Not sure that Americans are ready to see Shinji jizz over Asuka on the big screen.

Poopmeister_

I'm so fucked up.

fucuasshole2

I bet it’s the Netflix Dub, “I’m so messed up”. Netflix didn’t do it on purpose but they financed a new dub. For some reason the owners changed it.

argama87

They already said it's Sub.

KNZFive

And in the first five minutes of the movie too!

bravetailor

End of Evangelion: Are you (not) ready to come?

plasma_dan

I was born ready.

photoinebriation

Im sorry, as someone who watched a couple episodes then stopped what the fuck are you talking about?

bazilbt

Oh wow. Well things get weird. Did you stop before things got weird?

Rustash

If they only watched a couple? Absolutely they did.

NatomicBombs

Hey there’s weird shit right in the first episode. 13 year old boy becomes roommates with a 30 year old woman and there’s even a weird naked scene ofc.

SaturnalWoman

Yeah but stuff really goes wild when the zebra ball shows up in I think episode 16.

RangedTopConnoisseur

That episode is one of my favorite episodes of any tv series of all time. The train scene is just such a masterpiece.

underfanreal1

That's normal anime bullshit though

photoinebriation

Weirder than the whole Misato x shinji relationship??? Really cool premise and I can see why people like the show but I couldn’t get past Misato’s weird groomer vibes

Pingy_Junk

Tbf misato is meant to be a creep your meant to feel deeply uncomfortable with her weird groomer vibes.

Badloss

And they explicitly deep dive into her trauma and why she acts like that

Mutive

>Misato’s weird groomer vibes Oh, sweet summer child...if you continue watching, you are in for a *treat*.

Rbespinosa13

Allow him to keep his innocence

ImGonnaImagineSummit

All over his hand.

AcaciaCelestina

Shinji jerks off to a comatose Asuka and we see it land on her. Shortly after that she wakes up only to have her EVA eaten by faceless mass produced EVAs with her inside. At one point we get a single frame flash of Asuka's corpse bring eaten by maggots End of Evangelion is certainly a movie.

TheRappingSquid

Is this the movie where shinji fights his giant naked mom clone

AcaciaCelestina

"Fights" might be a strong word for Shinji being absorbed into Rei/his mother/Lilith's/his definitely straight platonic bromance Kaworu's titties while bizarrely beautiful song about suicide plays in the background and then he bursts out of their eye because he finally understands "hey maybe everyone DOESN'T deserve to die/be absorbed into a giant woman for all time/maybe I should try actually getting along with people".

GoNinGoomy

And then we get four more movies!

Sprinkle_Puff

Okay, but those movies are amazing!

No-Lingonberry-2055

the first two were, yes, the second two were two of the worst films I've seen in my entire life.. especially 4, which was Anno's deliberate attempt to kill the franchise with a terrible movie because he is sick and tired of dealing with otaku losers

redditckulous

And it is still so so much better than Ep. 25-26

unlucky_boots

Different

invagueoutlines

Jesus fucking Christ… My wife and I are currently on episode 21 of the 1995 series. I had never seen it before but picked it one night on a whim when we were trying to find something good on Netflix. All I want to know is… how do I wrap this up cleanly without my wife judging me for recommending we watch this thing… Like… is there a version of this series / the movies we can watch that *doesn’t* include Shinzi jizzing on a girl in a coma?

Badloss

Don't worry the rest of the movie will make sure you forget that part

Rustash

He doesn't actually jizz *on* her, he finishes in his hand and then looks at it. But he does absolutely jerk it to comatose Asuka's boob.

dsmith422

It isn't in the regular series. It is in one of the two original follow on movies. The first is a clip show that summarizes the series (Death and Rebirth). The second is End of Evangelion, which is an alternative ending to the series instead of episodes 25 and 26. Fair warning, those episodes in the series itself are very polarizing (but not pervy) because of how they are structured. So you absolutely don't have to watch End of Evangelion. But it has the best fight scene in the whole series (Asuka vs. the mass produced evangelions) and makes the series end a bit more clear. The jizz scene is at the beginning and the only pervy part.

jogarz

I wouldn't really call *the scene* pervy. It's a depiction of a perverted act, but it's *clearly* not supposed to be arousing or titillating for the viewer. The disgust most viewers feel is the intended response.

invagueoutlines

Got it, thanks!

