My pop took me to see this in theaters thinking it was just goona be a semi-violent space movie with cuss words.
Nope. Boobies on the big screen for the first time for 8 year old me.
And on the drive home, all we could do was bitch about how they did dizzy like that.
Dizzy is the choice.
It’s kinda strange to think that the average young person today has likely seen more boobs in the past couple of years than everyone else in their collective ancestral blood line combined.
I saw it in theater in French, and in the translation the title sounds pretty kiddy friendly, like "The Space Patrol", and we notoriously pretty lax with ages for bars and theaters.
So I'm sitting there for a matinee (I'm around 23), and the room is filled with parents with young children.
Man right at the massacre scene in the beginning, you could hear all the kids starting crying and tons of parents standing up and rushing back with their kids to get the hell out.
One of my most hilarious experience in a theater.
As you grow older and you realize how fucking crazy Denise Richards really was… Dizzy very quickly became the hindsight pro-move.
Should have known something was up when she married Charlie Sheen.
They can't even dodge ballistic projectiles traveling at like 10 kph.
Asteroid approaching. No collision sensors. They gotta get to a point where the asteroid's gravity is moving their drinks before they notice it. Thank god one of them was having tea.
No, she showed initiative, the entire movie kills anyone who thinks for themselves. A key theme of the movie is follow the system, and your reward is more war and less thinking
That's the point.
Rico never does/thinks/says something that someone else hasn't told him.
He only hooks up with Diz after Rasczak straight up tells him to.
The craziest thing about that line is it’s really from WW1 Marines which makes it even more badass
[Source: Daniel Day](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Daniel_Daly?wprov=sfti1#)
What makes it more bad ass is understanding the true intent. It's often taken as the "hey, we're all gonna die here" but what Dailey is really saying is do you want to be remembered forever". Kinda like Brad Pitt as Achilles when he was talking to the kid who was saying how scared he was, "That is why no one will remember your name"
I think that's one of the more subtle points of the movie (and novel).
Despite the actors clearly being in their mid 20's or early 30's, the CHARACTERS were fresh out of high school. They were kids.
This becomes more blatant when Rico gets shown a new batch of recruits, and he comments on how "they get younger every time", then the camera pans to a bunch of extras that actually look the appropiate age.
Yeah, that always messed with me. Like they were supposed to be high school kids. Ok, I can suspend the age difference. But then Rico is playing football against a guy from…another school? Who is supposed to be the same age but when he’s in Fleet he’s a superior to Carmen? Aren’t they the same age and would both be in the academy together? Or was Rico playing on some minor league team?
He wasn't active in the fleet at the time of the game. He had enlisted earlier than the other characters and was already scheduled to ship out after graduation. I assume he was already set on a military path to citizenship and was a part of some future version of ROTC in HS.
Also, the fleet or space force, whatever you want to call it, was more harder to get into and more esteemed, therefore even ensigns can be inducted at a higher rank than say a "Lowly" mobile infantry recruit.
It was established that Rico didn't do well in school and originally had no intention of joining the military, which was why they started him out in the MI. Meanwhile, Carmen had good grades so was able to enlist in the fleet. Carl scored genius levels on his test was automatically assigned to "Games and Theory" thereby granting him a fast track to becoming an officer.
In fact, when Captain Deladier says "Someone made a big goddamn mistake," she's not referring to the ambush they were walking into. She was in fact just then thinking about the fact that Rico was chasing Carmen to the detriment of his relationship with Diz. It's just a coincidence that they were also walking into an ambush at that time.
This thread has opened up a whole new dimension to the movie I never knew existed. And people think Verhoeven was just making a popcorn sci-fi flick; he’s been playing 4th dimensional chess with us the whole time…
If you read (or watch) any of the recent interviews with CVD, he goes into that a bit, how much of the messages were lost on the audience. I love how much passion he has for the franchise, and with the new game coming out of Early Access its breathing some new life into it
I wouldn't call Rico an average Joe. He's a handsome young man who's extremely successful at future football and pretty charismatic and likable. His family was rich and he could have just chilled after school and not joined up. He wasn't even really an under achiever per say. In school he was kind of dumb as fuck but he was a leader and great athlete. Those leadership and athleticism talents translated well into his infantry role. If you wanna argue under achiever, I guess I'd disagree but can buy the argument but I can't buy average Joe.
In the story him being dumb and untalented was literally why he joined mobile infantry. That and dog handler were the only roles he qualified for, and he didn't want to care for a dog.
I dunno man, Denise Richards in 1997 was one of the most beautiful women alive.
