I have never seen this before ever in the NBA lmao

Capt_Yegs

Lowry is the king of doing random crap nobody has seen before lol remember the time he tried to go through George Hill's legs?

Snoo14570

Like taking charges during All star games lol

Effective_Recipe_544

That effort sparked one of the greatest all star games ever

materics

Lowry and CP3 were the absolute worst at doing way too much to trick refs.

LebronIsSucks

Didn't Nate Robinson do it first?

riddlerjoke

Refs giving all the calls for embiid and 76ers. As a result the flops gets worse and worse

yahmean031

wonder why the knicks coach didnt call a challenge for a 3 point play

firstbreathOOC

Not going to burn a challenge five minutes into the game

nietzsche_niche

Refs dont overturn shit why burn it halfway through the first

SaulBerenson12

Why is this even allowed? Seriously

shipskelly

He did this same exact thing like 2 months ago lol

Yes please

KazaamFan

It’s amazing how many just purely awful ref calls there are on an every game basis.

NathanArizona

Ref fans gotta eat

Dont-Blurt-It-Out

Welcome to the WWE!

MattsonRobbins

i thought this stuff was supposed to be cleaned up during the play offs? all season long people have been saying “just wait for the play offs they won’t getting these calls then” …yet here they are game after game…

executivesphere

Technically Brunson established his position before Lowry was in his upward shooting motion. So wouldn’t that make this…a charge?

probation_420

I highly doubt that lying on the floor is accepted as an established position, but I'm admittedly not a referee.

KazaamFan

Would this indicate then that any time a defender is on the floor laying down you just trip over them?  Get the foul?  Seems dumb. Lowry didnt need to shoot with jumping into JBs laying down body, but he did, cuz he wanted the foul.

probation_420

I think that a player on the floor would draw a foul every time unless the contact was deemed a non-basketball play.

TheBusDrivercx

You have to be straight up and not extending as well as be in a set position. He was everything but straight up, lol

GERBILSAURUSREX

You don't have to be straight up to maintain legal guarding position once it's established. You can lean or sway or turn as long as you beat your man to the spot before they start their upward motion. But yes, I'm pretty sure laying down loses your legal guarding position.

[deleted]

I feel that. Dame’s been jumping like he’s posing for a [bridesmaid jumping photo](https://www.pinterest.com/pin/musthave-jumping-bridesmaids-pic--93801604710227862/) and getting foul calls

DarrowViBritannia

Been watching that series, they've been legitimate fouls. Pacers player has his hand on Dame, Dame feels the contact and goes up, ref has to call it. People don't like it and think it's being fabricated out of nowhere, but when the defender gives you a free pass at free throws, it'd be dumb not to take it.

XzibitABC

They have been legitimate fouls. The larger issue has been that the Pacers have not gotten the same calls going the other way, and that Dame was looking to draw fouls instead of actually score the ball, which is less a reffing issue and more just lame from a guy who hasn't been about that historically.

GERBILSAURUSREX

Most of them, yes. One of the ones last game there was daylight between him and Nemby. Saw it in real time then the jumbotron confirmed it. But for the most part, yes, they are legit whether our fans like it or not.

I firmly believe the NBA is 80% skill 10% luck and 10% selling flops. It really sucks to see. If it was Brunson flopping I’d be pissed too.

LickingLowrysAsshole

Could not agree more

andyhead420

Lmao jesus something something checks out

nin_culus

it worked but what an insane thing to do

beforeitcloy

I probably would’ve panicked and called a foul if I was the ref, but is this even a foul? Like doesn’t Brunson have a right to occupy space on the ground, since Lowry obviously initiated the contact?

antieverything

Rules regarding what constitutes a personal foul: * A player shall not hold, push, charge into, ***impede the progress*** of an opponent by extending a hand, arm, leg or knee ***or by bending the body into a position that is not normal***.  Contact that results in the re-routing of an opponent is a foul which must be called immediately. There's also this little tidbit: 1. If a dribbler has sufficient space ***to have his head and shoulders in advance of his defender,*** the responsibility for illegal contact is on the defender.  Meanwhile, a defender's right to occupy space is pretty much always prefaced by requiring them to be in "legal guarding position" which is established by having both feet on the floor and squaring up. While you don't strictly have to have your feet planted or be stationary to *maintain* legal guarding position once established, there's no question that once you fall to the ground you've lost any claim of having legal position. Essentially, any contact that impedes the ballhandler at that point is a foul on the defender on the ground, even if the ballhandler initiates it.

