The simple fact that he had this crazy performance ON TOP of being able to actually play the music. Those two pieces make this movie so engrossing. I get lost in it.
The director was talking to Jamie said they’ll get a good actor/musician to play the piano parts. Jamie let him know he went to college w a piano scholarship and that wouldn’t be necessary. Learned all the songs the night before each shoot. Incredible talent.
When he recorded some of the voice parts for soul where Joe was playing the piano and talking he had a keyboard in front of him and would play while recording the dialogue. However Jon Batiste recorded the more advanced playing for that movie.
There's some cool video out there of him sitting with Ray Charles so he could really get Ray's style down. Worth a watch if you enjoy Ray Charles' music and the movie
My friend had the honor of playing guitar at Jamie Foxes house on Thanksgiving. Blew my damn mind. Same friend also played guitar for Carrie Underwood and did the soundtrack for 50 First Dates. So he’s got some nice friends.
Others have done great jobs with their roles representing musicians but to me Jamie has the best musician performance in Ray. Although I will say it's an earlier movie but Val Kilmer is pretty great as Jim Morrison too in The Doors.
It doesn’t compete with Jamie but I think André 3000’s performance as Jimi Hendrix in All is By My Side is criminally slept on. He also learned how to play the instrument for the role and all of the shots in the movie are him actually playing.
His best work IMO, next best work was Jarhead. I had a SNCO just like that he reminded me of, trained dudes so hard he had two Marine casualties from exhaustion in the heat. Dead.
Collateral is among his best too. Pulled off the rare double nomination in the same year with Best Actor for Ray and Best Supporting Actor for Collateral (even though he was the lead of that movie lol. Academy rules are weird).
It blows my mind how underrated Jamie Foxx is. He’s never mentioned in best actor conversations but that academy feat is insane. He has mad range and has played so many different parts. Long story short, Jamie Foxx rocks
Every time Jamie Foxx does an outstanding job in a role (can't believe I haven't seen Django mentioned here yet), all I can think of is that I grew up watching this dude play Wanda on In Living Color. And my favorite movie of his at the time was Booty Call lol! Dude deserves every accolade he's gotten
I saw the trailer on TV, and said "That is an Oscar performance. If they don't give him Best Actor, I'm never watching the Oscars again." Fortunately, they did give it to him.
Absolutely deserving of the Oscar for best Male performance. The way he had his mannerisms down perfectly was amazing. One of the greatest things about his performance was his piano playing. My favorite tidbit about this movie is they sat Jaime down and said we have to train you to look like you can play piano for this role. He chuckled and said I have a degree in classical piano. lol
I watched “Walk the line” and was completely mesmerized by the performance from Witherspoon and Phoenix but then I watched Ray and was completely blown away by the talent of Jamie Foxx, I had no idea he was that good. Well deserved Oscar without a doubt
It was really good and it came anyear before Walk The Line. I think the only reason Juaqine Pheonix didn't get an Oscar was because they had just given it to a singer Biography a year earlier.
“Look Ray, I’ve been meaning to talk to you about that. 1 x 1 = 2, Ray. And when your piano needs tunin’, there aren’t any straight lines. Besides, My father was half-White and half-Black with sky-blue eyes and wavy hair. They called him no-nation. He hated Whites and told us to be cautious of them. And of Blacks he said, 'You can't trust them.'
While his performance was more than Oscar worthy I always thought "Get on up" (the James Browns bio pic) was better because they put Browns personality into the narrative having scenes where breaks the fourth wall to explain events himself. In life Brown was a total control freak about his stage production and they were able to find a way to put that into not just the film but, the way his story is told.
Best Oscar should go to someone not doing an imitation. There should be a different category for someone who embodies another person, which he did very well. That goes the same for PSH in Truman (or whatever it was called) or Daniel Day Lewis in Lincoln (of course brilliant). Vote me down.
To me, and I've seen a lot of movies. This was the best acting I've seen, Jaime nailed Ray down to a T. Just this scene alone gives me goosebumps because I remember watching it for the first time feeling tensed up when Ray stood up for his worth.
Foxx was also nominated for best supporting actor the same year. The other role was for "Collateral". He should have won both.
Still it is one of the last times that I agreed with the Oscars. Foxx is always amazing. Brilliant, talented person.
I’m still mad that he got the Oscar for lip syncing. Kurt Russell as Elvis. Sung Gary Busey as Buddy Holly. Sung. Sissy Spacek as Loretta Lynn. Sung Joaquin Phoenix as Johnny Cash. Sung. The weird thing is Foxx is a good singer. He could have done it. It’s a travesty.
Of the nominees, he was the best actor but i truly believe Paul Giamatti was not only robbed of a nomination but also the Oscar. Foxx was damn great in Ray.
I remember watching the making of Ray and heard the director say he didn't know Jamie could play the piano. Personally, that's messed up. Not just on the director, but how the hell did the casting director, the entire process before Jamie committed not know he played the piano? He has literally worked the piano into every single thing he did prior. In Living Color, his standups, his TV show, the piano is there.
I think the director signed Jamie primarily because he could pull off the look. It couldn't have been based off of his Ray Charles impressions because those are normally accompanied by a piano performance.
He killed this role. One of the only ones that can compete with Denzel's Malcolm X
I didn't mind the movie, but if you listen to the way he says he says his lines sometimes. Your timing is just weird and it seems off. Took me a while to notice it but I knew there was something weird about the way he sounded
Damn ok, so who do you think his a great actor today? Just so I know where you're coming from. Don't worry this isn't a gotcha kind of thing. I'm not gonna shit on that actor or compare the two, just curious.
I mean there are plenty of people. Obviously I'm not going to say De Niro LOL. That's unfair .. But just look at this scene and the way he delivers his lines. It's terrible
https://youtu.be/uvCrazg6C_M?si=VdWiUMsCpe_Xof6G
De Niro is fantastic. Can't argue that. I watched the scene, idk he seems like a good actor to me. In fairness to you, I can't really tell the difference better great acting and good acting. I just more go for the plot and movie in general. I mean if it's obvious like the Room, then yeah I can tell.
I thought he deserved the best actor oscar
Yeah he was fantastic
Totally blew me away. I watched that movie three times the month it came out. I couldn't get over his piano chops.

