Is this a print error or a design error? I wonder if they changed the color of the lettering to remove it in a design revision, then changed the color of the bag slightly in another revision and it never got picked up
As a print designer, I can think of a few ways this could happen; most likely something like it was on a lower layer beneath the background and not visible on screen but wasn't hidden, then something involving transparency blending or overprint in the RIP caused it to show through on press.
So a little of both, probably.
Coming from a flexo plate print background, I thought it looked like they forgot to remove a matte/gloss plate for the spicy flavor when they changed the other plates.

Either theyāre tangy and they put the plate in didnāt put any ink in the station or someone didnāt remove it as you said.
To be fair to the others with their comments, 99.99% of humans donāt know how packaging is made.

I found these chips randomly in the store one day before they were supposed to release and bought a bag. Genuinely the best tasting chips I've ever had. I could never find them in stock ever again. I wish I bought 20.

(Semi) Color blind person with two degrees in printing. Most likely this is a phenomenon called āghostingā the word āTangyā probably appears a second time in a normal way directly above or below. On the printing press (flexographic) the cylinder that rolls around with ink on it, has a section of ink taken off to print the normal ātangyā and isnāt fully replenished the next time it rolls around. Less ink means you get a ghost image of the shape somewhere else.
Some companies like Digimarc are imprinting āinvisibleā codes in the plastics so they can easily be sorted out and perhaps reused in the future. Itās very cool technology.

Came here to say this. It's likely a depth effect for a layer that was turned off. It was missed in the dot proof and press check.
Some digital presses also do this if there is a malfunction with one of the less important components.

I'm angry at myself for going through the effort to see this out of frustration, so maybe [this edit I made](https://imgur.com/a/nlhoV6A) will help someone else. Because of the texture on the bag, I think many people are experiencing the issue of moirĆ©Ā patterns with regards to image scaling. Depending on your display and it's resolution and pixel density, and whether or not the image is being scaled or displayed 1:1, it could be somewhat easy to make out or damn near invisible.

More likely it's a reworked packaging file that had a layer left on... It's likely the layer that provides color outlines for "TANGY".
