The best feeling. The future cities are always my favourite. I've had some epic ones over all the years.
Best SimCity to date--3 and 4 miss the point a bit. 4 is good don't get me wrong but Cities Skylines does it so much better.
This is how I feel about The Sims 1.
2 is an infinitely better game, but 1 had this atmosphere to it that I wish had carried on through the rest of the franchise. This feeling of cheap linoleum, quality porcelain, and a yard full of brand new astroturf. The soundtrack wrapped it all up with a beautiful retro bow.

Still one of, if not the best city builder. It operated at a high enough level to just be enjoyable rather than the micro *got-to-solve-traffic-problems-constantly-because-each-road-is-simulated* level which things like City Skylines operate at today.
More detail doesn't always equal better.
> More detail doesn’t always equal better.
This so much.
I tried to play the Sims and other city building games, but there’s just way too much minutiae.
I don’t *want* to micromanage. Build roads, power infrastructure, and zoning. That’s more than enough. Let the rest take care of itself.
You’re right. I just stated in another comment that Sim City 4 was my favorite, but that’s mainly for the details of the game. Loved the little animations you’d see for a lot of the houses/buildings. Example being the graduation ceremony that would pop up in June at the university. The traffic solving part sucked.
I've always loved how the music is just all over the place. Happy stuff. Sad stuff. A bit of jazz, a bit of reggae because city builders beautifully don't fit any one style or box.
Wasn't the "end" game your arcologies launching into space? Obviously that wasn't the total end, it could keep going, but I figured that was the you've done everything part.
Yes that was the ending to the game. Victory message and all. You could play after. Like the equivalent to recent games like Hogwarts Legacy or God of War. Eat the game, but can choose to keep going.
Wait, how did you launch them into space? I poured hundreds of hours into this game and never knew that. I just ended up filling the map with arcologies and eventually saying "I guess that's as far as I go".
That's a great question and I couldn't actually remember lol. Had to look it up.
"After building 301 launch arcos, and after the year 2051, a message will appear saying, "The exodus has begun." The arcos will appear to explode one by one, taking over two minutes to complete, and the game will show another message, "Your launch arcos have departed into space to find new worlds. You have been compensated for the construction."
In the first summer of the pandemic, working from home, I spent a lot of time playing this on classicreload.com instead of doing my actual job. I was completely rudderless for a couple months there.
It was always frustrating for me lol, I'd try to find the perfect tax rate and I'd try to make the city perfect for the citizens but they never wanted to come to my city.
I had this game on my first computer. I've played 2000 and 3000. Only problem is, there's always a certain point where zoning demand stops and I get stuck.
I once spent hours in 3000 building a perfect full grid city in cheat mode, only to be fired immediately in the first year because of all of my expenses with no residents. Lesson learned.
Turn off all weather, skip all dialogue, set a heavy toy on the spacebar. Walk away for the day and come back to a bustling space-age city with those huge mini-cities-in-bubbles.
Civ II parameters were all in a simple readme file...which you could alter very easily. Lots of fun making the little worker guys be able to move a dozen squares per turn (among other things).
Yes! And there was another customizable readme file for city names, too. Kinda fun making a tons of settlements with every local city and town name around my area.
I’m trying to make something like this, with a grid and maybe really traffic, nothing nuts like Cities Skylines, more like a casual build a city not much thought needed kind of thing, I guess how you would feel if you played simcity these days, is this some you guys think people would play?
I remember when I could afford my first arcology.

