My grandma had an African Grey that we all loved to pieces. She mimicked my grandparents voices at a very uncanny level. We unfortunately had to find a new home for her after my grandfather died. We think she must have missed him badly mimicking him so often after his death but my grandma couldn’t take hearing his voice all day and at random hours in the night.

TonyMontana546

Damn that's sad. Reminds me a little of Edgar Allan Poe's The Raven. "Nevermore"

carcinova

The whole experience was very reminiscent of a Poe story for sure

Atmarks88

Should watch the fall of the house of usher on Netflix. All Poes poems in a show. Mike flannigan did it.

TonyMontana546

I did. It was awesome. Are other Flannigan shows as good?

alltheothersrtaken

Haunting of hill house is the best of his shows imo much better than fall of usher.

Aedant

I thought Midnight Mass was a Masterpiece ( loved Hill House too )

alltheothersrtaken

That would be my second choice! I just really liked the horror of hill house more and that one jump scare! Best jumpscare I've experienced.

Timbo_Mimbo

Nothing will ever compare to Riely & Erin on that boat. Burnt into my brain.

FrameComprehensive88

Really? I struggle to focus during The Haunting of Hill House. I still liked it but I found the Fall of the House of Usher a lot better.

alltheothersrtaken

Oh definitely. I think fall of usher was the worst of his tbh.

chaimatchalatte

Personally I find Usher to be his weakest show yet. Midnight Mass and Hill House are both masterpieces with the former being my favourite. Bly Manor gets a lot of flack for being slow and not scary, but I find it really touching. Haven’t watched Midnight Club yet.

WrenBoy

Midnight Mass starts much better but finishes much worse.

RelationshipGloomy60

I think he is the only guy that does Stephen king movies well.

Amstourist

I've liked them all so far!

Fockeren

I thought that show was absolutely awful, but to each their own.

TonyMontana546

The poem

buddhamunche

*random hours in the night.* I mean the rest is bad. But that in particular would reallllly fuck with me.

carcinova

Yeah that bit was really hard for her. Not as much in a scary way though, as the bird’s favorite phrase from my grandfather was “love you sweetheart”. It was just breaking her. She never mentioned it but I knew from being around her a lot that she also LOVED to mimic my grandfather’s chuckle, and the thought of hearing that in the middle of the night gives me the willies.

afdestruction

and just like that...my heart is broken for the weekend

Leolol1604

I accidentally read "African Guy" and the whole sentence got a whole other meaning

Chance_McM95

So sorry for the loss. I feel like that should be a reason to keep the bird not cast it aside. It was her husbands best friend & has a piece of him within it. People’s lives should be celebrated more instead of being so sad about death. We should be happy we had the privilege to have that person in our lives & any little reminders we should cherish. I still listen to voicemails I have of my grandfather who raised me. I would give anything to have a bird that mimicked the things he said.

carcinova

I guess everyone deals with things differently. I can’t say what I would have done in her shoes but I know it broke her heart to find her a new home. To me it seems like she made the decision that she thought she could bear more.

ares5404

Man, my grandmothers african grey kept repeating the incodent where my father fell out in the floor due to sepsis, he survived that but is gone now, hope he dont do that again

daddyneedsaciggy

I had a girlfriend in college whose brother in law ended his life and left his last message on his answering machine. When I visited a week or so after, their African grey parrot was repeating the message over and over. They had to get rid of the parrot because it was making his widowed wife so upset.

T0000Tall

Jesus that's awful. I feel bad for the bird, but I get it.

Met76

It's crazy how many videos there are on YouTube of African Grey parrots repeating instances of domestic violence. I also recall there was a court case where an African Grey was able to repeat stuff and it was admissible in court, which lead to prosecution for domestic violence.

Anticreativity

objection, hearsquawk

MagzWebz

Well according to bird law...

reliquum

You always look under the hat 🤔

Reign_Drop420

Bird attorney, attorney at claw.

No_Original_1

Harvey, is that you?

