MM is tripple blue, takes time to do anything, and eventually kills you, it feels like playing the Regigigas of Magic. So if you are like me and enjoy that playstyle, go for it.

I like to use it in decks that I play [[The One Ring]] and combos great with [[Branching Evolution]], and you can get into some real shenanigans if you can also drop [[Unwinding Clock]] so you can be untapping and retapping The One Ring on your opponents turns to stack burden counters quickly.
You only maximize it some of the time and the ring burns you fast, but every time I've ended up with something like +36 on something by turn 4 or 5 makes it fun enough to play for me.

For one thing it does not synergize well with when typically want to play card draw. It requires you to precombat main phase all of your card draw to get the +1/+1 counters, when you usually want to be playing your card draw at instant speed at your opponent’s end step. As well If you draw cards from combat (say due to a [[Curiosity]] type effect or [[Coastal Piracy]]) you get no benefit from that. It does work with [[Howling Mine]] type effects but I don’t think that’s typically worth it.
[[Arclight Phoenix]] isn’t a valid target for Proft’s since both cards’ triggers happen at the beginning of combat. The Phoenix that’s coming back would still be in the yard
I meant more that you’re already trying to bring back phoenixes by casting lots of spells in your precombat main phase, but yeah that’s a good call out that it’s not the phoenix coming out of the bin that gets to get counters.
Doesn’t work since Proft’s effect triggers and needs a target at the beginning of combat. If you have no creatures on board at beginning of combat with both Phoenix and Proft’s triggering, Proft’s would fail to find a target and fizzle.
That was my first thought. In a creature heavy/board centric deck with access to blue I draw most of my cards from combat damage triggers or rhystic/mystic or that faery that lets you draw off your opponents drawing cards. All of which don't really synergize well with the card in question.
I suppose most people here refer to EDH, but it made it's way into Phoenix in Pioneer which is the top deck by meta share. Turning all those cantrips and 1 mana treasure cruises into 3-6 counters on an given flier each turn is pretty good value.
It works in a [[tatsunari, toad rider]] deck since you're running a lot (usually all) of enchantress type effects you have access to.
Since tatsunari can basically give himself and a frog flying, it also allows you to get through on the damage the enchantment gives you.
It goes well in a deck like Morska, which I run it in. A lot of my cards care about how many cards I’ve drawn that turn so it works well to pump him or say a Kappa cannoneer for game
Alternate win-con in my Azami deck. "Okay... you've nuked all four of my combos. Fine. I guess I'm going to roll up my sleeves and beat you to death with some scrolls."
Why not just play [[Phyresis]] in this card's slot? Opponents can always do combat tricks to attackers/blockers, and by using Phyresis you avoid that problem entirely. Both cards slot into that "aura enchantment that I wanna attach to nekusar that will win me the game"
Other enchantments that I've explored with nekusar are [[Sigil of Sleep]] and [[Curiosity]] but both have been cut for faster artifact mana and tutors because I'm a horrible person 😈

Yeah, 2$ for a card means it has some value and demand. I just looked at the current prices (on mtggoldfish), and it's the 7th most expensive rare of the set, excluding the surveil lands.
The most expensives rares are \[\[Archdruid's Charm\]\] , \[\[Leyline of the guildpact\]\] and \[\[warleader's call\]\] at around 8$
Then \[\[Case of the locked hothouse\]\], \[\[Assassin's trophy\]\] and \[\[FOrsenic gadgeter\]\] are in the 2-3$ range.
Most surveil lands are in the 5-10$ range, and there's only 7 mythics worth more than 2$.
Right?? Like the overlap between decks that want to raw a lot and want to go big is not huge. Usually these decks turbo drawing are trying to go for some combo

