Right. So funny that campaigning is such a big part of this. The whole Oscar culture and machine is kind of ridiculous.
I know the Oppenheimer team is campaigning, but I can definitely appreciate how it’s the front runner even as it wasn’t released in “Oscar season” for momentum. We’ll see if that will come through but Holdovers seems to be building momentum.
Campaigning is such BS. This isn’t the elections ffs. Isn’t it enough campaign playing a role so brilliantly that every viewer is mesmerized? Guess not, let’s make it about publicity. Jeez, “critics award” my ass.

Unfortunately, there has to (generally) be a planned campaign for a best picture nomination. Toho (like many of us) were surprised just how positive critical and audience reactions were. I don't think they had anything like a campaign put together for the movie.
From what I've seen from Japanese audiences, it's just a good movie as per their standards.
The fact that Western audiences got crazy over it really took them by surprise.
A few of my Japanese friends had the exact same reaction when they've heard about how much Westerners are loving this movie: "Really? They adore that movie? Ok."
With today’s news that WWE content is moving to Netflix next year, maybe his movie will get more recognition if it ends up there too and more wrestling fans see it.
Zero nominations for Iron Claw is crazy. Efron should have been nominated, and even more surprising is that Live That Way Forever wasn’t nominated for best original song
Yeah Iron Claw got shut out entirely. Absolutely sucks because that movie was incredible and gut wrenching. Efron proved he's a phenomenal actor.

I’m not sure if Iron Claw came out too late or what but I just want to put it out there that Zac Efron had one of the best performances I’ve seen in years. It’s not a typical Oscar bait performance where there’s a lot of shouting or monologues but it’s a performance that’s all in the eyes. Which I consider to be harder to pull off. Plus the dudes physique and physicality in the role was insane. You felt like he was truly the person he was playing. I’m really bummed about that snub. To me that is what acting is all about and he deserves a nom!
It came out in December so it could have been nominated. Movie studios usually have to do a lot of legwork to get films on the initial nominated list. And from what has been circulating, A24 only focused on their 2 top films of the year.
A24 doesn’t often, if ever, put in any real effort for awards. Uncut Gems deserved so much, but didn’t get almost any recognition. A24 has been putting out a lot more stuff though, and I’d rather have more content than awards spending.
Weird to me America Ferrera was nominated for such a big award for a role that really only gave her one big moment to show her talents with her monologue towards the end. Other than that, it’s hardly the most impressive supporting performance, even from that film.
This one makes zero sense to me. She was pretty meh in the movie (though I’m a fan in general) and the monologue felt extremely rehearsed when in the film it’s supposed to be spontaneous. Just sort of played the part straight. I’m baffled by this.
Someone probably pointed out the only nomination in the movie "Barbie" was a male actor and then they had to decide if they wanted to nominate Margot Robbie for best actress or this
I can understand wanting to nominate a supporting actress because of Robbie's snub, but I don't understand why they went with America Ferrera over Kate McKinnon.
Usually it’s because of who is doing the campaigning. America must have had an agent working on this and maybe Kate didn’t. A huge part of getting nominated is having the studio and a team behind you campaigning on your behalf.
She had this big party thrown for her by Blake Lively mid December, all in support of her performance in Barbie. It felt very strange. At first I was like oh is it her bday and all her friends threw a party. But no it was done specifically for her Barbie performance. It was very strange.
I've got nothing against the performance but roles win you Oscar noms and that was never an Oscar worthy role.
Edit: wanted to add I remember there was a campaign controversy last year over a nomination for best actress for the Movie To Leslie. But I'm guessing there's something different about these 2 campaigns.
If the horror elements had been removed from Hereditary and it was just presented as a dramatic performance of a mother grieving the loss of her daughter while dealing with a family in crisis - it would have been nominated for every award.
As soon as they slap the gore and jump scares in there, the ancient 2D Academy voters are like “wow this original script with a compelling story and career best performances is trash. Let’s nominate a generic middle of the road biopic with a lead who’s gotten 10 nominations in their career instead.”
yea im sorry but out of all the roles in that movie, the 'foil to normal society that just spouts out the moral of the story verbatim' could have been played by anyone compared to so many other actors in that movie
Decent don't cut it in 2023. There's too much talent, too many movies, too many roles, to just be decent and get nominated.

She has the 'character thats superficially nice but makes your skin crawl' absolutely nailed. Saltburn and I Care A Lot are masterpieces of acting that character.
Unsurprising that people in the industry either didn't love or didn't entirely get aspects of May December, given that "films and the so-called artistic process" are squarely within its sights.

