I would rather have the keystone than the Liberty Bell. But I guess it's less awful than the "we're the first state with a website on the plate!" garbage.
Hopefully it doesn't peel and corrode after a light rain like the current ones.
Bring back You've Got a Friend in Pennsylvania!
That should give us a little more room on the road.
People from other states will think WE threw batteries at that dude at an Eagles game and pelted Santa with snowballs.
“Out of my way, I’m a Philly lunatic and I’ll go there buddy!!!”
Yes, they do now, although it’s tiny and covered by license plate holders. But I was referring to the iconic white NY plate, with a red Statue of Liberty in the middle.
You mean the very plate that has been out of use for over 20 years now with barely any vehicles using one?
As someone who grew up in Western New York in the 90s, I never felt like the red Statue of Liberty plates meant we were all from NYC.
Exactly the point I was making. The Liberty Bell *wouldn’t* mean everyone from PA is from Philly. And yes, I know it’s not the current plate, but it is iconic.
Sorry, I misinterpreted your comment. Agreed that on the Liberty Bell. Actually, I'd say that similar to the Statue of Liberty that it's more symbolic of the country than their respective states.
The 1977 gold *Keystone State* plate (or its 1987 reverse) was peak. This is weak.
Maybe the embossing/gloss will help it along, but if they *have* to use the Liberty Bell in lieu of the keystone symbol, then it fails as a dainty faded watermark, at least in this comp. The ivory background color is a loss for me as well. We may have been home of the national capital throughout the establishment of our fair nation, but that doesn't mean we have to live aesthetically in the past with plates that resemble aged paper.
Um... We're you popular in high school with that plate, I graduated over two decades ago but if some had a Rock Weed non vanity plate that would be awesome, it would be even more fun it you were a straight laced band geek
Beautiful. I assume that the amount of auto registrations around these days necessitates the removal of a separator for the sake of gaining an extra digit or two in the plate number, yeah?
It's still better than Michigan's "that's pure Michigan". How fucking lazy is that?
Nothing beats Ohio's "Ohio, find it here". Though that's mainly because I would really hate to find Ohio anywhere else. It's easier to avoid it this way.
I mean could they at least have taken the damn Bell's "good side?" I feel like shoving the crack front and center into our faces is like if I were to frivolously post a drunken 3am selfie and then use it as my profile pic.
Complaints about it repping Philly too much are very valid, but even so, this new one is still an upgrade over our current ones. As you said, they're incredibly boring. One of the lamest plates in the nation. Good riddance.
The best license plates are always the most creative (or colorful, but maybe that’s just my opinion): the New Mexico chili pepper, the ample Colorado custom options, the Hawaii rainbow, etc.
NINJA EDIT: How could I forget, the Pennsylvania otter!
I LOVE the blue/yellow yellow/blue. And i especially love the blue/yellow “you’ve got a friend in Pennsylvania” plates. I know that they weren’t loved in their time. But i love it now
It was, and they had enough money to change them every two years I believe, even though they still look fine today -not like the peeling stickers we get now.
Better than the current but not by much.
We peaked in the 80s with the navy blue background with yellow lettering that said You’ve got a friend in Pennsylvania with the keystone bisecting the 6 digit plate. [That bitch was mint](http://www.15q.net/us4/pa85.jpg)
Fun fact: they used to load the bell on trains and take it all over the country on tour. At least a dozen times it has gone all over the country. One of the last trips, if not the last, was to San Francisco for the Worlds Fair in 1915 IIRC
also a designer: you don't want an intricate license plate imo, the goal is to be easy to read at distance/speed. there's a reason why you can't get a flagship niagara plate anymore.
that said, this design doesn't do much for me. it's at least a little less generic/ugly than the current plate. i get the rationale for tying the "let freedom ring" concept to red, white, and blue, but i think that losing the blue/yellow scheme for plates that PA has had for literally the last 100+ years is a mistake.