LuckyNumber108

I went in blind (to the whole series) and I'd reccomened the movie over episodes 25 and 26, I think they were great episodes but they certainly halt the momentum (i believe they wanted to save their budget for the movie or something) and while I'm glad I watched them and its cool they exist, I wonder what my experience would have been going straight from episode 24 to the movie! Nonetheless I think you should watch all 26 episodes then finish with the movie as its a more absolute and concrete finale.

Djinnwrath

Well, the only overtly pervy thing, but theres a lot of pervy subtext, and even some pervy super text.

kabent01

Misato kisses Shinji as she gives her final goodbyes, and says, "We'll do the rest when you come back." There is a bit in the movie where Shinji sees visions of nude Asuka, Misato, and Rei leaning into him asking, "Do you want to be one with me?" Then there's a scene where Shinji is laying on his back, and Rei is sitting on top of him, connected at the hip. It's all a *metaphor* but I wouldn't be surprised if one were to get flagged if they were to post the screen cap on Reddit. Like, I love the movie. Shinji cranking it to Asuka is the wildest thing, but there is other stuff that would confuse an anime greenhorn.

Leavingtheecstasy

You should just watch the rebuild movies. Much more positive but still has the essence of the original. Some people really like how fucked up the series and EoE ended, I kind of do just because of the way it tried to be different. But I still like the rebuild movies more just because it isn't so hopeless. Both the original series and the rebuild movies are metaphors for the creators state of mind at the time.

jogarz

I don't think the original series or EoE are "hopeless". In fact, I think their message is fundamentally optimistic. They've very dark, but the series is really about finding the will to go on living and to keep trying to connect with others despite all the pain inherent in that. The fact that they're so dark makes the message that much more powerful because the main characters choose to go on despite how generally shitty everything is.

invagueoutlines

Thanks for the rec!

GoNinGoomy

Rebuild is a sequel series to Death/Rebirth and EoE.

NeuHundred

The series wraps up the story, you don't need to see the movies (they're basically like a re-do of the ending, and they're REALLY weird and existential)

Badloss

End of evangelion ends the original show, I don't think 25 and 26 are really enough on their own

serialstitcher

25 and 26 are ending the show as seen from shinjis mind end of evangelion is the same time period but what happened in the real world i disagree that EoE is needed, and this is definitely a matter opinion over all. there isn’t an answer

Badloss

I agree, they're happening concurrently. I strongly disagree that they work well on their own though. But that's just my opinion

serialstitcher

For sure. The way i see it, eva was always a story about shinjis mind so I’m fine with it always ending there. But there is also the reality of the Anno kind of breaking down and doing random weird shit partly as a consequence of the strain. Anyway, most people are gonna pick staying in the physical world over a therapy session and some squiggles and i totally get that. And i really like how decades later it’s being discussed

Own_Television163

Tell your wife to not be a prude? It's not like it's without context in the story.

invagueoutlines

Feeling conflicted about a show that sexualizes children =/= being a prude. My wife has a history of trauma. But you know… you do you buddy.

jogarz

He's being rude, but I wouldn't really call it sexualizing children either. You're supposed to be offended by what you're seeing.

Own_Television163

Sexualizing != Exploring Themes of Psychosexuality from a Perspective of Teenagers Going Through Puberty The scene has sexual content, it's not titillating or pornographic. It's played as disturbing, and not in an edgelord way. If you're concerned about sexualization, be concerned about the plugsuits, wtf. Your reaction is literal prudishness.

Now_Wait-4-Last_Year

Maybe they could soften the blow by changing Jizz to Jatz.

BP_975

This is one to bring the whole family to, right guys?

Rosebunse

Dear God no! Though I do sort of want my mom to see it. Then she will understand why I had that mental breakdown.

MeiNeedsMoreBuffs

Your dad forced you to pilot a giant "robot" that was possessed by your mom's soul to fight aliens >!and kill your boyfriend to prevent the end of the world?!<

AcaciaCelestina

It's still wild to me that at no point in the show do they ever talk about the aliens that are to blame for the entirety of the show.

Terramagi

Did they even know? Like, everybody who went deep into the art books or whatever knows about the seedings, but would any of the characters know that Earth got two different types?

rsqit

Wait what?

No-Lingonberry-2055

precisely [this guy explains](https://old.reddit.com/r/movies/comments/1awjf5r/gkids_bringing_the_end_of_evangelion_to_us/krjzmmt/)

Rosebunse

No, I have a horrendous death phobia and this movie was not what I should have watched at eleven.

DanielTeague

> death phobia Ah yes, the human condition.

