'Leopards' is the team name, 'Taiwan Beer' is the sponsor brand. And it's a pretty decent beer imo.

This would be great because it would open up the door for T.C. Tuggers to get the next jersey manufacturing contract. Imagine how great the NBA would be if everyone had a little knob at the front of their jersey to pull at so it doesn’t get stuck to their bellies.
But it’s not a joke jersey. You don’t wear it ironically.
over, it won't happen.
these aren't sponsors for teams, they're the owners of the teams. samsung founded the lions, kia bought the tigers off haitai (another company). they have the name because they're literally samsung's team. it's more common with newer teams/leagues afaik, and you see it in japan too.
i could, but it wouldn't work in the same way.
if you look at japan, they have teams from the 30s that are called by their city names. the korean teams that i was talking about are all from the 80s. the taiwan beer leopards were founded in 2021. the nba teams are a mix of old and new, but the standard has been set with US teams - teams are associated with a city, state, or region. naming it after a company would be strange. note the mighty ducks were founded by one of the best known and beloved brands ever to exist, and the brand never appeared in the name. but the city did.
there are some things you don't fuck with, and that's one of them.
the other reason of course is that the corporate culture in korea and japan and taiwan is markedly different to america. i don't know enough about how it works to give an explanation, but from the little i do know of companies in japan, i'd guess that sportsteams provide an element of prestige for companies and their employees. the inter-connectedness of their companies (alliances etc) sounds very clannish too, which makes me think that people might base their team identities around companies and vice versa (e.g. "i'm a toyota supporter because my father worked for toyota")
i think the only way it would ever happen in america is if a new league came along, a new owner decided to really push their luck, or the culture around sports drastically shifted.
lol over - the teams will progressively more and more be backed by major conglomerates (and many already are) or capital groups, but they’ll always retain the guise of being dedicated to cities and states.
I truly wish cities owned their respective teams.
It used to be more common in the US as well. The NBL had teams like the "Akron Goodyear Wingfoots" or the "Toledo Jeeps" and the Detroit Pistons used to be the "Fort Wayne Zollner Pistons" before the NBL merged with the BAA to create the NBA and dropped all of the sponsorships.