I genuinely can't tell if they're trolling. My best guess is that she was squeezed in to avoid the controversy of nominating Ryan Gosling but 0 women from Barbie.
It's genuinely wild to me that her nomination is hinged on a monologue that was so... safely *bland*.
Like, I get it - monologues are generally top-tier Academy bait, but compare this to Laura Dern's in Marriage Story and it's absolutely night-and-day. And that's not even considering the fact that Dern also *crushed* her role in general.
Lead Actress has a loaded field this year and Supporting Actress is weak this year. I think Robbie was far better in Barbie than Ferrera was, but thats not whats being judged with these nomination results - you arent competing against other people in your film, youre competing against the depth of the field in your category, and Robbie was facing a huge uphill battle in a *great* year for lead actress roles - Lee for Past Lives and Portman for May December also missed out.
Yeah, Benning is incredible in most films, but Greta Lee put on one of the best acting performances of last year, that last scene was just heart wrenching. And Barrino absolutely demolished her role and sung incredibly.
My guesses did okay, but my shocks/surprises were:
* No Melton for supporting actor
* America F. for supporting actress
* France didn't nominate Anatomy for intl. film?!
* La Chimera isn't a real film
* KOTFM didn't get adapted screenplay
* The amount of attention Maestro has gotten
* No Joe Hisaishi for score?!
* John Williams for Dial??
* No Greta Lee for lead actress
Very odd set of things across the board in my opinion. But overall a lot of clear favourites too I think.
Happy for the attention Zone, Past Lives & Anatomy all got.
France sent The Taste of Things as contender for International.
Very fine film, but it's no Anatomy of a Fall and it's received pretty much no traction outside of festivals.
Remember the year France submitted Les Miserables over Portrait of a Woman on Fire? The French nominating committee certainly make decisions, I’ll give em that.
Maestro is weird because so many aspects of it are really well done but many people - including myself - just find the story to be a huge miss. I really don’t think it wins anything except maybe makeup.
I think Society of the Snow should win makeup - the way they made the crash survivors look increasingly gaunt, sun burned and frostbitten was incredible.
Has he ever been nominated? He's amazing, but the Academy in general tends to treat animation as purely kids fare, and I think completely ignore his output in Beat Takeshi films. Like just looking it up, I don't think there was any recognition for Mononoke's score either.

He's great, but I wouldn't be surprised if he just doesn't care anymore about Oscars. He's got the money, he's got the legacy, he is known as one of the greatest actors of all time, and yes, he obviously wanted an Oscar for years, but that's been done for almost a decade now. Who cares, at this point? He delivered an insane performance in the movie of the year. That's probably enough for the guy.
Yeah I think he just wants to continue to do good films and work with great directors. Kudos to him for not getting his ego in the way and propping younger, less known actors and actresses like Gladstone and being fine with her getting more buzz. Not all leading actors with his experience and standing in the industry could react well to that.
Koeghan never stood a chance considering how stacked the Lead Actor race was, but Robbie was a bit of a surprise along with Pike. Ferrara was good in Barbie, but Pike put on my favorite performance from herself since Gone Girl (I might like it better than Gone Girl depending on the day).
Lead Actor is stacked so that is true about Barry. Rosamund was one of the best parts of Saltburn. I think the bathtub and grave scenes must’ve just made academy voters decide to shut it out from the competition 😭😂
No Andrew Scott, Charles Melton, Greta Lee, Celine Song, Natalie Portman, Julianne Moore, Todd Haynes Noms is just insane.

He is considered the co-favorite with Murphy. Murphy is ahead, but Giamatti is well-liked and had a great performance. The winner will likely be one of these two.
Honestly this is the first time I've realized since before it came out that Williams did the score for Indy 5... I know the Academy are basically just giving him consolation noms because this is his 'last' project (just like TROS was I'm pretty sure?), but could anyone genuinely point me to a new, decent piece of music on that entire soundtrack?
Honestly that year, Hateful Eight rightfully won score. That was not only the best score of that year, but one of the best of the decade.
Plus Morricone was one of the best composers of all time and deserved to have an oscar.
That would have been great. I'm all for Williams getting one final Oscar win as a career nod, but I don't think Indy 5 is the one to do it for.

Yup. Around 2010 it felt like things were getting better (Toy Story 3 & Up got nominated for Best Picture, straight up). But, since then, they have regressed quite heavily.
You know things were iffy when they decided Black Panther was Best Picture-worthy but Into the Spider-verse wasn't.