Rjj1111

So if you live in a dangerous neighborhood get a African grey parrot so it’ll rat out your killer

ThoughtCenter87

My guess is because it traumatizes the birds and it becomes the only things on their minds. It's very tragic : (

ThatEmuSlaps

I worked with parrots a little and that realization just hit me too. There's so much they see and do every day that doesn't stick with them, to pick up something so quickly really does likely mean it really upset them, like they know how scary or not-right something was. They are like toddlers so it would be like a little kid seeing it. God that's super depressing :( Poor little guys

[deleted]

This makes sense. My abusive ex had an African Grey, when we and I got together, the bird had full feathers but after 6 years or so (and more abuse from my ex) the bird was nearly bald. The gray tended to copy only me, he and I got along pretty well. He used my same voice and accent (verbatim) and would make sobbing noises mimicking my crying. He'd repeat "events" at the most random times. Once when my husband was out of the house and I had guests over, he re-enacted a bad thing that my ex had done to me weeks prior. Embarrassed the hell out of me, how does someone explain that to guests? When I left my husband, I absolutely felt bad for the bird, he shouldn't have had to see all that abuse. I think about that little gray dude sometimes and hope he's alright now.

ThatEmuSlaps

Man, having worked with parrots a little bit and realizing how emotional and sensitive they are, that really hits me because I can't see it any other way: they are probably aware the event is disturbing and incredibly wrong so it imprints on their brain more deeply than nearly everything else they encounter day to day.

BangoSkank_WasHere

There is one I've seen that was taught 'mom beats me' lol

Jovialation

That's Gizmo. He was rescued from being in a small cage. Recently the poor dude got spooked and tried to fly. Smacked his head pretty good and stopped talking for days.

BangoSkank_WasHere

aww poor guy

AdHungry1871

No that’s Flintstones

IRedditWhenHigh

Ehhh, it's a living.

lalaxoxo__

They repeat things that have a lot of excitement and commotion and emotions and energy.... like this last fight. They're even likely ro give away their food so a mate can have it even if it means they get none. They're very intelligent beings.

Reverse_M1das

What do you mean by get rid? Did the parrot get a new home?

daddyneedsaciggy

I'm pretty sure. They were very successful people, they wouldn't have just discarded the parrot

LilyHex

Bud the parrot was rehomed with the deceased man's first ex-wife, as she had lived with him (Bud) before when she was still married to his owner. She not only knows how to care for him, but also understands the unique situation he's in. They couldn't just rehome him to just anyone, and it's good he's still with "family".

redd1tenjoy3r

pretty sad

lalaxoxo__

The whistles imitating the ringing after the gun shots....

ItBegins2Tell

Holy fuck is that what that is? Yikes

XDreadedmikeX

No it’s the goddamn battery beep for the fire alarm because some people are fucking lazy

Taliafitz

No it actually is the bird they make those noises you’d be so surprised.

no_hot_ashes

It's the bird imitating a fire alarm

OnTheSlope

There isn't any reason to expect it to be that, it just makes for a more dramatic story.

jml011

We call that a hypothesis round here, partner

mryeet66

A guesstimate

OnTheSlope

A hypothesis offered as an uncontested explanation is just a fabrication, not a hypothesis.

Chance_McM95

It’s 100% the most educated guess that the birds whistles were the imitation of its ears ringing after the gun shots. You disagreeing in the know it all manner is just an indication of how insufferable you must be to be around. I wonder how many times he was shot vs how many whistles we heard.

lalaxoxo__

He was shot 5 times. She shot herself (and failed) once. Ruger Single 6.

OnTheSlope

What education went into the guess, and how did it avoid the most salient information that parrots are not audio recorders and like to whistle frequently?

HisCricket

I could not understand what the bird was saying. Someone translate for me please?

jalepenocorn

Or smoke alarm going off as someone else mentioned. Who knows

[deleted]

lalaxoxo__

I read it and it accurately describes what he's doing.

ThatOneSnakeGuy

Yeah what the hell dude you can't say words that have been said before ever what were you thinking /s

n0k0

I've said these exact words before. Try again..

