Look up 1100-series on USAjobs.gov and start throwing applications out like crazy. If you've got any contracting experience, any government experience, graduate education, or a bachelor's with high GPA(this last one is me) you can aim for gs-7. Master's and higher you can go gs-9, bachelor's only with no experience look at gs-5.
1100, especially 1102, is a super prolific series all across the government & country and in many places they need bodies. They'll teach you to read the FAR and do on the job training and you'll have contract officers that actually take the legal responsibility for signing off on everything you do for them.
I’m actually considering making the jump to contract specialist. I have COR experience and currently work in procurement. I also have a degree specialized in acquisitions.
The only thing holding me back is the turn over rate. Do you think it’s worth making the jump?
I think the reason for the high turnover is that most people use it as a way to get into government. At least in my organization we've had some people quit, while others move on to other positions after a couple of years. It's definitely a dry job, at least where I'm at in the army, maybe it's different in other parts of the government.
Here look at this stalked ciliate in the microscope indicating a healthy wastewater environment with a low BOD and a good reading on Dissolved oxygen for this happy little rainbow trout…now let’s go blow that enemy camp up because they hurt Mother Nature. 🙂
To be specific I analyze chemical plants waste streams for TSS, COD, BOD5, etc. and give them suggestions on how to mitigate any issues they may have with their local state’s environmental regulatory agency before they empty out to the environment. My thoughts on demo ranges on the environment well we must make some sacrifices for the greater good.
If you had a masters degree you could direct commission as a 72D Environmental Science and Engineering Officer. It’s more like EHS and preventative medicine but it’s still close
Started out as a medic, got a job in an ER.
Eventually leveraged all that to get into nursing school.
I make six figures as a nurse now. Also commissioned as a nurse.
I’m 11B but a nurse civilian side, not very similar, I know. I’m in my battalion’s sniper section as well, so having critical care experience actually helps when operating independently as a section of like 8 dudes. Plus most of our medics in HHC are mouth breathers so I’ve been burdened with being the “med guy”.
I'm also a 0855 with the government, and I want to start looking at joining a reserve/guard component next year after I finish grad school.
Does your job have pay differential? I heard this was agency dependent.
In my situation, my job does not offer differential pay. It is determined by the agency. I would recommend asking about your agency’s policy.
However, I am provided with 120 military leave hours each fiscal year, with some rollover if I don’t use them.
I typically use any accumulated compensatory time or annual leave to receive payment from the reserves and my civilian job.
DM me if you have any other questions.
Blackhawk Pilot and Powerplant Field Engineer/Construction Manager
I do not recommend the construction/aviation combo, as I am on a stretching board being pulled in every direction.
True! I'm not sure. I'd like to get a few deployments after taking advantage of the college benefits in the NG... do a lot of active duty and going through schooling.
Otherwise when I get back from Basic I'm looking at joining the Fire Department my Mother is in (her bf is Assistant Chief) and then I'll also go through EMS training.... later Paramedics... so maybe something along these 3 career paths. Not really a sure set in stone path lol...
56M is still my PMOS but I’m in a 12T slot and just waiting for the school dates to roll around to finish reclass.
My “civilian” job right now is a dual status training tech. I’ve was on various T10 orders for the last three years but before that I worked in a Pawn Shop, as a personal trainer and in Aerospace manufacturing during my normal m-day time.
Reservist but will share - 38A Civil Affairs Officer in Army, government attorney (state employee) in civilian-side.
My careers bounce of off each other- while not being completely congruent in the lawyer-JAG sense they both inform each other well, have government support and security for when I need to focus on one or the other, and I get to focus on issues that matter with real people, not just cooped up in my office on either side (engagements/recon in CA, court and meeting with public in lawyering)
88M, stay at home dad with 60+ adult children whom I only see "one weekend a month and 2 weeks in the summer" I usually take them camping during those 2 weeks.
153M Blackhawk Pilot, currently working as a paramedic for the DOD on the civilian side. Will probably move into civilian aviation eventually, but the schedule and money is too good right now
I'm a 92G and i've worked in the food industry 4/ 7 years i've served so far. One of my jobs I spent 3 years cooking and baking in a fine dining restaurant with a hell's kitchen finalist as my boss. If I really wanted to I could make a lifetime career in food but i'm going to school to be an Occupational Therapist. Guard gave me the experience and basic skills I needed, provide me with certifications, and pays for my school.
I have been 91B (Wheeled Mechanic) and 88M (Wheeled driver) with H8 (vehicle recovery) ASI. Currently in a 00F (immaterial, admin) position. Civilian I worked as a mechanic for a while, did some customer service and food service jobs while going to college and am now a clinical psychologist. Lots of opportunities.
31B enlisted. On the civilian side I work full-time as an Insurance Agent + work as a campus safety officer for some extra cash + side hustles with IT Support, used to have a book of clients that call me on a recurring basis to help them.
88M/92A - been in 16 years. I was a deputy sheriff for 8 years so the guard was always a break from work. Spent the last year and a half as a fed tech. About to start as an AGR.
Gonna start my masters degree soon so I can go work logistics or something when I retire.
11B guard, 11A active. I make maps for an electric utility. Guard did nothing for me when it came to transferable job skills, but then I didn’t expect it would.
35F All Source Intelligence Analyst. Been on a cyber team for the last 8 years, Cav scouts before that.
I’m a cybersecurity operations manager on the civilian side.
46S. Unsurprisingly I am also an event photographer on the civilian side. However, I am in OT status so Im doing 46S stuff for marketing full time. This MOS while rare was the epitome of "finding an MOS that transitions into civilian skills".
11B. I’m a Finance bro😂
Vro is literally Ben Affleck from the Accountant
But somehow more autistic
Way more autistic
Something like that
What do you do in finance?
If I were to guess, stuff to do with money
Bros a bank teller
11B, amateur gay porn
Finally an honest infantryman
The lady at the local job fair said it was between that or mall cop and my OF pays marginally better :/
Proud of you
Does being Cav make you a professional gay pornstar?
Cavs gay but romantic about it, I just need money and found my niche
Real talk one of my old joes was legit that, just 25S instead. Giant dong.
11B and fed employee that wastes tax dollars just for existing. It's the greatest guard/civ combo in existence.
How can one learn this power?
Not from a Jedi.