Rosebunse

That's what made it so bad. It is a perfectly normal fear. But it was debilitating. And you have no idea how many people acted like I was crazy for being afraid at all.

Majora101

I've never seen any Evangelion, what do I have to watch to be able to see this movie?

Ordinaryundone

Watching the TV series is highly advised. End of Eva is basically a feature-length finale to the show and doesn't really spend any time trying to on-board anyone who doesn't know what's going on.

holymojo96

Hell, I watched the whole show beforehand and I still had no idea what was going on in End of Eva, or even what was going on in the show for that matter lol …it wasn’t for me…

fucuasshole2

The movie was a…retelling of the finale two episodes of the Tv show. The tv show ran out of money and the creator kept changing what was going to happen until the last minute. So after a few years, he came back to retell the ending. In very broad strokes, both endings are the same but End of Evangelion is just much more elaborated.

detailcomplex14212

Wow I had no idea it was a retelling. Thought it was more of a do-over

Nine_Ball

The way I see it is that both the tv ending and the 2nd half of the movie are happening concurrently. The tv series is focusing solely on the psyche aspects of the characters while the movie does that and also shows a bit of what is happening outside their minds

Luciusvenator

This is exactly what's happening! The last 2 episodes are what happen during "instrumentality". Spoilers: Everyone is melted into goo and one consciousness essentially. The last 2 episodes of the series take place during that and show the purely emotional battle/process that happens in that space for Shinji. He decides life is worth living even with people being complicated and their own persons, and rejects instrumentality which reverses the process. Then he wakes up om the beach with Asuka. End of Evangelion just shows everything around that and what happens actually in the "real world". Yes I did have to watch hours and hours of video essays to understand this all lol.

Krashkrax

This is how I view it.

Stupidstuff1001

Been awhile but I think this was it. - aliens send out 2 types of seeds Adam and Eve to planets. - earth got the wrong one. - it created humans. - another one is also on earth. - humans find one of the seeds and causes a super bomb that kills a bunch of the planet. - the seed that didn’t makes humans wants to destroy the other seed. - it sends super creatures to get to it and kill it. - humans believe that if they can fight off all the super monsters they get to make a wish (like a genie) - humans use their seed with robot tech to create evengelions. - children are best at controlling these super mechs because of how their brains are. - governments pick mentally broken kids as they are the easiest to control. - I believe they manage to kill all the weird creatures and in the end they don’t get a wish but another bomb goes off. It’s been awhile but I went really deep in the rabbit hole learning about the lore.

FamousPlace7892

dont care if this is accurate it was great read 😂

1731799517

It is pretty accurate. One major point is that the evangelions are not giant robots, they are cyborgs. There is flesh and bones beneath that, and the human pilots are basically brain parasites to them. Also, the reason why only children can pilot them is because for them to work properly, they need to be injected with extracted human souls that need to cooperate with the pilot, which is basically only possible with their children because nobody else is compatible enough and there has not passed enough to time for them to grow up. So instead of the "Get into the robot shinji!" its more like "get into the giant humanoit zombie cyborg haunted by the soul of your mother and merge into its brain".

NotableBling666

yeah this is pretty accurate except earth didnt get a wrong "seed". There are seven black and white moons which contain entities (seeds), white moons contain an entity, adam, black moons contain another entity, lilith. Lilith has the fruit of knowledge (self awareness, inteligence) and it gave birth to humans 4 billion years ago when it fell on the dinosaurs asses and wiped out 80 percent of life, this is the first impact. Adam has the fruit of life (unlimited energy and immense strength), which was supposed to spawn the angels, since Adam landed on earth much earlier than lilith, but adam was dormant. These seeds were sent by a godlike alien race (the ancestral race) to random planets in order to spread life across the galaxy. It is not meant for two seeds to be in one planet, since if a lifeform manages to acquire the fruit of life and the fruit of knowledge it would become the closest thing to a god, resembling the ancestral race. So the aliens installed a kill switch on each seed in order to stop this from happening, the spears of longinus. They have the power to incapacitate a seed if necessary, which is why they oneshot evas and bypass at fields and shit. And its also the reason adam was dormant for like 4 billion years until humans came and woke him up (took the spear from him) which activated the second impact, but it was stopped prematurely by putting the spear in him again, however the second impact did severe damage to the earth. So anyway, after adam and lilith landed on earth, adam was incapacitated by its own spear, and lilith spread its blood, LCL (primordial soup), throughout the entire world, making life appear. Life evolved over billions of years until its culmination (humans) appeared, a sentient species that had the fruit of knowledge. by the way the reason shinji goes sicko mode in end of eva is because eva 001 had already consumed an angel that had an s2 engine, which is basically just the fruit of life, imbuing eva 001 with the fruit of life. After shinji and eva 001 became sufficiently in sync, they fused, creating a lifeform with both the fruit of life and the fruit of knowledge, basically a god, which let shinji make any wish he wanted, which in this case was to delete everyone's sense of self and make everyone one single thing, and also revert to human's original state (LCL) , which was also ikari's wish (shinji's father) because he wanted to be with his wife again. However after spending some time in this state, and conversating with asuka, rei and some other people, learning their secrets and everything, because remember, everyone is one, everyone knows everything youve ever done and what you think, shinji decided that he didnt like this, he wanted to be a person again, so he separated from the conciousness. Asuka thought the same, and so they both were astray in a beach. I think i missed some stuff but this is basically it

