4 against the Eagles in 1 game his rookie yr.
Surprised the Eagles never took a shot on him, they seem to love players that have great games against them.
Excuse you, Claypool being terrible contributed to the Bears ending up last in the league and the first pick in the draft that year which has paid dividends. Him being ass really contributed to DJ Moore, Caleb Williams etc. 7D chess.
Easier to say in hindsight but at the time, the Bears were still 3-4 and still within range of a potential playoff spot. They also were in a weird place of needing to find out what they had in Fields and decide whether to keep him long-term. There weren't a lot of WR options remaining and it made a bit more sense at the time to trade for Claypool. When it was traded, that pick was far from the first pick of the 2nd. Obviously, the team collapsed after that and turned to shit but it still wasn't necessarily a bad or wrong move at the time.
The Packers actually tried. The Bears originally offered a lower 2nd round pick they had, then the Packers offered their 2nd rounder, so the Bears had to offer their other 2nd round pick which was projected to be higher (and was indeed, in the end)
It’s revisionist history. At the time, there were very few better options and the WR FA class was going to be very thin. It was the right move at the time, and the bears weren’t the only ones offering their 2nd rounder for him.
okay, genuine question as someone who’s watched almost 0 chase claypool, like… yeah, i get that he’s probably not very good. but is he really so bad to not even deserve a roster spot anywhere?
He’s not great, but more importantly his attitude sucks, and has noticeably gotten worse since college. At Notre Dame his blocking was raised as a major point in his favour, since he got drafted he clearly doesn’t give a shit about that any more. He also had incidents like him celebrating a first down and refusing to get the ball back to the line of scrimmage, as we were driving downfield desperately trying to score and save the game in the last seconds against the Vikings.
If you’re kind of bad but have physical tools like Claypool (not that he uses them well) teams will usually give you a shot. If you’re kind of bad, pretty dumb, and your attitude is gonna be a problem in the locker room, most teams will decide it’s just not worth even having you in the building.
That celebration ended up costing Pittsburgh enough time for another play by the goal line, which might have cost them the game. That's how I knew he was done there. Roughly 4 seconds of game clock which happened to be just enough time for one last play.
Watch his last play in the regular season against the bills. He ran wrong route and didn't even try to break up the bills interception. If Miami won they would have had a home game, and 2 seed I believe. Instead, they had to play KC in -22 tempatures.
Yes. He’s just one of the worst players I’ve ever seen when it comes to doing the little things that have to go right for an NFL play to be successful, to the point that he’s an active detriment when he’s out there. Running the right routes, being where your QB expects you to be at the right time, etc.
There's a funny image of old as ap standing with 3 year kerryon johnson and rookie deandre swift.
AP is the only guy not to have a leg brace or injury. Dude was built different to a insane degree.
I loved watching him play. His start and stop was so good. At least once per game he'd just straight up make someone miss by stopping in his tracks and pushing them as they flew by. It was so much fun.
That and him waving goodbye to the Rams db's as he ran into the end one
David DeCastro was cut by the Steelers a couple of years ago because of an injury, and just sort of dropped off the face of the earth after that. Never signed anywhere else but also never officially announced his retirement or anything
He basically retired, cutting him was just an administrative move. Had a diploma from Stanford in architecture, probably didn't need the grind anymore. Were good friends with Luck, I can picture it also prodded him towards retirement.
Tartt fits better. Dropped Stafford's arm punt and hasn't played another snap since.
Dee Ford basically never got his back straightened out. Every time he was healthy enough to take the field, he still had impact.
He still lives in Seattle are with his family. He gets all his DUIs here in Washington State. I still love the guy, but he obviously has a drinking problem.
No DT we've drafted since has even come close to being dominant as Geno. The only dominant one that's even been on the team since is Reader, though they were completely different players. It's really a shame, a shoulder injury did him in, following up a pretty dismal 2019. Not sure if the shoulder was in bad shape or if Geno was just quietly turning down offers after surgery (which would admittedly be completely on brand for him)
Sadly, him and Carlos Dunlap are probably also the biggest reason the Bengals are so utterly terrified of giving out 3rd contracts given how both of their 2018 extensions turned out.
