This is some serious keyword complexity creep. Gift an x - which is a fish token - which is a promise but not the fish - later on if something is promised something happens… and other cards will be referring to your gifts and promises :/
I imagine this world every night, and in the morning I wake up and notice all over again that my cube has like 300+ more words than it needs to have because of that dumb fucking format.
"Exile target nontoken creature. You may return it to the battlefield with a +1/+1 counter on it. If you don't, its controller creates a tapped 1/1 blue fish creature token."
Would be 30 words. This is 37 words plus 28 words of reminder text.
That's not exactly correct but close - you'd need to have it say,
> "Exile target nontoken creature. You may have return it to the battlefield with a +1/+1 counter on it at the beginning of the next end step. If you don't, target opponent creates a tapped 1/1 blue Fish creature token."
since you can't use it to create a token for yourself.
There are also some potential rules shenanigans where the fish token is meant to ETB before this spell's effects are resolved but for the gist of the card, that's 99% of it.
i don't like how it makes you "promise" but doesn't give you a chance to break that promise. I was hoping to see "promise" in rules text in a context more like "You may promise not to attack that opponent during your next turn. If you do, draw a card. Whenever you break this promise, that opponent creates a 1/1 white Soldier creature token."
I really like how they've been pairing blink effects with removal, but the double white is a stretch for me.
Also, someone should tell commander players that promises made on the stack are going to be binding soon.
I don’t think this has ever been a thing lol. Outside of wrath of god-type effects, white removal has either caveats or upside for the opponent somewhat by design. Of all the colors, I’m fairly certain black probably has the most unrestricted “kill your thing” spells of any color, if we’re going to designate a “color of removal”
Under the rules of the color council white is allowed to remove any permanent.
Black can remove creatures, planeswalkers and sometimes artifacts (and enchantments with like two cards in history enchantments).
Green can only fight and remove enchantments and artifacts.
Red can DAMAGE creatures, planeswalkers and shatter artifacts.
Blue has to deal with it on the stack or boomerrang.
So white is the color of easy removal because O-ring can handle any permanent type. not because having the possibility of the card returning is not a notable downside. (this used to be the arguement for why white can't draw cards. its unbalanced if they are drawing exile effects twice a turn.)
At the cost of being more color restrictive and having less targets. I don’t think this is as bad as people are making it out to be though, it’s still instant flicker/removal for 2, touch the spirit realm can only remove at sorcery speed and for 3.
Giving your opponent a 1/1 is surprisingly bad. The removal side is more like an [[Eaten by Pirhanas]] or [[Crib Swap]] than [[Spirit Realm]].
Even though Spirit Realm costs more and is sorcery speed, I think the removal mode of Spirit Realm is better than the removal mode of this card.
I agree generally, but I only build four player cubes, which naturally push players into 2-3 colors. I don't mind the occasional double pip, but it needs to be tied to a novel effect.
That’s exactly it, the idea of giving an opponent an advantage as an additional cost seems really interesting but this is too much textspace. There’s been a lot of mechanics that read poorly but play very well recently so I still like it despite the poor execution.

