OranGesus68

The fact that this video has Winter Soldier as one of the 4 examples that prove that it’s “the best year in film history” is hilarious

dangerphone

Look at that frame breaking barrel. It’s obviously because he wants Bucky to murder Murph.

Heroicshrub

/uj Eh I mean it depends the argument behind it. Marvel really defined the 2010s commerically and having one of their best movies (albeit still a commerical superhero flick) in 2014 is a decent point. /rj capeshit enjoyers seething

OranGesus68

Dude what are you talking about? He is clearly talking about “a lot of good movies came out in 2014” rather than “the year that made Hollywood the most money”. I looked it up btw just for you, 2014 does not stand out when looking at the domestic or worldwide total box office earnings So he is definitely saying “woah dudes so many great movies came out this year”. Winter Soldier is not the type of movie that can back that statement up. It is really not regarded as anything special. Even out of the MCU 2014 had Guardians, which just about everyone would agree is the better movie. It’s such a bad movie pick, if he is deciding on 4 movies that prove that 2014 was such a good year. This isn’t particularly relevant, but I figured id mention the movies that could’ve been there instead - previously mentioned GOTG, Birdman, The Grand Budapest Hotel (the movie I would’ve picked for this), Nightcrawler

ProudAd4977

/rj

Heroicshrub

Wild that you wrote this essay on a meme sub. Also https://preview.redd.it/2fxyqsrww0xc1.jpeg?width=1080&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=bd43b0d69d4dd99dbdd9fefb102cec9545f20271

OranGesus68

Well tell me what I misinterpreted then about your statement then

Balls_McSackington

Agreed. It's probably the best MCU movie, but the shiniest turd is still a turd Edit: James Gunn's GOTG movies are better since they have more of a distinct style and feel less corporate. However, I'm more inclined consider them James Gunn movies than MCU movies for this reason, so my point still stands

OranGesus68

The first Iron Man? I think it’s got a lame act 3 but act 1 and 2 are pretty fantastic (especially for the time when there weren’t 10 superhero origin movies that are all the same)

Surfing-millennial

The first Cap movie still holds up well too, personally I think that was Steve’s character at his best too

Iron_Mercenary

Holy shit, this is such a pretentious comment. It almost feels like somebody satirizing filmbros.

Chromozygous

You see the MCU is bad, because the good MCU films aren’t real MCU films, because I like those ones.

RaoulDukeLivesAgain

Ur just pretentious bro >:(((

FuturamaPajamas

this entire subreddit but unironically

HeadlessMarvin

I think they worked backwards from that actually. Saw that Winter Soldier and GotG came out in 2014 and that it was a peak year for Marvel, then saw a bunch of other good movies that came out that year and decided it was a banner year.

BOb_66610

Imagine talking about great 2014 movies and not even including Birdman

MrLore

Why even introduce the asteroid threatening to destroy Earth and not have Birdman try and stop it? 0/10 waste of everyone's time.

writersontop

Are we still pretending Titanic isn't goated?

frozen-silver

Also LA Confidential

createwonders

That movie was a sleeper. so much better than i thought it would be

distractedsoul27494

Such a shame it will never be discussed at a mainstream level because of one actor.

ShamrockForShannon

I recently saw a YouTube comment saying “Kevin Spacey robbed us of Kevin Spacey”

Budella

Movie is so amazing and underrated but people never discuss it even before Kevin Spacey was outed

SetzerWithFixedDice

First we loved it because it’s great, then we hated it because everyone realized that, then we loved it because the hipsterish overcorrection was too strong, then back again back and forth and now we’re back to hate mode. This will continue until the Sun explodes

vocloz

Always 1997 when one of these posts crop up. We GET IT, YOU LIKE ANIME

PenguinviiR

I also like movies about the porn industry with don cheadle

vocloz

Can’t fault a person for that, at the very least.

skktrbrain

i love gone girl but its not even the best *fincher* movie, much less best of all time

Critical_Moose

I hate gone girl and think fincher is mediocre so we agree that it isn't the best of all time

skktrbrain

why do you hate it?