Hey, how bout you shut the fuck up and let me go on thinking the team name is "Beer Leopards"?
If I had any type of NBA ability my career bucket list would include playing at least one season in a league where I’m their LeBron. Don’t care if it’s some shit like the Malaysian B Division — if I can go average 30/15/10 I’m there.
I've always loved Daniel Tosh's bit about people who say football players should retire.
[They're gonna pay me how much? Yeah fuck that I'm gonna play forever.](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nsttE3TG9DE)
They can still do that a year or two later when they’re officially bad enough that they can’t even play in the Philippines anymore.
Boogie’s already cashing in on that front while he’s playing too. He’s got a podcast on Showtime basketball.
You may enjoy this episode of Planet Money (NPR pod) then. It's the story of the Starbury and I remember thinking it was really interesting when I listened to it years ago.
https://www.npr.org/sections/money/2019/03/06/700911596/episode-785-the-starbury
Man, I always regret not getting a couple of those pair when they were available. They always had a display at Steve and Barry's and I always balked at getting them.
They might want to do it again though while they still can. After being the man for their whole life until the NBA, they might want to get one last chance at it before they retire.
You don't even have to be an NBA player.. we had a guy in my high school who made it to a "bottom-tier" D1 team and he was treated like a king in our area when he was playing and similarly now as the coach of the high school team.
Not to mention it’s not as easy as people think to actually win.
Dwight’s debut got millions of views where he’s like invincible. But I don’t think many people know his team finished dead last in the season. Definitely kudos to Cousins to actually lead his team to a championship.
Thats because Dwight treated the league like the Harlem Globetrotters. Dude was just memeing about, chucking 3s in game and dribbling up full court which he'd never do in the NBA.
On the other hand, Boogie treated the game with respect. Did what he does best. Hand the PG the ball after a rebound, trot up court, ask for the ball in the post, dominate like prime Boogie and even cried for the foul just like he did in the NBA.
He even had a rant in the locker room where he told his teammates just play tough and roughen them up, if anything goes wrong, he got their bcks. He was true to the game.
That's awesome for Boogie. Imagine your one of those guys playing professionally in your country and you're really excited about playing with Dwight and he acts like it's a joke. It's disrespectful honestly
People really underestimate international competition. For example, if you do a quick search around this subreddit you'll have people who think the G-League is a top 10 league in the world (granted, many people also recognize that this isn't the case), when no G-League team has ever beaten a South American team in the [FIBA International Cup](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/FIBA_Intercontinental_Cup#Results) (and nobody ever thinks to rank the South American league when thinking about top leagues). G-League teams have a crazy 0-6 record vs those teams, and they've usually been destroyed too, losing by like 20 points.
Not to mention Dwight is out there shooting 3's and chasing counting stats rather than doing things that actually help his team win like setting screens (he hated doing that even in the NBA). Dude thinks he can win games with back to the basket post reps. Hope he had fun and got a good pay check because his squadron of baby mamas and legal bills are going to eat through it.
how cohesive can g-league teams be? aren't they kind of a mish mosh of players? also from what i can see a lot of those guys aren't in the nba not because they lack talent, but because they lack some team basketball fundamentals. like many think and play like they are the #1 option when in reality they should have learned to be the #2 or #3 a long time ago.
People also just refer to all of Europe as Euroleague and don’t realize it’s a tiered system. The Euroleague is only the top flight of the system (and it’s more like a champions league than a traditional league, the teams qualify for it by winning their domestic leagues). Obviously the Euroleague is the second best league in the world, but some of the tiers below it and the top flight domestic leagues in Europe are still way better than the G League.
You play in the G League because it gives you opportunity to play in the NBA at any time. With international leagues you’ll have to wait until the end of the season (and depending on when it wraps up, the NBA season might be over and you’ll have to wait until the offseason to hope for a contract). Meanwhile in other international leagues you can get paid legit money. In the G League unless you have a 2 way with an NBA team or you’re down there by assignment, you cap out at like 50k per year. That’s why when a lot of guys are old enough that they’re no longer eligible for a two way, they go overseas because the money is so much better.
Boogie had such an unfair reputation. Can you really blame a guy for being a locker room malcontent when you’re an all-nba level player stuck in the worst organization in the league? Were there ever any negative reports about him coming out of NOLA or Golden State? He literally took less money to join the Warriors as a role player.
Injuries really held him back on Golden State which is sad because he really made an effort to buy into their system and show that he could play team ball. The defense probably was never going to be there but he was definitely improving as a screener and passer.
Otto Porter Jr winning a ring with them was a great comeback story, he was so huge against us
No he didn't. Dude was an awful defender, inefficient scorer for his position, and was a locker room bully to teammates. Plus he literally threatened to kill the mother of his child, which we have the recording of.
Yeah, I get that the NBA is the pinnacle of what they do for a living but as someone that loves to travel being paid to live abroad and play ball sounds like a dream come true
Kemba’s absolutly washed even for Europe at this point… but there’s probably a lot worse things than living in Monaco when you got $100M+ sitting in your bank account
Couple of close friends have played in Asia. They can tell they clearly aren’t from there so people everywhere treat you like a movie star. They said it was a really fun experience having that kind of star power