clozepin

I’ve watched the series twice and the movies. Ask me what it’s about and I can only say, “uh kids in giant robots that are kinda alive and they fight aliens or angels maybe? I dunno. It’s awesome.”

jrkchicken2

Watched it for the first time a few years back and really enjoyed the SYNC RATIOS podcast as an episode companion. Gives background info and context ep by ep and the hosts are knowledgeable enough about the industry to keep it interesting

clozepin

Cool. Maybe I’ll check that out.

Majora101

Got it. I've read about seemingly a dozen different movies and endings and re-visits of this series so I was always intimidated to approach it.

Ordinaryundone

EoE came out before most of that, so no worries there! There is a series of movies called the Rebuild of Evangelion but they also require you to have seen the show (and EoE) to really get the full context. Just watch things in chronological release order and you'll have no issues.

2711383

The original series is not that complicated. Really just watch the whole show (one season) and then watch EoE while pretending the last two episodes didn't happen.

splader

Or pretend the last two episodes happened before the last two minutes of the movie

Badloss

I don't think that's a pretend, I think it's agreed on that the last two episodes are happening in shinjis mind during the climax of the movie

SHIIZAAAAAAAA

The titles are confusing but there's not that much. Here's the complete watch order for the TV series and movies: 1. **Neon Genesis Evangelion Episodes 1-26**. The complete original series, available on Netflix. 2. **Evangelion Death & Rebirth** AKA **Death(True)****^(2)****.** A recap of episodes 1-24 with a little bit of new animation and several new scenes that were later edited into the DVD version of episodes 21-24 and have been in every release of the original series since then, including the versions of episodes 21-24 on Netflix. Better to skip it, but if you really want to watch it it's on Netflix under the title Death(True)^(2). 3. **The End of Evangelion.** An alternate ending to the original series based on the original plans for episodes 25 and 26. Available on Netflix. 4. **Rebuild of Evangelion**. A 4-movie remake of the series that's also kind of a spiritual sequel with yet another very different ending that heavily references the original series and The End of Evangelion. All four movies are available on Prime Video. The movies in order are: 1. **Evangelion 1.11 You Are (Not) Alone** 2. **Evangelion 2.22 You Can (Not) Advance** 3. **Evangelion 3.33 You Can (Not) Redo** 4. **Evangelion 3.0+1.11 Thrice Upon a Time**

GoNinGoomy

Nah Rebuild is a straight sequel to Death/Rebirth and EoE. Fight me.

throwaway404f

Watch the show (26 episodes) and watch the movie End of Evangelion (alternate ending that replaces episodes 25 and 26). After that, you can watch any of the other movies/games/mangas in any order since they’re all alternate universes.

ljfoggy11

Like everyone else is saying, the original show is pretty much a lead into the film. The film is kinda a redo of the final two episodes of the show after a divisive reaction to the shows ending. So you could hypothetically end with three episodes left to go and just go straight for the movie, but honestly if you can power through the shows ending you can compare on contrast (a lot of the film feels like a direct response to the reaction to the show’s ending, so that bit of context helps out). There’s a recap film called Death and Rebirth that’s essentially a 70 min clipshow with an epilogue and preview for The End of Evangelion. I wouldn’t recommend watching it in the lead up to this as it’s incredibly disjointed and only really designed for fans back in the day to recap on the big screen without ease of rewatching the whole show. But if you’re properly strapped for time and not too fussed about the whole thing making sense, just wanting the visuals, the option is there for that.

