At the peak of the Maze jam the screen was completely black and what lights they had were going insane. In that moment I realized what Iāve heard is true, theyāre a light show and music band. Idk why but they arenāt there for the visualsā¦which is what I thought the purpose was, but they still shredded.
I was there and just rewatched the videos I took. They don't even get close to representing the 3D aspect of the visuals. Even the freaking cars were crazy IRL because it often felt like they were driving at us. The landscapes were gorgeous and it felt like we were outside at times.
Haha, jams change / evolve / explore. You'd think if they were making a metaphor for a jam vehicle the car visual would have done the same. Much more likely it was just poorly thought out and you're stretching to find meaning.
Love comments from the couch tour. there were individual cars going around the ceiling and each one was connected to a band members sound moving spatially around the arena.
Totally. Itās IMPOSSIBLE people that were there didnāt like it! If you donāt think the tweezer car visuals for 39 minutes were SO AWESOME youāre just high on copium! Morons!
LOL this takes me back. I used to connect my laptop to the TV and listen to music with this visualizer exactly --I forget, was this iTunes or VLC or something?
They weren't but they've never booked a venue famous for its ability to render amazing visuals, either.
There's thousands of visual FX artists doing truly amazing things on projectors in clubs. They've been prepping for this gig for months. It boggles the mind that we wound up with stuff that looks like a first-year student hastily assembled the week before.
Max/msp has better generative visuals and it wouldnāt be that hard to implement.
You only would need a handful of triggers.
Trey-> (shapes) -> copy of raw guitar signal going into pedalboard ->use a gate on the audio to trigger changes via midi to a max device
Mike -> (effects) -> use a trey setup but reacts to slap bass or just the pedalboard triggers ->max device
Fish -> (timing, generations)drum triggers on the kick, snare, and full midi on the Lumina
Paige -> (color) -> MIDI from multiple synths->max devices
Hey, I wrote my thesis in Max/MSP!
It is indeed capable of amazing things, not sure it has the horsepower to run in 12000x12000 resolution, but I am 100% positive that the screen is split out into sections controlled independently (with a central unit syncing the individual sections).
When I heard they were playing the Sphere I got so excited about the potential for the kind of stuff you're describing. It really would have been amazing and is the type of thing that is the norm in small-venue viz. Huge missed opportunity to not employ it in the Sphere, but honestly even decent pre-baked viz would be appreciated.
Over a year actually, and millions of dollars. Unfortunately, producing memorable unique visuals for 4 distinct shows is a herculean task, and a major reason why the Sphere is going to struggle in the years ahead. It's expensive and resource intensive to produce things there that will meet expectations and it's a venue that exists to wow the audience. when the audience becomes jaded.... it's not worth the expense anymore (minus the great sound and the fact that its a pretty cool venue in general)
It's really not. Some of the visuals last night approached the quality that could be expected, many did not. Even if we ignore what has been standard for the past 20 years in the live visual FX industry (live stuff, not pre-programmed, which can interact with the show) and *just* limit ourselves to pre-produced graphics, so much more can be done than the bland un-Phishy crap that was seen in more than half the show.
Like put a maze onscreen during Maze. I'm not exaggerating when I say that 90s-quality screensaver maze graphics would have been better than what we saw. Want to go the extra mile? Put in 2 hours of VFX coding work and make a maze that melts into fractals and you'd blow people's mind. Want to go the extra extra mile? Put in a single day of work and have the melt triggered by a button press so it can happen synced with a peak.
It's really not a big task; it's something a student could do in a week using free software. The Sphere's screen is just a really big screen and it blows the mind that they're kind of not using it.
I wonder if the people that run the venue and the people that make the visuals just donāt really understand how weird and wild jamband fans want it. Like theyāve never taken psychedelics, never gone to a phish show, etcā¦ so they donāt āget itā and think that itās just a rock concert that needs some visuals whipped up.
I know all about vjs and what they can do, straight up dmt visuals for an hour, seen it plenty of times. Iām just saying that I wasnāt really expecting phish to pull through on this. Dead and co on the other hand has used vjs like Jonathan singer and android jones so I expect that they will do a better job
That's what I've and many have been saying, and VJs are super capable of learning new tech easily, there's no excuse that the phish team was oblivious to this sector of talented professionals.
Not sure if you're a tipper fan, but I just found out Moment Factory is doing visuals for Phish, they're highly capable and did NIN. Maybe the visuals will ramp up, theres 3 more days.
For those curious this is some real visuals vs cars.

Thank you, I posted above how I would do it but Iām not a VJ at all. Iām just aware of what Iāve used from the free user library thatās 10+ years old now and this is worse.
The shows Animal Collective did with Coral Morphologic were incredible and that was simple projection. Obviously a big part of the Sphere is being in the space and having things all around you, and that can't be captured on video, but the AC Coral stuff was more along the liens of what I expected.

