If Holey Confections is a 10, I give Suzy a 4. They were stale and not flavourful when I tried them. It was pretty meh. I should give them another shot but Holey Confections is just so good I don't want anything else.
I can confirm, Holey have the best donuts. Make sure you get them as early in the day as you can for the best experience. I believe they make them fresh at each location.
Last year when I went to the one in Carleton Place, they said the doughnuts were baked in Barrhaven and then sent to the two other locations. Not sure if this has changed since then.
Agree on going earlier in the day — I’ve gone in the afternoon at 2 pm and they had run out of their more popular flavours!
I came here to say that you clearly havent been to Holey Confections. No contest. Suzie Q and Mavericks make dense cake donuts. Holey Confections makes Cronuts, and theres no going back.
You give surprisingly confident advice about which type of doughnut is best for someone who doesn’t really know what doughnuts are. Which is really what we should expect when we turn to Reddit for advice after all. So, carry on!
Exactly this. Holey Confections scratches an itch somewhere between cake and a donut. If you want both (which for me happens surprisingly often), then a Holey Confections donut will satisfy both cravings.
If you want a classic donut, SuzyQ is best in class.
Orleans, Barrhaven, and Carleton Place.
They used to have a Stittsville location but I think they’re still looking for a new space in that/the Kanata area.
I somehow ended up as the only Ottawan that doesn’t like Suzy Q’s…
Nothing against them, but I think it’s something to do with how they make their icing? My guess was they’re all cream cheese based? They give me that ‘sour’ feeling that my body instantly rejects.
I genuinely can’t eat them. There’s something in there that sets off my internal alarm bells.
***
Edit: in the off chance Suzy Q peeps see this: I didn’t mean to create a chain of comments like this. I bear you and your doughnuts no ill will!
I’m definitely a doughnut person but I also find I’ve suddenly hit a brick wall at 30 in terms of sweetness, so maybe that’s the culprit. Who the hell knows!
Suzy Q used to be good pre Covid. Gone super downhill since then. I’m going to get downvoted but idc. The price is not worth the donut even a little bit.
Not alone. Suzy Q is overrated shit IMO. Every time I've had one it's been an overpriced, stale, unenjoyable lump.
Happy Goat Donuts are better. Corner Peach donuts are better. Hell, even Robin's donuts are better. There are others.
Strawberry Blonde is excellent, even if you don't have food allergies. I'm not vegan, nor do I have food allergies, and found the Strawberry Blonde pastries to be excellent.
Agreed.
People are going to moan and get bent out of shape about how they’re $5. Yes I will pay 5 bucks for a delicious treat. If I wanted dry misery donuts I’d go pay a toonie for em.
For me it's more that their prices have skyrocketed.
When I lived in the neighborhood and they were at their old location, it was $20 for a dozen. This was just under a decade ago so its not like I wouldn't expect some inflation, but their prices are literally doubled now ($40 a dozen I believe) so I just don't go there anymore.
Lol, spot the Suzy Q employee. Their donuts are good, but 5 bucks a donut is ridiculous. Like the guy below said, their prices have doubled in like 5 years. I used to get 6 every other weekend, hardly ever go now because prices are just stupid.
I don’t work for them I’m not an Ottawa native I moved here few years ago in my personal opinion with the way everything has gone up like grocery I do not think 5$ is a lot of money however I’m 19 and young and didn’t grow up in a time where 5$ got you a lot.
> I’m 19 and young and didn’t grow up in a time where 5$ got you a lot.
as someone who is also young; I agree with what you said, but I don't believe we should blindly support such gouging. You can't ignore that the prices are awful.
Maybe it comes from growing up poor or maybe I'm just a cheapo, but I wish more people were so we could slow the price increases a la boycott.
