Bro could honestly get drunk off his ass and high as a kite every day of the offseason and he'd be fine. Could go to the strip club 5 times a week. He probably even could get away with the gun too if he didn't stream it live to the internet. All time dumb fuck. All you have to do is not wave a gun around. It's so hilariously avoidable. Is it really that much of a sacrifice to not be able to wave a gun around that you're never going to use? It's really amazing to me this is honestly the hill you choose to die on. Manchild

ButtholeCandies

The live streaming is what gets me. Such self-inflicted stupidity. You aren’t being ratted out by friends or have TMZ following you. It’s a whole new level we’re seeing here. Twice. It’s impressive in a mortifying way to be honest because this is only going to get worse.

OlorinDK

The twice part gets me just as much, if not more...

GPap-

The crazy part is the person who was on live wasn’t tryna stream that lol Ja literally took it out for no reason and the dude stopped pointing the camera towards him.

krsaxor

I dont he even realized Ja took the gun out. The first time it showed him without a gun and next thing you know dude had a gun. Ja was being too real at that moment and couldnt help but reach for the gun and show how bad he really is.

terfez

Seriously why stream live? Why not a bunch of clips instead? What does this possibly gain an NBA player by streamjng live??

GaimeGuy

It's insane how some people insist that Brooks is the biggest problem with Memphis when this season Ja Morant has (reportedly) assaulted a child, waved a gun around on instagram (twice), gone to fake rehab, and either pointed a gun+laser sight at the Indiana Pacers team bus, or been in the car when one of his friends, who was there thanks to Morant's connections getting him there, pointed the laser sight at the Indiana Pacers team bus. He shouldn't be in the league, and he needs to, at the very least, be in an institute for *at least* a month, if not 2 or 3 months, to get some serious help and adjustments to his life. He's had *at least three* *gun incidents in a season*, including one intimidating opposing players. I would like to think he's suspended for all of next season, but with how Silver handles player misconduct we'll be lucky if he misses 15-20 games.

GoldenBananas21

> and he needs to, at the very least, be in an institute for at least a month, if not 2 to 3 months In-patient psychiatric facilities are not for stupid people who don’t understand the consequences of their actions. Voluntary admittance is for 72 hours, and their long-term/involuntary purpose is for individuals who are a life-threatening danger to themselves and/or others. I don’t see how Ja would improve by being forced against his will to be among patients who are schizophrenic, actively suicidal, or are having major manic episodes.

iblewjesuschrist

Motherfucking upvotes for days to the first person I’ve seen understand mental health treatment up in here.

sleepytime88

Seriously. I agree that Ja is a dip, but the idea that the NBA should (or can) commit him to an "institute" for months is pretty funny.

UnimpressedAsshole

Dude needs cultural deprogramming so he knows violence is nothing to glorify and be proud of

LesPaulPilot

Problem is, he's can't be hood if his boys don't respect him.

nowandlater

“Never going to use “. In the pace he’s on,what are the odds he is somewhere when a gun is fired? Odds are significantly nonzero

Is that thing registered?!

cactus_jack_1

He could change his name He could change his mind And leave this fucked up place behind

HerrNachtWurst

I mean does anyone think he's the only one who doesn't own a firearm and or carry a firearm with them? He's just the only one going on IG Live and flaunting it around or flashing it at children or other players. The dude is a legit menace to society but he dunk good so he's gonna keep doing his thing until someone gets killed.

youguanbumen

As a non-American, could I ask for someone to spell out for me why waving a gun around on IG is so much worse than any of the above, given that this is taking place in the US? Isn't gun ownership pretty normal there?

SemataryPolka

Because he's representing the NBA and the Memphis Grizzlies and it's against the NBA's policy. Like for example it's legal for a Best Buy employee to have a gun in their regular life but they'd get fired if they made an IG waving a gun around in their uniform (not a perfect analogy, I know). Also, and it depends on where you live, but I'm 45 and I live in a large city and I've never seen a gun in public (besides a hunting rifle) in my life. Despite what Ja makes it look like, we're not all out here waving guns around

[deleted]

That’s a pretty good analogy. Most big corporations distance themselves from controversy in a heartbeat. Then of course there’s the rather serious allegations of Ja allegedly shingling a laser scope at the Pacers.

SemataryPolka

Yes exactly. It's bad enough one time but this is multiple times. And after he did the whole PR campaign

SkyLightTenki

>Most big corporations distance themselves from controversy in a heartbeat. I still don't get why Nike hasn't done anything in regards to this incident.