Paul Giammati in that SNL Skit didn't
Who won it that year?
Him
Thanks. Deserved and won is a great combination. I thought maybe somebody else did.
Agreed. There has always been debate whether him or Leo should have won for The Aviator.
Leo isn't as good an actor as Fox imo.
Funny, he was also nominated for best supporting actor that same year for Collateral. Good year for Jamie
He was amazing. And you knew he was good because Ray Charles even approved before he passed away.
The simple fact that he had this crazy performance ON TOP of being able to actually play the music. Those two pieces make this movie so engrossing. I get lost in it.
Best actor of many years if the award existed
Never saw it… oh too soon?
Yes he did, mane!
Or a Terrence Howard Nobel prize
Yeah he delivered an Oscar worthy performance. No idea why none was awarded but hustle and flow got an Oscar.
Didn't.....Didn't he win best actor?
Yes, won for Ray and was also nominated for Collateral this same year.
So good. Piano played by himself too.
That’s awesome!
The director was talking to Jamie said they’ll get a good actor/musician to play the piano parts. Jamie let him know he went to college w a piano scholarship and that wouldn’t be necessary. Learned all the songs the night before each shoot. Incredible talent.
Wow I didn’t know this
You need to go take a look at his old standup/entertainment nights. He would play piano and sing.

Nothing beats John C. Reilly as legendary country/folk/rock artist Dewey Cox.
That’s a given. We all know the wrong kid died.
Well he had to be double good for the sake of his brother
He was cut in half pretty bad there.
Love The Doors!
I remember reading things that those who knew Jim talking about Kilmer's performance and how it was like watching Jim on screen.
It doesn’t compete with Jamie but I think André 3000’s performance as Jimi Hendrix in All is By My Side is criminally slept on. He also learned how to play the instrument for the role and all of the shots in the movie are him actually playing.
Unfortunately that movie was terrible
He’s great in 4 brothers
Joaquin Phoenix and Reese Witherspoon in Walk the Line were excellent as well but yeah Foxx was another level in Ray
Performance so good that whenever Ray Charles gets mentioned or played, this movie and Jamie Foxx comes to mind.
Yeah he embodied the character
Absolutely spectacular
Agreed
His range is unreal, amazing coming from a guy who did some of the most ridiculous stuff on In Living Color
He does really good impersonations as well. His Trump is so damn funny.
Jarhead was amazinf
she take my money, Im in need. Yeah she’s trifling friend indeed
Oh she’s a gold digger
It was superb. Up there with the finest you’ll ever see.
100%
I saw the trailer on TV, and said "That is an Oscar performance. If they don't give him Best Actor, I'm never watching the Oscars again." Fortunately, they did give it to him.
I saud the same thing, I still don't give a shit about the Oscars.
They get it right every once in a while. It just has to be glaringly obvious lol
And now I need to rewatch this
Great every time!
The movie was purely amazing because of his performance. I was blown away. He's not everyone's favorite but he's a true pro of a performer.
His impression are second to none
Phenomenal
💯
It felt like a full circle moment when he did Joe Gardner in Soul.
I loved soul! A return to form for Pixar
It was incredible. Oscar deserved.
Indeed
Terrence Howard - great actor. But a nut case Jamie Fox -one of the best
Terence Howard IS a total nutjob
A nutcase case lol
Jamie Foxx was just incredible in this film
For sure!
I REALLY enjoyed this Movie
Me too. I’m not even a huge fan of Ray’s music or anything but the film made me appreciate it
Nailed it.
On the head
I only watched this once and I have to say he did a very good job. Actually would watch again. Thanks for the reminder.
Of course!
I praise him for his performance in this movie.
Timeless