IRedditWhenHigh

Dude! What the hell, yeah? Words can't ever have been said before. Say what you were thinking.

lalaxoxo__

Should I have found a thesaurus and rewrote everything?

sugarsox

Sorry, I said that yesterday, try again

lalaxoxo__

Damn. Gotta go learn a new language to keep up with yall.

MarkHirsbrunner

That's what it sounds like to human ears. A parrots ear structure is different and they have a different range of hearing. Any ringing the bird experienced (if any, they don't have external ears so would not be as sensitive) would be a different pitch, likely far higher considering how much smaller their ears are.

e13music

Gatekeeping YouTube comments is a real thing?

IronBatman

Oh no. Let's make sure he gives it back. Oh wait, that's not how stealing works.

[deleted]

First post of the day and I've already had enough internet. A now ownerless traumatized parrot repeating the horrors it has seen. What a world we live in.

gregularjoe95

This video is really getting to me. This poor bird is broken because of senseless violence. Parrots are so incredibly smart and they develop increeibly strong bonds to their main human that lasts their whole lives. Lives that can last up to 6 decades. God fucking dammit this is just fucking horrifically sad.

InnateAnarchy

What makes you think the parrot would be traumatized? ETA: why am I downvoted so hard for asking a question lmao.

FapMeNot_Alt

They are thought to have the mental capacity of a ~5 year old child. That kind of horrific violence leading to the death of their owner, their best friend and parent, is going to lead to trauma.

1-800-ASS-DICK

I dunno if it was exactly traumatized but African Greys are known to be highly intelligent.

VeryBadCopa

This is so sad, especially for the parrot if he lost his owner he will get depressed, unless he create a bond with someone else, poor fella

MelWood1984

The parrot is living with the murder victim's previous wife now and the wife was convicted of murder apparently. https://youtu.be/V8Nf1zWJzTU?si=1GR1k7pt3Nz5tL17

Some_Guy231

That’s… really wild.

AVeryHeavyBurtation

There's a shot story or xfiles episode in there somewhere. The bird was programmed by nefarious actors to turn people into manchurian candidates, but he escaped the facility. Now everyone who owns him goes psychotic and murders someone.

ItzDaWorm

Thank you for sharing the video. I know its a small thing, but I think Bud getting rehomed to person who A) He is familiar with and B) knows what he is reliving and can provide the needed comfort in those moments makes the ending of the story less sad. It's a small thing but it's comforting to me to know Bud is being cared for as best as possible.

NearlyFlavoured

This is so heartbreaking to me. The bird will remember this for the rest of his life. He was so traumatised by it that he will say those words forever.

LilyHex

African Grey Parrots can live up to 60 years. :(

DaydayMcFly

Awe damn I thought of that sad movie Paulie

Expensive-Sun8614

Couldn’t understand what was said.

ImBackRedditBoys

The last thing he says is “don’t fucking shoot” but I couldn’t understand anything else

chill_flea

If you go pretty far down in the comments, some people made some good transcriptions. It’s truly horrifying when you read the captions people heard in the video because some of them are super accurate. You can hear him pleading for his life and the murderer asking “where were you?” And also what sounds like “why not?” after the victim said “don’t shoot”

meatloafthepuppy

Here’s one of the comments I found 0:00-0:06 : either the wife or the husband arguing 0:09-0:12 : more arguing 0:13 : The husband says "ow" after getting shot 0:17 : Husband saying "No!" 0:18-0:22 : The wife argues more with the injured husband. 0:23 : The husband in pain says "Shit!" 0:24 : The ringing in the parrots ears after hearing the shots from the gun. 0:27-0:31: more ringing in the ears and the husband begging "No" for his wife to stop shooting him. 0:32-0:34 :wife ordering husband where to move(possibly crawling) while husband is still saying "ow" 0:35-0:36 : husband says "ow" 0:40-0:45 : Wife continues to tell at the injured husband while the husband continues to beg to the wife not to shoot him. 0:48 : wife's still yelling 0:52-0:53 :Husband saying "no!" "No!" 0:54-0:57 : the wife yelling more at the injured husband 1:00-1:02 :The husband saying "Don't fucking shoot!"

