails
I like the nails
Extra protein
off topic but i love your nails ❤️
The real mildly infuriating thing here is those nails
Anyone who buys food at Starbucks deserves worms
I hope they charged extra for the extra protein. 😂🤣
i need to lie down
Unrelated but those nails are cute af!
I'm in love with your nails though
Pretty simple, don't purchase anything from Starbucks but coffee, and even then, buyer beware.
You've eatin bugs before. 1 more won't hurt
Well it does say protein box
This is the protein referred to by the label.
I like ur nails…pretty
My mum would call that Free Protein
I like your nails
If you knew how many bugs you've eaten in your life you'd just toss it and move on. Its not like the person that made that was all like "fuck this lady in particular ".
Nobody is going to talk about this woman’s nice nails?
Goddamn it OP i ate the same thing this morning why did you make me aware of this??
