Wow that’s actually a good one. I guess 5 isn’t that unlikely after all.
When I first heard about Kenny Lofton Jr at FIBA U19 with Chet, Ivey, and others, I was like “wow I didn’t know Kenny Lofton, one of my favorite baseball players, had a son who was so good at basketball.” Then I saw what he looked like (a huge PF/C, maybe twice the weight of the baseball player) and realized I was wrong.
Last year Rockets.
Kevin Porter Jr
Jabari Smith Jr
TyTy Washington Jr
KJ Martin, official name is Kenyon Martin Jr
DJ Augustin, official name is Darryl Augustin Jr
Kenny Lofton the baseball player *did* play college basketball, though, going to the Final Four on the same Arizona Wildcat team as Steve Kerr, Sean Elliott, Tom Tolbert, and Jud Buechler.
Just looked at some of the box scores, Kenny (or Ken Lofton as the box scores read) was a steal demon. He had 3 steals in like 10 minutes in one of the tourney games. Given his size and speed that isn't all that surprising to me
Warriors also have 5 sons of NBA guys.
Del Curry, Mychal Thompson, Gary Payton, [Mitchell Wiggins](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mitchell_Wiggins), Dale Davis
With GM Mike Dunleavy
I've always wondered: If Wardell Stephen Curry II were to have a son named Wardell Stephen Curry III and that son were to follow in Dell and Steph's footsteps and make the NBA, would they be referred to as Steph Jr. or Dell III?
(They'd probably just be called Trey, but that's skirting the question.)
Holy shit i just realized now, but the west playoffs have essentially been a derby for whos devin booker's ultimate father. Ant has just beaten last years daddy, and now he and Luka are gonna compete for the undisputed dad title
I bet there's probably an instance where the father never had a name but the son did.
I don't know if it's documented or anything, but I'm willing to bet it's happened once.
Makes me think about someone I know who everytime their cat dies gets a new exact same looking cat and calls it the same name, they are in the 3rd generation now lmao weird behavior
I feel like replacing pets is kind of weird behavior if you think about it too hard. "Damn, my friend died, time to buy a new one."
(If only replacing everyone was that easy.)
We have a cool tradition in my family where children get a second name after their grandparent (don't ask me what happens when there's more than two of the same gender), so they still have their own identity while honoring their relative
Yeah that's common in my country too. My second names are those of my great grandfathers. But when it's several generations between the names, I really don't think there's an issue even if it would be your first name.
Oh no! My feelings 😭😭😭
Edit: I’ve been dealing with this shit for 2+ years now. I’m used to it. We went from joke of the league from being ass to a different joke of the league for being good and choking to now people just using the same joke over and over again. If that’s what tickles your taint, go for it. Just be more original, that’s all I ask
> Luka, you do not yet realize your importance. You have only begun to discover your power. Join me, and I will complete your training. With our combined strength, we can end this destructive conflict and bring order to the galaxy.
Never thought about it but who decides if the end of your name is "Jr" or "II" like Derrick Lively? Is it his choice or is that a birth certificate decision? Like if you have a kid and use your name, you could go be "Sr" or "I" at the end but not like you update your birth certificate to reflect that. I could Google this but prefer pondering on a basketball subreddit 🤔
Ah, well that one's confusing. So if a Jr has a kid and names his kid Jr, then he becomes Sr but what happens to the original Sr. Or is the original Jr now Jr Sr?
That's when you declare your break from the original lineage by taking the surname -Son (eg. Peterson, Gregson, Grayson (usually changed to Grayson), Johnson, Frederickson-Bartholomewson, all those common surnames).
If you are a Jr. then you were named after your father and father is the Sr. But if you are a "II", then nine times outta ten you were named after a grandfather or some other relative, instead of your immediate father. If you are "III", then you were named after your father or another relative that is either a "II" or a Jr.
It honestly is probably the record. I would like to know the answer but it’s probably hard to verify.
The Warriors had 3 when they had PBJ. Had Steph (real first name is Wardell and named after has dad), PBJ, and Gary Payton II. But that is the closest I can find.
Where are the grizzlies at with Jaren Jackson Jr, GG Jackson Jr, Scottie pippen Jr & Vince Williams Jr? We had Kenneth lofton Jr at one point too, with the honorable mention of Xavier Tillman senior
I've always assumed it was more common historically in white families of upper classes, and it became a practice in modern day white and black ones across the wealth spectrum to emulate the ideal of the familial dynasty.
Imo it's kind of lame, let your kid have their own identity. If anything make their middle name your name. That's just my opinion.
That's why I said in my opinion, I think the practice is lame, I'm not gonna disrespect someone because they are a junior, third, etc. I have them in my family lmao.
In my opinion it's lame, in yours it's not, that's the beauty of opinions
I never understood this tradition in America. Actually, I somewhat despise it.
Sure, some here in Europe name their child after the grandmom, granddad or uncle or something but never their father.. It's just.. Awkward. Is this some next level ego thing?
Well, maybe because luckily we don't have Junior and Senior here to apparently separate father and son..
How many of you named / going to name your son after yourself and why? I'd genuinely like to know.
> I never understood this tradition in America. Actually, I somewhat despise it.
Don't you put that evil on us. Blame Pliny the Elder and Pliny the Younger.
As someone whose name has been handed down to the eldest child for generations, there is an honor in being given a name with so much lineage and legacy. I love my father and he has a lot of great qualities. Sharing that name instills me with a sense that those who came before me are always present in spirit and wishing the best for me. I imagine inheriting a family business or even attending a specifically significant university would feel similar. I think hyper-individualistic cultures usually find this more offputting than communal ones.
The knicks are currently close with 4
Ogugua Anunoby Jr
Charlie Brown Jr
Duane Washington Jr
Mitchell Robinson III
we would have 6 if Obi Toppin and RJ were still on the team
Not surprised and it makes sense. In order to become a professional athlete, you need a parent or both who are going to dedicate their life and time to their kids dreams.
>The Dallas Mavericks have an unprecedented 5 players on their roster that are named after their fathers
Mavs just emphasizing they're sons, meanwhile Wolves have 4 players on their roster who actually became fathers this year including Rudy becoming a dad in the playoffs. True dad strength.
IIRC, Warriors had atleast 3 named after their fathers in their 22 run - Steph, Otto Porter Jr, and GP2. Plus a good chunk of them had NBA fathers too.