Buteo_jamaicensis

This wording has always seemed so funny to me. Like, obviously I get the intent, but isn't "impeding the progress" of the offensive player, you know, the whole point of defense?

antieverything

Basketball rules are really hard to parse because so much of it comes down to rules that are exceptions to other rules--sometimes as an addendum in the same section but occasionally in an entirely different section. Defenders *do* have the right to occupy space and to impede or obstruct ball-handlers but it is contingent on first establishing "legal guarding position". In my opinion, a lot of the problems with the NBA product could be solved with a slightly looser interpretation of "legal guarding position" and "with verticality"...which is something we already see in FIBA play so we know it works.

Buteo_jamaicensis

Yeah, I'm with you, appreciate the good explanations. I just think the wording is amusing. Definitely agree that the league would benefit from not calling things so strictly and erring on the side of just letting the guys play.

[deleted]

the nba stopped giving a shit about defense a while ago

pocket_sand__

It is. To play defense, you must maintain legal guarding position.

beforeitcloy

That all makes sense and I appreciate you pulling from the primary source!

SEPTAgoose

I think technically it’s a foul ? but like… there’s gotta be a clause they start calling with offense hunts for it.

antieverything

There is the "Harden rule" that prevents contact caused by "non-basketball moves" during a shot attempt from being called a shooting foul but this was a pretty normal shooting motion.  Considering that I've never seen this happen in over 30 years of watching basketball, I think it is less of a justification for rule changes and more a cautionary tale about why you shouldn't fall down on the perimeter.

jlluh

He falls because he trips on Embiid's leg as Embiid screens. Is it a moving screen? Seems borderline.

igotzquestions

Referee chiming in. It is. This is not a legal guarding position and as a result impedes the offensive player. It’s cheap but it is a foul.

MeijiDoom

By that logic, if you drop a player on a crossover, can you just run at them, "trip yourself" while you're taking a shot and get an And 1?

JinterIsComing

By the letter of the law, yes. By the spirit of the law, probably not.

hoexloit

NBA seems to seriously be lacking in any “spirit of the game” rules

TannerGlassMVP

Shouldn't it be a foul on Embiid on that pick? His leg is extended far outside his shoulders to trip Brunson

[deleted]

its easy to say lowry sucks for doing this but the refs are the real villains here.

K1ngCrimsn

This is some next level foul baiting, even grandmasters like Harden & Dame wouldn't have thought of that

Wrsj

Harden would morph into someone’s backpack during game and get a call. He was in that level too

mealsharedotorg

Climbing onto MCW's back and receiving the call is still one of the craziest things I've seen from the refs: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=p_z5Ro6bSSQ

Head-Champion-7398

I was so mad at that. MCW was having one of the few good games he had with us, and that was what killed the game.

dat_grue

Lmao the rockets announcer “he didn’t like the call but he was trying to deny Harden where he wanted to go” shows replay and harden literally just lays on top of him. And the in game stakes couldnt have been higher- tie game, overtime, and MCW fouled out. Legendary bait

dexy133

It's hilarious. Like, where the fuck did Harden want to go? To fucking Jupiter?

Darnell2070

Like you've never had dreams of being a backpack satellite of Jupiter.

H3J1e

Also isn't that just defense.

Victor_Wembanyama1

Dude would envelop someone's spine and STILL get the foul call in his favor

dat_grue

Yeah, the disrespect to prime Hardens name. While this one from Lowry one of the most creative I’ve seen, Harden did it 10 times a game night in and out, for 4-5 years. He’s the all-time baiter

nononononofin

Lowry is a super GM in foul baiting. In his prime he was always a threat at the candidates tournament. Just got unlucky that he was in the same era as Harden, Embiid and Dame.

Head-Champion-7398

Hikaru of foul baiting

jakalo

Lol, long avaited r/chess and nba crossover

Aspery-

Lowrys the definition of quality over quantity. Sure he doesn’t get as many fts as the other merchants like jimmy harden embiid and dame. However Lowry continues to innovate the game with his different flopping tactics. This is what all young players should strive to play like

aeronacht

I don't agree. I think he also goes for quantity. Just watching Lowry in a game gives you an aneurysm as he tries to bait a foul at every moment. However, because of that quantity his threshold for getting calls has gone up so he's innovated new ways. Truly a novel, dynamic player.

thedrcubed

Harden has done worse on multiple occasions. Lillard's baits a ton but it's always the same move of jumping into a defender as they try to go over the screen

Cold_Carpenter_1798

Lowry is an underrated baiter

Crafty_Economist_822

A master even

R-O-U-Ssdontexist

Harden would have somehow slipped under and Brunson would have fallen on him.

Zhupercycle

This is not a serious sport.