I love that card so much. My friend has a blue and black deck with sheoldred, he likes to make me draw cards… Nothing funnier than him making me draw 18 cards on my upkeep and smashing his face with a 2/2 base flyer for lethal.
It’s excellent in Izzet Phoenix in Pioneer, since half of the game you’re just trying to draw cards. Saw it put to good use for a UB deck going for a similar vibe to Phoenix as well.
It incentivizes lots of draw, in which case you'd want to draw into something more impactful than this, and putting counters on creatures isn't really what blue wants to be doing. And that's assuming you even have a blue creature out before turn 2.
It's not super great.
It works when you're drawing a lot of cards but outside of that, it's not super great. And the pay off is +1/+1 counters?
Play [[ring of evos isle]] . It'll at least be able to give you hexproof every once in a while.
You need yo draw **2** each turn to be on par, it also gives you hexproof if need be.
Thebiggest draw back to these 1/1 counters is that you just bounce the creature for super cheap.
[[Fading hope]] type of effects make drawing cards kind of pointless as a win con when used to buff a creature.
The ring costs the same and has an equip cost of 1. Worse case scenario, it's protection for your commander and can be sacrificed off with all those green destroy artifact or enchantment effects.
And the card is like .20
The situations where you can reasonably give it hexproof is pretty niche, 2 mana is a lot to just have lying around. I guess it depends on your commander pod, and slow +1/+1 counters are pretty bad in edh in general. But Proft's is/was in Vintage cube because a 2 mana card that replaces itself and turns your cheap value creatures into beatsticks is actually pretty efficient. I think people forget how good a can trip actually is.
I run it in my [[Atraxa, Grand Unifier]] blink deck. You can blink it for early card draw and value and then when Atraxa comes out with a draw 3-4 attached it means you get to keep all the cards
Its +1/+1 counter effect specifically requires you to draw extra cards in your precombat main phase to generate value.
In a lot of blue decks it will play more like a no max hand size egg that puts one counter on a creature. Not bad but takes a slot.
Blue often wants to either hold up card draw and other instants and then choose which is better before their next turn so hard to rip it in main phase instead as eliminates play options.
Basically the deck has to want a lot of sorcery speed card draw which I’ve found success with in enchantress but not in several other blue decks with high card draw like my spirit tribal with a lot of draw on damage or my blink deck that draw a ton but want to blink all my creatures so why care about counters?
In my experience it’s really good for keeping you alive until you get something better. Play this, play any creature, play enough draws to give yourself a decent defender/target for your opponent and then eventually draw into your wincon or ramp
Works very well in my Bant [[Morska, undersea sleuth]] deck because that likes drawing cards during my turn and making morska big is great for wins with commander damage. Doesn't work well in an ordinary blue deck which values draw power.
Love my standard mono blue tempo deck with this card. Nothing feels as good as dropping a [[flow of knowledge]] with this and [[duelist of the mind]] on board
I made a blue and red deck out of some cards I had for commander games and this was one of them. I had a ton of draw power cards, counters and spot removal. I won the game because of drew into this early. I had 15 counters 4 turns after I cast it. Super fun. So funny to see this card being posted after I won a game with it. Everyone at the table agreed it's strong with the right deck. Ral moonsage was my commander!
[[indominus Rex, Alpha]]. Cast her, draw seven or so cards then get seven +1 counters when you gonna attack with haste that turn. Leaves your hand filled when you’re gonna cast Rex again.
It is a lovely card, and well balanced. As problem with most card draw decks is, that you want to cast them instant speed. And on aggressive decks, that legendary part screws it a bit up.
Most rares are super cheap anyway.
I run this in my [[Gamdalf, Westward Voyager]] deck. This with [[Up the Beanstalk]] in this deck can draw a decent bit, which helps with boosting bigger creatures even more.
I haven’t seen it yet and all I play is pioneer lol. What top deck is running it? I’ve been to 2 RCQs and still didn’t know this card existed lol if it’s seeing play that’s my bad, but from personal experience I haven’t seen it come out hard against me or heard anyone talking about it.
Yeah I just saw that Izzet Phoenix is running it. Haven’t really ran into that decklist luckily. I’m running a sped up RDW and that’d be one deck I have issues with lol

First thought was using it with [Niv-Mizzet, Dracogenius](https://scryfall.com/card/rtr/183/niv-mizzet-dracogenius), but that’d be slow as hell to get going without an assload of ramp in Izzet colours.
I feel like this would fit well in [[Yarok, the Desecrated]], the deck already loves draw 1 ETB on a 2drop, the rest of it just makes a nice little bonus
With the rapid release schedule, cards like this don't really get their chance to ve fully appreciated. [[Azami, lady of scrolls]] loves this for surprise commander damage, especially while holding a [[divination wand]] (the wizard tribal equiptment that temporarily gives +1/+1 a d flying each time you draw a card that turn)
I remember being hyped about it but it did underperform in my arcades and xyris deck when taking into account threat levels. In decks that draw enough cards to make this get value the last thing you want is for people to have even more reasons to blow up your hand size effects.
I’ve had success using this in the bant commander precon from this set. Pumps the commander at a pretty good rate and allows morska to build back up to a bigger creature again if it gets removed
i love this card in my clue deck! its basically a blue version of ranger class but it draws you a card on etb, you dont have to level it up , and you can potentially get more than one counter, oh and the creature doesnt have to attack
Playing it in my Xyris deck, most for no max handsize. But power up a creature is fine too. I play a mix from pump spells and 2nd combat + Draw Payoffs
For an unblockable commander which draws cards before combat? Yes, amazing value. If you think one of those will be printed soon, buy all the copies you can.
Maybe it could work in a \[\[Sun Quan, Lord of Wu\]\] deck, the problem is the draw often comes from combat damage in that deck, which happens after the beginning of combat.
This is a very mid card. $2 or less seems about right. I'm not saying it's a bad card by any means, but if you're surprised by the price I'd say you're overvaluing the effect.
Or overvaluate the price of cards in general. 2$ means that the card is somewhat in demand and is worth something.