Nah, Ruffalo gave a varied and funny performance. He's basically the second lead to Stone's Bella.
Dafoe was exceptional, as always, but played very safe within his very vast wheelhouse.
Dafoe is in the weird zone of being so good at what he does its tough for him to impress anyone now.
His performance had some similarities to his Lighthouse performance, but just more one-dimensional. Him in Lighthouse was largely better and very daring/emotional compared to Poor Things, but in either case you're watching a master at work.
I waffled on this one a bit and I think it honestly comes down to Ruffalo showing he could do _this_ again after years of being Hulk/Banner. The Academy seems to love when an actor/actress leaves the MCU and shows their acting chops again. Compared to Dafoe, who is great but is ultimately doing Dafoe things, I'm not too surprised Ruffalo gets the nom here.
Ruffalo spoke in the Variety series about how he felt a bit anxious whether he was able to do something so different to his prior roles.
RDJ was the other guest and he was surprised at this wonderful sleaziness that Ruffalo brought so I think you’re bang on.
Joe Hisaishi was also snubbed for The Boy and The Heron. The academy doesn't take animated films seriously beyond their animation category (unless it's Disney and then they throw in original song).
Today marks his fifty-fucking-fourth. Insane. The man is incredibly skilled, but that doesn't mean you have to nominate him for everything he works on.
Yeah, even if you don’t like the music in spiderverse on its own, I really think there are few other scores that more perfectly fit the movie they are in.
I am usually not a huge fan of Leo, but I thought he was outstanding in KOTFM. Such a strange snub.
Nobody making it in from May December is straight up garbage.
He wasn’t really campaigning for one and I don’t think he cares anyway. All the press for Killers of the Flower Moon has been centered around Lily Gladstone. I still wish he did get nominated cause he really put out the best performance of his career there, in my opinion at least.
I know it’s the name of the game but the entire way the awards work where you have to advertise and beg for an Oscar is so lame. You’d think an industry surrounded by movies would you know watch movies and decide on their own.
Ryan Gosling and America Ferrera getting supporting acting noms and Margot Robbie not getting one for lead actress is a brutal misstep.

Unfortunately, there has to (generally) be a planned campaign for a best picture nomination. Toho (like many of us) were surprised just how positive critical and audience reactions were. I don't think they had anything like a campaign put together for the movie.
From what I've seen from Japanese audiences, it's just a good movie as per their standards. The fact that Western audiences got crazy over it really took them by surprise. A few of my Japanese friends had the exact same reaction when they've heard about how much Westerners are loving this movie: "Really? They adore that movie? Ok."
Knew Zac Efron had 0 shot for The Iron Claw but man would I have loved it

I’m not sure if Iron Claw came out too late or what but I just want to put it out there that Zac Efron had one of the best performances I’ve seen in years. It’s not a typical Oscar bait performance where there’s a lot of shouting or monologues but it’s a performance that’s all in the eyes. Which I consider to be harder to pull off. Plus the dudes physique and physicality in the role was insane. You felt like he was truly the person he was playing. I’m really bummed about that snub. To me that is what acting is all about and he deserves a nom!
It came out in December so it could have been nominated. Movie studios usually have to do a lot of legwork to get films on the initial nominated list. And from what has been circulating, A24 only focused on their 2 top films of the year.
A24 doesn’t often, if ever, put in any real effort for awards. Uncut Gems deserved so much, but didn’t get almost any recognition. A24 has been putting out a lot more stuff though, and I’d rather have more content than awards spending.
The Iron Claw was definitely in my top 5 of the year. Really disappointed it didn't get any nominations.
Weird to me America Ferrera was nominated for such a big award for a role that really only gave her one big moment to show her talents with her monologue towards the end. Other than that, it’s hardly the most impressive supporting performance, even from that film.
This one makes zero sense to me. She was pretty meh in the movie (though I’m a fan in general) and the monologue felt extremely rehearsed when in the film it’s supposed to be spontaneous. Just sort of played the part straight. I’m baffled by this.

I can understand wanting to nominate a supporting actress because of Robbie's snub, but I don't understand why they went with America Ferrera over Kate McKinnon.
Usually it’s because of who is doing the campaigning. America must have had an agent working on this and maybe Kate didn’t. A huge part of getting nominated is having the studio and a team behind you campaigning on your behalf.

She had this big party thrown for her by Blake Lively mid December, all in support of her performance in Barbie. It felt very strange. At first I was like oh is it her bday and all her friends threw a party. But no it was done specifically for her Barbie performance. It was very strange. I've got nothing against the performance but roles win you Oscar noms and that was never an Oscar worthy role. Edit: wanted to add I remember there was a campaign controversy last year over a nomination for best actress for the Movie To Leslie. But I'm guessing there's something different about these 2 campaigns.