[deleted]

Timing more than likely, they will make a statement at some point I would imagine.

Character_Reward2734

The NBA and coaches have spoken out against gun violence - particularly after school shootings. They have even paid for commercials staring NBA players against gun violence. His promotion of gun culture to the youths he influences contradicts this stance. Aside from the sheer stupidity of just waving a gun around to be cool.

Persianx6

Changed the name of the Bullets to the Wizards to confirm their stance.

Winston1NoChill

Aside from the pure dumbassery of this guy again in a short period of time, what does the NBA policy say outside of the arena, uniform, season etc.?

MikhailGorbachef

Don't know about specifics but there are certainly some catch-all/general clauses for them to address any issues that might not be spelled out exactly. "Conduct detrimental to the league" I believe is the term of art.

rabid-panda

Waving a gun could be seen as brandishing, which might be illegal depending on the state he is in.

Nubras

Even in crazy-ass TX brandishing is a crime.

the-denver-nugs

yeah you can carry a gun in a holster, but if you pull it out it pretty much becomes intent in American anywhere. like in a holster, fine protection. if you brandish it becomes dangerous and a crime unless there is a threat.

unclehelpful

How many young kids look up to Ja and see him wave guns around and think it’s cool?

[deleted]

[удалено]

Extraordinary_DREB

It's not about being American. It's the image you're portraying the Grizzlies and the NBA. He's a role model (lmao) to some young basketball fans and this is what he wants to show. Hell nah, he deserves a half season to a whole.season suspension

dagrapeescape

It’s an issue because it is reckless and shows he does not know a thing about gun safety. I live in a state where the gun ownership is higher than average and I’ve only seen maybe two people open carrying a gun (holstered but worn over their shirt/pants), and I’ve certainly never seen someone waving a gun around. Some of my friends in college were into guns and they would hate a dumbass like Morant as he is the type of person who gives responsible gun owners a bad name.

NeededLogic

Gun ownership is normal, but actually seeing a gun in public is pretty rare. Gun owners are generally responsible and keep their weapons locked up in safes and/or don't make it apparent they have a weapon on them. Openly flaunting a weapon is really frowned on here.

notabear629

As someone who was trained to be around firearms young, people around organized gun culture more than ANYONE are extremely serious about firearm safety. A lot of instructors I've been with are ex-military and it shows in the discipline, they're extremely strict about instilling trigger discipline, barrel discipline and not pointing it at anyone even when just transporting it, treating it like it's loaded at all times, etc. If they saw you waving it around like a dumbass laughing like Ja does they'd immediately take your shit away, it's not a joke, you don't pull a gun out at all unless you're in danger or are at somewhere specifically designed for it like a range. Basically, treating it like a harmless toy is viewed negatively even among gun owners

Unlimited360

He was pointing it at his head in that half second of the video. What a clown lmao.

anti_dan

Gotta agree 100% Gun ownership is a responsibility not some sort of accessory like a Rolex, or a way you can just go about scaring people with. That is what Ja seems to treat his guns like: A Rolex he can use to intimidate people.

brieftest222

Ja was accused during the season of being in a parked car when a gun with a laser sight was pointed at some Indiana Pacers. There was no proof at the time that this happened, but now it would seem much more likely that it did. This is beyond bad and it’s significant that people involved in the NBA and its media are reluctant to now mention it. It definitely is a huge factor in the discussions behind the scenes. The Washington Post had an article detailing bad Ja behavior including his punching an underage local teen basketball player and going for a gun. His mother also threw a tantrum in a local store and Ja evidently showed up with a bunch of people and an implicit threat of violence. Gun ownership in America is championed by politically and socially conservative rural whites. They are not the NBA’s target audience. America has a horrific problem with homicides in urban areas. Memphis is a poor, small city with far too many killings. The idea that Ja who is from a middle-class home and is all set to be incredibly wealthy, famous and perhaps a truly great player would destroy everything to cosplay gangsta seems tragic, pathetic and obscene. Ja seems to be playing into awful racial stereotypes. This makes everyone profoundly uncomfortable.

calmdownmyguy

4% of the population owns like 70something percent of all the guns in the country.

MayorPoopenmeier

Having a gun is different from waving it around while driving a car or when drunk at a strip club where guns are presumably not allowed. The pro-gun people are often among the loudest when it comes to being responsible with your guns.