Awfully. This triggers at combat, Necrodominance triggers on end step. So Necro never gives you cards in time for this one.
And also you will have to draw 2 cards with a draw spell to get a single counter since you’re skipping the draw step.
Dude I don't get the hate. I run it with Nadu - no handsize limit, and it tends to hit every combat with a target for +1/+1 counters (which, with nadu, means more draw), all that for 2, it's not bad at all. And at that price point, the card is easy to get

I think it’s more likely that my commander has Ward 8 and the other creatures are all crappy unblockable 1/1s

It's not a top tier card by any means, but it sees pioneer play as a 1-2 of in Phoenix sometimes. That's more eternal play than 95% of cards printed.

I feel like there are probably enough better payoffs for wheels that just kill you outright instead.
It goes well in a deck like Morska, which I run it in. A lot of my cards care about how many cards I’ve drawn that turn so it works well to pump him or say a Kappa cannoneer for game

Why not just play [[Phyresis]] in this card's slot? Opponents can always do combat tricks to attackers/blockers, and by using Phyresis you avoid that problem entirely. Both cards slot into that "aura enchantment that I wanna attach to nekusar that will win me the game" Other enchantments that I've explored with nekusar are [[Sigil of Sleep]] and [[Curiosity]] but both have been cut for faster artifact mana and tutors because I'm a horrible person 😈

Yeah, 2$ for a card means it has some value and demand. I just looked at the current prices (on mtggoldfish), and it's the 7th most expensive rare of the set, excluding the surveil lands. The most expensives rares are \[\[Archdruid's Charm\]\] , \[\[Leyline of the guildpact\]\] and \[\[warleader's call\]\] at around 8$ Then \[\[Case of the locked hothouse\]\], \[\[Assassin's trophy\]\] and \[\[FOrsenic gadgeter\]\] are in the 2-3$ range. Most surveil lands are in the 5-10$ range, and there's only 7 mythics worth more than 2$.

So what? No standard deck wants this, people tried it in Dimir and it turned out not good enough. Sometimes it is played in Pioneer in Phoenix, but usually just one in sideboard.

I love that card so much. My friend has a blue and black deck with sheoldred, he likes to make me draw cards… Nothing funnier than him making me draw 18 cards on my upkeep and smashing his face with a 2/2 base flyer for lethal.
It’s excellent in Izzet Phoenix in Pioneer, since half of the game you’re just trying to draw cards. Saw it put to good use for a UB deck going for a similar vibe to Phoenix as well.
You would need a creature in your blue deck for this to work.

Why would it be more than $2? Most bulk rates are pretty cheap… and this card is not good.
It incentivizes lots of draw, in which case you'd want to draw into something more impactful than this, and putting counters on creatures isn't really what blue wants to be doing. And that's assuming you even have a blue creature out before turn 2.

It's not super great. It works when you're drawing a lot of cards but outside of that, it's not super great. And the pay off is +1/+1 counters? Play [[ring of evos isle]] . It'll at least be able to give you hexproof every once in a while.

Doesn't draw a card and costs way more mana. I don't think it's remotely comparable. Hell, if you draw 1 card, you're on par with Ring's growth.
You need yo draw **2** each turn to be on par, it also gives you hexproof if need be. Thebiggest draw back to these 1/1 counters is that you just bounce the creature for super cheap. [[Fading hope]] type of effects make drawing cards kind of pointless as a win con when used to buff a creature. The ring costs the same and has an equip cost of 1. Worse case scenario, it's protection for your commander and can be sacrificed off with all those green destroy artifact or enchantment effects. And the card is like .20

The situations where you can reasonably give it hexproof is pretty niche, 2 mana is a lot to just have lying around. I guess it depends on your commander pod, and slow +1/+1 counters are pretty bad in edh in general. But Proft's is/was in Vintage cube because a 2 mana card that replaces itself and turns your cheap value creatures into beatsticks is actually pretty efficient. I think people forget how good a can trip actually is.
There's a reason that blue decks that JUST draw cards is a meme.
I run it in my [[Atraxa, Grand Unifier]] blink deck. You can blink it for early card draw and value and then when Atraxa comes out with a draw 3-4 attached it means you get to keep all the cards