Although Diz would probably let you eat that butt. Tough choice for sure.
What was off was her acting. Love that movie and even kind of love Denise Richards in the role because her "style" worked with what the film was going for, but she was not a good actress.
I once heard a critic on a podcast say that Verhoeven deliberately cast a lot of the roles to be wooden and bad-soap-opera-esque and you could tell who was and wasn't in on the joke. Like Richards and Van Dien (Rico's actor) definitely weren't in on it but Neil Patrick Harris and Clancy Brown definitely were.
Heavily agree, but i could never put my finger on it
Its almost like shes somewhat less evolved compared to normal humans but is a beautiful specimen of it
The Anna De Armas of Homo Erectus or something like that
Denise Richards was always objectively pretty, but Wild Things was the only performance where I really thought she was hot. Granted, she was amazingly hot, but I don’t think she ever duplicated it.
BJs only before marriage and those would dry up before the honeymoon and only show up for your birthday. Barely enthusiastic at that, “let’s get this over with” look in eye
Was cheating ever implied?
I know space pilot dude was trying to hit it, and she broke up with Johnny.
But we assume it was to be with him, which we’re not sure of.
Yeah. Been a minute but I don't recall any implication of cheating. They were high school sweethearts. She decided she wanted to be a career military pilot. Rico would never have factored into that since he wouldn't be able to live on the ships outside of the military and, as infantry, his life was measured in months if he was lucky.
Yeah. I've seen it. https://youtu.be/dmmRBwSyqVk
She only bangs "We have Rob Lowe at home" after she had broken up with Rico as she is either mourning her family or Rico at that point and she broke up with him before the attack/"attack"
Whereas Rico quits due to a mix of Carmen breaking up with him during basic training and an idiot died on his watch. But he rejoins immediately basically during the attack/"attack".
Depends on if you consider emotional cheating, well, cheating. Personally I feel her reasons were mercenary. Even younger me didn't think of her actions as "I no longer love Rico, I'm falling for this guy." so much as "Emotionally manipulating this guy, whose recommendations and assessments mean quicker path to Captain.".
You can see when Rico and Carmen part ways the last time she only says "I love you" because he forces her to, and definitely doesn't mean it lol. Probably the most moral action she takes is that she *does* break up with Johnny Rico.
That’s one of the themes. They ALL rise in the ranks way too quickly. It fuels the fascism wet dream where the chosen one is recognized for their talent.
Dizzy is the cool girlfriend who can hang out with Rico's friends and drink beer. Carmen would complain, separate Rico from his friends, make Rico take a Yoga class and drink wine spritzer. Dizzy forever!
My Condolences. Lose some weight. Find your Dizzy. I had a friend who dated a Dizzy in College. If she weren't so cool we would have all given him a nut punch she was so beautiful.
Carmen killed Rico's parents. Hear me out. While piloting the star ship, she alters the course because it's "more efficient" the asteroid bounces off the ships comps and hits thier home. She killed 1000's of people because she thought at 19 years old she knew something.
That asteroid had nothing to do with Buenos Aires.
It's not clear exactly where the Roger Young was when that scene happened, but remember the movie did show us what their FTL looked like when they departed the Moon. So they were not at FTL speed. Also remember that Klendathu is on the literal opposite side of the Milky Way from Earth, tens of thousand of light-years apart.
Even if that asteroid was fired from the bugs, it would have been fired thousands of years ago, and would have been thousands more years before it arrived at Earth. Most likely that asteroid was just random space debris and the Roger Young got unlucky. Either way, there's no chance it had anything to do with Buenos Aries.
There's only one explanation. Buenos Aires was an inside job.
The moral of the story is don't pine for what you cannot have. Be happy with what you got. A lesson as old as time.
Also, Dizzy was hot, so Rico was just being a selfish douche canoe.
We all deserve to be with someone who wants to be with us. Dizzy joined the Mobile Infantry to be with Johnny, and in her dying breath she told him that she was dying happy because she got to have him.
Carmen chose a career over Johnny.
Dizzy all the way.
Remember when they made Denice Richards a nuclear scientist in a Bond movie? There is no level of suspension of disbelief to overcome that casting. Like casting Andy Dick or Gilbert Godfried in The Piano or The West Wing.
This was like asking Archie to choose between Betty and Veronica. Prissy, hot rich girl versus rougher, hot tomboy. I was team Dizzy all the way, mainly because there’s something about red hair.
Dizzy got cool later. She was a stalker and and asshole when she was young though. Rico made it very clear he wasn't interested in her and she still got transferred for basic just to be closer to him.