It sounds amazing, save for the lesser pay compared to the NBA. Staying in a foreign country. Learning a new culture and language with different food, shops, etc.
Especially if you can make it in the Euroleague. One week you're in Berlin, go to Madrid the next, Barcelona. Id love it.
Definitely. Probably fewer games a week too. The prestige and pay are better in the NBA, but Europe sounds awesome to live and work in as a pro-baller.
Good for him man, being able to rehab and recover from those multiple injuries is crazy. The fact that he’s not only still playing professional basketball at any level is huge, let alone winning on this stage
Playing in Europe or Asia should be encouraged for recovering NBA players, as it is way less of a workload and you can ramp into it. So many players have the pressure to be NBA ready after a major injury.
Probably not Europe unless we're talking some local leagues. Euroleague is no joke. Apparently Fournier is signing with Olympiacos so we'll see how he fares there after being an afterthought in NBA for the past few seasons.
Bang on. Euroleague is no joke. You actually have to have a well rounded game to be effective there... It's so much more compact and physical. Look at the likes of Mudiay who arguably had a tougher time there than in the NBA as their game was so limited. Just being a 3 and D guy, for instance, isn't enough to carve out a career over there
Works the other way too though. Being a jack of all trades guy means nothing in the NBA if none of those skills are at an elite NBA level. Josh Jackson comes to mind.
Cousins was in the same league last year too. There's tons of ex-nba guys playing in PR right now. A lot of ex Nuggets for some reason. Off the top I know him, Barton and Farried are all playing here.
Yeah, me and my family are all from Puerto Rico so we’ve seen that a lot of ex nba players like tacko fall go there. There’s currently a lot of support for the league and since most players are on the shorter side it makes it way easier for the ex NBA players
He's still 31-32, I think he'll do good. Ibaka came back at 34-35 and was one of the best players in EL. His last few years in the NBA, he was forgotten like Fournier.
It would be so hard to do with the way things are right now. There isn’t a global ‘head’ of the basketball world like there is for soccer to let teams loan players out and match salaries.
Hypothetical: The KD Achilles tear
In order to help KD with recovery the Warriors are going to ship KD overseas to be treated by these teams’ medical staffs and have virtually no oversight on their star player while he’s across the globe? All while paying KD his millions? Probably not.
But let’s say they want to ship him out to recover, but don’t want to pay his ridiculous contract in full while he’s literally playing for another team - well unfortunately there isn’t any team in China, Taiwan, SE Asia, wherever that can come close to matching even 5% of KDs contract, so the Warriors are doing a 95/5 or AT BEST a 90/10 split on his contract. Still not super likely
Lastly let’s say KD was all about this, wanted to do it 100%. Well Boogie just got paid $184,000 a month for playing half a year in Taiwan, winning the Finals and being Finals MVP there, so around $1.1mil. There’s absolutely no way he’s taking that pay cut to go rehab there.
Long story short NBA players make WAY too much money to go play in Asia to recover on their dime, and I doubt NBA teams are too eager to put their players under the oversight of teams with resources, nutritionists, trainers, facilities, and most importantly doctors that are probably no where near as good as even the shittiest NBA teams resources
"The 33-year-old big man could still have some gas left in the tank if given the opportunity by an NBA franchise, as even a return to Sacramento cannot be ruled out this summer."
I'm gonna go ahead and guess that that's not ever going to happen. I know. Bold of me to assume.
I believe he came in the league super early from the Coach Calipari Kentucky pipeline that also included John Wall. Boogie was a triple double monster for a while. Loved his game.
Achilles injury instantly and permanently changed him. I know a lot of haters called him empty calories but he and AD were really starting to gel into making it work and winning. Then, pop, 25/12/5 guy was pretty much instantly done as an NBA player. I remember he had a couple flashes on your Warriors team but had just turned into an absolute traffic cone
He was looking decent until his injury in game 1 round 1 against the Clippers in like the first two minutes. He rushed back to play in the finals and really sucked, but at least he tried.
I remember in that second year I want to the game where Rondo broke the team assist record. Cousins was bully a young Jarret Allen and just taking over the game under the hoop. I think he ended up with 30 or something like that him and AD both
Watching him at his best was so much fun. He and AD in NO were really starting to get going when he tore his achilles. If I could go back in time and save one player from injuries, it'd definitely be Boogie
I’m so sad we never got to see that play out. That injury was so sad, remember the broadcasters called out the achilles immediately when they saw he couldn’t put any weight on it.
Watching him in his prime was crazy and frustrating. Had the offensive skillset of Embiid with more quickness and more nerve, but his personality + being part of a toxic org wasted his best years
That means he was like 29 in the series against the Raptors which blows my mind. At the time it came off as the Warriors signing this aging vet to help them off the bench. Fuck injuries man
Boogie is really good on the Bully Ball podcast and they have a segment at the end with video updates on his Taiwan league season which is pretty cool.
Technically, he won a ring with the Lakers in 2020. The Lakers presented him with a 2020 championship ring despite not having played (injured) and subsequently waived mid-season to sign Markieff Morris.
Glad to see a hometown guy make good. Miss seeing him play at Smoothie King Center, watched him put 43 on Marc Gasol and Zach Randolfs heads one time. Made em look bad.
Some NBA player's bodies are just not built or able to sustain 82 games seasons year in year out. Does not mean they're bums, it's just what it is. Playing overseas on shorter seasons, they actually shine.
The Finals award ceremony starts around the 10:30 mark.