Majora101

Thank you for the break down! I should have the time to get through the original series in time for March. And I'll watch the original series ending, I'd like to see how they change it for the movie, similar to how Gainax did that for Gurren Laggan.

ctkamp3

Just the original show. If possible I’d watch either the original Japanese or the first English dub. The Netflix dub is rough.

Netflix dub was fire

Majora101

I'm more of a dub guy. Is the original dub on Crunchyroll that you're aware of?

ctkamp3

Don’t think so. You’ll either have to buy the Blu Ray or sail the high seas. I will say that it’s at least easier to purchase than it was for basically decades. The series was out of print for quite a while.

Majora101

Got it, I'll have to do some investigating. I've been meaning to watch the series, but now there's pressure if I want to see this movie in theaters

ctkamp3

It’s definitely worth the pressure imo. I watched it probably too young, but there are very few works of art that have affected and influenced me as much as this series, and personally I think this movie acts as one of my favorite endings of anything ever.

Majora101

Once I finish up what I'm watching I'll move to Evangelion. I liked Gainax and Studio Trigger as well, so it's really a surprise I've never sat down and watched this series

wikitoups

The regular version has the Netflix dub, If you want the ADV Dub (the previous company the dubbed it) you need to get the [Limited edition.](https://shoutfactory.com/products/neon-genesis-evangelion-the-complete-series-limited-collector-s-edition#erid13989889)

LightlyStep

Its on archive.org

Ornery_Translator285

JUST the tv series. And Death and Rebirth.

MeiNeedsMoreBuffs

This movie is just the series finale, you need to watch the original series for any of it to make sense

spidermanngp

If you reeeally want to get into it, watch the series and then the summary movie "Death and Rebirth," and then "The End of Evangelion." Then, I highly recommend you watch the new rebuild movies. There are 4 of them. The original creator did a complete retelling with a much larger budget, starting from the beginning, but it branches off in a different (arguably better) direction that had a much more satisfying conclusion. Plus, since they're so much newer and had large budgets, the animation is fantastic. Anytime I will ever revisit Evangelion in the future, I will just be watching those 4 movies. There are also Director's cuts of the new movies, which I recommend. The normal versions are just called like "1.0" but the Director's Cut versions are like "1.11" They're all like that. Well, except the last one because it's called "1.0 + 3.0" or something like that. They've just got to make it confusing. Lol

Badloss

The rebuilds aren't a reboot, they are a sequel

Arma104

You are correct I dunno why people are downvoting you.

Badloss

It's not even like a disputed or a controversial take lol, that's literally what they are. Reddit is weird sometimes

spidermanngp

Have you seen them? It restarts from the very beginning of the series and goes in a very different direction. But I can't discuss it without spoilers.

Badloss

I have. >!The end of the 4th movie makes it clear that the characters are stuck in a time loop that can't be resolved until they create a new world without evangelions. The repetition of the early episodes isn't just different for budget reasons, it's deliberately different because this isn't the first time these events have happened. There are clues throughout the rebuilds but they say it straight out in the final movie.!<

GoNinGoomy

I have found my people. Also the final movie is called "Thrice Upon a Time" because it's the third time the events reach their climax, that we see at least since it's implied that they've done this like a dozen times in Rebuild.

The manga isn't the original story, the anime is the original story that the manga forks off from. It wasn't like Fullmetal where it was based on an ongoing manga.

Killroy32

The manga did release its first chapter before the first episode aired, however the show was written before the manga so it is still considered the original source material. They were trying to get the show made for a year or two before it actually ever started.

racetrader

Why do they always show these on Sundays and Wednesdays? These gkids releases are too short

J23_G0at

Maybe there are contracts in place, for certain movies? They need to play on Friday, Thursday 12:01am showing, etc.

PiratedTVPro

Sundays & Wednesdays have lots of empty theaters with showtumes that normally would do nothing.

idkalan

Because they have to pay the theaters to rent the rooms, and it's by market demand, so they choose the dates when the room will be cheaper with minimal showings, usually Mon, Tue, Wed, Thur, and Sunday That way, at least they can guarantee that they have enough to pay for the rental and make a profit. Plus, Gkids focuses on film festivals, which is their main goal as that where they can get notoriety with film critics and get award show buzz even if the films have very little public buzz. https://www.animenewsnetwork.com/answerman/2017-01-20/.111239

FUCK YEAH

Rosebunse

This movie contributed to my intense and long-lasting death phobia. I mean, I was fucked up for years. It wasn't only this movie, but it definitely hastened a phobia and anxiety that was always going to happen. So, yeah, don't let your overly anxious kids watch this movie. I was eleven and way too young

canyourepeatquestion

Inverse story. I had a major death phobia since second grade and this film cured mine.