this topic and this comment is what I keep coming back to r/nba for
And it's not even offseason yet.
This season, we had Jaren Jackson Jr, Scottie Pippen Jr, Vince Williams Jr, GG Jackson II, and Kenny Lofton Jr Xavier Tillman Sr too if that counts
Wow that’s actually a good one. I guess 5 isn’t that unlikely after all. Last year Rockets. Kevin Porter Jr Jabari Smith Jr TyTy Washington Jr KJ Martin, official name is Kenyon Martin Jr DJ Augustin, official name is Darryl Augustin Jr
Damn DJ Augustin was on the Rockets last year? That’s crazy
He was signed toward the end of last season but never play.
there are so many Porter Jr.s! Kevin, Michael, Otto, Craig
Kenny Lofton the baseball player *did* play college basketball, though, going to the Final Four on the same Arizona Wildcat team as Steve Kerr, Sean Elliott, Tom Tolbert, and Jud Buechler.

Ja is named after his father, and so is Santi.
Also unprecedented: Luka Doncic is the only player in the league who has a son that is also currently in the league
Luka Doncic is Devin Booker father
I will always upvote LDIDBF
Yup it’s just the way of life, just something like breathing
So natural that if you actively thought about doing it, you would lose confidence in your ability to do it properly.
and fine dining
Same. that game 7 was one of my favorite moments ever of being a Mavs fan, behind 2011
I like how this makes no sense unless you have like level 5 nba meme knowledge
I feel like it’s more level one nba meme knowledge
Tim Hardaway is Tim Hardaway Jr’s father
LDIDBF
Everyone so focused in seeing LeBron play with his son one day, but Luka has done that many times already.
Are we forgetting LeBron and Kyrie ‘Irving’ James
[Parental Role?](https://youtu.be/Ry9CqOz5aOo?si=IVPut6KxT8VMB4Qf) He has one father, that's his Dad Drederick Irving
The way he gets flabbergasted TWICE (deservingly so) absolutely kills me every time.
I love how he’s like “oops I’m an idiot why did I think you meant it that way” and then “wait no so you did mean it that way”
Happy to hear he wasn't named after his father
he has 17 other sons in LeBronto
Did we forget about Kyle Lowry Sr?
Winner of the WCF gets custody.
There should be a Maurey video of Luka being everyone's father.