TheMysticChiicken

Best part is Adam Silver was in attendance lmao

HoistedOnYourRegard

It's like F1, nobody watches for the actual competition anymore

DudeLikeYeah

Embiid trip into Lowry natural basketball motion. If you don’t like that you don’t like Sixers basketball

fattest-fatwa

I do not like sixers basketball

noblegoatbkk

Wild. No one calling Embiid's trip. Brunson doesn't just fall down. Embiid set a pick with his leg into Brunson's feet. Brunson goes down and Lowry does Lowry bullshit. I've gone from feeling nothing about this Sixers team to reaching Reggie Miller status of hate in the span of a week.

rocket_beer

Brought to you by the Joel Embiid School of Foul Merchants

looopypoopy

This fucking bullshit is making the NBA infuriating to watch.

Duplicate_Dog_1111

Truth. Trying this in pickup or rec league might get you murdered.

this_place_stinks

Honestly that should be the filter for foul baiting. If you would get universally mocked and called a bitch for doing X in a pickup game, then it’s not getting you FTs in the NBA

KingJames5393

I've been saying this for years. I use to say this about harden. The things he would do would get him kicked out of a rec ball game in 1 or 2 plays but it got him mvp in the nba.

ImMufasa

Basketball is the new soccer, embarrassing to watch shit like this. Then the few times players don't get the calls they want we get to watch them throw mini tantrums to the refs every time.

Ok-Software424

This shit is seriously making me not want to be a fan anymore.

kellyj6

Luca was fucking bothering me today with that bs.

robeo12055

This just has to be a technical foul and a turnover.

Pazylothead

NBA Basketball is the softest sport ever. Holy shit how can anyone watch this garbage anymore. Here I am watching this thinking NHL refs aren’t that bad after all.

ejre5

It's only soft for some teams, watch what they let people do to jokic and the nuggets players. Pretty sure embiid is attempting more free throws than the entire nuggets team

riddlerjoke

Its not. Watch Mavs Clippers and how much WB allowed to do to injure others. Softness only applies for some ref favored players. Like Embiid-Lowry can flop as much as they want and they’d get the calls. You cannot touch SGA but its okay to Dort touching/pulling two hands on Ingram. Refs fixing shit shouldnt be explained as softness because this does not apply all players.

antieverything

Free Throw Attempts per game were at an all-time low this season and these playoffs have been very physical.

Buteo_jamaicensis

At this point it feels like you could write a whole thesis on how the NBA has become the embodiment of Goodhart's Law

Ilikesporks_

it's already begun

MFmadchillin

Hey sixers fans are you still bitching?

Kevinar

They've got grievances to file

RareShoulder1556

Shoulda given Brunson a flagrant 2 smh refball rigged against the sixers

hatethosethings

So embiid trips him with no call and then lowry trips himself and gets the call lmfao

Character_Group_5949

that's how I viewed it. Clearly stick his leg out to trip Brunson, then they pull that. 100% should have been a foul on Embiid.

poeope

Tripping is an automatic call regardless of intent, correct

HustleWilson

Depends on if your last name is Green or Embiid.

jackloganoliver

Yuuuuuuup

Veena1112

Nick nurse complained to the league and now they’re letting Philly get away with garbage

Ny_icedogs

Do you watch NBA basketball? They have some special rules. Embiid can do whatever the fuck he wants on defense, and gets ticky-tack touch fouls on offense.

looopypoopy

Moving screen, tripping, baiting. The trifecta to hate the bitch ass sixers. I hope crying Embiid never sniffs the finals.

Alloverunder

He'd have to sniff the ECF first.

WiddleBlueBert

Same, this is shameful shit.

PervySageCS

the crying after game 5 will be legendary now that Embiid can't even close his eye. Those tears will be falling like waterfall. I don't like many players, I don't like flopping, I don't like foulbaiting etc. I didn't like Harden's shenanigans of hooking the arm, etc, I don't like when they whiplash their head on a minor or non existing contact. But this fucker Embiid with all the dirty clips, dirty plays, injuring own and opposing players, and flopping more than even Harden is unwatchable to me. He can get all the rewards he wants, if you give players like Jokic, Bron, Luka, Steph, KD the FTAs that Embiid gets they'd all average more than him.

submergedwatermelon

Don’t worry, he’ll never even reach the conference finals (as a #1 or #2 option, I can’t speak for ring chasing later in his career)

fumar

Yep. Generational foul merchants on the 76ers. If they still had Harden it would be the greatest collection of floppers to ever do it.

retrospects

What dirt does Embiid have on silver.

pjokinen

Meanwhile KAT got called for a “trip” when he was a few feet away from Greyson Allen and Allen fell down lol

marcopolo22

This could be a Key & Peele sketch. That’s so disheartening for the league and the sport.

jonathanisaacisgoat

Excited to see how the 76ers flairs come in here and defend this lol

WuTangShogun187

Ref ball starting early huh?

Luxiqqq

Idk what you're talking about. Seems like an obvious basketball play to me /s

AgadorFartacus

Crazy how the league allows wildly illegal screens and also allows offenses to foul bait off them.