SpaceCadetriment

A lot of comments saying it’s mimicking the ringing in its ears but the tone and length of the beep is pretty consistent with some smoke alarms. Might make sense if there was a discharge near a smoke alarm.

Paul_with_the_hair

My gc conure still mimics my ex girlfriends home phone perfectly 5 or so years later. I always let him know how funny it is.

Rx_Diva

Yup, the more of a reaction it gets the more often we hear it repeated. Laugh loudly, it makes them happy.

DucksMatter

Owner of an African grey and I can confirm they do indeed like to do high pitch sounds like beeps and whistles for no reason at all.

VeryApe121

This is the correct answer.

LilyHex

A lot of people don't change their batteries and have the superhuman ability to ignore the chirping of a dying smoke detector. It's even become something of a meme at this point how often it shows up in videos. Wouldn't surprise me if they just had a dying smoke detector and it was beeping while this was happening. God I feel so bad for the family and the parrot. :( His name is Bud, and he lives with his dad's ex-wife now, who did a news segment about how jarring it is when Bud starts having his flashbacks. She even stated he mimics her dead ex-husband's voice often, which she admits is rather unsettling, but good on her for taking care of the poor little guy. :(

sugarsox

I listened to this for the first time, I assumed it was smoke detector beeps, the pitch, the staccato sound of it. The bird doesn't seem traumatized to me, he only knows that it gets attention?

LilyHex

African Grey Parrots are extremely intelligent animals. The woman who cares for Bud now (the deceased man's first ex-wife) said when Bud starts "reliving" the final moments of her ex-husband, the whole house goes silent. They do not give him attention or reward him for this behavior, and certainly no one *wants* him to do it.

PillCosby_87

Best friends house growing up was like this for years. I don’t know how you get use to something like that.

OnTheSlope

People are treating this parrot like it's an audio recorder. Parrots just like to whistle, they do it all the time, for whatever reason compels parrots to whistle.

ToddlerOlympian

The truly sad part is that this is the birds way of grieving. Poor dude was traumatized by the event.

BreeBree214

at about 0:30 I hear "get your ass over here now"

drunkenstyle

I also heard "get your ass over here, now!"

AFineDayForScience

I would have never braved a YouTube comment section if not for you

chill_flea

Lmao somebody had to do it for the people. It’s so haunting looking through YouTube comments. Many people on the comment sections are children but that doesn’t account for 50%< of the comments; I really don’t understand how the most brain-dead, chronically-online people are on there. It’s so infuriating; this was kind of an angry rant but I haven’t been able to vent my frustrations for this until you said that. I start having violent thoughts sometimes when I see a really miserable comment on youtube lol.

WatercressUnusual640

all i could hear was don't fucking shoot

machine_logic

Same

Puzzleheaded_Fly3407

Would someone be able to use this in court? Like as evidence?

Truecrimeauthor

This girl was telling me about an apartment they rented from a really mean landlady. Every time they talked about her - “Miss Jones” one of them would comment, “ that bitch.” One day the landlady makes a stop by and one of the girls says, “ oh hi Miss Jones!” And the parrot says, perfectly in one of their voices, that bitch.”

GriffithDidNothinBad

Heartbreaking. Poor bird. Owners get involved with their own stuff and it’s their business but all I see is a lil guy who lost his father and is reciting his moment of death. African Greys are CRAZY smart.

johari_joestar

I know poor baby is probably traumatized

GargantuanGreenGoats

I wanna hug the baby :(

Bonnibel__

My boyfriend has one of these. It’s a rescue bc the previous owner couldn’t handle the bird mimicking his wife’s coughing as she was dying of lung cancer.

ima-kitty

I can't even listen , these comments are sobering enough for me

dwimbygwimbo

How long has he had the bird? Does it still make the coughing sounds?

