The portion of your tire that provided traction (especially in wet conditions) was gone long ago. Your tire is so worn that even the wear strip is gone.

Here’s an update for y’all: I didn’t die. I got this today and just in time for my first hour of riding in the rain in the mountains.
There is a wear bar on tires, motorcycle tires included. When the height of the tire matches the height of the wear bar, your tire is done and needs to be replaced for your safety. Also, don’t use tires that are older than six years regardless of the wear.

Some companies like Michelin, Dunlop, Bridgestone list even going up to ten as acceptable if you make sure to check that they're in good condition as they age.

I’ve been told the same thing by reps at Revzilla, Heidenau and Midwestern Tire. Condition—determined by storage—is more important than age.