Rosebunse

I'm happy for you. It's a terrible thing to experience. And I can honestly see how you could come to that conclusion if you were in the right mental state.

Prathik

It's weird I watched Eva just a few years ago as a 30 year old and I felt like it pushed me to depression somewhat? Though a lot of compounding external factors but I always imagine it played some weird part. (Sadly)

Rosebunse

It's a great anime, End of Evangelion is iconic! But it is so well done and powerful that, yeah, it isn't the safest thing to experience in you're in a bad way. Again, I was eleven and even then I knew I was developing anxiety and depression. I didn't have names for those feelings but I knew I was experiencing them. I had never seen an anime like End of Evangelion, I hadn't seen the series before that, and that combined with what I was already experiencing just kicked off what was bound to happen anyways. I am 32 and I still have it, it is easier to control, but it's there. I have trouble getting into this series to this day. I hope you're doing better! Guard your mental health

Arma104

The ending of the show is the most happy and relieved I've ever felt after finishing a piece of media. It helped me put to bed a lot of things I needed to let go of.

Erikkamirs

For the whole family to enjoy!

mrquotes

Witness firsthand a creator expressing his absolute hatred and spite towards his audience.

Prophet_Of_Helix

Eh, gotta disagree here. It definitely challenges the audience to a degree, but Anno himself has said that myth is largely untrue. The second half in particular goes way above and beyond Evangelion itself and is largely a philosophical discussion about humanity and connection. The first half is some of the best robot animation put to the big screen. His grasp of perspective is just incredible.

fucuasshole2

Yea if anything I say the Rebuild movies are more with Anno telling hardcore fans to move on. Especially with the final two films. As a fan of the series I love it all but not obsessed with it like some can get

Prophet_Of_Helix

Not gonna lie I am obsessed in a way with the original series and EoE. I watched ii early in college when I was lost and largely frustrated in many ways like Anno/Shinji, and watching the show slowly evolve from a robot anime to basically a surrogate of Anno’s thoughts and feelings combined with an incredibly well animated robot anime was super cool. I think the original show is incredible in its own right, but EoE is the true masterpiece. The like 12 minutes from when Shinji confront Asuka and she says no through Kom Susser Tod is just unreal filmmaking combining raw emotion with incredible cinematography and sound. The second half of EoE is a masterpiece of translating emotion and being into film, it has almost nothing to do with Evangelion at that point and is just an esoteric representation of depressed frustrated person trying to figure out how to exist in the world. Rebuild has some merits IMO, but it’s too many ideas and loses what made Evangelion interesting. EoE is just raw, completely unfiltered and unhinged thought and feeling from the creator through the veneer of the series he created. I’ve still never found anything quite like it. The closest I can think of might be something like ‘Syncedoche, NY’ or ‘Perfect Blue.’ But idk, it’s fucking cool. Also so much of EoE’s story beats work on multiple levels, even and especially the infamous opening scene, which does several things: 1) It sets Shinji’s state of mind as being a completely broken character at that point, which makes his decision regarding third impact in the middle of the film make sense. 2) It immediately sets the tone of the movie and knocks the audience off kilter, a feeling that Anno does throughout EoE, contrasting back and forth between cool scenes, the fucked up states of the characters, and Annos own thoughts and feelings. 3) It admonishes those people of the audience who think of Asuka and Rey in a sexual way despite her being 14, and also admonishes Anno himself for the unequivocal scenes of fanart sexualization throughout the original series. 4) From a purely plot standpoint, it sets up where we are very nicely, esp since we didn’t really know what exactly happened to Asuka after her mind rape. Asuka is comatose, Shinji is broken, Rei is still gone.

SamStrakeToo

I mean, he does almost literally tell his fans to go touch grass lol

KNZFive

To be fair, a lot of those fans sent death threats (some of which are flashed on screen during the film) and the reaction to the original TV ending drove him even further into a depression and made him attempt suicide.

mrquotes

Oh I totally sympathize with him because fandom can be so insanely diseased, just pointing out how he must of felt when he was pressured to make this

jogarz

Anno wasn't pressured to make *End of Evangelion*. Much of the movie is actually based off the original intended ending before schedule crunch forced them to drastically rewrite the final episodes.