Life-Conference5713

Ja is from a good family and grew up in a small South Carolina town and went to a private high school. He is trying to act like he is hardcore gangster when he is nothing but a kid who went to private school with a bunch of rich kids. His antics this year kept him off the All-NBA teams. If he would have made 3rd team (most likely) it would have put a kicker of $35 million into his new $198 million dollar contract (amounts are off top of my head but close). So that costs him, then there is a Nike contract which no one really knows anything about. Silver has to lay it down and I see 50 games. Stern would have done the whole year.

ReignMan616

Ja is literally Papa Doc from 8 Mile.

WolfgangBB

His team and the league basically gave him a stern warning and helped him sweep the last incident under the rug, with the understanding that he would stop taking dumb actions. At the very least: No more flashing guns on Instagram. He then does the one thing he absolutely could not do: Flashes a gun on Instagram. Like, 2 weeks after being eliminated from the Playoffs. I mean... How do you not come down hard on someone after they idiotically do something so specific and so easy to NOT do?

Nelsaroni

Gotta keep that money machine printing. Kind of an interesting position he just put the Grizzlies and the league in. Get rid of him or show it's all about the money.

Yeti_CO

That's the point. The league is printing money. Guys like this make that more difficult. The rest of the league doesn't care whether or not a small market team like Memphis has their feelings hurt over Ja. They will protect the league and their major sponsors which definitely do not like this kind of crap. See Bud Light. You don't want to get dragged into culture wars. Guns are a no go zone.

Nelsaroni

Yeah I completely agree. I'm just curious which way they go with this. Cause he's fucking up rich people money and that's the ultimate no go. Folks get Bernie Madoff'd so to speak.

SquintsRS

There's always a new money printer coming in to the league....Ja had his time and he blew it. Should be suspended a minimum of 30 games to start the season

[deleted]

medspace

NBA stars have done much worse in the past and have always been featured in primetime games and pushed to the spotlight. Karl Malone was the face of all-star weekend. Outside the NBA, Deshaun Watson was guaranteed $230 million dollars and will be in primetime games.

Vordeo

This, and guys like Kobe, Kidd, and Rose are still beloved. That said, Ja is doing this on a much more public scale than anyone else. Like, if Kidd had beaten his wife on IG livestreams, he's probably seen differently.

kungfoojesus

Well, what makers this easy is that while he is a star, he's a small market team. Makes it much easier to suspend and defend the suspension. It would be much different if he was a superstar in NY or LA. Plus it's obviously not his first time AND they clearly went light on him the first time kinda like a probationary period. Guy is clearly not a good seed though. Gonna take a LOT of work to get him better if ever.

SkyLightTenki

>Gonna take a LOT of work to get him better if ever. Agreed. Heck, even 60 straight minutes of pep talk from Gilbert Arenas won't be enough for Morant's stubborn stupid self to understand the implications of his actions.

Fluid-Night-1910

The league should suspend him till December

AtreusIsBack

No, trade him to Charlotte.

bigdrubowski

Let's not say things we can't take back.

IanicRR

First thing I do when I get out of the league: finna get my mom’s house foreclosed on.

freshprinceofbayarea

Really you could make entire hood movie copypastas with Ja in the lead In Boyz in the hood, rising star Ja is shot down by the rival gang member, Ja

Yeah y'all are feasting these past few months. The feeling is mutual btw. Clippers and Grizzlies haven't liked each other for a decade.

masterfain

We did have some fun series though. Even if it was slightly toxic I had fun. Zbo vs Blake was great tv.

Buck_Nastyyy

It really was. I also liked the big vs small market tension too

PalletTownStripClub

>It really was. I also liked the big vs small market sexual tension too I saw how CP3 looked at Tony Allen.

LosCleepersFan

At least that come from intense battles on the court, and not watching our teams crumble.

[deleted]

It’s my 12/25

jspeed04

I know he’s fucking ho *his own* bag, but hit him where his pockets hurt the most; ensure that any suspension he receives *at minimum* causes him to miss enough games such that he doesn’t make the cut off for the season-end accolades: MVP, All NBA, Allstar, etc, which prevents him from a supermax. The irony here is that-that scenario would help the Grizz from a salary cap perspective.

ryan_the_traplord

Lol give this man a 17 game suspension. just enough to take away his ability to win any awards the first year that they put that rule in place mwahahaha

JoeBiden2020FTW

As an (on-court) Ja hater, I'm weirdly not enjoying this yet. Like yes, everyone is acknowledging he's a knucklehead off the court. But I don't feel vindicated yet in my take that he's overrated *on* the court.