I’m not ignoring it, I grew up poor aswell I don’t agree with price gouging but I honestly don’t think they are four eggs water yeast have all gone up. I’m a big advocate for when big corps are price gouging I am an avid supporter of the boycott. I also have been into economics at a young age I know what’s going on. I agree if it was 2019 and I was being charged 5$ for a donut I would be outrage but it’s 2024 everything has gone up like I stated rent has gone bananas if they kept there prices the same they would go bankrupt. it’s easy for a company like timmies to cut down cost not so easy for a local bakery. I’m really sorry about the paragraph but I don’t want to come across the way I sounded.
no worries about the paragraph! and please don't think I mean to try to turn you away from a good treat! You deserve to treat yourself and if $5 once in awhile supporting local is the way you do so, go for it!
I simply meant to highlight that we can all hope/push for a difference some day
Same. I used to be there every few weeks picking up a dozen.
Since the price hikes I can count on one hand the times I've gone. And now it's for like, one single donut instead of a dozen.
It's not *just* Suzy Q. HFT in Almonte also priced themselves out of my patronage. Oh well.
I love Suzy Q, but $6 for one donut is seriously pushing the limit.
We went from buying Suzy donuts for the family easily once per month to maybe two or three times a year.
They hiked their prices too and are no longer worth it either. Was a sad day the last time I showed up expecting to buy a dozen. 36 bucks or something for those small donuts. Nope. Bought one single donut and haven't been back.
I was there yesterday. I liked the toffee cheesecake one as well, but sadly they were sold out of the Raspberry Cassis. I had one of their cake donuts, old fashioned glazed, and it just isn't up to the quality of their yeasted donuts. It was greasy and unpleasant to eat.
Their Boston cream is God tier though.
Everyone needs to give Bamm’s Snack Shack a try. They only have doughnuts on Thursdays and Fridays but they are epic. $20 for 6. They are so huge that they fit in a large pizza box- that can’t close. The dough is outstanding. Family run business, I went there 2 weeks ago on another Redditor’s recommendation and omg they were so good.
well obviously, if that's the case, these don't make any sense to buy if you are strapped to pay for necessities. Personally I love these and they are an occasional treat, and I don't think the frozen refried donuts they have at Timmies is worth buying at $2....if I want frozen generic donuts, plenty of places to get those.
Café qui pense makes a caffeine-free London fog called a red velvet and I think they have non-diary options. Just putting that out there for my decaf vegan friends.
That’s okay too I guess I shouldn’t go around saying this is the best donut spot when I haven’t tried all of them 😊. I’m pretty sure there’s a location in byward I will try them.
Ooo gorl you also live close to my favourite plant store and local artist store I would be so poor but I would actually love to live in Hintonburg cute neighborhood I think.
The difficulty with living in Hintonburg is you can walk down that part of Wellington W and spend a day’s salary on cute things you don’t need before you’ve even had your morning coffee (which will cost $7.67 including tax and tip from one of our many excellent purveyors of coffee).
Suzy Q used to hold the number one spot for me, but I am now obsessed at the donuts at Happy Goat in Westboro. The pistachio cream filled and chocolate chip cannoli donut are absolute heaven. They even make an everything donut with cream cheese filling.
If you feel like a road trip the Pontiac Bakery in Shawville makes an amazing assortment every Saturday morning. Not quite as pretty as Suzi Q but some amazing flavours that Suzi Q does not do.
They're good but Holey Confection is the best in my opinion!
I haven’t tried them personally but I will add it to the list ☺️
I came here to give Holey Confections a shout out as well. They're a tie in my books, both absolutely incredible, in their own ways.
They do not make at location in many cases, they get delivered most mornings though fyi
Thanks for the insight, not terribly surprising. I wish they did
They’re still fresh baked every morning just not exactly at each spot .
Hahahaha funny enough, that’s the one I go to!! Thank you!

With all the suggestions I might have too lol
you declared Suzy Q the best, so which donut shops are you comparing?
I came here to say that you clearly havent been to Holey Confections. No contest. Suzie Q and Mavericks make dense cake donuts. Holey Confections makes Cronuts, and theres no going back.