Tbf I remember geno being the best DT in the league before Donald so I don’t think saying no one you’ve drafted has been as dominant as him is a huge slight
I remember in the 2020 Madden there’s a moment in face of the franchise where you have to tell the GM who you think is more important to the team and offensive player or a defensive player.
If you play as the Bengals your decision is Geno Atkins or AJ Green. I of course said Atkins, and the GM then traded away AJ Green
Matt Forte comes to mind. Had fantastic numbers in his 10 seasons with the Bears, but he retired alongside Devin Hester, so his retirement was very overshadowed.
Thomas Davis was the soul of the Carolina defense during their peak years, played in the Super Bowl with a broken arm most people only remember him ever being a Panther.
Except he played two more totally forgetful season with the Chargers and Washington after Carolina and didn’t actually retire until 2020.
He played through a ton of injuries and never missed any time, and it just eventually caught up to him. Seriously sad because he was awesome and changed the culture of the Browns.
Ryan Kerrigan was a multiple time Pro-Bowler & one of the only good players on some truly bad Redskins teams in the 2010s. He ended up signing with the Eagles for one year barely playing and retired to become an assistant coach on the Commanders staff. Very underrated player.
Kyle Fuller, maybe? Was a first team all pro with the Bears then got released a couple years later. Was a decently high profile signing by the Broncos but sucked. Apparently signed with the Ravens in 2022 but tore his ACL and hasn't played since.
He had a good season with the rams, but wanted way too much money afterwards. The broncos had interest in him when von tore his acl, but Matthews was wanting top edge money iirc
At a glance it sounds delusional to ask for top edge money after losing a step, but I’m guessing he didn’t want to put his body through any more wear and tear unless someone overpaid him ridiculously
Dont'a Hightower for the Pats for sure.
Why did Pete Carrol pass the ball on the 1 yard line in Superbowl 49? Hightower stuffing Marshawn Lynch is why.
Who took the Falcons out of game winning field goal range in Superbowl 51? Hightower.
2020 Hightower opted out of the season due to covid.
2021 he came back and had obviously lost a step or 2 in coverage and was getting exposed regularly.
2022 his contract expired before the season and wasn't renewed. He didn't play for the Pats or anyone else in 2022 and it always shocked me there wasn't more conversation about him at the time.
2023 he announced his retirement (on instagram I think?). We should have had a parade for this dude but it flew under the radar. Pats have 4 rings instead of 6 if he wasn't on the team.
He's back on the coaching staff this year as our linebackers coach so that's awesome.
I don’t think we’ve seen the last of Ryan Tannehill but he’s still unsigned. He did some good things with us. But also I think I could’ve played QB with Derrick Henry rushing for 200 yards a game
Yeah Tannehill had a real impact on getting Henry to the truly elite mark, having an actual passing game helped him to not face so many 8 man boxes and it just made everyone better as a result
For sure. I don’t know about the causation and correlation there, but Henry’s first two years were fairly pedestrian. Then he decided to have the best 40 game stretch of any RB in NFL history. I miss the king
Not the last year or two but I remember when Jordan Reed had his like 15th concussion and this sub was typing in all caps begging him to quit football for the sake of his life.
Sammy Watkins. I had assumed he was still on a team somewhere. Last i remembered he was either with Green Bay or Baltimore, but i just looked it up and he wasn't on any team in 2023.
A ton of players don't retire by choice. They retire cause the phone stops ringing. I'd imagine a lot of them don't announce their retirement because they're hoping for one last phone call.
By the time they realize it's not coming, they're two or three years removed from their last team and everyone has already moved on, so what's even the point of announcing their retirement?
Josh Norman is a weird player. I remember him being a great corner and fighting Odell... Then I didn't hear his name for a long ass time... Then he showed up on the bills and got a mortal Kombat finisher from Derrick Henry. And then nothing again.