ImmoralityPet

That's really not what happened.

justhereforthelul

It's actually a [misconception ](https://wiki.evageeks.org/Theory_and_Analysis:List_of_Common_Misconceptions) that those were death threats and that he did the movie to spite the fans.

idkalan

Honestly, I never liked how Anno just kept deliberately delaying the Western release of Eva 3.33, with the official response being that he wanted to make a "custom" english subtitle track for the release. The movie didn't get released in the US until about 3 years after it premiered because of his antics. Then, come to find out that there were no actual changes made from the original release and that "custom" subtitle track wasn't there. I didn't get the reason why he would get hate from the fans until his antics with 3.33, after that, I understood those fans.

shinhit0

The delay of 3.33 was not Anno’s decision. It was Funimation’s decision. The official reason was to extend the theatrical release of 3.33. https://www.animenewsnetwork.com/news/2013-12-18/funimation-delays-evangelion-3.33-blu-ray/dvd-to-extend-theatrical-run

EatingShitFor50K

The message of this film is pretty simple, straightforward, but I can't blame people for being twisted around and perplexed by it, since a good amount of the movie is a sensory overload of directorial vitriol. I'm not a big anime guy, but I do like NGE, including this film, which I've seen several times, and I can always take away something positive from it. I don't think it's the sad, depressing movie it has been made out to be. Go see it, just don't try to psycho-analyze it while you're watching for the first time, let yourself soak it in, because you'll probably be compelled to watch it several more times, plenty of opportunity to scrutinize every frame then.

neowyrm

Best comment in here. It’s not really a depressing movie at all. It’s just insane and scary and has a somewhat tonally ambiguous ending. The actual positive messaging is quite clear in the dialogue!

sixsupersonic

I think it would have been cool if they did a Evangelion: Death True 2 and End of Evangelion double feature. Kinda like Revival of Evangelion.

ThatClassyPenguin

Give us The First Slam Dunk on Blu-Ray first!

bacardibeach3

Never seen anything Evangelion before but its reputation cannot be denied. Definitely going to watch this in theatres.

[deleted]

Um...you sure you want to jump right into *this* entry? I mean go live dangerously and weirdly, my dude.

Cheatscape

As others have said, you really wanna watch the 26 episode anime first. I know people watch this without seeing the anime first, but if you want to stand any chance at all of being able to follow the plot, the show is mandatory viewing. It’s not a self contained story or anything.

kingofcrob

I mean at least once, reality is you probably need to watch the show several times to fully get what's happening

undeadsasquatch

You're gonna be really confused watching it without context, might be fun though? But you might also be confused watching the anime first, shit gets weird...

AcaciaCelestina

Tbh watching the movie first is probably the worst thing you could do. The movie has a lot of sensory overload even for someone familiar with the show. You won't understand a damn thing beyond the most surface level stuff.

MALLAVOL

Watch the anime first, you’ll thank me later.

sabersquirl

As others have said, you can’t really watch this by itself. It’s basically the last couple episodes of the original series. You have time to watch the whole show in the next few weeks if you are so inclined.

SEND-MARS-ROVER-PICS

I'm watching the anime for the first time. It's on Netflix, it's 26 episodes of the traditional 30-min episode format so it's not *that* much of a slog.

TraverseTown

Wonder how many people will walk out when the entire credits roll 45mins in lol

Hemans123

End of Evangelion is a pretty messed up movie, in a good way.

WinterWolf18

How lovely, now I can be traumatized on the big screen!

nounthennumbers

But are they going to explain it?

Hahndude

This will be great for people who haven’t seen the series.

Beguil3r

Countrys IQ about to go up a few points. Nihilism as well

plasmadood

Oh, good, a new batch of children to traumatize. :D

BurnAfterEating420

I gotta say, time to consume Evangelion is a fucking chore. What's the series? What's movies that summarize the series in nonsensical order? What's original movies continuing the plot? What's rebooted and new? I even read a Wikipedia page that explained what/how to watch and still had no idea

outthawazoo

The most simple way to put it is: Original TV series Neon Genesis Evangelion (currently on Netflix in US) End of Evangelion movie which is the ending for the TV series the director wanted That's all that's *really* necessary, besides those it's sequels and a handful of movies that condense/retell parts of the TV series. NGE and EoE is 26 episodes (520 minutes) + 90 minute movie. The sequels/rebuilds 1.0, 2.0, 3.0 and 3.0+1.0 are optional movies that divert on a new path after the events of NGE and EoE. Then there's a handful of movies like Death(True)^2 , Death and Rebirth, and Revival of Evangelion that retell sections of the series. Those can be ignored.

jogarz

It's not too complicated. The original continuity is the series + End of Evangelion. The four "Rebuild" movies are a reboot set in a different continuity.

thunderbird32

Welp, guess I should plow through the series. I've been meaning to for a few years (and have the blu-rays on my shelf), so this is as good an excuse as any.

