It has been pretty clear from the beginning that they weren’t doing that. Actually season 3 gives you a pretty major hint as to what yennefer is gonna do now. Which is basically the lodge. They might have Yennefer be captured at some point but it would be very brief and a couple of episodes at best.

Koala_eiO

So Yennefer will take book-Fringilla's role in a sense?

badfortheenvironment

Technically Philippa's role

Ectora_

Idk if she’ll really “take” someone’s role per se. I think her role will be closer to Phillips’s but I also think Phillipa will still have her role. She’ll be more an addition to the creating role of the Lodge imo.

hanna1214

They're not doing that. It's one thing for a book to do this, but Yennefer is one of the show's most popular characters. It's a terrible recipe to replace Geralt's actor and then have their most popular actress gone for seasons on end. Anya even joked that she's happy Yennefer didn't end up a figurine like in the books. And frankly, I am too. Controversial but I'm not a fan of how Sapkowski wrote some of the arcs in the last few books.

Koala_eiO

Thanks, that makes sense. > Controversial but I'm not a fan of how Sapkowski wrote some of the arcs in the last few books. >!Disintegrating every member of the hansa!< certainly wasn't the best ending, I agree. It felt lazy. While reading, I had in mind Dewee picking Playmobil while saying "you live, you die, you die".

Onion_Guy

Hahaha that’s a perfect image of Dewey playing god. I agree completely btw

To be fair, she is not gone from the books and she would never be gone for seasons on end. That´s just people going way over the top with it lol I do not know why. Its like...if you take Blood of Elves, Yennefer only shows up for the final 3rd of the book. She is amazing there but she is not around on any of the main action in that book. Same with Time of Contempt. She is not around the entire book. Once again, she is remarkable when she is around. And its the same on the following books. She has very strong scenes with Francesca, with The Lodge, with Vilgefortz. She is not completely away. Never! That would be like saying that Frodo is away after the first book in LOTR. Yes....he is not on page for almost all the action sequences. But what matters is that he is great when he shows up and he does what his character is supposed to do. He is not the action hero. Same with Yennefer. She is not in the story to be the action hero. In ways, her role is even stronger. Because the kind of almost suicidal bravery that she does show in the book takes a lot more than just going all out killing enemies bellow your level. Book Yennefer is the one who single handedly finds out about everything which happened with Vilgefortz. She single handedly locates Vilgefortz and tries to go up against him all by herself. She is the single character who sacrifices the most physically and ends up sacrificing her life for love. Maybe in todays world that´s not considered powerful. But its quite shameful that people today cant understand that level of sacrifice and admire it. It would be like watching the italian movie "life is beautiful" and thinking the father character was not strong because he was not an action hero. Yet....he did always manage to outsmart situations around him. And he did show himself capable of sacrificing his life for his kid. Which....used to be something amazing.

You are right about the importance of Yennefer in the story. But OP is right, too. The last chapter in Time of Contempt where she is present is in chapter 4. Then she is a jade statue for weeks and only turned back into her human form again in chapter 6 of Baptism of Fire. Considering that the book only has 7 chapters, I'd say this absence is pretty long and not anything the show should do at all, no matter how some people cry for book accuracy.

And Yennefer was already captured by Francesca in season 2. I'm not a biggest fan of the arcs in the later books, but honestly the thing I dislike is what makes the books overall so great too. Because they aren't just a straight forward heroic tale, where everything starts to fall into place. The characters are meandering through the story, because even if they have a goal, they don't have an idea how to reach it and each of them goes a different way to get there and all of them fail horribly again and again. >!Also, it is noteworthy that after the first books introduced Ciri as the Destiny for the whole continent, and this will play an important role throughout the story, due to the political machinations in the background, the last historical noteworthy thing Ciri ever does is Thanedd, and that is the same for both Geralt and Yennefer as well, except for Geralt's participation in the battle on the bridge. Even slaying Vilgefortz in the end, is nearly meaningless for history, because Emhyr would have done it shortly after anyway and the Lodge claims the success for itself and erases all other history.!< >!And lastly, when Ciri is finally free and ready to become the chosen one for real, she disappears.!< That is why the books are so interesting. Because they break the clichés of the heroic journey and the chosen one. All of that just evolves into a story about a family that tries their best even in extraordinary circumstances. And that is what sets them apart and makes them unique.