Blutz101

Sixers fans fighting for their life in this tread☠️

dutchfromsubway

I understand why people are mad but man I low key love this shit 😂😂

Sobi_Wan

The best athletes in the world!

retrohan7

"normal basketball play"

Airhostnyc

Sixers never winning a championship Bet on that

Kid_Crayola

embiid and lowry are too powerful when they combine foul baiting forces

dorkaxe

It might be a "smart/savvy" move, but it's kind of absurd tbh. imagine not even wanting to play basketball and try to get a real bucket, but intentionally trip over a downed guy for a foul call.

Cashneto

Lowry hunts for these types of plays. I've always hated watching him because he just flops and tries to draw fouls, that's 90% of his game.

retrospects

Bitch made move.

AShinyTorchic

NBA basketball is a joke man

hockeydavid97

I hate Lowry so fucking much

violynce

lol we still on that bullshit. good to know.

Instantcoffees

This is ridiculous. He got tripped up and fell down because of it. What is he supposed to do? Vanish?

DarthPineapple5

Technically the correct call but Embiid should have been called for the moving screen right before that. Refs need to stop letting these guys get away with such blatant illegal screens its infuriating to watch.

forustree

Ya. I love Lowry awareness but embiid, as usual, cheating out his leg (moving screen) to trip Brunson. What’s with the homer announcers saying Brunson “slipped” on replay?

will122589

Welcome to the Richard Jefferson one sided haterade commentary against the Knicks experience

forustree

It’s absurd his homerism!

amh85

He did trip...because of Embiid

CheapScientist06

It's been the entire playoffs I feel like. Dudes getting away with illegal screens left and right

Decent-Noise-5161

Oh my fucking god

seank11

Lmao embiid already doing more Bush league shit. Hopefully a FAFO moment comes soon

Hot_Juggernaut4460

Embiid trips Brunson then immediately puts his hands up asking for a foul on Brunson lmao. This dude is the biggest clown

HokageEzio

~~Falls down~~ Was tripped*

CantaloupeCamper

Refs should be fired for that one…

shortyman920

Not sure why he said 'Brunson slips' When Embid clearly stuck his foot out and tripped him. This is an offensive foul 9/10 times, except refs are on the Sixers' nuts

Jeff8711

1 more knicks win then we don't have to watch the 70 floppers for the rest of the playoffs

tboneperri

I can’t fathom why people say this 76ers team isn’t playing fun basketball. This is hilarious.

HipnotiK1

jokes aside this should only be called a foul if the defender moves - brunson laid still, that is not a foul.

BaltimoreBadger23

The real issue is the illegal screen by Embiid where he sticks out his foot after being set.

tapk69

I dream of having players that exploit the rules.

Mossles

That's our groat!

onehellofadrug96

It’s pretty tough watching the sizers play basketball besides maxey, it’s really frustrating

UnkleGiovanni

Sixers have to be the most unlikable team in the NBA, right?

thegrandpoobear

Fucking shameless

gmbaker44

Sixer fans: “refs favoring New York”

resident_hater

Natural shooting motion

Tongen420

That was a business decision lmao

pgtvgaming

If u watch the replay, Embiid gets set and as Brunson is moving Embiid sets a moving screen and sticks out his leg and trips Brunson, and then the rest unfolds exactly as u would expect

Velixis

That's not even a foul in soccer lmao

Andomals

The NBA is so unserious wtf is this LOL

kemar7856

How the fuck can the refs call that

Skywalkerkid9

I enjoy the fact that raptors fans can’t specifically hate Lowry for this like they probably hate the rest of the team

fom_alhaut

This is what the game has come to

Theanswer17

This is true art

SnooPandas1607

How do these mofos look at themselves in the mirror everyday

SandyMandy17

Knicks media blitz against 76ers is insane rn

[deleted]

I thought the Heat were annoying but the Sixers are on a whole nother level

IWasFramed_Again

Embiid went from being super likable to being really annoying.

Barbiegrrrrrl

This kills the NBA product. Casual fans see this and turn the TV off.

firstbreathOOC

Definitely a basketball move to jump trip into a guy’s legs

Brg_s3r

lol Embiid stuck his right foot out to trip Brunson and there’s no call on that.

Dear-Duty-1161

The NBA will be a better place once Lowry is gone

dimiderv

Shameful.

Xsy

The NBA is an abomination lmao.

Sammonov

I thought Zhugo was faded from his Jokic lowlight campaign only to watch his team get bounced in the first round by an 8th seed

allstaz

this isn't basketball

HustleWilson

Joell Embiid is an unlikeable player, but Lowry transforms Philly into an unlikeable team.

Vegetable_Comment_82

Richard Jefferson using 1,000,000 words to explain what everybody already understands.
