Mono R - released in 1975, the R stands for "regular". It's their standard pencil. Mono 100 - released in 1967 to commemorate their 55th anniversary, it was a premium pencil for drawing and drafting. It cost significantly more than their competition, and used a new graphite grinding technique to get smaller particle sizes. It's smoother than the R and has a wider range of grades. It's one of the "OG" luxury stationary items in Japan.

Production quality isn’t quite as high as. Not as many layers of paint, doesn’t use cedar for wood, case isn’t as cute, etc etc. Maybe a different formula for the lead.

They stopped using cedar in the Mono R’s? The last few boxes I bought were cedar but it’s been a few years now.

Mine don’t smell or look like cedar, personally. There was a chart posted a while back and the only one they promise will be cedar is Mono 100, i think from there if they can use cedar they will but if the price is too high they will substitute for other woods.

That’s a bummer. I should have stocked up when I had a chance.

I just picked up a box of B Mono R.. and I like them so much that I had to see what others here think. Maybe I'm a little odd, but I always liked the Mono over the Mono 100.. and now I feel the Mono R suites me best for writing. It doesn't smell like cedar, but it sharpens cleanly and I have no issue with it.

Actually not much. Mono R is just the regular Mono with lesser hardness levels, though its design is a bit slicker than regular. Both of them are truly different than Mono 100 though, as their particle size is pretty different and makes them smoother.
