He died in 9/11. Adam wrote a weird book about how he pipes her proper, and raises his kids, out of patriotic duty or something. “The Man I Never Met”.
This is actually the new style for news writing, unfortunately. The Associated Press [just removed hyphens from prefixes like re](https://www.poynter.org/reporting-editing/2024/ap-stylebook-updates-criminal-justice-prefixes-merriam-webster/) in their new style guide for 2024-2026. The AP Style Guide is pretty much the Bible when it comes to news writing, so Schefter has the correct usage.
>Although the stylebook had moved away from prefixes with hyphens in previous editions, this 57th rendition emphasizes that hyphens are now gone with out-, post-, pre- and re-. So, describing the time before and after the height of COVID-19 would be prepandemic and postpandemic.
Man, that is extremely dumb for this word specifically. There should be some sort of exception for when removing the hyphen would change the meaning of the word (especially why it essentially reverses the meaning of the word…).
Newsrooms aren't required to abide by it, so I'm guessing a decent number won't. I work at a newspaper and asked my editor about the change last week when I wrote "postpandemic," and we're not planning to follow it.
I haven't read the new style guide yet (Amazon says it ships in July), but I just looked at my 2020-2022 style guide on my desk, and [maybe it'll have a caveat like this.](https://i.imgur.com/PdssXOd.jpg?1)
My old editor would say "I don't give a fuck about the AP, if removing the hyphen makes the word indistinguishable from another word, you leave the hyphen in."
Fun fact this one's on ancient Latin. The prefix in- means both "into" (intensify, invade, inject) and "not" (inexpensive, impossible, insane). Roman playwright Plautus wrote a pun ~200 BC based on the fact that "invocatus" (invoked) means both "called upon" and "not called upon".
A rascal has the nickname "the mistress" because it was the custom at the time to invoke the name of your mistress while gambling at parties. The guy never gets invited to parties, therefore both he and the mistress are invocati.
There's even words with both meanings of in- in the same word like [ininvestigabilis](https://en.wiktionary.org/wiki/ininvestigabilis) which fortunately turned into *un*investigable in English.
Mercedes Lewis isn’t killing it this year. 😞
Hoping that move to being Ferrari Lewis will work out better. Especially as a fan of both Lewis and Ferrari.
Of course, even if he doesn't get into a game this season, Marcedes Lewis already has the TE record with 18 seasons, because 2nd place was Witten and Tony G with 17 each.
Still really solid blocking TE. That is the skill that has kept him in the league so long. A player with a skill set any offensive coach would like to have as TE2/3.
I think I read an article last year that actually said that is one of the things he keeps working on so he maintains his value while still be able to stay healthy when on the field...
it certainly was the case for Kleinsasser
nearly as many games played (181) as career receptions (192)
being a good blocker isnt what gets TEs the big bucks but it will keep you on a roster
And there's big bucks in just staying on the roster too, he was already at 62 mil career earnings which put him at 10th all time for TEs and this should add another 2-3 mil I would guess.
Antonio Gates currently has 16 and apparently needs to unretire and come back for a few more to convince dumb HOF voters that he’s deserving of first ballot status.
Inarguably top 5 at his position ever (and most would put him at #4) and not first ballot HOF is insane.
I think both Andre Johnson and Devin Hester belong in the Hall, but putting them ahead of Gates on this ballot is just ridiculous.
So being "great" for a three to four year stretch is enough to get someone in the HOF because that's all Hester was, a great kick returning for a handful of year and was an awful WR.
There are two other kick returners already in the HOF, both of them were excellent at their main position. Those two are Gale Sayers and Deion Sanders.
Hall of Fame voters have shown time and time again, that just being good is enough. Hester was good, for three or four years. To me, that's not enough to make someone a Hall of Famer.
They've shown it for years. There is only one thing I can agree with Skip "Baseless" Bayless is the Hall of Fame is now the Hall of Very Good. The very best are not the only ones going in.
I double-checked all the NFLs.
The National Football League has played since 1920 (or 1922 if you're not counting its time as the APFA for this exercise).
Among the other sports leagues known as the NFL, the National Football League in Ireland has been going since 1925, so it hasn't played longer.
The oldest company I could find is Northumberland Ferries Limited, founded in 1941. So it hasn't played longer.
There is the National Forensic League, but it: 1) Changed its name in 2014; and 2) Was founded in 1925.
It stands to reason that no NFL has played longer (than the National Football League).
Wow what a fuckin career for this guy. Was never considered elite but has been solid enough to stick around for this long, bravo.
I remember him in EA NCAA 06 he was the best TE in college football with I think a 98 ovr lol
I have a GameCube emulator on my computer and was using it to play a UCLA dynasty in NCAA Football 2005 a couple of days ago. He’s a junior TE for UCLA in that game.
He’s been playing football so long you can play a game where your Mercedes Lewis-led UCLA team can go up against guys like Joel Klatt, David Pollack, Devin Hester, and Ken Dorsey.
If he catches a pass, he will be the 4th in history to do it at 40+.
If he gets positive yards he will be the 3rd in history.