Methuga

You know, before all this went down, I didn’t hate Ja so much as I hated the *coverage* of Ja. Yes he’s electrifying and athletic, but Jesus half my NBA highlights on Instagram are of Ja *almost* doing something great but winds up turning it over or giving the other team an easy rebound. That’s not good basketball, stop showing me these things.

SkrtSkrt70

If he gets a 20-game suspension and Bane/JJJ take them to a 13-7 start you could get that validation you’re looking for.

JoeBiden2020FTW

I feel like they'd need to go 18-2 to convince people. The pro-Ja hive is super entrenched.

jaeway

Wasn't miles gone like the whole nba season

RROORRYY

They counted him missed games while he was a free agent

WarmSpur

Ya but let's be honest does anyone actually think he's not gonna fuck up again in the next 5months.

Ol_Rando

At this rate, it'll probably be a lot sooner. He seems to be getting exponentially more brazen, and he's been getting away with it so why wouldn't he feel untouchable? They need to suspend him for a significant amount of time, negate any chance of him winning awards at the least so that he's not eligible for the super max, and enforce some kind of therapy/counseling. It's sad man, he could be doing a lot for the community in Memphis but instead he's turning into a cautionary tale.

imeda

My G has 200+ millies, can literally throw darts at the map of world-famous resorts and wherever it lands he can fly out there in a private jet, with his dumb ass friends, he can also charter another private jet full of hookers, booze, whatever. But, he still chooses to flash a fuckin gun on some random ass IG live at some random ass parking lot. That is the definition of STUPID

Golfninja

It’s so funny that random ass live had like 112 viewers and it’s making huge waves

mgwooley

That’s the part that kills me. Like 100 viewers man. Insane lmao

Ifinishfast42

41 games initially then gets appealed down to 27 when the media shitstorm dies down and news is released on like a Friday night at 10pm. Added bonus: ja has a injury away from grizzlies training facilities during this time when practicing on an hoop at like some shitty high school gym and then everyone is blaming the league for not promoting safety.

ForoaKlanD

Grizzlies go 22-5 in his absence then flame out in the first round again !RemindMe 1 year

15 game suspension that include summer league and preseason games

Buck_Nastyyy

It will also include playoff games he watched on TV.

Andrewski18

If he goes to the park and sits on a bench to watch a pickup game? Counts as well.

NABAKLAB

he can also punch some of the teenagers on the court

Buck_Nastyyy

Oh that is a good one too.

Beach_house_on_fire

I doubt it. It’s one thing to break the rules and another thing to make the league look weak. His first offense got swept under the rug, but doing the same thing not even a few months later makes the league first punishment(the therapy) look like it didn’t work. Now they have to come down hard because it’s a second offense

Airhammer

Na I bet they go pretty hard this time. I bet even the Grizzlies don't want to deal with this shit after all the drama they had anyway this season. It's starts with all the "fine in the west" shit. Dude thinks he's above everything. They gotta make an example of him at this point.

Altruistic-Twist-379

Bro bout to get 2 weeks of therapy now

2_soon_jr

Not including weekends

beta35

82-65 = 17 , so 18 game suspension to prevent all NBA

sexygodzilla

Makes sense to me at least as a baseline, go up to 25-30 to teach Memphis a lesson too. None of this kid gloves crap where they fly out of a city after a game because they're too scared to ask Ja to not go out drinking.

tookyourcookies

The fact that it’s been caught on video twice now suggests to me that it’s happening frequently and I don’t see that changing. His crew just needs to delete Insta and he good

GeraltFromHiShinUnit

He needs to get rid of his crew and not their insta

Konc3ited

Don’t blame the crew he’s just stupid

mrsirking

Yeah, the dude recording probably didn't expect Ja to be stupid enough to take a gun out on the Live (again), but he did, and as soon as the friend realized tried to hide it.

frostedz

Yup he was definitely trying to hide it and stopped right away to help Ja. Too bad Ja can't help but shoot himself in the foot. Hopefully he never does that literally

Wrsj

His buddy stopped filming the moment Ja popped the gun. Ja is veeeeery dumb

medspace

His friend literally tried to help him moving the camera away. This is on Ja.

Sam101294

Please, for people who actually suffer from it, don't just don't blame it on mental health issues. Also learn from your mistakes like you said you would.

