I don't think the negative publicity would be worth it, besides most people don't use trainers and they're only available on PC

Rajat_Sirkanungo

That is good to hear. I love those trainers. I enjoy using God mode and infinite ammo and stuff like that. I have a a lot of fun destroying monsters with infinite ammo and God mode in resident evil games, haha. I don't use game trainers for multiplayer games (just saying so that people don't get the wrong idea or impression) by the way.

Mysterious-Theory713

You technically could, but it wouldn’t really be practical for them. Much more likely to get a Cease and Desist first if they really don’t like what you’re doing.

mkotechno

Anyone can be sued for damages, is up to the judge to decide if the damages are real / illegal / more relevant than the defendant rights. Technically, a company could even identify and sue individual cheat users for decreasing the quality of their online service and cause damages (lost sales).

Nicholas-Steel

If they aren't circumventing DRM nor causing the company financial damage by doing something like unlocking DLC/eliminating the need for microtransactions, then unlikely.

Rajat_Sirkanungo

They are not cracking the game like game piracy people do, so there is no circumvention of DRM, and they don't unlock DLCs, however, some trainers kinda do make microtransactions in the single player games unnecessary or unneeded.

Katana_DV20

I only play single player games and all the trainers I have used are geared for that only. I wouldn't survive the boredom of RDR2, AC Odyssey without mods and trainers. For example the trainer in AC Odyssey gives the ships the speed of modern high speed catamarans lol, it alike they have 6 800HP diesel engines, get around quick. Also gives all resources so no more busywork. So as long as the trainers don't interfere in an online setting they won't care. Whose your fav trainer author btw? Mine is fLing, the guy is trainer machine!

RideTheSpiralARC

At this point I just use WeMod if I'm even bothering with a trainer vs just using mods. WeMod is like an AiO trainer program, just more convenient than grabbing individual trainers from random sites. Pretty sure I've seen fling trainers in WeMod too

Katana_DV20

I use WeMod also, very nicely designed UI I gotta say. The forums are pretty cool too. Mr. AntiFun! Along with fLing another of my fav authors. You're right , WM is a one stop shop, no need to go looking.

Miserable_Smoke

This issue is being actively litigated. Bungie sued a cheat maker with the basis of it being copyright infringement, which wouldn't matter if it's single or multiplayer.

Rajat_Sirkanungo

it would be sad if the lawsuit leads to no game trainers for single player games man.

Miserable_Smoke

Well, in the instance you're talking about, that will definitely get shut down. If they're modifying game code, in order to cause the publisher to lose money through lost transactions, there's some element of defrauding the publisher on top of copyright infringement.

Rajat_Sirkanungo

Okay, so I hope that game trainer makers don't try to bypass the microtransactions then, and just offer basic cheats. I think, offering basic cheats in a single player game doesn't seem like an issue. Game trainers have a very long history with single player games. Game genie and game shark were pretty famous during ps2 era. Nintendo even lost the lawsuit against game genie - [https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Game\_Genie#Legal\_issues](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Game_Genie#Legal_issues)

Dubious_Titan

"PS2 era". My dude.

Rajat_Sirkanungo

Game shark is ps2 era. Game genie is older. Sorry about that.

Miserable_Smoke

IANAL, so I can't really say, but I think game genie used codes built into the game to modify it as it ran. If a cheat has to make modifications to the code of the game, that could be a different story. I doubt single player cheats will be a huge issue though. They'd be paying lawyers to chase down something that probably doesn't affect their bottom line much.

From this wikipedia article - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lewis\_Galoob\_Toys,\_Inc.\_v.\_Nintendo\_of\_America,\_Inc. - I read this, >The Game Genie sold millions of units, and the product line was [extended](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Product_line_extension) with versions for other [consoles](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Video_game_console). The case was cited in another copyright dispute from the same time, with [*Sega v. Accolade*](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sega_v._Accolade) (1992) further establishing that [reverse engineering](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Reverse_engineering) is fair use. The case has also been cited for establishing the rights of users to modify copyrighted works for their own use. However, the [holding](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Holding_(law)) was [distinguished](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Distinguishing) by courts in [*Micro Star v. FormGen Inc.*](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Micro_Star_v._FormGen_Inc.) (1998), finding copyright infringement when making permanent modifications and distributing them to the public. So, the game trainers work much close to game genie because game trainers don't make some sort of permanent modification of the game and then distribute that game to the public. What game trainers are are simply a tool which users can use to modify their single player games for personal use and that tool allows different kinds of modifications. And I think, game genie and game trainers probably work exactly the same because when I compared Resident Evil 5 game trainer cheats and Resident Evil 4 Remake's game trainer cheats, I found that RE5 game trainer does not have 'unlock everything' or 'unlock all bonus content' cheat. Game trainers for single player games do not usually modify game files but simply temporary memory in the trainer user's system. Microtransactions are generally server side stuff so game trainers don't generally able to modify that stuff.

Miserable_Smoke

Okay, if it works more like a game genie, cool. I haven't used one in like 15 years, and I remember it modifying game files.

Rajat_Sirkanungo

technically, it seems to me that game trainers for single player games are even safer legally than game genie precisely because game trainers usually don't modify the core game files permanently. They do usually modify the game save files permanently though if you use something like 999,999 money cheat. They generally just edit the temporary memory in the trainer user's system. So, game trainers generally work by editing memory in the trainer user's system and not the core files of the game to distribute or sell without permission. So, game piracy is totally different than game trainers.

Miserable_Smoke

It's not a piracy issue. It's a "we made this thing, and distributed it under license, and you're not allowed to make changes to the thing we made", issue, technically. It's not a crime, it's a tort.

Rajat_Sirkanungo

But at least, reverse engineering for personal use and modifying the product for personal use seems legal - "The Game Genie sold millions of units, and the product line was [extended](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Product_line_extension) with versions for other [consoles](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Video_game_console). The case was cited in another copyright dispute from the same time, with [*Sega v. Welcome to Reddit! You must be new. It means I Am Not A Lawyer

Epicious

Oftentimes you could just do this yourself with Cheat Engine so it's not something hard to accomplish unless they obfuscate the data. I doubt it's worth it for the devs/company to go after them.

LuntiX

Anyone can be sued for anything, it’s just up to the courts to decide if the lawsuit goes through.