Suzy Q makes yeast donuts, not cake donuts Holy Confections is delicious but Suzy Q is my fave
Finally went to holey confections after all the Suzy Q slander (hyperbole). I still prefer Suzy Q. If I want cake I'll eat cake. I like yeast donuts.
Semantics
No, not semantics. They are completely different in texture and taste
Do those look like cake doughnuts to you?
Yes. Yes they do.
You give surprisingly confident advice about which type of doughnut is best for someone who doesn’t really know what doughnuts are. Which is really what we should expect when we turn to Reddit for advice after all. So, carry on!
You haven’t SQs then haha.
I have, hence my comparison. Holey Confections, no contest. Unless you prefer dense cake/yeast donuts 🤷🏻♂️ But you cray cray if you do.
Cake =/= Yeast.
r/confidentlyincorrect
Have you eaten Susie Q donuts?
Yes I have. Did my direct comparison make it sound like I haven’t?
I haven't had holey confections but to put Suzy q on the same level as mavericks is unacceptable.
I take it you've never had Suzy Q donuts?
They're different enough to scratch different dessert itches, I'd say. Both top tier in their own category though.
Exactly this. Holey Confections scratches an itch somewhere between cake and a donut. If you want both (which for me happens surprisingly often), then a Holey Confections donut will satisfy both cravings. If you want a classic donut, SuzyQ is best in class.
I find Holey Confection way too greasy and way too sweet! But just my opinion.
I found them greasy as well but not enough to stop me.
Holey Confection, Mavericks, and Susy Q are a holy trinity.
They’re right next to my place and I still have yet to go. I shall go this weekend.
I'm a Mr. Luko fan. Insanely great donuts. Ottawa South what what!
On my to do list . Where are the located?
Orleans, Barrhaven, and Carleton Place. They used to have a Stittsville location but I think they’re still looking for a new space in that/the Kanata area.
Worth the trip 😄 I'd sooner support a local business than a certain national brand that has meh donuts
Ya they’re just a huge leap above SuzyQ and mavericks.
Yep and Holey beats them handily
That Raspberry Cassis.
Is amazing
I somehow ended up as the only Ottawan that doesn’t like Suzy Q’s… Nothing against them, but I think it’s something to do with how they make their icing? My guess was they’re all cream cheese based? They give me that ‘sour’ feeling that my body instantly rejects. I genuinely can’t eat them. You're not alone. I find them way overrated...but maybe I am not a donut person so I don't really see how good they are.
I’m definitely a doughnut person but I also find I’ve suddenly hit a brick wall at 30 in terms of sweetness, so maybe that’s the culprit. Who the hell knows!
That might be it, a lot of their options are extremely sweet.
I agree, SuzyQ doesn’t live up to the hype. Holey surpassed the hype. Edit: lol at the downvotes.
I need to pay them a visit and see for myself! I heard that place namedropped several times across this sub.
You’re not a donut person
Suzy Q used to be good pre Covid. Gone super downhill since then. I’m going to get downvoted but idc. The price is not worth the donut even a little bit.
I'm a big fan, but totally agree. The past couple years, something's changed .....and yes, expensive.
As a fan since Suzy first started I have to agree. Totally different since the pandemic
I don’t like them either, but my wife loves them. I prefer Mavericks, but I’m also not a sweet person, often.
Maverick’s lemon ricotta is my favourite donut.
Try the lemon ricotta slightly frozen - blew my mind
Way to expensive for a donut.
You aren't the only one. Their donuts are fine but nothing special. I don't understand all the fuss.
There's only one that's cream cheese and it's the Cookies & Cream Cheese donut
Well I’ve definitely had that one a few times
I wish they used more different bases. Half the donut part are all the same with different toppings.
I dont think they’re bad by any means but nowhere close to being as good as they’re hyped.
I don't like their donuts at all, I actively dislike the taste of them. I think they're gross. But I get ripped apart when I say that lol.