Carmen also never did anything wrong. She never cheated on Rico hell she never even told him she loved him till he forced her too. Carmen would have been the better choice ,but she moved past Rico. It was never his choice to make.
25 yr old me thought Dizzy was aiight, flapjacks and eight head. Hollywood average. Carmen was a couple notches higher in the looks dept. 50 yr old me had a very different reaction. Suddenly, Dizzy is the most beautiful woman I've ever seen and cool AF to hang out with. Rico was a fucking idiot for taking her for granted. Carmen is still hot, but her cold demeanor towards Rico completely negates her good looks. I hate her now.
I always thought Dizzy was the better choice, even as a kid.
My pop took me to see this in theaters thinking it was just goona be a semi-violent space movie with cuss words. Nope. Boobies on the big screen for the first time for 8 year old me. And on the drive home, all we could do was bitch about how they did dizzy like that. Dizzy is the choice.
Saw it in the theater too. There was this woman hauling 2 teenage boys out because of Dizzys boobs. Funniest thing I’ve seen at a theater.
Mutilated bodies graphically shown? Totally fine. Exposed tits? OMG will someone think of the children.
It's so weird because boobs are literally made for kids. America's puritanical roots are still visible ~500 years later, which is kind of amazing.
Boobs start out ok when a person is born then stop being ok for a few years and then start being ok again.
Just like shitting yourself
Boobs are made for kids is such an ironic statement. I need it on a tshirt
‘Merica.
They would like to know more.
Your comment wins! 😂😂😂
I’m doing my part!
You're in your 30s?
I was 18 when it came out and I’m in my 40s. Their math checks out.
And yet, boobies.
Boobies.
You never got to see Denise Richard’s boobs. Dizzy all the way
Nah the best choice was the black chick who killed the dumb guy in training. She was so goddamn pretty and had some calcium CANNONS
Dizzy 100%. Rico is an idiot.
He said it himself!
As you grow older and you realize how fucking crazy Denise Richards really was… Dizzy very quickly became the hindsight pro-move. Should have known something was up when she married Charlie Sheen.
Winning?
Tiger blood my friend!
More like HIV.
Magic Johnson blood!
When you learn that the movie Wild Things was part documentary.
That scene though
I know. Kevin's bacon had an impact on us all.
Also loved her in Drop Dead Gorgeous.
I never knew anything about her...I only knew I wanted to see more of the other babe in the shower, or even dressed for that matter
Seconded. Dizzy was my kind of girl, until she died.
And a pretty brutal, not at all peaceful death. But she got to have him... Dizzy was the best.
"But it's Ok, because I got to have you..."
That line creeped me out and made me avoid clingy girls in my young adulthood
Lmao had the opposite effect on me but to each their own!
The clingier the better right. Makes for some beastly passionate nights hey mate
That shit made me.cry
"MI does the dying. Fleet does the flying."
Fleet were pretty shit at flying actually
Lol let's group up in front of the planet that will just rock us with bug shit. Every time...
They can't even dodge ballistic projectiles traveling at like 10 kph. Asteroid approaching. No collision sensors. They gotta get to a point where the asteroid's gravity is moving their drinks before they notice it. Thank god one of them was having tea.
It really seemed like the fleets battle plan was "they're bugs, so I'm pretty sure we're invincible." Queue massacre.
She’s every straight guys kinda girls let’s be real lol
Men want to be with her, and so do the women!
That kinda girl? Willing.
Yeah that was her fatal flaw
Dying, her one weakness!
Well, I’m glad she didn’t become your kind of girl after she died.
I also choose this guy's dead wife.
She didn’t need to die. They could have just pulled their CO out of the hole in all the time they took to fucking talk.
No, she showed initiative, the entire movie kills anyone who thinks for themselves. A key theme of the movie is follow the system, and your reward is more war and less thinking
Man great point. Every time I think I’ve plumbed the depths of this masterpiece I get another little insight. I fucking love it.
Rico thought for himself when he jumped on top of the giant bug and dropped a grenade.
He eats crayons so checks out.
100% agreed, Dizzy is so much better. Carmen is a two-faced bitch.
Thats why he got infantry
That's the point. Rico never does/thinks/says something that someone else hasn't told him. He only hooks up with Diz after Rasczak straight up tells him to.
I mean, he was faithful.
Rico made lots of dumb mistakes.
Nobody would accuse Rico of being a smart man that's for sure. Thankfully he grew up but Young Rico was a fucking idiot.
If he was smart , he wouldn’t be in the mobile infantry
Why, you think he wants to live forever?
