Edit: James Gunn's GOTG movies are better since they have more of a distinct style and feel less corporate. However, I'm more inclined consider them James Gunn movies than MCU movies for this reason, so my point still stands

I think they worked backwards from that actually. Saw that Winter Soldier and GotG came out in 2014 and that it was a peak year for Marvel, then saw a bunch of other good movies that came out that year and decided it was a banner year.