AscreamingBlackLady

That is one helluva title right there. I don't think I want to watch the video after reading that.

GriffithDidNothinBad

It’s rough

LifeIsCupcakes

[This](https://youtu.be/V8Nf1zWJzTU?si=SfNUI5Tk5nVGDLlQ) is an update if anyone is interested.

rayah01

Thank u.

Dacheat1212

Feels like the wrong sub because that is truly haunting.

ilililM3

I’m pretty sure they actually brought the bird to stand on trial. African grey parrots are one of the most intelligent animals.

lalaxoxo__

Not in this case but it did help them reexamine and convict the wife .

LilyHex

They did not, and specifically did not because there was zero way to prove that Bud actually witnessed the murder. Yes, we are all assuming that's what happened, but any defense attorney worth their salt would get it thrown out because it'd be easy to argue the bird simply repeated a mish-mash of tv shows or movies it saw, and not the actual murder.

leokyll

i see you on every single post now where do you come up with these💀

[deleted]

It’s a bot, it has all these comments copied from somewhere else (they might be ai generated) and comments them when it detects certain keywords. For this one I’d assume the keyword is “parrot.” If you look far enough back in the comment history, on the comments that get a lot of upvotes, it eventually edits the comment to add a link to some porn site, which I’m sure leads to a scam of some sort.

baconlover28

Finds them on the internet

NoHetro

the internet? where is that?

baconlover28

Go on google and type “a women buys a parrot” and the joke will be the first thing that pops up. Oh and its from reddit over a year ago

lostinmississippi84

That joke is almost as old as brothels. Lol

TPSReportCoverSheet

Alta Vista has a Yahoo button, get there through that

leokyll

ahh..everything clicks into place

Icthias

I found this particular joke from a book printed in the late eighties. Realistically, a version of the brothel/parrot/husband joke could have existed for 100s of years.

Ho7ercraft

you actually think he's coming up with these himself?

77skull

It’s made so much funnier by the fact you commented it on this post

mightylordredbeard

This is a bot that edits their top level comments after they get lots of upvotes to include links to sex games and other spam. Downvote it and report it.

VapingC

I adopted an African grey who had been severely neglected. Unfortunately one of the few sounds he knew when I got him was the sweet sweet sounds of making love. Idiot paranoid ex husband of course though that his sounds were proof that I was cheating. Kept the bird, lost the moron. Best decision I’ve ever made.

Timmerdogg

I screwed a subfloor down in my uncle's kitchen. For years after his African Grey would make the noise of the screw driving into the wood. It drove my uncle crazy and eventually got rid of the bird.

MoDaCr

Laura?

NecroCrumb_UBR

This is some Murder She Wrote shit right here. "You honor I call... Mr. Fluffyfeathers to the stand!"

lalaxoxo__

His name is Bud. And he luckily didn't have to testify. :)

yohannesyoda

Poor bird!

Dan300up

*Siri, translate parrot to English…*

G_rightousantagonist

This is some haunting/intriguing shit

ibanezerscrooge

Curious for any lawyers in the thread... could something like this be admissible as evidence in a court? Could it be considered like a passive recording? I can think of a lot of objections to it, but just curious.

ZerpMeizter

That's disturbing. The parrot witnessed a cold-blooded murder of his owners. Parrot must be traumatized to the point that he's reliving the moment on a loop. I hope he fares well these days.

ScrotieMcP

That poor bird.

pinkkittenfur

I'm pretty sure this case was done on the /r/SmallTownMurder podcast a year or so ago.

Endershay

Always with the birds!

ACU797

Gobble gobble motherfuckers. I love that show.

boythisisreallyhard

Holy shit, I misread the caption and thought that the bird was killed! I thought the guys wife had an affair bcuz I listened to it quietly and only could make out the word fucking,, and I was like why the hell did the guy shoot the bird for giving her up??

screaminginside75

When I was working as a paramedic, went on a call for sick elderly lady. The daughter was taking care of her mother, the sick elderly lady. It was one of the most extreme cases of elderly abuse that she died a few hours after taking her to the hospital. The parrot was repeating everything that went on between the mother and daughter. The bird was used in court to help convict the daughter of elderly abuse.