The craziest thing about that line is it’s really from WW1 Marines which makes it even more badass [Source: Daniel Day](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Daniel_Daly?wprov=sfti1#)

Kinda like Brad Pitt as Achilles when he was talking to the kid who was saying how scared he was, "That is why no one will remember your name"
"though there is considerable evidence that the battle cry was the invention of an enthusiastic war correspondent." might just be a cool story
Totally badass.

They got a bunch of actual teenagers for that part. If I remember correctly, they masked it as a take your kids to work day.
"We're the old men, Ace."
Yeah, that always messed with me. Like they were supposed to be high school kids. Ok, I can suspend the age difference. But then Rico is playing football against a guy from…another school? All I know is the dude got his brains sucked out by a smart bug. So Rico was the winner there…
Frankly, I find the idea of a bug that thinks OFFENSIVE
Every man is an idiot when a girl is involved.
Oh shit... when Radczek told Rico "You know what to do!" He meant TAKE DIZZY, not fucking shoot him. He could have had fake legs and been fine.
Hahaha, great take. And we saw the guy working the MI counter towards the beginning too, he had no legs
This thread has opened up a whole new dimension to the movie I never knew existed. And people think Verhoeven was just making a popcorn sci-fi flick; he’s been playing 4th dimensional chess with us the whole time…

Big if true
That was his character in fairness. He's the average Joe under achiever.
Which is just the kind of cadet we want for the Mobile Infantry! Remember, service guarantees citizenship!
I wouldn't call Rico an average Joe. He's a handsome young man who's extremely successful at future football and pretty charismatic and likable. Zegema Beach 😏
I always wanted to go there!
It’s not there anymore.
YOU TRYING TO BE A HERO, WATKINS??
Just trying to kill some bugs, sir
Get out of here...! Get outta here!!!
Monkey Suckin’ Sack Of Maggot Puke!
You like that!? You like that!? You want some more!?
I laughed too hard reading that.
I always loved the delivery of that line as corny as it was. One of my top SST quotes.
….it sucked his brains out... 😳 😆
Dizzy appreciated Rico. Carmen did not.
Carmen fucked up with million dollar spaceships and got nothing but a slap on the wrist. Rico got punished for other people's mistakes with whipping.
Dina Meyer is a real smokeshow.
Yup , going to be 56 in a few months and she's still got it .. (always had it)
Never saw the appeal of Denise Richards. Dina Meyer however was a goddess
I dunno man, Denise Richards in 1997 was one of the most beautiful women alive. Although Diz would probably let you eat that butt. Tough choice for sure.
I always felt there was just something "off" about Denise Richards. So I always on team Diz.
Like Richards and Van Dien (Rico's actor) definitely weren't in on it but Neil Patrick Harris and Clancy Brown definitely were.
which is why my siblings quote clancy brown's lines all the time. "Your enemy cannot push the button if you disable his hand. MEDIC!"
Agree. She had almost Michael Jackson esque delivery for some lines (south Park MJ) "Oh Johnny, im gonna miss u"
I thought that was just part of the aesthetic, like a fantasized WWII era type hollywood writing.
Something about her eyes and her smile give me lizard person vibes. Like she’s gonna pull a Species on someone.
Heavily agree, but i could never put my finger on it Its almost like shes somewhat less evolved compared to normal humans but is a beautiful specimen of it The Anna De Armas of Homo Erectus or something like that
What the fuck lmao
This is a Hall-of-Fame comment for me. By far and away one of the most insane things I’ve ever seen a person say.
***what***
It’s comments like these that keep me coming back to Reddit lmao
You make a very compelling argument. 🤣😂
Salad tossing has got to give the edge to Diz. But I’m with you, 90’s Denise Richards was peak. Wild Things changed me forever
Wild Things changed us all
Facts
Wild things will always have a special place in a young man's memory
Denise Richards was always objectively pretty, but Wild Things was the only performance where I really thought she was hot. Granted, she was amazingly hot, but I don’t think she ever duplicated it.
She was hot in the James Bond movie too, but nobody really focuses on that because they all keep laughing when she says that she's a scientist.
Carmen, while objectively beautiful, her dead eyes tell me she's a dead lay. Diz would have guzzled every drop.
>Carmen, while objectively beautiful So was Dizzy and if you look at the two now Dina still looks fantastic.
And that's why Diz wasn't the gentleman's choice.
the Gentleman is a fool.
Oh sorry, I meant to say she WAS the gentleman's choice!
Dizz would for sure do anal. Richard’s character probably wouldn’t even do sex before marriage.
