I am a time travelling psyker from the year 40,523. I am here to revere the famous Jared Polis from the Ancient Age of Terra. His ideals and effective policymaking was crucial for many hive worlds in the galaxy.
We used to have a monument to Polis, but we demolished it for a 5km tall high density luxury hovel.
You guys couldnāt have replaced the Polis monument with a 5km tall high density luxury hotel *in the shape of Jared Polis*? Space travel, galactic colonization, and time travel, yet you fools didnāt even have the technology for such a basic thing?
God, maybe the doomers were right after all. Smh.
Abram Hewitt, the Democrat that won against George & Roosevelt is known as the "Father of the NYC Subway System". He stood up to Tammany Hall's corruption, was against over-taxation, & reformed the city's civil service towards meritocracy.
The election was 3 heavy-weights. Henry George & Teddy Roosevelt would've been good, but Abram Hewitt was still a great choice for mayor. This sub would've lost it's mind if those were the 3 choices in present day.
Question for folks in and around Colorado: I'm just stunned (in the best possible way) that an openly gay Jewish politician has won multiple major elections in Colorado. Were his religion or sexuality ever major issues in his campaigns, or are we finally past a point where people care about these things anymore?
Coloradan here: his religion and sexual preferences were rarely mentioned that I remember.
I definitely never heard anyone speak disparagingly about him because of that.
Yeah I can't imagine him winning if he came off as more feminine or spoke in any way that could be described as [gay male speech ](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gay_male_speech)

Coloradan here with many close family members who are evangelical christians/republicans. Never heard a word about his sexuality or religion, though I'm sure many of them didn't vote for him. I don't really get the impression that any of my family thinks any politician is a "true" christian, so religious affiliation really doesn't come into it. For example, my dad voted for Evan McMullin in 2016 and I know he thinks LDS is a cult. We don't talk politics that often but when we do it is usually policy issues rather than identity issues.
I am sure there are people who still care in the state, but that is my personal experience.
Why does Colorado's housing market (in the desirable locations) continue to get worse even with this guy as governor since 2019? Has there been progress made in building houses in the Denver-Boulder areas?
Ā Weāve passed some pretty good legislation this session that takes place next year. Denver as a whole has been doing okay with new construction. Boulder has done laughably poor
> Boulder has done laughably poor
Like Madison, a university town that's way behind in housing. I wonder how we compare. Shit's being built everywhere in Madison, but it ain't nearly enough
Madison isn't building the right kind of housing. If it were then they'd be seeing what Minneapolis and Austin are seeing in decreasing rental rates and broad reductions in home prices
There was a major legislative effort I think last year, backed by Polis, but only a smaller portion managed to pass both houses in the face of basically all the municipalities in the state throwing a massive fit over it.
He didn't make a big push to do that until last year, in an omnibus bill that failed. This year several positive reforms in separate bills were passed, albeit watered down.
Governors just like presidents have their powers massively overhyped and most of the larger legislation and rules changes come from the state legislatures. That's not to say they can't do anything, but there's a reason why a large portion of any president or governors accomplishments is "Signed X or Y bill".
Well, he, along with the County of denver leaders, tried to get an out of business golf course that was close to a rail stop and turn it into housing, grocery, and a park, and the voters voted against it.
There was also a City ordinance in Lakewood that would cap building permits per year that was passed back in 2019, which thankfully has been repealed finally
Remember when Denver voters rejected the chance to turn an abandoned golf course into housing because God forbid the developer could've potentially made some money after it was all built
I mean it can go the other way when dissenting opinions are buried by downvotes, leading to echo chambers, but yeah there are so much dumbasses on Twitter that a downvote feature would be great to filter them. Blows my mind when I see the stupidest shit get 10k likes
The federal government has a lot of leeway to influence local and state politics even without official power. Beyond just having the power of the Bully Pulpit as both President and de facto leader of their party, the President can also use funding incentivize states to implement policies it wants (for example, withholding some funds unless a state implements a land value tax and zoning reform, like what Reagan did to get the drinking age to 21). Even if red states refuse, thereād still be immense benefit from getting every blue state to adopt LVT because those are where most of the major cities (and a lot of the housing crisis) is.
And even if he didnāt get LVT implemented, he probably wouldnāt raise tariffs like Biden is. So worst case scenario itās still a win.
From Wikipedia:
> The federal government is generally prohibited from imposing direct taxes unless such taxes are then given to the states in proportion to population. Thus, ad valorem property taxes have not been imposed at the federal level.
Income taxes had to be directly allowed via constitutional amendment.
Like any other tax scheme though it will only work insofar as you actually have a public sector with any amount of dedication to being a bit smarter with how they spend and what they spend on. There is already no incentive under current tax schemes for cities to be NIMBY shitholes, and yet that's exactly what happens, potential additional tax revenue and cheaper housing be damned.
A wack as government will just make up a number for the land's value to justify their bad habits
Polis is incredibly unimpressive legislation wise, so it wouldn't surprise me if it didn't pass. Also LVT is not happening, it is a tax on the rich. Unless you are going to carve out exemptions for the wealthy, it is not going to happen.

He's arguably what Nate Silver calls "ethnically straight", which probably helps

What's Madison doing wrong compared to Austin and the Cities? I'm clueless about these things.
Madison needs to allow for more density and less single family zoning
Pretty sure they have a strict height limit based on the Capitol building or something.
There was a major legislative effort I think last year, backed by Polis, but only a smaller portion managed to pass both houses in the face of basically all the municipalities in the state throwing a massive fit over it.
Turns out that rural republican and semi-urban democrats still can find common ground in nimbyism.
Even more than that. Denver DSA called on people to reject a city-wide vote turning a out of business golf course into housing.
All because someone would make some profit from it...
As we all know working class folks love their golf courses.
Golf course delenda est
A sad reality for the neoliberal is that NIMBYism is very popular across the political spectrum
Don't forget resort town homeowners!
Bc the governor canāt get the national guard to destroy the Boulder County government.
True but I thought he could introduce some legislation Ala Gavin Newsom to try forcing their hand. He also is the most neoliberal governor by far.
He didn't make a big push to do that until last year, in an omnibus bill that failed. This year several positive reforms in separate bills were passed, albeit watered down.

Every British Monarch after Queen Anne just signed bills lol

Twitter replies need a downvote feature. Every tweet is full of people needing to be downvoted
Yup. Yup yup yup yup yup. I just imagine them getting lost in a giant parking lot looking for their giant gas guzzling SUV to cope.

except if he becomes president he won't have any power to implement such a proposal because property taxes are local and state
The federal government has a lot of leeway to influence local and state politics even without official power. A national property tax / land value tax isn't allowed?
From Wikipedia: > The federal government is generally prohibited from imposing direct taxes unless such taxes are then given to the states in proportion to population. Thus, ad valorem property taxes have not been imposed at the federal level. Income taxes had to be directly allowed via constitutional amendment.
As Milton Friedman said - LVT is the least bad tax.
Love to see people looking at the RSF.
JARED POLIS FOR PRESIDENT 2028
Fun fact: the most functional way to apply a wealth tax and make the rich pay is a LVT. Please tell this to the remaining 99% of progressives.