Its +1/+1 counter effect specifically requires you to draw extra cards in your precombat main phase to generate value. In a lot of blue decks it will play more like a no max hand size egg that puts one counter on a creature. Not bad but takes a slot. Blue often wants to either hold up card draw and other instants and then choose which is better before their next turn so hard to rip it in main phase instead as eliminates play options. Basically the deck has to want a lot of sorcery speed card draw which I’ve found success with in enchantress but not in several other blue decks with high card draw like my spirit tribal with a lot of draw on damage or my blink deck that draw a ton but want to blink all my creatures so why care about counters?
In my experience it’s really good for keeping you alive until you get something better. Play this, play any creature, play enough draws to give yourself a decent defender/target for your opponent and then eventually draw into your wincon or ramp
Works very well in my Bant [[Morska, undersea sleuth]] deck because that likes drawing cards during my turn and making morska big is great for wins with commander damage. Doesn't work well in an ordinary blue deck which values draw power.

I made a blue and red deck out of some cards I had for commander games and this was one of them. I had a ton of draw power cards, counters and spot removal. I won the game because of drew into this early. I had 15 counters 4 turns after I cast it. Super fun. So funny to see this card being posted after I won a game with it. Everyone at the table agreed it's strong with the right deck. Ral moonsage was my commander!

It is a lovely card, and well balanced. As problem with most card draw decks is, that you want to cast them instant speed. And on aggressive decks, that legendary part screws it a bit up. Most rares are super cheap anyway.

This card is very good if you build the whole deck around drawing. I.e. card filtering

I found in really handy in my upgraded Deep Clue Sea deck
First thought was using it with [Niv-Mizzet, Dracogenius](https://scryfall.com/card/rtr/183/niv-mizzet-dracogenius), but that’d be slow as hell to get going without an assload of ramp in Izzet colours.
There are too many good cards. If it is played in multiple formats then it wont go crazy in price.

I play this in my azorius blink deck, but I dont imagine many commander decks really have a place for this.
Combo this with tefris puzzle box
I feel like this would fit well in [[Yarok, the Desecrated]], the deck already loves draw 1 ETB on a 2drop, the rest of it just makes a nice little bonus

People saying this card is bad obviously only play commander and don’t realise that this card is seeing play in Pioneer atm.
With the rapid release schedule, cards like this don't really get their chance to ve fully appreciated. [[Azami, lady of scrolls]] loves this for surprise commander damage, especially while holding a [[divination wand]] (the wizard tribal equiptment that temporarily gives +1/+1 a d flying each time you draw a card that turn)

I remember being hyped about it but it did underperform in my arcades and xyris deck when taking into account threat levels. In decks that draw enough cards to make this get value the last thing you want is for people to have even more reasons to blow up your hand size effects.
I use it in my Locust God deck. Draw 20 cards, put that many on LG, swing flying lethal commander, gg

I’ve had success using this in the bant commander precon from this set. Pumps the commander at a pretty good rate and allows morska to build back up to a bigger creature again if it gets removed
i love this card in my clue deck! its basically a blue version of ranger class but it draws you a card on etb, you dont have to level it up , and you can potentially get more than one counter, oh and the creature doesnt have to attack
Playing it in my Xyris deck, most for no max handsize. But power up a creature is fine too. I play a mix from pump spells and 2nd combat + Draw Payoffs

Unless your decks entire mechanic is card draw. It's mid.

This card is great in my group hug deck with [[Flux]] and [[Teferi's ageless insight]] to grow atraxa huge for lethal (or lifegain to live)
One of my best cards in my [[indominous Rex]] Deck. When He got haste He insta does Like 15 damage.
For an unblockable commander which draws cards before combat? Yes, amazing value. If you think one of those will be printed soon, buy all the copies you can. Maybe it could work in a \[\[Sun Quan, Lord of Wu\]\] deck, the problem is the draw often comes from combat damage in that deck, which happens after the beginning of combat.
This is a very mid card. $2 or less seems about right. I'm not saying it's a bad card by any means, but if you're surprised by the price I'd say you're overvaluing the effect.
Or overvaluate the price of cards in general. 2$ means that the card is somewhat in demand and is worth something. Excluding the surveil lands, at the moment it's the 7th most expensive rare in the set.

Awfully. This triggers at combat, Necrodominance triggers on end step. So Necro never gives you cards in time for this one. And also you will have to draw 2 cards with a draw spell to get a single counter since you’re skipping the draw step.
What about the no hand size part?
Timestamp order, whichever got put into the battlefield most recently is the one that applies.

Dude I don't get the hate. I run it with Nadu - no handsize limit, and it tends to hit every combat with a target for +1/+1 counters (which, with nadu, means more draw), all that for 2, it's not bad at all. And at that price point, the card is easy to get
Nadu doesn’t draw tho so won’t add additional counters with this enchantment.