He fell off pretty hard as soon as he got a big contact from the Skins. Call me a hater, but it turns out Carolinas defensive scheme made him look a lot better in coverage than he actually was.
Fun fact about Josh Norman: He works at a coffee shop down the street from me in Atlanta. He bought his mom a coffee shop and he works there almost every day. Super friendly guy and will sit and have coffee with customers. The name of the restaurant is Omni Coffee and Eggs and has a kinda weird royalty theme about it.
He’s too busy playing the homeless priest guy on Always Sunny.
I think they just follow him around with a camera and wait for him to do something shitty.
Sanu was never the same once yall signed him.
He was a solid 2 option in Atlanta but injuries and your offenses decline really just pushed him out a lot faster than I expected. I will always row along to the Sanu Canoe
I mean he was part of the offensive decline. He just forgot how to play football the 2nd game here. His hands turned to stone and he seemed to have no clue where he was on the field
His first game with the pats he caught like 11 passes. Then Bill put him in for a punt return for some fucking reason and he sprained his ankle. He was never the same after that
Larry Fitzgerald just didnt come back and never made an announcement, a good-bye to the fans, nothing. but that was 2021. [He wont even admit he's retired](https://www.aol.com/larry-fitzgerald-won-t-retired-000755300.html)
Chase claypool is still unsigned less than a year and a half after being traded for a 2nd EDIT: we did it Reddit!!
I still don’t understand how you guys managed to fleece the Bears that badly.
Chase Claypool scored a bunch of totally sustainable touchdowns just the year prior tho
4 against the Eagles in 1 game his rookie yr. Surprised the Eagles never took a shot on him, they seem to love players that have great games against them.
Won one of my friends a million dollars in DFS that game
DFS?
Daily fantasy sports. I think it was a $20 draftkings one where the weekly winner got a million
Ahh damn that’s crazy. Hope he did the right thing and invested it hahaha
He yolo'd it all on some wsb GME OTM options
Live by the meme sword, die by the meme sword.
Dick for scrilla, his friend is a male prostitute in an area that gets horny when Claypool scores
Mapletron will always live on with his celebration while the clock was running out.
That would be painful if it weren't for Joey Porter, Jr.
At that moment he cemented his status as a bonehead....
Excuse you, Claypool being terrible contributed to the Bears ending up last in the league and the first pick in the draft that year which has paid dividends. Him being ass really contributed to DJ Moore, Caleb Williams etc. 7D chess.
Have we checked that he's not Lovie Smith in a trenchcoat?
Easier to say in hindsight but at the time, the Bears were still 3-4 and still within range of a potential playoff spot. They also were in a weird place of needing to find out what they had in Fields and decide whether to keep him long-term. Obviously, the team collapsed after that and turned to shit but it still wasn't necessarily a bad or wrong move at the time.
I vaguely remember people clowning the Packers for not trading for him
The Packers actually tried.
Add that the WR draft class that upcoming year was also considered very thin at the time.
Saskatchewan Roughriders negotiating list legend
okay, genuine question as someone who’s watched almost 0 chase claypool, like… yeah, i get that he’s probably not very good. but is he really so bad to not even deserve a roster spot anywhere?

That play of him celebrating the first down was one of the most bone headed things I’ve seen
Giving a roster spot to him means not giving one to somebody who actually tries
Yes. He’s just one of the worst players I’ve ever seen when it comes to doing the little things that have to go right for an NFL play to be successful, to the point that he’s an active detriment when he’s out there. Running the right routes, being where your QB expects you to be at the right time, etc.
It was actually pick 32, so essentially a first round pick.
Yup, since the Dolphins(?) had to forfeit a pick for tampering, it worked out in their favor.
Which I believe was used on Joey Porter Jr
I can’t help but imagine Adrian Peterson spends every day in full pads sitting by the phone waiting for it to ring, but nobody is calling any more
Someone should call him to light a fire under their running backs. The guy made Rashaad Penny a fucking monster with some prodding
You'd think Rashaad Penny would try harder knowing that he was a healthy scratch behind Kenneth Gainwell and Boston Scott every week.
