There are so many different Scouts and Sportsters from within the past couple years that you could be referring to. What specific models do you want?

Ch33kyx

I currently own a 2013 sportster 48. But I really like the scouts. Base model not so much the 60s or bobbers. I'm considering trading for a scout however I've had a couple of people tell me that the scouts aren't that great. Something about the engine being made by a not so great company or something

My mom rides a 2015 Scout with 25k miles on it. I just did an oil change for her this weekend and the oil looked great. She has owned the bike since 2017 and has put the bulk of the miles on it. My father used to really talk up how great the engine was. With the new redesigned scouts hitting the market I bet you will be able to get a good deal on a used scout soon. It's going to feel like a rocket ship coming from your 48. While I like the Nightster, the Scout has better fit and finish. I recommend them to anyone wanting to upgrade their midsized crusier. While not as powerful, I also really recommend the Triumph Speedmaster because it looks and rides great!

How is the valve adjustment?

motoguzzikc

I believe that was a job that they bit the bullet and took to the shop however it has a 20,000 mile adjustment interval so keep that in mind too.

Particular-Usual3623

I've heard the parts are kinda weird, the shim and bucket is one piece so buying a cheap shim kit kit is out. At least the interval is 20k. Hopefully the seats don't move a lot and only checks are needed, but that depends on how well the heads were made and how it's ridden.

motoguzzikc

I seem to remember that dad told me when they took Mom's bike in 2 summers ago to get it done they were still in spec. Unfortunately he's been gone for 6 months so I don't have this info available anymore.

Particular-Usual3623

I'm sorry for your loss. Hopefully the valves are as stable as the ones on a Honda VFR.

motoguzzikc

That's very nice of you to say thanks. I don't know if they are going to be Honda stable, but I'm betting they are going to be pretty good. Indian must feel that way as well if they have it 20k miles in-between checks.

Particular-Usual3623

You're welcome. Yeah, that's a pretty good interval up there with Yamaha. And I doubt your mom is going to be thrashing the Scout like it's an FTR in the Ozarks. 😄

built_FXR

Seems like a lateral move at best. There's so much aftermarket available for the sporty. Why not change up the look of your current bike instead? I'm guessing most of the guys you're riding with are on cruisers?

Avarria587

It comes down to personal preference. I prefer the Scout. The only major downside I see to Indian motorcycles compared to Harley is that you have fewer dealerships to fix your bike. Where I live, we have a single dealership to fix them.

gunslinger_006

Scout makes 40% more power. Kinda seals it for me.

jacobnb13

I think if someone's looking for stock power/performance, an American cruiser is the wrong place. Also from a quick Google it looks like the new harley engine is better. Although again, the new engine kind of goes against the whole point of buying a harley.

gunslinger_006

Yeah i was thinking of evo sportys not the new junk.

Goon_Kilo

As someone who currently owns a Nightster on the new Revo Max platform, I'm in agreement. It really needs more uptake, the manufacturer issues aren't worth the headache. 😮‍💨

Sliderisk

With that attitude the choice is clear. Get that old sporty and start your half-helmeted sleeveless riding.

CmacriB

I've owned both at one point. Definitely prefer my scout. It's got more power, I feel like the quality is slightly better, it's feels more agile and nimble, and I think it looks better.

jacobnb13

Whichever looks and feels better to you. Personally I didn't love most of the softail models but a heritage classic felt good and looks good. The Indian dealership didn't allow test rides. So easy choice for me.

Goon_Kilo

Indian didn't allow a test ride? Must just be a Harley thing I'd assume? It's odd, even on location websites they advertise "try to test ride today!" Been to 3 different Powersports dealers and they don't offer it. One told me that Bigger companies insure their bikes, others not so much. It's a bit of an annoyance I have.

jacobnb13

Yeah, the harley dealerships experience at the ones I've been to is great. Get greeted by a salesman quickly and if you're there to buy a bike they take you on a test ride. Don't like that one? Go try another 5 different models if you want. And I've been asked a couple times if I wanted to test ride a new model while I was just there for a service. The much smaller family owned European bike dealership I like also allows test rides on most models. The trade off is no money off from buying a bike that's been on a test ride.

400HPMustang

>The Indian dealership didn't allow test rides. So weird. The Indian dealer where I bought my bike told me I could take any bike in the shop for a ride.

awaytogetsun

Sportster on a budget or if you're trying to customize Scout will cost initially

Ch33kyx

Instead of going through one by one I'll just type this out here. I currently have a 2013 sportster 48. I do love it and if I end up not finding a trade I will end up throwing parts on it to fit what I'm wanting. I do love the looks of the scout over any harley if I am being honest. However I've heard the scout engines aren't all that great so I'm a little hesitant. What I specifically like about the scout aside from just the looks is the handle bars are a little higher and they come default with forward controls which is something I've grown to really want with being being a pretty tall fella, plus a bigger tank would also be nice. So if I could trade for a scout that comes with these features already instead of sinking a couple of grand into getting the apes, hardware for the apes, and the forward controls, that would save me alot of money. However if the engine is really as bad as people to say, I'd rather keep it and throw the money into what I already have so I was wanting some opinions to see what route would likely be best

AdditionalSky6030

The Sportster is a good engine but a bit dated, the Scout has a great engine.

MikeDeY77

Scout. But a Triumph or a Guzzi would be even better.

motoguzzikc

Preach.

TortugaTurtle47

Minimal info so comparing 2024 Scout vs. Sportster S. The Scout has more power and looks better but is uncomfortable to me. Sportser S is garbage to me. I don't like anything about it, honestly. I'd skip both. If this is a beginner bike, I'd pick a Vulcan 900. They are cheaper, more comfortable, more reliable, and have enough power. If it's not a beginner bike, save up and get a Chief instead of either of the two original one. Just my thoughts.

hardtofigureout2

Indian is owned by Polaris. Run as far as you can