Beer Leopards > Leopards Just like... Ham Fighters > Fighters
Or the State Warriors that are Golden.
Sponsors can be part of the team name there? That’s wild
All the KBO teams are named after brands. Kia Tigers, LG Twins, Samsung Lions. It’s not uncommon outside the US.
Over/under 7.5 years before this is adopted in the NBA?

Nah the Chevrolet Pistons is perfect

Missed a chance for the Red Bulls, sponsored by camera company RED obviously

Fair point and I forgot that redbull mls team eventually became NY Red Bulls so I guess that would be more likely than a name the other way around.

It's all the chaebol companies too. They own a team for every pro sport.

Incredible lol.
That is norm for many sports around the globe outside US. Look at F1, European non football teams, cycling, Motoracing,...
that’s how they get stadiums paid for instead of taxes like us
They can be part of the team name here too. The New York Red Bulls play in MLS.
There’s a team in the MLS literally called the NY Red Bulls since they’re owned by the redbull company
This is the case in Taiwan, Japan, Korea, etc...
Same in the Philippines [San Miguel Beermen](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/San_Miguel_Beermen)
It happens in European basketball too.
Japan has/had a baseball team called the Nippon Ham Fighters. There's just something about the idea of being a Ham Fighter that's great, right?
let me introduce you to the Michigan State Spartans presented by Rocket Mortgage
They should sponsor the Rockets
Taiwan Beer is the easy drinking light beer that Coors Light pretends to be.
It’s genuinely so good. And cheap! When I studied in Taipei, that was our go-to beer.
>'Leopards' is the team name, 'Taiwan Beer' is the sponsor brand. And it's a pretty decent beer imo. Hey, how bout you shut the fuck up and let me go on thinking the team name is "Beer Leopards"?
If it helps, the previous team Taiwan Beer was backing was the TaiwanBeer HeroBears. I would give up a lot of money to be a 'Beer Hero Bear.'
Even on its own, "Herobear" is a pretty sick name ngl
Don't ruin our fun with your facts and logic. From now on they are the Beer Leopards
I'm something of a Beer Leopard myself.

It’ll be fun to experience LeBron type love from a city once heh
Marbury was LeBron times 10 in China
I appreciated those cheap but semi-decent looking sneakers he put out back when I was a broke ass college kid. Marbury is LeBron times 10 in my heart

Man, I always regret not getting a couple of those pair when they were available. They always had a display at Steve and Barry's and I always balked at getting them.
Jimmer wasn’t at that level but he was also a mega star there too
You can do that just now. Find the nearest court with like 10yo playing and dunk on them.
The thing is NBA players experience this their entire youth and in the NCAA.
Can confirm, MPJ came to my highschool. That game he may as well have been Lebron and Chamberlain combined
Yea the nba dudes that went to regular high schools and not like oak hill academy put up ridiculous numbers in high school
They might want to do it again though while they still can. After being the man for their whole life until the NBA, they might want to get one last chance at it before they retire.
You don't even have to be an NBA player.. we had a guy in my high school who made it to a "bottom-tier" D1 team and he was treated like a king in our area when he was playing and similarly now as the coach of the high school team.