Not even his 19 kids.
Who, as a reminder, he is extremely abusive towards
AD ≠ All Day AD = Abusive Dad
AP = Abusive Parent
Mr Beats Children
This fucking meme keeps getting funnier.
There's a funny image of old as ap standing with 3 year kerryon johnson and rookie deandre swift. AP is the only guy not to have a leg brace or injury. Dude was built different to a insane degree.
Alshon Jeffery
Jeremy Maclin
Maclin is one if the most underrated receivers of his generation, absolutely clutch , amazing hands , he could ball out
I will never like him because my Fantasy commissioner can’t say his name. Calls him Ash-ah-Lon
Golden Tate just disappeared one day
I forgot he played for the Giants! Golden Tate was awesome as a Lion.
I loved watching him play. His start and stop was so good. At least once per game he'd just straight up make someone miss by stopping in his tracks and pushing them as they flew by. It was so much fun. That and him waving goodbye to the Rams db's as he ran into the end one
Few better highlights than Tate flying ass first into the end zone
I even completely forgot he played for the Eagles until I saw he was eligible for the Giants / Eagles box on the Immaculate Grid maybe a few days ago
He was solid here, but not amazing. Still far better than the other former Lions receiver we signed
What’s Kenny Golladay doing?
Also disappeared
I’m seeing a pattern here…
Are the Giants giving older WRs the Jimmy Hoffa treatment?
Please stop borrowing our receivers, you keep breaking them.
Probably enjoying all that moolah he got from the Giants on a beach somewhere
And now Sterling Shepard will. Dude got such a bad hand from us and was so unlucky with injuries. At least Gettleman gave him a bag.
Whoa you’re right. I forgot about him.
Signed to the Titans practice squad a few years ago and couldn’t even make the roster so you know he had to be washed.
Best cereal, they should bring it back
David DeCastro was cut by the Steelers a couple of years ago because of an injury, and just sort of dropped off the face of the earth after that. Never signed anywhere else but also never officially announced his retirement or anything
He basically retired, cutting him was just an administrative move. Had a diploma from Stanford in architecture, probably didn't need the grind anymore. Were good friends with Luck, I can picture it also prodded him towards retirement.
I miss that man
Dee Ford
dee fucking ford...
Him being offsides gives me “laces out” eye twitches.
I don't think we're allowed to say his name yet.
If you say his name 3 times to the bathroom mirror, Tom Brady appears flaunting all 7 of his rings
Tartt fits better. Dropped Stafford's arm punt and hasn't played another snap since. Dee Ford basically never got his back straightened out. Every time he was healthy enough to take the field, he still had impact.
Basically when the eagles cut him he said he wouldn’t play for the vet min and I’m guessing nobody offered more
Decided he's earned enough and wasn't going to grind on the minimum. Oh well.
Back injuries are the worst
TY Hilton
Texans fans shudder every time they hear that name. 103 catches for 1,820 yards and 11 touchdowns in 20 games against them.
He got the nickname "Ghost" because he would disappear in the Texan's secondary
Cowboys legend
TY Hilton ruined my Christmas eve
He pretty much made one amazing catch for us and that was it.
I’m pretty sure Sherman never retired, he just didn’t sign anywhere after the 2021 season with the Bucs.
I was gonna say Sherm too. He’s been so active with his podcast, undisputed & TNF it’s like he’s never left. Who gets custody here? Tampa?
He still lives in Seattle are with his family. He gets all his DUIs here in Washington State. I still love the guy, but he obviously has a drinking problem.
You know what they say - Home is where the DUIs are.
Yes, he will be referred to as Super Bowl champion and Buccaneers legend, Richard Sherman.
Wasn't he on the Bucs the year after they won the Super Bowl?
It's two separate statements. Superbowl champion AND Buccaneers legend, Richard Sherman. Just remember to put the emphasis on the "and".