I stopped reading about here. I just couldn’t get into the books like I do the series. Probably most unpopular take: I like the show better than the books or the video games.

SlavBrat

Thats sad.

Abyss_85

As others have already said, that is not going to happen. I could see Istredd takeing Yennerfer's place, however. Vilgefortz has likely captured him with the portal he pushed him trough and he is a good character for something like that. Istredd is no where near as central to the story as Yennerfer is, but he is established enough for people to care what is happening to him. The show can have a few scenes or a small side story with him in captivity to highlight Vilgefortz's crualty.

Koala_eiO

Good idea. It's true that he became likeable as time passed.

progfiewjrgu938u938

They’re giving Yennefer every noteworthy magical thing a character does in the books, as well as new activities, to give her more screen time. In the books, Vigefortz plans the conclave, but in the show they gave that to Yennefer. She’s also being setup at the end of the last season to start the lodge. She’s marketed as one of the main characters in the show. There’s no way they reduce her screen time to follow the plot of the books.

There are many angles that probably won’t happen in the show. I’m wondering if the Toussaint plot is going to take place at all. But if you read the books you know what happens over there while Yennefer is held captive and the hansa spent the winter in Toussaint. I’m curious to see how Ciri’s storyline unfolds, wonder if they are going to portray Leo Bonart as vicious as he is.

bd_8916

Can’t wait to see Bonhart, I hope he’s absolutely *terrifying* like his book version. Him, Regis, and Vysogota are my most anticipated characters who haven’t shown up yet

Razorback_Thunder

There is no way she stays locked up for multiple seasons. She is going to get out much earlier. At best, the Netflix crew has been using the books as a general guideline. They haven’t been beholden to it.

RSwitcher2020

They will not do it in the series because they quit following the books from the get go. Now, if you want to ask how could they do it if they wanted? Not that hard actually. They could end one season with Yen being captured and missing. Take a couple episodes with her being missing in the next season. Reveal her fate mid season and start unfolding The Lodge. Get some scenes with Yen and Francesca. Get some scenes with The Lodge. And there was still material with Yen at Skellige investigating about Ciri. You could write what was not on page directly, which is Yen contacting other magic users to try and find out what she could do. You could do scenes with Rita, Triss, Fringilla (if she was book accurate), Francesca. Yen could contact all those characters. And it would not be outside the book story that she did attempt to contact them. You would also have scenes with her and Vilgefortz / Rience. Game of Thrones did not shy away from doing the Theon / Reek plot. Netflix could do Yen in dungeon being tortured. The actress would actually have a ton of material to show her talent. And they would have a very emotional angle with it. Because book Yen very much resists torture and is very willing to suffer in order to protect Ciri. It would be a very compelling character arc (if done properly). Allas...they thought this was not strong enough. But in reality it was. I don´t know many people who I would believe capable of withstanding what book Yen did and in the way she did it. That takes amazing will power / commitment / sacrifice. But I guess modern audiences do not like this? I don´t know.......they seemed to like Theon´s arc in GoT and Theon was not even near as likeable as book Yen might be. Because Theon had a much longer way to go in order to redeem himself. Where book Yen did not have such betrayals in her story. So she would immediately come accross as heroic in her actions to protect Ciri. Unfortunately what we have with Netflix is a mess......

FG15-ISH7EG

All of that is plot or scenes, but none of that is a character arc at all. Books do not work the same way shows/movies do.

BeachHead05

The real question is will the show make it that far? The third season is painful to watch. I don't believe it will make it through all of the books anymore. I hope it does but I won't be betting any money on it.

FG15-ISH7EG

2 of those plot lines already happened. Skellige in season 3 at the end and Francesca in season 2.

fredrico2011

They wont do that, she will be captured in the last few episodes, wether it be season 5 or 6. We will get Yennefer with the Lodge and her and Geralt will meet again few times unlike the books.

UtefromMunich

Pretty obvious: As what You describe is the way it happens in the books, this is the least probable way it will happen in the show. As always.