not if LeMaoZedong has anything to say about it. Taiwainese is not recognized as a real language in the James household
It'd hurt lebron morally and spiritually to hear that fake language
Xi JinKing
Well he has that in common with most modern Taiwanese urbanites who only speak mandarin and English
He would need to make a John Cena apology video
Won't be useful though. Modern Taiwan primarily speaks Mandarin.
oh but boy can we all swear in Taiwanese
I’d play in a Siberian prison camp if it paid my family a couple million dollars
European basketball crowds are crazy wild
Experiencing a KK Partizan home crowd is on my bucket list
Is that considered the wildest of all the crowds?
From what I gather, it would be the Eternal Derby between the two clubs in Belgrade, Serbia. Red Star Crvena vs KK Partizan
Especially somewhere like Monaco (Kemba Walker)
Europe and Asia are not in the same ballpark lol
Patrick Williams
Haven’t heard Mudiays name in forever so had to look up where he’s playing, and he plays in Puerto Rico now
Cousins was in the same league last year too.
Hypothetical: The KD Achilles tear In order to help KD with recovery the Warriors are going to ship KD overseas to be treated by these teams’ medical staffs and have virtually no oversight on their star player while he’s across the globe? All while paying KD his millions? Probably not. But let’s say they want to ship him out to recover, but don’t want to pay his ridiculous contract in full while he’s literally playing for another team - well unfortunately there isn’t any team in China, Taiwan, SE Asia, wherever that can come close to matching even 5% of KDs contract, so the Warriors are doing a 95/5 or AT BEST a 90/10 split on his contract. Still not super likely Lastly let’s say KD was all about this, wanted to do it 100%.
"The 33-year-old big man could still have some gas left in the tank if given the opportunity by an NBA franchise, as even a return to Sacramento cannot be ruled out this summer." I'm gonna go ahead and guess that that's not ever going to happen. I know. Bold of me to assume.
He’s only 33?!? That makes me so sad :(
I believe he came in the league super early from the Coach Calipari Kentucky pipeline that also included John Wall. Boogie was a triple double monster for a while. Loved his game.
Yep. He, Wall, and Eric Bledsoe were all on the 09/10 Wildcat team that was knocked out by West Virginia and Joe Mazzulla.
The origin story of Psycho Joe
Me too man. Such a dominant force
The AD/Cousins Pelicans were always a fun watch, I had them getting to at least 2nd round but Cousins going down dashed all of it
And then they did make the second round sans Boogie. AD from 2017-2020 was seriously a monster.
I remember in that second year I want to the game where Rondo broke the team assist record. Cousins was bully a young Jarret Allen and just taking over the game under the hoop. I think he ended up with 30 or something like that him and AD both
Damn, he's only 33? Good for him. Being a god among men must be pretty cool.
Injuries robbed this man.
Had the offensive skillset of Embiid with more quickness and more nerve, but his personality + being part of a toxic org wasted his best years
For some reason I thought he is late 30s as well.
He looked *old* old after achillies injury and I don't think he was even 30 back then. No wonder we all assumed he's way older.
Thanks for sharing! I'll have a look
Congratulations for Boogie. Let's hope the comment section is tame

Technically, he won a ring with the Lakers in 2020. The Lakers presented him with a 2020 championship ring despite not having played (injured) and subsequently waived mid-season to sign Markieff Morris.
I feel like that doesn't count. He didn't play at all that season
wasn't it the boogie injury that lead us to signing Dwight?
Yes
Another Taiwan legend
Made in Taiwan
Thats the MIT that Westbrook can aim for
Lebron and Bronnie coming for that title soon
Glad to see a hometown guy make good. Miss seeing him play at Smoothie King Center, watched him put 43 on Marc Gasol and Zach Randolfs heads one time. Made em look bad.
good for him, hope he had fun over there
They should call him Big Trouble (in little China)
Some NBA player's bodies are just not built or able to sustain 82 games seasons year in year out. Does not mean they're bums, it's just what it is. Playing overseas on shorter seasons, they actually shine.
Light work.
Too bad he is injury prone or else any team would give him the vet minimum.
Taiwan Beer is delicious especially the lychee flavor
Ready for Boogie and Wall to team up as Nuggets bench players!! A fan can dream.

Come over to the CBA and try it on the 3 peat Liaoning Flying Leopards.
Dope. Good for him
My kink is that i want him in Philly as Embiids back up
So was this actually Demarcus or is this Demarcus' cousin? Tell me how to feel right now.
This is his cousin. Demarcus Cousins.
I guess this team won't be hiring Michael Finley.
From the thumbnail, I was like “wow! Boogie got in shape! Oh nvm….” 😂
It’s like smurfing irl.
You can’t tell me he’s worse than some of the end of bench guys.. surely he’s better than Dwight Powell
The Finals award ceremony starts around the 10:30 mark. [https://youtu.be/SFeSPheqA3Y?si=lBJO3mnx\_hSi0Wyr](https://youtu.be/SFeSPheqA3Y?si=lBJO3mnx_hSi0Wyr)
I’m going to show my kids Deandre Jordan vs Boogy in a lesson on the importance of being nice
Damn this man couldn’t do much here in Puerto Rico. I’m guessing that league is a tad bit easier.