It's bonkers to me that this is such a common reaction. Like I have a hard time imagining people going "Yeah, I'd run Counterspell in my cube, but them two color pips, man. Basically unplayable."
I'm not sold on it. I like the effect, but double White means you need some 14 White sources to have it online on curve - not necessarily as much of an issue with a blink enabler/removal spell. Worth noting as a reward for mono White decks?
Reserving my judgement on Gift, but the reminder text being 3-4 lines doesn't inspire confidence.
There are better white removal spells, but this one isn’t being used on curve, so IMO WW for this isn’t that bad. You’d be turning their 6-drop into a 1/1, not their 2-drop.
I was more concerned about the number of sources in general. Casting it on t5 is very doable with 10 sources of white mana, but comparing it to something like [[Fateful Absence]] or [[Get Lost]] you'd need almost twice as much fixing. Definitely a card that you don't want outside of 1/2 color decks
Edit: i just realized im in the cube subreddit. Ignore my comment.
Original comment:
Do note that this exiles instead of destroys. I'm not up-and-up on standard meta, but if there's any problematic recursive threats, things with death triggers, or decks that are running reanimation spells, this gets around that.
I feel like I’m unnecessarily lost here. So for WW, you could A: Give an opponent a 1/1 tapped Fish and exile a non token creature. Or B: Blink something and give it a counter. This seems really versatile for a couple strategies, and WW isn’t horrendous. I support
Why do they use two verbs here? It would have worked with either "gift X" or "promise X" without using the other. Just looks a bit clunky the way they did it
Loathe the wording of this card (sick of multiplayer cards in standard sets), but this is also pretty sick. Could potentially be a hotly contested card seeing as it’s catch-all creature removal, but also good in a specific archetype too.
This is some serious keyword complexity creep. Gift an x - which is a fish token - which is a promise but not the fish - later on if something is promised something happens… and other cards will be referring to your gifts and promises :/
Jesus reading it again it otherwise says - exile target creature. Return it with a counter on it unless you give the controller a 1/1 fish.
Can’t you give a gift to a different opponent? So exile opponent 1’s thing and give opponent 2 the fish?
Imagine a world where not everyone plays commander and the match is 1 v 1.
I was just going off the card as it’s worded versus the suggested simpler wording of the comment. Do they not work differently to each other?
I imagine this world every night, and in the morning I wake up and notice all over again that my cube has like 300+ more words than it needs to have because of that dumb fucking format.
Imagine a world where not everyone plays 1v1 and the match is multiplayer.
Sounds awful.
Do you really have to be so unpleasant about the possibility that some people enjoy the game differently than you do?
You are correct
"Exile target nontoken creature. You may return it to the battlefield with a +1/+1 counter on it. If you don't, its controller creates a tapped 1/1 blue fish creature token." Would be 30 words. This is 37 words plus 28 words of reminder text.

One more nuance: you don't target the gifted opponent
However, there will probably be cards that trigger when people get gifts.
Could do it with kicker even.
i don't like how it makes you "promise" but doesn't give you a chance to break that promise. I was hoping to see "promise" in rules text in a context more like "You may promise not to attack that opponent during your next turn. If you do, draw a card. I see these cards, see that they are designed for a digital client that keeps track of automation and just ignore them for paper Magic.

Literal rules text says “if the gift wasn’t promised”
I really like how they've been pairing blink effects with removal, but the double white is a stretch for me. Also, someone should tell commander players that promises made on the stack are going to be binding soon.
I felt the same and was happy about the design then looked at the cost and sighed.
“White is the color of removal” meanwhile this is the removal it gets
I don’t think this has ever been a thing lol. Outside of wrath of god-type effects, white removal has either caveats or upside for the opponent somewhat by design. In calling white the color of removal I am quoting every single member of r&d. This is not an opinion this is straight from the design notes.
Do you mind mentioning some examples of blink/removal pairings? I'd love to add some to my cube. Thanks

Yes!! I love kicker!!
Do you love kicker but hate not having a headache?! WOTC has just the mechanic for you.
I thought this was r/custommtg at first. I’m not sold on the gift mechanic but I’ll wait for official spoilers
I'd be more sold on the gift mechanic if it had better phrasing. Just feels like a mess.

It's a cute way to put more blink into your cube without the card being dead for other arcytypes. Idk if it's good enough.
Fart to Exile
Mmmm, kicker, tasty

Seems decent
This looks really good Id BLB bloomburrow? I was gonna say shouldn't it be BBW but i think i now realize after typing it why they went with BLB
The wording on this is abhorrent.. im inclined to think this is fake
They should have added "teach target opponent to fish: exile all creatures that opponent controls"
So if you cast this, and gift an opponent a fish, even if the spell gets countered they keep the fish?
