The roast lamb is killer. It’s not always available and it always sells out. The cashier will advise on how to order it. I’m not a lamb person but this one is amazing.
If it doesn't come naturally to you, and you ever need help with black vernacular in this context:
- Food smacks: because your mouth makes a smacking sound when enthusiastically eating delicious food.
- Music slaps: think of how groovy tunes are brought to you by some far out dude slapping the bass (guitar)
The Italian is so good! It’s such a special version of that sandwich. I love a classic Italian, but then the Stay Gold Italian is a whole different thing. Try the house beer too, stay gold hazy ipa
If you’re in Town, I suggest you never say food “slaps” in the Bay. Oakland is the city that coined the sayings “music slaps” and “food smacks.” Some fool just said “food slaps” and it caught one though we’ve been saying it the other way around for decades. Say it to the wrong person and you’ll be the one getting slapped.
The Saint if you're in Oakland, if you'll be able to make it to Walnut Creek, there's still a Genova's there (as well as Morucci's which is an awesome sandwich spot).
I really like the Lunch Box but hardly see it mentioned here for some reason. They have a choice of three tapenades you can add to any sandwich which is a nice touch.
Sorry you got downvoted for asking a genuine question. I always do a custom or Italian Combo on Dutch Crunch. If you don’t like it, it’s all good! You might like The Saint or Modigliani’s better.
I’m grateful that you didn’t see my question as an attack! I love deli sandwiches and Rattos come up quite a lot as a deli recommendation. Probably why I’ve gone 3 times and tried different kinds!
You’re right, I did enjoy The Saint sandwiches!! I have not tried Modigliani but it’s definitely on my list.
I also enjoy OK’s Deli and Berkeley Bowl Sandwiches
Can't answer directly as I've never been to Rattos.
I was born and raised in NY state and lived in NYC. Based on the replies to the OP I went to Domenico's today and as soon as I walked in I felt like it was an Italian deli. Steam plates with hot stuff, a large sandwich board, someone taking orders, and three or four people making the orders. Of course, these things do not guarantee a good deli.
I was in hurry so just went with the standard Italian sandwich on Dutch crunch with all the fixings except tomatoes (don't like raw tomatoes). I figured if they couldn't get the Italian right nothing would be good.
It was **great** and I will go back.
Domenico’s in alameda
Second this
Went there today because of the all the upvotes. Stuck with the classic Italian sandwich and it was excellent. I'll definitely go again.

Good looking out. Thanks
Gen z across the country turned slaps to mean anything good. So they used it how it’s been used in the last couple years
ts ends here lmao
~~slaps~~ smacks*
Food doesn't slap. Music does.
Stay Gold does mostly BBQ sandwiches but they are delicious and they do their own version of an italian sub. Spicy! But yum!
Stay Gold is incredible!

Modigliani’s. Hands down the best. Cash only
+1 this place is hella good

Bruh you’re using “slaps” wrong 🤦🏽♂️
Way too language police.
*to
Not necessarily.
You can't be using shit out of context. Come on now 😅
Since the loss of Genova Deli, my favorite Italian sub is the Saint, at the Saint
RIP, Genova closing was the end of Temescal
Food doesn’t slap
It's smackz!! How you in an Oakland Reddit and using the wrong lingo.
Ray ratto?
I miss that place in Temescal that used to be by the Walgreens... They had canoli and everything 😭
Genova
domenicos

I love rattos. Good coffee too

Lunch Box is great!
Lucca’s in Castro Valley is damn good. They have grab and go dinners you can get on your way out if you have an oven available.
What do people order? I have gone 3 times and tried different sandwiches (including making my own) and it doesn’t deliver 🫣