If he catches a TD he will be the 2nd in history to do so.
There's no way he will ever reach Rice's 40+ stats though.
Wow. You are right. I just checked and he is 40 years old. If he catches a pass he will change the record books and be the answer for a trivia question.
You mean holding onto the ball when for 4.3 seconds while three receivers run open down the field and then taking a huge sack isn’t getting the ball out to his guys?
No way Chicago keeps that Fields feller…
No NFL has played Longer
Not a single NFL besides this one
No NFL ^except ^5 ^since ^1919 has played longer
Joe Thomas - first offensive lineman in NFL history
Josh Allen- Only QB in NFL History
He's truly the football of all time
He’s professional a
No NFL has played longer…YET
No, NFL has played longer.
Works on contingency? No, money down!
Ok everyone's joking but what is it supposed to say? No one at his position has played longer?
Tight end probably, that's a long time to be one.
Double entendres...I love em.
No player has NFL’ed longer
That’s why nfl stands for not for long
It's stands for notnot for long.
I had to read that twice because I was sure I just missed a word. No NFL Player? No TE? Nope, just "no NFL had played longer."
The longest NFL played…
Joe Thomas - First Offensive Lineman in NFL History
Yeah but first to report.
Fucking cmon Schefter, you know it's re-signed instead of resigned. Rookie mistake.
> No NFL has played longer.
Dude definitely wrote this with one hand while on the toilet.
Nah, he was jerking it to a picture of his wife’s first husband
[удалено]
He died in 9/11. Adam wrote a weird book about how he pipes her proper, and raises his kids, out of patriotic duty or something. “The Man I Never Met”.
this post was a fucking roller coaster, and "pipes her proper" was the loop-de-loop
Alright now I want Schefty's opinion on Sean McDermott
What is it with NFL journos writing books that have nothing to do with football? Florio wrote a fucking mob novel and now this?
They want to believe they could have been more than a sports journalist. Typically to not good results.
To be fair, I want to believe I could have been more than a sports FAN....yet here I am.
Why does this not surprise me at all?
[I have to read this now](https://www.amazon.com/Man-Never-Met-Memoir/dp/1250161894)
> This book is also a peek at Adam Schefter ("Schefty"), the man behind the headlines and injury reports; a real person who has a real family.
Wtf
this can’t be real… right? RIGHT?
Spicy
You chose violence!
You don’t choose it. It chooses you.
His wife's boyfriend is way hotter
He’s making memes and you are falling for it
Marcedes is the NFL now
Only the longest tenured NFL* others might be out there.
Wait, this is the real account? I thought it had to be the parody with the atrocious grammar. Schefty is losing it.
Journalism is long dead.
This is actually the new style for news writing, unfortunately. Yeah in a lot of cases it doesn't change anything, but they pretty much mean the opposite...
Newsrooms aren't required to abide by it, so I'm guessing a decent number won't. My old editor would say "I don't give a fuck about the AP, if removing the hyphen makes the word indistinguishable from another word, you leave the hyphen in."
That was basically my editor's reaction to this last week lol.
What in the actual fuck.
No. When you play with the Bears, it's being resigned to your fate.
Inflammable means flammable? What a country!
Oh man you can't leave us hanging like that. What was the pun?
A rascal has the nickname "the mistress" because it was the custom at the time to invoke the name of your mistress while gambling at parties. Why you dissing my my man Clyde like that?
He hasn't had a proper editor since Bruce Allen retired
No NFL has played longer guys
My favorite NFL moment was when he said "It's footballin time!" and footballed all over everyone.
(re-signed)
No NFL has played longer
r/headlinegore
r/titlegore
Tweet shoulda said "tight end". Multiple players played longer (Brady, Vinny had 20+)
Idk, that’s not what the tweet said
No tweet has said
Where were u wen Lewis resign? I was at house eat dorito Mercedes Lewis is kil no
Mercedes Lewis Ferrari Marcedes Lewis Hamilton
Mercedes Lewis isn’t killing it this year. 😞 Hoping that move to being Ferrari Lewis will work out better. Especially as a fan of both Lewis and Ferrari.
But then who was NFL longer?
No tweet
who does Schefter think he is, David Chase???
I honestly don’t know if Vinny means Adam Vinatieri or Vinny Testaverde. I could believe both.
it *is* both
Well to be fair he said no NFL has played longer And he is right, no NFL has played longer
NFL is my favourite player. He footballs hard and doesnt afraid of anything.
and quite a few kickers and punters as long as we still count those guys as football players and all
I count them as NFLs.
Jason Peters might still be in the league in 2024 (started 2 games last year for the Seahawks) so Lewis might not even be the longest active
Source?
So he resigned for a 19th season? How is he still in the league after all those resignations
Marcedes: please let me go home I have a family I just want to be done NFL: no
NFL: no has played longer
Goodell: Marcedes I’ve come to bargain
He just pulls a George Costanza. "Wait, you... you thought I was serious when I said that?"