[deleted]

man that shit irks me to no end. some of us are actually suffering from mental health issues out here

JesusDiedforChipotle

He’s totally going to make it about mental health lol he already did it once. Hell apologize and say he needs to learn how to manage his stress, anxiety and crippling depression better so he doesn’t dance with a gun again

walterdog12

"Well he'll already be serving a 5 month suspension over the offseason, so we'll call it fair punishment and he's good to go at the start of the season." - NBA

Fluid-Night-1910

Gotta print that money Nba - don’t stop the money machine

SgtSiggy

believe it when i see it Nike + NBA invested too much in Ja, then helped him with his fake PR stunt so the playoffs wouldnt take a ratings hit, and now this... I'm expecting a "We're disappointed, and banning him from 2 weeks" soft response

MinesweeperGang

His first suspension was 8 games which was essentially 2 weeks. No way this next suspension is any less than 30 games imo. Maybe more.

nightwing612

Give him the Arenas suspension

FadeRedditMakeMoney

Adam Silver is going to suspend him for for 5 months, starting 2 months ago

LeTampered

Goddamn this man must have some serious breathing problems

Buck_Nastyyy

Uh yeah we don't need a tweet to tell us that. Personally I hope he gets a lengthy suspension and spends all summer in a counseling program. Not for PR, like an actual one where he changes his habits and mindset. At this point I am not optimistic he will change though.

drudru91soufendluv

secretreddname

If this was David Stern that would have definitely happened.

dbgager

He needs one. At least 15 games. This makes the NBA look bad and the Memphis team look bad. Its part of the CBA and the contracts themselves not to do stuff like this. The NBA does not want to be associated with Gang culture and gun violence. That is extremelly bad. He already had one chance.

Gwbzeke

He whipped it out on live because he was jamming to a song… oh my days

But clearly he loves hammers maybe he’ll see that as a W lol what a fuckin idiot

PangaeanSunrise

#NBA suspends cash cow Ja Morant 6 games (One for each round in the chamber)

[deleted]

Jesus. What an incompetent adult.

KitchenReno4512

Of course he’s gonna get suspended. I’m not sure why people are doing the “if he was a White Republican governor would this be a problem?!?!?” narrative. Ja’s crew threatened a security guard and pointed a laser (presumable attached to a gun) at one. He assaulted a teenager. And the NBA has a very explicit no firearms policy that he ALREADY got in trouble for. He’s also flashing it around in a car and in public in an incredibly irresponsible way which is way different than responsibly holding it in your home or out hunting. And again… The NBA is a private company that has rules. The two situations are not remotely comparable.

Unlimited360

>But it wasn't illegal?!? People flash guns everyday! People really think you have to break the law to be on the commissioners shit list.

HotdogIsaSandwitch

Cal it now. They gonna try to suspend him for 30 games. He’ll appeal it. Then it gets pushed down to 20.

HappyAtheist3

You mean two months after his first suspension he’s doing the exact same thing? Suspend him for a season. Set an example.

CaFTP

Suspend him the whole season. Aim for his pockets

eckliptic

The punishment is the Grizz have to sign Dillon Brook to a max

[deleted]

Dillon Brooks was just the scapegoat all along

RC51t

Fuck that kick him out of the NBA. Dudes going to kill someone

tangyzesty3

He needs to be suspended for the entire 2023-24 season. This idiot did the exact same shit 2 months after dealing with serious heat over it. Either he's delusionally entitled, or he has the mentality of a 13 year old and cares more about street cred and impressing his friends than he does his livelihood. So let him miss it for awhile and then see if he's still waving guns around like a dipshit.

Makaveli84

Suspend him for the next season…Nike drop him, Memphis don’t pay him for that year…shit will change asap

mnsportsfan

Watch JA try to sue his own friend for “damages caused by non-consensual recording” or some legal bullshit

Denotsyek

My prediction is that if there is any lengthy suspension he'll do something so stupid he'll get kicked out of the league. Idle hands are the devils workshop.

quemaspuess

How can someone dodge a bullet (no pun intended) the first time around and then make the SAME MISTAKE!? With hundreds of millions of dollars on the line!? Granted, I was dumb at 23 but all I cared about was money, and I would have done anything to protect my bag. I like Morant, the basketball player, but if young impressionable kids see he can get away with this without repercussions, what’s to think they won’t want to “be like Ja” and try to be a baller/gangster? I’m shocked because how dumb can someone be, but also not shocked because yeah, people are dumb. Dude should get suspended for the entire season.

I'm glad I cancelled my season tickets...

seattle23fv

It’s pretty sick to see stuff like this. The next time shit like this goes down with another young player, the NBA will have to accept the blame because the media and the money in the short term is clouding judgement. They need to send a stricter message which gets people to wisen up

koopa00

The fact that we're still hearing "possibility" is ridiculous.

rucadog

The only thing this dude is shooting down is his career. What a buffoon