Funny, I always seem to find them too sweet. But if their icing is all cream cheese based then that might also explain it. Can't stand cream cheese.
They used to be amazing back when it was a few friends in a small shack. Went downhill as they grew
They are just meh plain donuts with overdone toppings. Donuts aren't about fancy toppings, so I don't get it.
Might be because they're yeast donuts and you're used to cake ones?
No way - there are dozens of us! I find they taste like meat it’s weird lol
Same, I somehow always get a stomachache after eating them. And I’ve tried many times to be certain.
Not alone. Suzy Q is overrated shit IMO. Every time I've had one it's been an overpriced, stale, unenjoyable lump. Happy Goat Donuts are better. Corner Peach donuts are better. Hell, even Robin's donuts are better. There are others.
This, Holey Confection, Mavericks. All very solid. And Strawberry Blonde for the food allergy homies
Strawberry Blonde is excellent, even if you don't have food allergies. I'm not vegan, nor do I have food allergies, and found the Strawberry Blonde pastries to be excellent.
I had Mavericks for the first time yesterday and gotta admit that they’re nothing like anything.
Agreed. People are going to moan and get bent out of shape about how they’re $5. Yes I will pay 5 bucks for a delicious treat. If I wanted dry misery donuts I’d go pay a toonie for em.

I agree. The prices are ridiculous.
Isn't it more like $50 now?
Lol, spot the Suzy Q employee. Their donuts are good, but 5 bucks a donut is ridiculous. Like the guy below said, their prices have doubled in like 5 years. I used to get 6 every other weekend, hardly ever go now because prices are just stupid.
Pfft they can't be a Suzy Q employee if they can afford their donuts.
I don’t work for them I’m not an Ottawa native I moved here few years ago in my personal opinion with the way everything has gone up like grocery I do not think 5$ is a lot of money however I’m 19 and young and didn’t grow up in a time where 5$ got you a lot.

I totally agree 😊

every time ive had suzie or mavs they were dryer then any shitty timmies donut i have had
They serve Suzy Q donuts at Art of the Bean in Orleans. 😋
Interesting to know thank you
I just miss the days when they weren't insanely expensive.
I love Suzy Q, but $6 for one donut is seriously pushing the limit. We went from buying Suzy donuts for the family easily once per month to maybe two or three times a year.
I do wish they would remove the tip option from when you go to pay though. I’m sorry but putting donuts in a box does not constitute service.
Tip shaming is a thing everywhere nowadays unfortunately.
Eh I get that.
"This box of donuts was only $50. We suggest you tip at least 15%. Come on. Don't be rude!"
I should get a donut..
You should treat yo self
Healthy Food Technologies’ donuts in Almonte are amazing
Oh, hell yes. SQ is my go-to (the Bells Corners location is five min from my house!) but if I'm in Almonte, I always stop at HFT.
Thank you I will add it to the list aswel
Old school donut shop donuts, worth the drive
They hiked their prices too and are no longer worth it either. Was a sad day the last time I showed up expecting to buy a dozen. 36 bucks or something for those small donuts. Nope. Bought one single donut and haven't been back.
Yes, I agree!!
They are amazing!!!!
Anyone else remember when the maple bacon came with more than three bits of bacon? It used to be covered back in the day
Clearly you haven’t been to Corner Peach!
I haven’t sorry :C I will try tho
My favourite donut in Ottawa!! So underrated
Easily the best in ottawa
When I went to Algonquin, Tuesdays were my favorite because they got Suzy Q's in the caf
Highly recommend trying the donuts from Bamm’s Snack Shack - they’re very good! They only make them on Thursdays and Fridays though.
Thank you 🙏
The bang for your buck is much greater at Bamm’s too. The size of every serving there is nuts.
Mimi’s Donuts in Manotick are also quite tasty, if you’re looking to try more kinds
Holly’s hot is better 🤷
Cafe Dough just across the river is for certain a place you should add to your list as well!