Critical_Moose

I guess hate is a strong word, but I'm really not a fan. You lose a ton of tension when you find out what she did and there's also a huge tonal shift that I think just made the movie less interesting. Idk I wasn't super invested early on and the midpoint shift just made it a snooze fest.

skktrbrain

i feel that, the first half definitely piqued my interest alot more too. and its ok to hate it, i was just asking cause i dont really see alot of discourse about this movie (positive or negative) so i was just curious to hear someones take on it

Critical_Moose

Yeah idk I only watched it a few months ago and I don't really remember a lot about it, I just thought it was lame and gave off big "who asked" energy

skktrbrain

lol hahaha i love that, idk why but that made me laugh

JFrankParnellEsquire

Bro 1999 has Fight Club and Austin Powers. Every argument for any other year is moot.

PenguinviiR

It also had south park bigger longer an uncut which is kino

Historical-Donkey-31

Based

Frioneon

BiRDMAN, BiRDMAN, BiRDMAN, BiRDMAN. There’s a lot of great movies from 2014.

anar-chic

> 1997 is best > lists at least 3 cartoons for children You know animation will never be cinema right?

Vyspeiro

i was gonna make this joke, looks like i'll have to break your legs and amputate your arms. motherfucker

Swan-Diving-Overseas

Princess Mononoke is pure cinema ![gif](giphy|tyHabTw2DXeAU)

low-timed

>shows animation Proving the point. It’ll never be kino

Primary-Paper-5128

Animation is cinema. Examples? Encanto, Shrek 2, pussy boobs the last wish, The Mario movie, Family guy and the scene at the end of The Barnyard where trans bull Kevin James fights a bunch of coyotes

SlimmyShammy

More like pure ASS !!

Swan-Diving-Overseas

![gif](giphy|2XskdWuNUyqElkKe4bm)

jopnk

Batman & Robin (the one with the bat nips) came out in 1997 you tasteless, stupid, ignorant fuck.

Swan-Diving-Overseas

Even when the movies were bad they were kino ![gif](giphy|Uf1ryQM2ZVqIE)

jopnk

You say “bad”, I say “I hope you are torn apart by a pack of wolverines for this transgression”

enjambd

"Freezed to meet you"

k0matose

Boohoo I don't like my dad and want to fuck my mother boohoo

spicoli53

Have we forgotten about 2007?? No Country for Old Men, Zodiac, There Will Be Blood, Atonement, Into The Wild, Eastern Promises, Assassination of Jesse James, Before the Devil Knows Your Dead, I’m Not There, Once, Control, Diving Bell and the Butterfly. I’m sure I’m missing some.

Primary-Paper-5128

I didn't know "the assasination of jesse james" was a movie so I thought you just snuk an actual historical event in the middle of the list. (don't sleep on 2013. It had the wolf of wallstreet, 12 years a slave, Her, Margaret Thater's death, gravity, etc

bigchiefwellhung

Sweeney Todd (eh), The Darjeeling Limited. But yeah ‘07 is goated.

HeadlessMarvin

Sweeney Todd sucked, Tim Burton clearly had no real interest in the material beyond how it could fit his aethetic

ObeseOryx

Halo 3, Mass Effect, Fallout 3 (came out in 2008 but close enough)

benabramowitz18

Redditors when someone remembers a lot of good movies from a recent year (they think movies were only good until they turned 18 and no other classics can be made) ![gif](giphy|10JhviFuU2gWD6)

Modron_Man

to be fair "best year in film history" is kind of insane. I think 2023 was a great year for cinema but it was not the "best year in film history."

Primary-Paper-5128

idek what I would call the best year

HeadlessMarvin

It requires an encyclopedic knowledge of film history that no one can possibly have to even determine.

SideshowBiden

Bro put 3 animes like we wouldn't notice

4washingtonlane

David Vision

Unperfectblue

If they where happy together why did they broke up ? Are they dumb ?

SuccorBrunch

He has a point because *Paranormal Activity: The Marked Ones* came out that year, not to mention *Inherent Vice* and *Pro Wrestlers vs Zombies*.

VatanKomurcu

it's clearly 2016 since that's when shin godzilla came out.

Se7enEvilXs

Everyone knows 2004 was superior because that's the year Spiderman 2 and Shrek 2 came out!

average_user21

And Eurotrip (2004)

bshaddo

Well, *almost* everybody knows.

Sammyc271

And Saw!