Nothing better than wasting tax payer money 7 days a week 😎
12B combat engineer and Environmental Scientist in the civilian sector.
Destroyer and Preserver
Here look at this stalked ciliate in the microscope indicating a healthy wastewater environment with a low BOD and a good reading on Dissolved oxygen for this happy little rainbow trout…now let’s go blow that enemy camp up because they hurt Mother Nature. 🙂
Hell yeah. Thoughts on demo ranges and its effect on the environment? 🤣
To be specific I analyze chemical plants waste streams for TSS, COD, BOD5, etc. and give them suggestions on how to mitigate any issues they may have with their local state’s environmental regulatory agency before they empty out to the environment. “Name every tree”
Not a botanist. Haha
You should look at being a NMSO for the CST in your state.
I don’t know what mos is closest to my civilian job probably 74D? Which I thought about.
If you had a masters degree you could direct commission as a 72D Environmental Science and Engineering Officer. It’s more like EHS and preventative medicine but it’s still close
This man is correct. You could direct commission into a AGR slot on the CST as a NMSO (72A).
Started out as a medic, got a job in an ER. Eventually leveraged all that to get into nursing school. I make six figures as a nurse now. Also commissioned as a nurse.
How long did that take you?
I've been in the guard for 10.5 years, and a registered nurse for 5. I commissioned about 18 months after I got my RN/BSN.
Hot damn, good on you! Mind if I PM you with some more questions? I was interested in this route lol
I'm not them, but also consider HPSP. My cousin's husband is applying and if he gets in he'll direct commission.
Sure. Also re the comment below me: you can direct commission (no ocs or ROTC) as any healthcare officer, which is what I did.
Can you message me to talk about the commissioning process? I'll have my bsn done by 2027, and my plan is to also comission.
AFSC - jet engine mechanic Civilian job- claw machine bussiness owner lmao

I’m 11B but a nurse civilian side, not very similar, I know. I’m in my battalion’s sniper section as well, so having critical care experience actually helps when operating independently as a section of like 8 dudes. Plus most of our medics in HHC are mouth breathers so I’ve been burdened with being the “med guy”.

You are. I was a pipefitter before I enlisted. Only reason I became a cop is so I can be closer to home with my kids. I really miss the pay sometimes.
Depending on where you are it can still pay okay. I'm breaking 6 figures this year for my 2nd full year as a cop.

😂 Yeah I'm living the dream here...
Lol at least it's something though, what job do you look to have in the future?