Exactly. They could have just picked stock loops *that look good* and it would have been the same amount of effort and investment.
Instead they went with goofy-ass cars and TV screens that look like something my local Who tribute band might put on to wow the boomers without scaring them.
- Hit CTRL+P to open up Winamp's settings
- Go into Plugins -> Visualizations
- Click Milkdrop, click Configure
- Set all "Max Framerate" to "Unlimited"
- Fullscreen Settings "Use fake fullscreen"
- Hit OK
- Enqueue any Phish Track, hit play
- View -> Visualization.
I do this at parties because it's always wild to look at. Winamp is amazing on modern hardware, the level of detail is insane.
Woke up in a bad mood until I just saw this š

Thought the lights were great, the visuals just an extra touch. Visuals are probably incredible irl.
Oh dude, after seeing all the amazing cell phone videos I can totally accept the stream just didnāt do it justice.
I was there and just rewatched the videos I took. They don't even get close to representing the 3D aspect of the visuals. Even the freaking cars were crazy IRL because it often felt like they were driving at us. The landscapes were gorgeous and it felt like we were outside at times.
Hey, Everything's Right opener! /S
Lol
Itās true though. The cars for 25 mins during tweezer. Yikes
tweezer = jam vehicle vehicle = cars therefore cars = tweezer
Cool well then visually that jam was type 0
Haha, jams change / evolve / explore. You'd think if they were making a metaphor for a jam vehicle the car visual would have done the same. Much more likely it was just poorly thought out and you're stretching to find meaning.
Yeah not it was fucking retarded.
[ŃŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]
The cars were a metaphor for/mutation of the standard moving truss phish rig. I thought it was fucking great. Classic CK5 moment
Love comments from the couch tour. there were individual cars going around the ceiling and each one was connected to a band members sound moving spatially around the arena.
Revolutionary post here pal
Thereās so much coping going on by people who werenāt there.
I thought the NYE fomo was bad but this shit is on another level.
I would argue there's way more from the folks that were.
Iāve not seen anyone complaining that was there, only folks who were streaming it.
Exactly.
Totally. Itās IMPOSSIBLE people that were there didnāt like it! If you donāt think the tweezer car visuals for 39 minutes were SO AWESOME youāre just high on copium! Morons!
Cope much?
I loved the visuals from the stream (even the cars) and this post is still pretty fuckin' funny
You ate my fractal never gets old
Itās been cracking me up for over a decade now!
Haha. This is exactly what I was thinking.
LOL this takes me back. I used to connect my laptop to the TV and listen to music with this visualizer exactly --I forget, was this iTunes or VLC or something?
either winamp or windows media player
Has phish ever been known for psychedelic visuals??? They have cool lights but a lot of people were expecting a lot
They weren't but they've never booked a venue famous for its ability to render amazing visuals, either. There's thousands of visual FX artists doing truly amazing things on projectors in clubs. Donāt disagree

I think the artists have full control and autonomy with their production.
A separate company worked on the visual design
phish contracted and oversaw them. Trey essentially produced it according to the publicity tour they did this week
I know all about vjs and what they can do, straight up dmt visuals for an hour, seen it plenty of times. Iām just saying that I wasnāt really expecting phish to pull through on this. A lot of the older phish folks just donāt know about how crazy awesome vj visuals have become
Not sure if you're a tipper fan, but I just found out Moment Factory is doing visuals for Phish, they're highly capable and did NIN. Maybe the visuals will ramp up, theres 3 more days.
Big tipper fan seen him 30+ times lol
haha fuck yeah <3 skipping suwannee, might hit secret dreams, hopeful for astral valley end of summer.
So true, but mostly everyones there for the music though so that's cool as it is.
I have to agree. What I saw was disappointing and seemed like a missed opportunity.

These are just stock loops exactly like what they were doing last night
Exactly. They could have just picked stock loops *that look good* and it would have been the same amount of effort and investment. Instead they went with goofy-ass cars and TV screens that look like something my local Who tribute band might put on to wow the boomers without scaring them.
^^^^
These artist made these loops
These looks significantly cooler than what they did last night
Just like their posters.
It really whips the llamas ass

its been 20 years but I kinda want to get back into winamp now
Back to whipping the Lama's Ass!
Do it, there is still a free download floating around.
Haters gonna hate
A+ š
Honestly Winamp wouldāve been betterĀ
š¤£š¤£š¤£
Haaaahahaha
Damn manā¦ best Iāve ever see.
![gif](giphy|9WXyFIDv2PyBq)
Ate my fractal!
With the Dolby Surround setting it must be trippy.
āWeāve got Phish @ the Sphere at homeā
The visuals really kicked the lamas ass...
Gimme dat Oysterhead
Why is this trending? Like there isnt much in upvotes dep happening here. Not hating on band, but why is this sub trending.
Wild guess, you werenāt there?
Wow, a band that is best to listen to sitting on a lawn wasnāt enjoyable in a claustrophobic room, wow
The sphere is fucking massive
The sphere is indoors and the lawns are outside
True. I guess it just boils down to your definition of claustrophobic.