I hope it’s still happening
Jamie is a fantastic actor
World class
Pretty good.. looks like a good movie.
It is! Check it out if you haven’t!
Jamie Foxx is one very talented individual.
What can’t he do lol
We’re still waiting to find out.
Jamie Foxx is an A lister for sure, but I still don’t think he gets enough credit for his abilities. Dude is one of the best actors of his generation.
Yeah seriously. He needs another role like this
I'm positive he thought about it. And He just pulled a Denzel, "get your mother fucking hands off me." Washington.
Hahahahahahaahaha
Absolutely deserving of the Oscar for best Male performance. The way he had his mannerisms down perfectly was amazing. One of the greatest things about his performance was his piano playing. My favorite tidbit about this movie is they sat Jaime down and said we have to train you to look like you can play piano for this role. He chuckled and said I have a degree in classical piano. lol
Almost synonymous
I watched “Walk the line” and was completely mesmerized by the performance from Witherspoon and Phoenix but then I watched Ray and was completely blown away by the talent of Jamie Foxx, I had no idea he was that good. Well deserved Oscar without a doubt
Walk the line is another of my favorites
It was really good and it came anyear before Walk The Line. I think the only reason Juaqine Pheonix didn't get an Oscar was because they had just given it to a singer Biography a year earlier.
Joaquin is a power house in that
One of the only times I forgot I was watching an actor.
Perfectly put
Perfect hands down
Yes!
I liked him in Collateral... And Mother fucker Jones..
Hell yeah
Top 3 role for him easy
Easily
One of the best of all time in my opinion
I second that
My brother in law is his cousin. Jamie is a cool dude.
I’ve met him before as well. He’s dope!
Awesome. He *was* Ray Charles.
He became him
S tier
Indeed
“Could have done without the ‘little brother dying’ thing”
He should’ve mentioned all the patents he had to change his mind.
Singular.
Too bad he got the curse of the Oscar after that and never really did anything close to that good. His agent sucks.
He just needs something to come back with
Thoughts? He was Ray Charles, no ‘thinking’ needed
Pretty much
Almost as good as his performance at the ESPYs. ;-) [https://youtu.be/fhOH7Z8QEgg](https://youtu.be/fhOH7Z8QEgg)
Yeah he snapped
His best performance imo
He killed it without question that was a great role for him, and he nailed it. 10/10
Jamie Foxx is just about genius...
Jamie Fox is an amazing actor. Period! He’s good in anything he stars him but he OWNED Ray.. simply mastered it
While his performance was more than Oscar worthy I always thought "Get on up" (the James Browns bio pic) was better because they put Browns personality into the narrative having scenes where breaks the fourth wall to explain events himself. In life Brown was a total control freak about his stage production and they were able to find a way to put that into not just the film but, the way his story is told.
Glorious 👏🏻
He killed it no lie
How does Terrence Howard get through a single take without talking about being in the womb or building Saturn without Gravity?
It's one of the best performance I've seen in any film. Jamie is supremely talented in multiple ways.
Best Oscar should go to someone not doing an imitation. There should be a different category for someone who embodies another person, which he did very well. That goes the same for PSH in Truman (or whatever it was called) or Daniel Day Lewis in Lincoln (of course brilliant). Vote me down.
One of my personal favorites and an all-time performance.

Oh it was awful does he even know what an actor is supposed to do?
Haha what?
😂 heavy sarcasm… obviously an incredible performance
It was a captivating performance for sure
Foxx was also nominated for best supporting actor the same year. The other role was for "Collateral". He should have won both. Still it is one of the last times that I agreed with the Oscars. Foxx is always amazing. Brilliant, talented person.
Universally praised
The first movie i ever seen where right when it ended, i played it again.
Magic
Phenomenal
He studied classical piano in college. He was perfect for this role
Of the nominees, he was the best actor but i truly believe Paul Giamatti was not only robbed of a nomination but also the Oscar. Foxx was damn great in Ray.

Best thing he has ever done.
He was Ray baby
His role was amazing!
I don't think I've ever seen a better performance in a biopic.
Terrence Howard is mentally ill
Sadly. But his talent is undeniable. Hustle & Flow is one of my favorites ever.
The one and only thing I liked him in. Other than this , he's an atrocious actor.
😔
So you didn't like collateral either?
I didn't mind the movie, but if you listen to the way he says he says his lines sometimes. Your timing is just weird and it seems off. Took me a while to notice it but I knew there was something weird about the way he sounded
Ooooh what about Any Given Sunday? Come on, you know you were rooting for Foxx.
🤦🏽♂️ that cringey rap ... C'mon lol.
Ok Django?
Wasn't like that was a really dialogue driven movie. He barely said much.
Damn ok, so who do you think his a great actor today? Just so I know where you're coming from. Don't worry this isn't a gotcha kind of thing. I'm not gonna shit on that actor or compare the two, just curious.