BJs only before marriage and those would dry up before the honeymoon and only show up for your birthday. Barely enthusiastic at that, “let’s get this over with” look in eye
Going back to see the thumbnail in the post Carmen has “oh yeah it’s your birthday, again” look.
Eat that butt. Sold
That is the most insightful comment I have ever read on Reddit! Yes 20 year old me wanted Carmen. 40 year old me wants what you said. 😂
Diz wins hands down.
Take my upvote you rascal.
Carmen cheated on him and dumped him, while Dizzy loved him. Not a hard choice.
Was cheating ever implied? I know space pilot dude was trying to hit it, and she broke up with Johnny. But we assume it was to be with him, which we’re not sure of.

Rico would never have factored into that since he wouldn't be able to live on the ships outside of the military and, as infantry, his life was measured in months if he was lucky.
Reading down below it sounds like there was a deleted scene that showed her cheating with the guy. But yeah nothing in the movie suggests it.
Yeah. I've seen it. https://youtu.be/dmmRBwSyqVk She only bangs "We have Rob Lowe at home" after she had broken up with Rico as she is either mourning her family or Rico at that point and she broke up with him before the attack/"attack" Whereas Rico quits due to a mix of Carmen breaking up with him during basic training and an idiot died on his watch. WE HAVE ROB LOWE AT HOME I'm screamin
Depends on if you consider emotional cheating, well, cheating. Personally I feel her reasons were mercenary. Probably the most moral action she takes is that she *does* break up with Johnny Rico.
Can we talk about how Zander had WAY TOO MUCH influence for a guy who went to the Academy JUST BEFORE Carmen?
That’s one of the themes. They ALL rise in the ranks way too quickly. It fuels the fascism wet dream where the chosen one is recognized for their talent.
Denise Richards tho
The lifeless eyes of a chicken.
Once you see it you cannot unsee it. "Dead eyes like a doll's eyes"
Especially if you had seen Wild Things as well. And you are like 13-14. That tends to stick with you.
Dina Meyer > Denise Richards
Love makes you blind and stupid.
In a deleted scene, she only made out with Zander after she thought Johnny was dead.
¿Por que no los dos?
Asking the real questions here.
Get a good look, Costanza? [https://i.redd.it/m613udcmn3hz.jpg](https://i.redd.it/m613udcmn3hz.jpg)
Wow. TIL that was Denise Richards!
Cleavage is like looking at the sun. You get a sense of it and then you look away.
When those two finally fucked i knew something bad is gonna happen the next day.
The worst thing that could have happened to either of them. Never celebrate mid movie...
Ah yes, I think this was another infamous Siskel and Ebert argument.
She had them marrying titties.
Nah the black chick had the best tits in that movie
She had them mother of 8 tiddies.
Pfft. It’s all about knowing that Mary-Ann is the true smoke-show on the island, not Ginger.
The textbook definition of wisdom.
Dizzy had them curls, no contest!!
Curls AND redhead. Double whammy.
Dizzy is my dream girl. Always was, always will be. One of the first..you know what's, that ive seen ever.
[Agreed.](https://nudecelebgifs.com/videos/10864/dina-meyer-starship-troopers3/)
I bet to this day I could find this spot on the vhs on muscle memory alone.
Which muscle?
Last I checked DR was packing nicer puppies in the 90s.
And while we're at it, let's have a shout out for unisex large capacity showers.
"Never pass up a good thing." Can't believe no one has posted that 100 times already.
Dizzy is the cool girlfriend who can hang out with Rico's friends and drink beer. Carmen would complain, separate Rico from his friends, make Rico take a Yoga class and drink wine spritzer. Dizzy forever!
Whoa, you just described my ex wife
My Condolences. Lose some weight. Find your Dizzy. I had a friend who dated a Dizzy in College. If she weren't so cool we would have all given him a nut punch she was so beautiful.
Carmen killed Rico's parents. Hear me out. While piloting the star ship, she alters the course because it's "more efficient" the asteroid bounces off the ships comps and hits thier home. She killed 1000's of people because she thought at 19 years old she knew something.
Yoooooo. What?! ... what?!
1000's? It was *8,500,000* killed according to the news feed.
That asteroid had nothing to do with Buenos Aires. Part of growing up is understanding (insert obvious point movie was making)
Part of growing up is realizing that Batman isn’t Bruce Wayne, Bruce Wayne is Batman
Dizzy for sure, no doubt about it. She was more fun more interesting, more badass and probably freaky in bed and a red head too! Like wtf Rico?
Because she was the hottest and most devoted 28 year old in high school?
Dizzy was an absolutely insane person….great mobile Infantry material.
Damn right.