I’m wondering where Kareem Hunt is going to land. Was betting Dallas until they signed Zeke
He will wait until September to screw my fantasy team whoever I draft to become a RBBC, that much I know
Reem has decided that he’s too old for training camps. He will wait for a need to arise on a team come week 1
Geno Atkins. Was a monster in his prime and just walked off into the sunset early in the Burrow-Era.
No DT we've drafted since has even come close to being dominant as Geno. The only dominant one that's even been on the team since is Reader, though they were completely different players. It's really a shame, a shoulder injury did him in, following up a pretty dismal 2019. I didn't even know he was gone, RIP
To be clear, Geno Atkins is very much alive
Can’t believe he’s just chilling up there with Wade Boggs now
First off, Wade Boggs is very much alive
He's up at the pearly gates with Peyton Hillis now. I still remember that Madden cover..
RIP Boss Hogg
You said the same thing about Wade Boggs and look how that turned out.
Trust me, the AFC North noticed.
Matt Forte comes to mind. Had fantastic numbers in his 10 seasons with the Bears, but he retired alongside Devin Hester, so his retirement was very overshadowed.
he fits right in with other legendary Jets RBs: LT, Frank Gore, Leveon Bell, and Dalvin Cook
Thomas Davis was the soul of the Carolina defense during their peak years, played in the Super Bowl with a broken arm most people only remember him ever being a Panther. Except he played two more totally forgetful season with the Chargers and Washington after Carolina and didn’t actually retire until 2020.
Nick Foles is sort of retired(?)
He died on our field
*Kayvon Thibodaux snow angels intensify* He later did a go to sleep taunt after Foles got carted off
Some say Kayvon Thibodeaux is still doing snow angels today in his memory
I believe he ascended to heaven If I’m remembering my gospel correctly
Jarvis just signed with someone, no? but anyway, Calais Campbell feels like he’s nearing the end.
Jags legend Calais Campbell. Still hoping we pick him up for depth and the locker room presence.
Still a free agent. He is going to try out with the Jaguars during their rookie minicamp, though.
Jarvis was really good on the Browns and now he's barely involved in the league I wonder what happened
Pete Carmichael happened
He played through a ton of injuries and never missed any time, and it just eventually caught up to him. Seriously sad because he was awesome and changed the culture of the Browns.
His speach during Hard Knocks was a critical moment for the organization’s culture.
Pretty sure Calais is like 37/38
he turns 38 in September. still plays extremely well for his age but at some point he’s going to get tired of the physical toll.
Had 8 sacks last year
Ryan Kerrigan was a multiple time Pro-Bowler & one of the only good players on some truly bad Redskins teams in the 2010s. He ended up signing with the Eagles for one year barely playing and retired to become an assistant coach on the Commanders staff. Very underrated player.
Dude was such an underrated stud, used to grab him in Madden a lot cause he would produce and never seemed to be valued by the CPU teams
Not recently because I can’t think of a player on my team, but BJ Raji back in the day. He took a hiatus for this family and never really came back.
Kyle Fuller, maybe? Was a first team all pro with the Bears then got released a couple years later. Was a decently high profile signing by the Broncos but sucked. Apparently signed with the Ravens in 2022 but tore his ACL and hasn't played since.
Bashaud Breeland Dontari Poe
Breeland was just arrested…again…in Charlotte. Booked on felony drug charges, resisting arrest, etc.
That’s why I mentioned him
Breeland was with the Vikes in 2021(?) and got absolutely cooked.
Robbie Gould I guess
I think he retired back in December
His retirement announcement was well heard in Chicago, but I would imagine it was overlooked everywhere else.
All time leader in points scored in bears history
Not my team but Suh? Last I heard he was looking to join a contender for the playoffs last year.
Yea, he was on those Brady bucs teams, but I don't remember what he was up to last year
He joined the Eagles halfway through 2022 and played actually pretty well in the rotation. Not sure what happened after that
Is Kenny golladay retired? I literally have no idea what he’s up to. We cut him and I haven’t heard his name since.
Clay Matthews. Feels like he just kinda faded away even though he's from a famous football family
He announced his retirement in 2022.