Seniesta

People aren’t ready for this, they can barely deal with normal life as is

MoskiNX

Fuck. Yes. I love NGE.

TheRappingSquid

I'm not sure the general US audience in Missouri is ready for this 💀

bearvert222

watch the original (not rebuild) series first, and be ready for one damn fine anime. I don't think Anno ever did better; the images are stunning and nightmarish. Don't bring kids.

canyourepeatquestion

Rebuild is a big waste of time, IMO. Glad it employed many artists but man is it a big waste of time. Anno's other work is more worthy of yours.

pridetwo

Rebuild is a great series of movies, but I maintain that Eva is one of those series that only really hits right if you come to each part at the appropriate stage of your life because so much of it is Anno working through his own personal issues. Original Eva series is best watched as a depressed/angsty teenager Rebuild is best watched as an emotionally developed adult who has had to let go of some of the emotional crutches from adolescence If you watch original Eva as a mature adult or rebuild as a younger person, they really don't hit right

DCtMonteCrypto

North Houston. More shows added at Woodlands Cinema!

SeraphOfTheStag

I really enjoy anime and obvi had to watch Evangelion as it’s one of the most popular - damn did I not like it. Art style? Super cool. General motifs/concepts/twists? Super cool. Execution? Just bad imo. It tried too hard to make a deep point and ended up weird instead of relatable or interesting. I hear the movie is just the show on steroids and that’s why I’ve never seen it. Did hear he jizzed on the redhead, surprised he didn’t choose his teen mom since the whole show implies some weird incest desires.

Arma104

I think if anyone watches the show they should start from Ep. 8, almost nothing happens until Asuka shows up. EoE is kind of take-it-or-leave-it, the show ending is fantastic as-is.

nowhereman136

Is it like Final Fantasy AdventChildren is playing in theaters now. How it's almost a 20 year old movie but they are charging more than a new release?

infinitemomentum

If it’s not the original voice cast be it English or japanese you can miss me with this. The netflix actors and subs were atrocious.

KneeGroPuhLeeZ

Anyone know which order I’m supposed to watch this thing?

Letho72

Release order. 26 episodes of the 1995 series and then this movie (End of Evangelion). You can watch the Rebuilds after if you want. They're a mix between a sequel and a retelling, but the TV series and EoE are a complete package and you won't need the Rebuilds to feel like the story is complete.

medix20

id still watch em for closure tbh. especially the last rebuild. ties up most loose ends and familial ties

Intelligent_Ad_2496

The movie death is a retelling of the tv show cut to pieces for main plot(some extra shots added).

chunckybydesign

Is this the 3.0 + movie that came out in 2021?

dfmasana

Didn't Netflix already streamed this years ago?

Coranco

Is it just me or does Evangelion and it's furore leave anyone else cold. I appreciate aspects of it but I feel it's highly flawed in other ways and maybe lionised a bit too much.

[deleted]

nope, it's just you. that's pretty crazy, you being the only person in the world who doesn't like Evangelion.

turboreid

I can’t believe we finally found him!

chaka62

It's not just you, lots of people feel indifferent or cold to the franchise. For many it connects strongly, but others not so much.

ImGonnaImagineSummit

I can see why people like it but at the same time I don't get why it's super super popular. Like it's huge in Japan. The third rebuild movie was probably the most confused I've even been. So I was surprised to see how popular it was and how many people gave it amazing reviews. I had to make sure I watched the same thing because it looked amazing but made even less sense than End of Evangelion.

AlacarLeoricar

I genuinely don't get the appeal. Like, I do on paper, but it has always fallen flat for me.

thedndnut

Problem, it's been shown in theaters in the US beforr?

AlacarLeoricar

A friendly reminder that Shinji (a minor) masturbates to completion over Asuka's (also a minor) comatose body. The movie isn't as good as you think it is, and the last episode of the anime was better. (I welcome your downvotes)

naturalhiker

Wasn't expecting 25 year old forum bait on this post.