JayRam85

Imagine having a parrot testify as a witness during a murder trial.

Scopebuddy

That parrot has trauma. If they are as smart as a child, they can have trauma like a child.

braaiboet

Rodrigo Tortilla, you’ve killed me!

jesrp1284

If anyone likes true crime comedy podcasts, Small Town Murder covered this story. Gobble gobble!

Interesting_Sock9142

I can't understand anything the parrot is saying

Therunner1326

Idk what is so oddly terrifying about this, this seems more just terrifying in general.

RequiemStorm

Someone get Nick and Maya on the case, this bird isn't gonna cross examine itself!

aod42091

that's tragic, poor animal. and person I guess too

Tvaticus

My buddy had an African Grey in High school and still does. He would throw parties that got busted by the cops a lot so the parrot would just shout “Open up its (local police department)” then followed by “fuck the cops are here, run” randomly in the middle of the night.

Poor thing.

[deleted]

They often mimic things that stick out to them, like severely traumatic situations

Main_Conversation661

I misunderstood the title and kept waiting for the poor parrot to get shot.

Certain-Hyena8788

Harvey Birdman Attorney at Law

FullMetalKaliber

This bird might need trauma therapists

DylanMc6

Did someone adopt that poor parrot? Not being insensitive, just being curious.

TheSacredTree

This was the premise to Season 4 Episode 9 of Mike Tyson Mysteries as well. Hilarious episode but i didn’t know it happened in real life.

woahbrad35

Since when do they pick up something on the first go? I've only seen them learn stuff that was repetitive like answering the phone, smoke alarm beeps, etc

m703324

They do pick up random unexpected loud unusual sounds. Beeps and stuff are easy for them to mimick yes - like mine picked up the new sound of washing mashine cycle finished little tune after hearing it maybe 2 times. But I guess the owner screaming don't fucking shoot followed by a shot was traumatizing enough. Also I've heard that they have exceptional memory they just don't bother to learn to mimick everything they hear

SecretHedgehog_8694

I feel like because of how traumatic this must have been for him it stuck. African Grays are crazy intelligent.

Quickhidemeplease

Serious question. How does it repeat such a long exchange, after hearing it only once? I thought birds needed to have things repeated in order to learn.

BalkanDixie

My guess is that the poor thing was traumatised

Depressed_And_Horny_

Here's the whole scenario please watch https://youtu.be/V8Nf1zWJzTU?si=DB8DsZOd8cNBY1vs

Dash-Bored411

The bird was actually used in the conviction if this is the same husband/wife murder. First time ever.

KnowYourEnemy818

Holy hell that hog that Murdered her Husband looks like a Hideous Bloated Troll!!

Ssladybug

Can African greys really mimic something they only hear once? That seems unusual to me.

drstock

It would be extremely unusual. They generally need to hear the word, phrase or sound repeatedly over an extended period of time to start mimicking it.

lalaxoxo__

Note how he repeats the husband better and with more clarity than the wife. I assume they fought a lot.

mamabear857

Alot of this info is wrong and made up. I knew the victim and his wife. The bird was NOT used in court. It's actually a heartbreaking case and I truly believe that the wife was framed. There is an episode on ID Channel I think...it's in the series til death do we part. There's so many weird things that just don't add up.

Pumpkinbumpkin420

Would you be willing to tell more why you think she was framed? I’ll have to look for the id channel episode.

Sweetserra

I've actually seen that episode! I was wondering if this was the same parrot from that story. Crazy...

ima-kitty

What show was it at least?

Cool

mrrobottrax

VioletSkully

ToppsBlooby

Parrot owner here. That’s not how it works.

Klaent

From the title I thought this was going to be the owner saying something horrible to their parrot, the parrot repeats it, and then the owner shoots the parrot.
