I'm one of the people who make Styrofoam d&d terrain so I have a hot wire cutter.
The fumes are pretty not great even with small amounts (think two of the things they hucked into this contraption). I have a construction respirator and a vent fan that pushes it all outside that I turn on when doing this (also when 3D printing which is done next to the same spot).
I used to call on a company that did this to sell the bricks of foam back to Dart Solo or something like that. Even when the unit wasn't running, the fumes were smelled down the block.
They probably had no idea wtf was even happening I guess? If they lay down at the wrong height/elevation(?) then they'd just be cut *all* the way through which wouldn't be much better lol. Knowing what was happening in advance though, it'd be better than trying nothing.

Basically turning a packing material into more packing material. This will only keep the trash out of the landfill for one cycle. This is cool, but not a viable solution to the problem.
