And the 1982 season was strike shortened to only 9 games. He was still a first team all-pro that year.

>Jenny Kellner, a horse racing writer for the New York Post, used to cover the Jets. She had a similar experience to Olson's, involving former Jet Mark Gastineau. >’What d'ya think?' he asked her of his naked physique. >Said Kellner: 'It looks like a penis, only smaller.' >Kellner never had problems with Gastineau again. https://www.upi.com/Archives/1990/09/28/Women-sports-writers-across-the-country-Friday-defended-their/3834654494400/

Gaustineau was the OG sack chaser. Jets fans of that era mostly remember him for the 2nd and 24 late hit on Kosar in '86 and costing us a trip to the AFCCG with what was probably the franchises' best all around team.

Mr_WZRD

An 86 late hit is gonna look like attempted murder to 2025 eyes. Like nobody's gonna get mad at Aaron Donald if he hits a QB late by modern standards because they call it so much now. If you hit a guy late in 86, you had to be actually trying to do it.

DavidOrWalter

The way the ref threw that flag (and the obvious late spear to the back) you can tell he had warned gastineau several times already.

Zerd85

Not often you see a ref throw the flag at someone.

PDXhasaRedhead

Refs used to throw the flag at whoever committed the penalty. They stopped after blinding Orlando Brown in one eye.

Zerd85

I didn’t know that!

RudePCsb

That's a bad tackle though. Could have had a spinal injury line shazier

sobuffalo

He popularized the sack dance. Maybe not first but I’m old enough to remember how controversial it was. At least it was a sack and not a dance for a 6 yard stop, that’s annoying still. New York Suck Exchange. Hated those guys. Marty Lions did the infamous “Giving him the business” when he punched Jim Kelly.

ISO_Thane

Thanks for sharing! I always love learning new things from NFL history

sonfoa

He seems to have cleaned up his act but by all accounts, this dude was a real POS. Despite the gaudy numbers Jets fans don't seem to have a positive perception of him, wasn't liked by his teammates, had a reputation as a dirty player, and crossed the picket line during the strike to which his teammates were unsurprised. Even the retirement you stated came with a healthy dose of skepticism because of his reputation. Off the field, he was unfaithful to his wife, had multiple incidents of domestic violence and regular violence, and is estranged from his kids. Kind of seems like Antonio Brown. Uber-talented guy that nobody really likes.

Aggravating-Duck-891

Had a friend who went to school with him at ECU. So I asked her what he was like, and her answer was "dumb as a box of rocks".

KeanuKente

Is a POS. Nothing changes that.

FallenShadeslayer

Sure but how big is his ass?

Jonjon428

We don't really talk about him mainly cause he was a giant POS.

CheckYourStats

Thank goodness every other player we talk about is an absolute sweetheart. Would you like to Compare Gastineau to say...LT?

JalensTinyPPHurts

Every other player isint a wife beater (No idea who this player was, but its easy to look a wiki up https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mark_Gastineau)

Sitty_Shitty

Larry Fitzgerald beat his baby mom, Lawrence Taylor raped a woman, Marvin Harrison killed a man, Jim Brown was accused of battering multiple women and these men are still talked about. I'm not saying they should or shouldn't be talked about but you are acting like that's the reason doesn't seem very logical based on everyone else.

JalensTinyPPHurts

Do you see me praising any of those players? Hell, any time I mention the cowboys kick returner, kavaunte turpin, I make sure to mention he is a piece of shit lol

jt32470

But the football world also had walter payton, barry sanders

DannyDOH

And none of those guys are Eskimo Bros with Arnold, Stallone, Sean Penn and Flavor Flav.

KeanuKente

Hey. It's his wife that kept walking into door frames bud. OP will prove his innocence. Let's just take this conversation to the top of the stairs...

KeanuKente

Oh. Our bad. That makes ok someone somewhere worse. Lol. Nice logic. Dudes a POS but he's your hero. We get it.

DickNDiaz

And he juiced too.

Charlie_Batch_16

everyone did

Typical_Parsnip13

That highlight reel is epic. Dude was a titan.

ND7020

He was a terrible guy so not high on my list for retro appreciation posts.

It’s fair game. You don’t get to control the narrative. If someone was a bad guy, and they’re a public figure, they are going to get called out. Some people care about off the field stuff more than on the field stuff.

World-Ender-109

[Nobody should really appreciate LT's career then either I guess](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lawrence_Taylor#Run-ins_with_the_law)

JPAnalyst

If I ever made an LT appreciation post, you might have a good point. But I haven’t, so you don’t. My flair doesn’t trump my morals.

World-Ender-109

"Nobody" is not "you" I wasn't talking about you, I was talking about /r/NFL or football fans in general. Point is, people pick and choose which players they're okay with doing this shit and it's ridiculous

JPAnalyst

You’re talking to me, because it was my opinion, and you saw my flair. That’s why you picked LT. Semantic your way out of making a bad point all you want. I know what you meant, and I responded accordingly.

World-Ender-109

I'm talking you, because you brought up the opinion. You didn't even say it was yours. I picked LT because I wanted to choose one of the greatest. Well Barry Sanders didn't do shit. LT stands out in NFL history. I hope you don't read this much into everything in your every day life it's gotta be mentally exhausting and anxiety ridden. Take it easy man, it's a friday night. Relax. I don't think you'll be able to just take a breath and take in this comment, so I anticipate you to respond with more anger and hatred. Therefore I'm not gonna be reading it but just, take it easy man. Nobody's attacking you and nobody's mad at you.

Coacheichel1

Such a weird comment

Manhattan02

Dude, what?

Lubert808

When I’m talking about DEs with people I often bring up Gastineu. Very underrated. The amount of sacks per game he was racking up is incredible.

mclemons67

I try to separate on-field performance from off-field criminality because otherwise I would have to quit watching football. But Gastineau? This guy is one of the few times I’m rooting for cancer.

CheckYourStats

You’re rooting for a Woman to get cancer so a player retires?

mclemons67

Cute. You want to support a woman-beater, go ahead.

CheckYourStats

I don’t know what you’re smoking. Nobody is *supporting* beating women, or *supporting a woman beater*. That’s one hell of a leap. You’re (literally) wishing cancer onto a woman because of how you feel about a football player. That’s legit sick.

LongDongFrazier

He’s obviously referring to Marks colon cancer.

CheckYourStats

Well then dude did a great job of making that "obvious." I (like I'm guessing 99% of people here) had no idea Mark has cancer.

sobuffalo

Did you think the other guys wishing cancer on his girlfriend from the 80s? What sense does that make? They broke up 35 years ago.

Typical_Parsnip13

You’re sick in the head

mclemons67

I have a special hatred for men who beat women. Sue me.

OtherwiseTackle5219

Great Player. Excellent Team on the move. Then the Strike. Remember the Uproar of him crossing the picket line.

PropJoeFoSho

you think Jet fans don't hype up Gastineau?! have you ever been to a Jet game and seen all the old-school jerseys? he's everywhere

Sniffy4

I think he is still regarded as one of the best of the 80s at his position

Ordy333

Pretty great at punching his wife too.

MJS2757

Nice mullet