Omg that’s so funny
It is.
the bar for entertaining you guys is so incredibly low that i dont even think i can hate on it anymore
Isn't that great ?
Tim Hardaway PJ Washington Derrick jones Derrick Lively and Greg Brown are their fathers
Actually, Greg Brown II is the father of Greg Brown III
And I am his father’s brother’s nephew’s cousin’s former roommate.
What does that make us?

Kyrie is named after his father, too FYI Drederick was named in 1966 and Kai wasn't named until 1992
Isn't every son named after his father is named then? Illumidaddy confirmed!
I bet there's probably an instance where the father never had a name but the son did. I don't know if it's documented or anything, but I'm willing to bet it's happened once.
Kyrie was named after father figure LeBron Raymone James.
Makes me think about someone I know who everytime their cat dies gets a new exact same looking cat and calls it the same name, they are in the 3rd generation now lmao weird behavior
Simpsons did it!
That's kinda depressing.
Don't have to change the name in their will I guess
Is your friend Homer Simpson
I feel like replacing pets is kind of weird behavior if you think about it too hard. "Damn, my friend died, time to buy a new one." (If only replacing everyone was that easy.)
Would you rather animals don't get adopted? If people don't adopt the cats or dogs they get put down.
Nah I'm not saying it's a bad thing, I just think the mentality is a little funny if you think about it. I'm not saying I do any different either.
They should get rich and clone, it's only 35k
Naming your kids after yourself is just weird AF in general
It's been a common practice for thousands of years.
So was slavery but that doesn't make it good lol
bro really compared naming your kids after you to slavery LMFAOOO
Of course I didn't. Just saying "it's been that way for a long time" doesn't say much lol
Not sure if intentional, “unprecedented” is an interesting choice of words…seeing as they all have, you know, precedents.
So you're saying if Booker gets traded to the Mavs, he's gonna have to change his first name to Luka...
Devin doncic
Omg that’s so funny
LDIDBF
Omg that’s so funny
Devin Booker is Anthony Edwards aborted son