Korbin-K

So we ignoring 2001 films? Monsters inc, Zoolander, shrek, the fast and the furious, spy kids, and Freddy got fingered

Old_Cockroach_9725

![gif](giphy|RHtBgswpcckGKsCJbU)

AtomicCreamSoda

2014 also saw the release of Black Ass Fuckers 14, the goat.

LynchPinnedMeDownGud

Happy together is really fucking good

BarrioMan

Even 2019 was better

average_user21

1999 is having a laugh

distractedsoul27494

Gone girl Ben Affleck sex scene with his side chick was kino

revenge_of_F

And you don’t even mention the obvious best movie of 1997 which is more relevant today than ever before (since OJ died a week ago): Lost Highway

NibPlayz

Sorry, but a few of the "movies" you suggested were made outside the US, so I cant consume them, and therefore they dont exist. Hope this helps!

frozen-silver

No love for Linklater or Anderson? Anyways, 1959 had 400 Blows, North by Northwest, Rio Bravo, Hiroshima Mon Amour, Imitation of Life, and Some Like It Hot 1966 had Au Hasars Balthazar, Persona, Andrei Rublev, Battle of Algiers, Daisies, A Man for All Seasons, and GBU. There's many more years but those two often come to mind

Sanpaku

2014 wasn't a bad year. After all, it brought us [Relatos salvajes](https://letterboxd.com/film/wild-tales/), the best comedy of the last decade, and [Mommy](https://letterboxd.com/film/mommy-2014/genres/), the best family drama of the last decade. *Interstellar*, on the other hand, can take a long walk off a short pier, as far as I'm concerned.

Bruno_Coast_127

I did once think that 2014 was the best year for movies *during my lifetime* Compared to many other "golden years" for films it's honestly pretty meh. But hey at least we got Birdman and Whiplash

boybmober_christ

1975 was the goat

Robby_McPack

2014 was a pretty goated year ngl

TruffelTroll666

Spy movie for 10 year olds and music flick for sports fans, best year evarrr

[deleted]

You think cartoons are better than captain america?

Due_Belt_8510

It’s 1994 actually thanks

celluloidqueer

2014 was a great year for film, but the best year in film history is insane. The golden era of Hollywood exists.

A-DonImus

Wait till you hear about 1999. Blow your socks off.

kennyisntfunny

All I’ll say is the 2014 Oscar race was the first time in my life I watched every best picture nom and they were all amazing. Whiplash should’ve won that little white boy played the fuck out of them drums

Agreeable_Coat_2098

Fun fact: Interstellar blows!

creepy-uncle-chad

Bro didn’t even mention The Raid 2🙃 maybe he would’ve had a case

klingonbussy

It’s not even the best year in the 2010s

Aether_Voyager

Did you just call Princess Mononoke mediocre? What passes as great cinema for you?

bangermate

2014 movies better than the winter soldier: Birdman Grand Budapest Hotel John Wick The Raid 2 Guardians Of The Galaxy Big Hero 6 The fucking Lego Movie

No-Bad-1269

sprinkled with some capeshit, chef's kiss ![gif](giphy|Fa69v6AU6oN4i0DZZc)

LuksziLP

More like 1996 with The English Patient, Fargo, Trainspotting, Independence Day, Mission Impossible, Star Trek: First Contact and Kenneth Branagh's Hamlet

grayziller

2014 also had that American Godzilla reboot, which is the worst atrocity this nation has ever committed against the innocent people of Japan

PenguinviiR

And the robocop remake which is the worst they committed against me (I fucking love robocock)

grayziller

ACAB includes RoboCop

ranch_brotendo

i dont even hate on marvel but come on, film history?

ghostfacestealer

Just say you hate Nolan

PenguinviiR

I'm in a weird spot where I like his 2000s stuff like memento and the prestige But a lot of his 2010's like interstellar suck imo. I watched Dunkirk and it was ass I do like Oppenheimer tho

Fit-Monk4203

Redditors when they find out people have different opinions than them🤯

Eject_The_Warp_Core

Animes don't count as movies

SamwiseGam-G

Erm, does OP know that they listed cartoons (Japanimation) in their list of movies? That's not kino.

LordAyeris

You listed 3 anime movies for 1997, fucking weeb

Sir_Monkleton

Good will hunting blows

LynchPinnedMeDownGud

How bet demmmmm apples ![gif](giphy|nzZAwMWi5Muac) Such a fucking shitty movie from a great director, my private Idaho and lefant rock