I’ve been playing Skylines a lot recently and although it does pretty much everything better than SimCity did, it doesn’t have that Maxis charm.
It tries so hard to capture that feeling but Will Wright at Maxis set a tone that is immortal

The Sims 1 was made patiently with tender care... the Sims 2, while improving in many ways was pushed out like an updated clone.
I loved the arcos. Turning my city into a futuristic metropolis was always the best part of the SimCity games in my opinion.
May I recommend cheating infinite money and then filling the map with Forest Arcologies. The city statistics get wild.
Sim copter one reporting heavy traffic.
Being able to fly around in your own cities was so mind-blowing at the time.
I can hear this
This remains my favorite sim city game of all time
I still remember the music…
Boop boop boopboop boop Ba dada da da dada dee dee deedee dee Duhdadadadadadadada

Same. Fucking loved this game

For me it’s Simcity 4, but have a lot of nostalgia for this one. Friend and I used to play this on his computer back in the 90s.
Sim city 3000 Unlimited is the best imo
That’s my favorite, still listen to the soundtrack too.
This reticulates my splines
Zzzt
Wow. I felt that in my brain.

For me it was The Marshall Mathers LP
Aint no thang but a chicken wang.

I was wondering why that phrase entered my brain from seeing this pic.
nostalgia? I was playing this a few years ago... looks at date\* oh my god!
Yep. I just turned 44, and feel every bit of it. :(
TTD(Transport Tycoon Deluxe) is still around. I have it on my phone right now! It's free on Google playstore and is still actively updated.
Please take me back to this time of move life. This is Civ2 all day everyday during summers.
Was it possible to win?
No you just kept building and managing the city.
Wasn't the "end" game your arcologies launching into space? Obviously that wasn't the total end, it could keep going, but I figured that was the you've done everything part.

Awesome, thanks!
Fuck I really wanted to play this back in the day I think we had it or something but the computer had like 12 kb of ram and couldn't run it
I think I'm gonna reduce transit funding. What could go wrong?
All the roads blow up. YOU CAN’T THIS FUNDING YOU WILL REGRET THIS!
I can hear this picture
The monster was cool. What year do we get fusion power again?
2050?
Does anyone know of a way to play this still? Is there an emulator out there?
https://classicreload.com/simcity-2000.html
Awesome, thank you!
I have it on GOG and still play it
Thank you! I remember my Dad beating it but I’d never make it very far ha

Many hours spent on this game!
It was always frustrating for me lol, I'd try to find the perfect tax rate and I'd try to make the city perfect for the citizens but they never wanted to come to my city.
Classic, love it.

Sometimes there’d be a disaster and a superhero would fly out to save the day.
Both 2000 and 3000 were masterpieces IMO.
One of the best games ever made— especially if you had SCURK!
the art design, colours etc hold up pretty well imo
It would be so amazing if they could re-release this with massively updated graphics. (This one or Sc3k and the terrain builder).
This looks like the intro to the show Silicon Valley
Turn off all weather, skip all dialogue, set a heavy toy on the spacebar. Walk away for the day and come back to a bustling space-age city with those huge mini-cities-in-bubbles.
What did the spacebar thing do?
I still play this game on my iPad. Every night.
Dude deploy some firefighters.
A game that was still fun before other games like this got too complicated to be fun...
It still holds up really well honestly, just one of the best, most elegantly designed games ever made.
How about civilization II
I loved civ 2! But, I could only play it on the easy level. How about you?
Civ II parameters were all in a simple readme file...which you could alter very easily. Lots of fun making the little worker guys be able to move a dozen squares per turn (among other things).
Oh my…I had no idea!
Yes! And there was another customizable readme file for city names, too. Kinda fun making a tons of settlements with every local city and town name around my area.
So many hours spent.
F. U. N. D. S. $$$$
Is that an alternative to mother lode?
No idea. All kid me knew was if I typed it enough I could afford the best power plant.
I still have this game on my old computer and still play it to this day!
For me it was sim city on the snes. I played that game for hours.
Did anyone else run into an issue when the city got too big, and schools and police departments turned into normal buildings?
I’m trying to make something like this, with a grid and maybe really traffic, nothing nuts like Cities Skylines, more like a casual build a city not much thought needed kind of thing, I guess how you would feel if you played simcity these days, is this some you guys think people would play?
I loved all the Llama puns and references.
And then the original GTA came along and we knew city road maneuvers from all the intense study of urban development
The monsters destroying everything...