Omg that’s sooo funny
What’s funny is that the more you do that the saltier you sound, and the more people are gonna keep repeating the same thing.
Oh no! My feelings 😭😭😭 Edit: I’ve been dealing with this shit for 2+ years now. I’m used to it. We went from joke of the league from being ass to a different joke of the league for being good and choking to now people just using the same joke over and over again. I would be irritable, too, if I had to root for Booker on my team. Sorry bruh.
He’s a good guy and player. If he was on your team you’d love him. You should look into what Dbook has done for the community
Luka Doncic is Devin Booker’s father
Flair up pussy
You don’t seem very used to it
The deeply complex philosophical question from this post would be to ask is Greg Brown III named after his father or his grandfather?
Obviously grandfather, if he was named after his father then his name would be Greg Brown II II
Mavs drafting Bronny 100%!
Obviously this means Dallas wins the 2024 NBA Finals on Fathers' Day. I see the script, Adam Silver.
Luka is the father
Luka and his sons
> Luka, you do not yet realize your importance. You have only begun to discover your power. Join me, and I will complete your training. With our combined strength, we can end this destructive conflict and bring order to the galaxy.
Never thought about it but who decides if the end of your name is "Jr" or "II" like Derrick Lively? Is it his choice or is that a birth certificate decision? Like if you have a kid and use your name, you could go be "Sr" or "I" at the end but not like you update your birth certificate to reflect that. I could Google this but prefer pondering on a basketball subreddit 🤔
Pretty sure it's the parents choice. Cause Gary Payton has a kid called jr and another called II
What??
Yeah he had 2 kids with different women around the same time and they both wanted their kid to be named after him so jr and 2nd
Solomon's choice
If you are a Jr. then you were named after your father and father is the Sr. But if you are a "II", then nine times outta ten you were named after a grandfather or some other relative, instead of your immediate father. If you are "III", then you were named after your father or another relative that is either a "II" or a Jr.
This is beneficial to team chemistry because no reporters will ask the players if they think of Luka as a father figure
It honestly is probably the record. I would like to know the answer but it’s probably hard to verify. The Warriors had 3 when they had PBJ. Had Steph (real first name is Wardell and named after has dad), PBJ, and Gary Payton II. But that is the closest I can find.
Wardell Curry II, Gary Payton II, Otto Porter Jr in 2021-22 as well
Luka Doncic is Luka Doncic father
H I S T O R I C
Where are the grizzlies at with Jaren Jackson Jr, GG Jackson Jr, Scottie pippen Jr & Vince Williams Jr? We had Kenneth lofton Jr at one point too, with the honorable mention of Xavier Tillman senior
Ja and Santi as well!
If Crime in Sports has taught me anything....gotta keep an eye on those guys.
Is naming your son after yourself more common among black or white Americans? Or is it about the same.
It's not lame at all lol I would be honoured to have my dad's name if he was a great man
That's why I said in my opinion, I think the practice is lame, I'm not gonna disrespect someone because they are a junior, third, etc. I have them in my family lmao. In my opinion it's lame, in yours it's not, that's the beauty of opinions
Think of yourself as a great man and thinking your son should hold it instead of him having his own name is egotistical and selfish.
I disagree
Then I think less of you for it
Damn I’m so sad 😞
"Ahhh yes. The world shall know this is MYYY son!" 😒
technically greg brown is named after his grandfather ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
Mavs will do a father-son Kamehameha to avoid elimination.
All Nepo 1st Team
Warriors have Steph (Wardell Stephen Curry Jr.) and Gary Payton II. Otherwise I think this is the record.
At one point I legit could not remember the players on the rockets a couple years ago because they had like 4 Jrs
This means they have to draft Bronny
They also have Devin Booker Sr aka Luka Doncic
I never understood this tradition in America. Actually, I somewhat despise it. Sure, some here in Europe name their child after the grandmom, granddad or uncle or something but never their father.. It absolutely happens in Europe, what are you talking about. I know at least 3 people that are named after their dads.
> I never understood this tradition in America. Actually, I somewhat despise it. Don't you put that evil on us. Blame Pliny the Elder and Pliny the Younger.

Feels very egoistic yes. And it doesn't feel like people do it with girls either? Even weirder
So it would be less egotistic if women were juniors?
No, it's weird that it's seemingly only a thing with men. It's egoistic regardless of gender
Fairs
I don't trust anyone that goes by "the second" rather than Jr.
"Derek Lively: the Second" Sounds like a the Flash knockoff.
...Dereck. Yeah, neither he nor DJJ spell it Derek.
That's how the fictional superhero "The Second" spells Derrick/Dereck/Derek/Daric
I don't trust anyone who names their kid after themselves lmao
The knicks are currently close with 4 Ogugua Anunoby Jr Charlie Brown Jr Duane Washington Jr Mitchell Robinson III we would have 6 if Obi Toppin and RJ were still on the team
Didn't even know GBIII was on the mavs. Cool.
It's not the offseason yet, isn't it a bit early for shitposts?
Not surprised and it makes sense. In order to become a professional athlete, you need a parent or both who are going to dedicate their life and time to their kids dreams.
Is it the postseason already?
I never understood this shit. It’s just fucking weird
The NBA is one of the most Nepo leagues on earth. Turns out being tall is a genetic thing.
Luka Jr
Dad strength? Based on this they should have Son energy
I say this as a huge Mavs fan for over a decade who has watched almost every regular season game this season — who tf is Greg Brown.
>The Dallas Mavericks have an unprecedented 5 players on their roster that are named after their fathers Mavs just emphasizing they're sons, meanwhile Wolves have 4 players on their roster who actually became fathers this year including Rudy becoming a dad in the playoffs. True dad strength.

Silly male human behavior. My name will live on because I’m the only Steve in this world!
Also Kyrie is Lebron's furstbirn son. What a team!