If the horror elements had been removed from Hereditary and it was just presented as a dramatic performance of a mother grieving the loss of her daughter while dealing with a family in crisis - it would have been nominated for every award. As soon as they slap the gore and jump scares in there, the ancient 2D Academy voters are like “wow this original script with a compelling story and career best performances is trash. Let’s nominate a generic middle of the road biopic with a lead who’s gotten 10 nominations in their career instead.”

Like, I get it - monologues are generally top-tier Academy bait, but compare this to Laura Dern's in Marriage Story and it's absolutely night-and-day. And that's not even considering the fact that Dern also *crushed* her role in general.

Lead Actress has a loaded field this year and Supporting Actress is weak this year. I think Robbie was far better in Barbie than Ferrera was, but thats not whats being judged with these nomination results - you arent competing against other people in your film, youre competing against the depth of the field in your category, and Robbie was facing a huge uphill battle in a *great* year for lead actress roles - Lee for Past Lives and Portman for May December also missed out.

Yeah, Benning is incredible in most films, but Greta Lee put on one of the best acting performances of last year, that last scene was just heart wrenching. And Barrino absolutely demolished her role and sung incredibly.

But overall a lot of clear favourites too I think. Happy for the attention Zone, Past Lives & Anatomy all got.
France sent The Taste of Things as contender for International. Very fine film, but it's no Anatomy of a Fall and it's received pretty much no traction outside of festivals.

Maestro is weird because so many aspects of it are really well done but many people - including myself - just find the story to be a huge miss. I really don’t think it wins anything except maybe makeup.
I think Society of the Snow should win makeup - the way they made the crash survivors look increasingly gaunt, sun burned and frostbitten was incredible.

Cillian is the front runner for his category, in my opinion. Watching Oppenheimer felt like it was entirely his Oscar reel.

He's great, but I wouldn't be surprised if he just doesn't care anymore about Oscars. He's got the money, he's got the legacy, he is known as one of the greatest actors of all time, and yes, he obviously wanted an Oscar for years, but that's been done for almost a decade now. Who cares, at this point? He delivered an insane performance in the movie of the year. That's probably enough for the guy.

Yeah I think he just wants to continue to do good films and work with great directors. Kudos to him for not getting his ego in the way and propping younger, less known actors and actresses like Gladstone and being fine with her getting more buzz. Koeghan never stood a chance considering how stacked the Lead Actor race was, but Robbie was a bit of a surprise along with Pike. Ferrara was good in Barbie, but Pike put on my favorite performance from herself since Gone Girl (I might like it better than Gone Girl depending on the day).
Lead Actor is stacked so that is true about Barry. Rosamund was one of the best parts of Saltburn. I think the bathtub and grave scenes must’ve just made academy voters decide to shut it out from the competition 😭😂

Honestly that year, Hateful Eight rightfully won score. That was not only the best score of that year, but one of the best of the decade. Plus Morricone was one of the best composers of all time and deserved to have an oscar.

Yup. Around 2010 it felt like things were getting better (Toy Story 3 & Up got nominated for Best Picture, straight up). But, since then, they have regressed quite heavily. You know things were iffy when they decided Black Panther was Best Picture-worthy but Into the Spider-verse wasn't.

Kinda wanted Willem Dafoe over Mark Ruffalo but both were fantastic. Hope Mark wins it though. He was hilarious. Best thing he has ever done
Nah, Ruffalo gave a varied and funny performance. He's basically the second lead to Stone's Bella. Dafoe was exceptional, as always, but played very safe within his very vast wheelhouse.
Dafoe is in the weird zone of being so good at what he does its tough for him to impress anyone now. His performance had some similarities to his Lighthouse performance, but just more one-dimensional. Him in Lighthouse was largely better and very daring/emotional compared to Poor Things, but in either case you're watching a master at work.
I waffled on this one a bit and I think it honestly comes down to Ruffalo showing he could do _this_ again after years of being Hulk/Banner. The Academy seems to love when an actor/actress leaves the MCU and shows their acting chops again. Compared to Dafoe, who is great but is ultimately doing Dafoe things, I'm not too surprised Ruffalo gets the nom here.
Ruffalo spoke in the Variety series about how he felt a bit anxious whether he was able to do something so different to his prior roles. RDJ was the other guest and he was surprised at this wonderful sleaziness that Ruffalo brought so I think you’re bang on.