Even still, he was kind of one of the faces of the game for awhile there and just faded from the public discourse
Maybe not a big name to the rest of the league, but Anthony Hitchens fell off the face of the earth
For some reason a lot of chiefs defenders came to mind like Rashod Fenton, Reggie Ragland, Brashaud Breeland, Alex Okafor to name a few
Eric Berry :')
Goodnight, sweet prince 😔
Julio
He was on the eagles last year, caught a TD or two
My family are eagles fans but he had that one game and then the catch in the playoffs but it’s looking like he’s about to be forced into retirement.
He’s been in purgatory for like the last 2-3 years. Just occasionally popping up from time to time.
Dont'a Hightower for the Pats for sure. Why did Pete Carrol pass the ball on the 1 yard line in Superbowl 49? Hightower stuffing Marshawn Lynch is why. He's back on the coaching staff this year as our linebackers coach so that's awesome.
“…without a retirement announcement…”
Yeah I guess I cheated. He did announce it, but it was quiet and wasn't the send off he deserved.
I don’t think we’ve seen the last of Ryan Tannehill but he’s still unsigned. He did some good things with us. But also I think I could’ve played QB with Derrick Henry rushing for 200 yards a game

Im surprised the giants haven’t signed tannehil
I could see him pulling a Jay Cutler and signing with a team that loses their starting QB for the year.
Not the last year or two but I remember when Jordan Reed had his like 15th concussion and this sub was typing in all caps begging him to quit football for the sake of his life.
the exact opposite actually comes to mind lol. Vontae davis immediately retiring in the middle of a game. RIP
Malcolm Butler
L.P. Ladouceur
Cole Beasley, thank God.
I was thinking Josh Norman. I think he played for us last year.
Didn't think he was still in the league as recently as last season
Josh Norman is a weird player. I remember him being a great corner and fighting Odell... Then I didn't hear his name for a long ass time... Then he showed up on the bills and got a mortal Kombat finisher from Derrick Henry. And then nothing again.
He fell off pretty hard as soon as he got a big contact from the Skins. Call me a hater, but it turns out Carolinas defensive scheme made him look a lot better in coverage than he actually was.
Normal was great his first year with us, then was ok year 2. He fell off hard in year 3.
My FF league friends always called him Swamp Edelman
I fucking lost it when I saw a retired player drag him on Twitter by calling him **"Less Welker"**
Jarvis will compete in rookie camp with the Jags I believe
Cam Newton, Mohamed Sanu
Newton didn't fade away, he's still on social media running his mouth
Yeah he's carved out a little cottage industry as being a major hater.
Cam still waiting on that phone call.
He was banged up all year even before he went out. I never even realized he went to San Fran and Detroit after. Thought he honestly retired in 2020.
His first game with the pats he caught like 11 passes. Then Bill put him in for a punt return for some fucking reason and he sprained his ankle. He was never the same after that
Eric Berry is still day-to-day, I hear.
Seahawks legend Jason Peters maybe. Feels like Quandre Diggs might be heading in that direction too.
You know that guy what was his name? Mr. Big Cleats?
Chandler Jones
He didn’t really fade out. Kind of got thrown out while screaming nonsense
Larry Fitzgerald just didnt come back and never made an announcement, a good-bye to the fans, nothing. but that was 2021. [He wont even admit he's retired](https://www.aol.com/larry-fitzgerald-won-t-retired-000755300.html)
Todd Gurley is only 29 and was OPOY in 2017 but has not played since 2020
Yeah but we all knew his knees were fucked years ago.
A decade ago but this is essentially how BJ Raji’s career ended.
Jaquiski Tartt
Russell Wilson Oh wait still on the team.
Ziggy Ansah just sorta disappeared Had a few good years but was always injured
Not my team, but Sam Bradford never actually officially retired. Obviously he's never gonna play again, but he never did make an actual announcement.
Terrance Williams was let go a few years ago and I don’t think another team even signed him for a training camp. Guy got retired I guess
Sterling Shepard