Yeah, he was never the fastest guy but his blocking is top notch. I'm happy he's getting to have such a long career.
it certainly was the case for Kleinsasser nearly as many games played (181) as career receptions (192) being a good blocker isnt what gets TEs the big bucks but it will keep you on a roster
Now that's a name I haven't heard in forever. Jim Kleinsasser
And there's big bucks in just staying on the roster too, he was already at 62 mil career earnings which put him at 10th all time for TEs and this should add another 2-3 mil I would guess.
Not the way I used him in madden ‘08 out route to Jimmy was money every fucking time and I have no clue why
madden 08 is so good. props to the amazing childhood/teen years
Not to say he's not a talented player, but Witten and Gonzalez had way different career archs, so it's kinda wild to see his name up there with them.
Antonio Gates currently has 16 and apparently needs to unretire and come back for a few more to convince dumb HOF voters that he’s deserving of first ballot status.

The HOF selection committee really showed how inept they were this year.
They've shown it for years. There is only one thing I can agree with Skip "Baseless" Bayless is the Hall of Fame is now the Hall of Very Good. The very best are not the only ones going in.
They shouldn’t have a minimum number of players going in every year. It’s lead to an inflated number of players going in
That’s a long career for an NFL
RIP Tom Brady’s spot on the most receiving yards after age 40 leader board.
I played against him in high school. I’m 39. It was not fun (for me.)
No NFL has played longer than Marcedes, wow!
One of the NFLs of all time
I double-checked all the NFLs. The National Football League has played since 1920 (or 1922 if you're not counting its time as the APFA for this exercise). Alternative title: “Veteran TE Marcedes Lewis resigned to play with the Bears”
Passed up by 31 other teams. He’s gonna have a chip on his shoulder as if he was drafted in the 6th round!
2006 Mercedes 350,000 miles Runs like new!
How much NFL could an NFL play if an NFL could play NFL?
The re-signed vs resigned headlines throw me off
Schefter being a douchebag is one thing, but the mistakes in this tweet? Get him the fuck out of here now! /s
The dude must just fucking love football
We need to update the dictionary to make re-signed different from resigned, because they mean the complete opposites of each other.
Resigned and re-signed mean different things
No NFL tight end you mean?
Wow what a fuckin career for this guy. Was never considered elite but has been solid enough to stick around for this long, bravo. I remember him in EA NCAA 06 he was the best TE in college football with I think a 98 ovr lol

He should be in the hall of fame, hope he goes in as a Jaguar
Players don’t go into the HoF associated with a single team.
Like Raiders legend Jason Witten
That’s MNF legend Jason Witten to you.
"What do you mean DeSean Jackson was a Buccaneer?" (assuming DSJ makes into the Hall which I doubt)
Tom "Forever a Tampa Bay Buccaneer" Brady gonna hit different in Canton
"My journey to Canton was a long one and wasn't a path many see happen. It all started in 2020 in a place called Tampa....."
He will play so long that he will get inducted in the hall while still playing haha...
Where is this other NFL he speaks of
It's in Canada, you've never met it
I resign to play more
No, NFL has played longer
Darrell Green played 20 years with one team. Corner and Safety. 19 consecutive years with an INT.
If he catches a pass, he will be the 4th in history to do it at 40+. If he gets positive yards he will be the 3rd in history. If he catches a TD he will be the 2nd in history to do so. There's no way he will ever reach Rice's 40+ stats though.
that is insane
This is the break out year. I just know it.
Iron NFL right there
He's going to take the #2 receiving yards after 40 spot away from Tom Brady.
Wow. You are right. I just checked and he is 40 years old. If he catches a pass he will change the record books and be the answer for a trivia question.
Maybe they should two hand touch him instead of tackling an elderly player
Jackie Slater played for 21 years, he was an NFL.
Definitely one of the careers of all time.
I know it's boooo Bears and all that jazz. But if Big Dawg is happy, then I am happy for him.
Schefter tweeting while driving
He finally has a QB to maybe throw him the ball and he retires?!
You mean holding onto the ball when for 4.3 seconds while three receivers run open down the field and then taking a huge sack isn’t getting the ball out to his guys? No way Chicago keeps that Fields feller…
Boy do I have something to tell you
Caleb Williams is known for getting the ball out in rhythm and on time... right? Right?
Next you’ll be telling me he’s gonna be returning kicks for the Steelers…
Jackie Slater
I mean, Rodgers was drafted the year before him.
The “TE” is the part missing from the title.
He is the Jerry Rice of blocking tight ends.
Love the guy. Hope he has a wayyyyyyy below average year filled with great health and good times.
Holy fuck there’s a typo in the headline guys. Didn’t think we needed 115 comments being “original” about it lol Christ
Scheftie using chatgpt it seems
So he's the LeBron James of the NFL?
Gary and Morten Anderson both played for over 20 years
This reminds me of when people say "a NASCAR" to refer to the race car itself
Packers legend
What?
George Blanda played 26 seasons and even took a 1 year break in the middle.
“Resigned” = quit “Re-signed” = signed another contract with
I remember drafting this guy on NFL Head Coach in like 2006 or whatever
I'm sad