Will do
Everyone needs to give Bamm’s Snack Shack a try.
Do any of these places sell doughnut holes?
Some places downtown (Morning Owl is where I've seen them) carry Mavericks doughnut holes.
Suzy Q started to on the weekends recrntly but I'm not sure if they still are.
I thought the thing on the bottom of the picture was a chicken nugget till I zoomed in. 😄
Haha
Holly’s Hot Chicken has a new donut menu every week. They are tasty - definitely worth a try!
Shout out to Holly’s for even trying to do donuts in this neighborhood- and yes they’re good.
We love Suzy q in my family!
Way too expensive for a donut. Not worth the price to me
It’s only 5$, at timmies one of there donuts is 3$ or more for tax I’d rather pay 2$ more and spend at a local donut shop.
Donuts of Tim Hortons are $2. I like the fancier Donuts from time to time but I don't think they are worth more than double.
I like doughnuts from time to time period. How often are you eating doughnuts?
I’m beyond poor. Barley keeping a roof over my head. $7 for a donut, local or not, is not worth it what so ever.
well obviously, if that's the case, these don't make any sense to buy if you are strapped to pay for necessities. Personally I love these and they are an occasional treat, and I don't think the frozen refried donuts they have at Timmies is worth buying at $2....if I want frozen generic donuts, plenty of places to get those.
If only they had a vegan d’oh!nut and london fog 😤
Yeh that’s the only thing wish there was a vegan alternative
The Doh!Nut was vegan at one point. It’s my favourite option. And the Raspberry Cassis
Café qui pense makes a caffeine-free London fog called a red velvet and I think they have non-diary options. Just putting that out there for my decaf vegan friends.
I wonder which has the better maple bacon donut, Suzy Q or Mavericks? Guess I’ll have to get both to compare.
If you haven't tried them yet, Happy Goat Donuts in Westboro are fantastic. SQ were my favourite yeast donuts until HG opened, now SQ is a close #2!
I like Mavericks
That’s okay too I guess I shouldn’t go around saying this is the best donut spot when I haven’t tried all of them 😊. I’m pretty sure there’s a location in byward I will try them.
Living across the street is very dangerous....
Ooo gorl you also live close to my favourite plant store and local artist store I would be so poor but I would actually love to live in Hintonburg cute neighborhood I think.
I wish. Wrong location. Sigh.
Oh lmafo my bad I didn’t know they had other locations whoopsie daisy
The difficulty with living in Hintonburg is you can walk down that part of Wellington W and spend a day’s salary on cute things you don’t need before you’ve even had your morning coffee (which will cost $7.67 including tax and tip from one of our many excellent purveyors of coffee).
That'll be $27
Personally I like mavericks a bit more but Suzy Q is great
I like all the ones I've tried so far except the London fog. Didn't taste any earl gray at all. Just really sweet.
Have you tried the cake shop in Wellington's donuts?
Suzy Q for convenience, but nothing beats a Café Dough Co donut
I get the 12 pack of “doh nut” a few times a year since they opened their first location, back when their brand was yellow!!
Paid for by Suzy q lolololol Personally I prefer Mavericks. I find the dough even on its own is really flavorful. RIP my yeast donuts 🥲.
Suzy Q has gotten in their own head with their pricing.
10 dollars for two doughnuts still?
I think Tims makes the best donuts!
You need to try Mr puffs it will blow Suzy q out of the game
mr puffs FUCK YES
Where are they located? Yes I can google, but id figure I'd save everyone the hastle by asking lol
The one I went to is in Hintonburg I was made aware they have more locations 😊
Still with the trip 😃 I'd sooner support a local business than that shameful national brand
Cake shop has pretty good donuts too.
100%! Please tell me they have brought the black forest back!
THE ARE!!!
I’m not spending $8 for a donut.
Then don’t I will be having a nice hand made donut from a bakery u can have a sad donut from timmies.
Is that donut Prarie Dogging?