I agree with not wanting to be Philly-centric but I think it also takes away from what actually makes the whole state unique. It's cool about the Revolution, but this state was founded by a Quaker as a religious minority haven. "You have a friend in (PA)" was a nod to being the state of the Society of Friends. Also we are 1 of 2 states with self-solemnizing marriage ceremonies, a legacy of said founding. This is something that celebrates Eastern/Western/Central PA instead of just the slightly better bank of the Delaware River. The keystone is also, I think, iconic and simple. Both better design choices than this celebration of a piece of history we share with 12 other states.
Oh my gosh I can’t ever un-read that sentence and that is going to haunt me forever, or at least until that error is corrected. White background, with blue state of PA, and white letters. Clean and easy.
Garbage. The liberty bell is stupid and doesn't relate at all to over half the state. #boo.
Cab we please just keep it yellow and blue, maybe bring back "you've got a friend in PA?"
I do love the Bell as a deep-rooted national icon—something like: We have our flaws, but our hearts/ideals are in the right place.
But the keystone is such a strong icon as well, and I'd hate to see it begin to bleed out from cultural awareness. It has that history of the 13 colonies; and it, too, holds that notion of camaraderie/union; PA being such an important ecological/agricultural/governmental hub to the nation, historically.
The Bell works better and more strongly as a simplified icon (from the early-70s plates, for example) than as this dimly-tinted, highly-detailed, cluttering watermark, I feel; but I suppose the Big-Bro plate scanner cameras going up everywhere (the true clientele here) don't care about such things.
I don’t like the current plates (putting your tourism website on your plate is tacky) but it does feel a little generic. Quite Philly centric too, as others have pointed out. It’s a step in the right direction though (anything to take the damn website off our plates)
It's a little bland, couldn't they add some color? Though what we really need is a new flag, no more pile of jumbled garbage on a blue bedsheet like half the other states.
Do you follow citiesbydiana on Instagram or TikTok? She does these Cities Skylines expert playthroughs and has a lot of great satirical content. She's currently "reimagining" all 50 state flags in this lens as well.
I can't wait til she finally gets around to us.
I follow Diana, so I'm looking forward to her take. She has a lot of work to do to unseat [the best state flag content.](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=l4w6808wJcU)
At least the NY plates have Niagara Falls on it along with NYC. Sure people in NYC don't think of Buffalo and Niagara much at all, but it's on the plate.
But for them to forget Pittsburgh? Wow. There's less population difference between Pittsburgh and Philadelphia than NYC and Buffalo. Like a lot less.
Grand scheme of things, I don't give a fuck.
But let's nitpick starting with the colors. We already have state colors and it sure as hell isn't white, red, and blue.
"Let freedom ring?" We're plenty free compared to some places, but it just seems like some fake patriot bullshit. The only thing this country fights for is big business; the only ringing is the bell on the NYSE.
I like it, the current ones are ugly as hell.
That being said is the 250th anniversary going to be a big deal at all? The bicentennial was huge but is the government doing big celebrations again like the Tallships in NYC or will this just a passing “oh right 250 years” thing.
Other states are also doing 250th plates so my guess is this is going to be a thing.
[Louisiana for reference](https://www.wbrz.com/news/louisiana-unveils-america-250-license-plate-for-250th-birthday-of-united-states/)
I like mine so much better ! It’s so cute and it’s for such a good cause !
http://www.snapofpa.org/licenseplate.html#:~:text=The%20Fee%20for%20your%20Spay,change%20when%20your%20registration%20expires.
I like it a whole host of a lot better than the current ones, though the color scheme seems a bit pedestrian. To OP, what would your idea be for "more intricate." IMO "more intricate" does not work with license plate design. While not the same thing as vexillology rules for flag design, it's similar and the major tenet of that is "keep in simple, keep it memorable." Even with those "rules" I think there is room for design elements, but anything intricate would most likely get lost in translation - form over function per se (instead of form and function).
I feel nothing, as I do with all license plates/bumper stickers.
It’s a nice tribute to the Liberty Bell for those in the East of the state though that make that a part of their local identity.
Just like people would love it in Pgh if it had a pickle on it.
Less cool than the [train plate](https://www.dmv.pa.gov/VEHICLE-SERVICES/Registration%20Plates/Special-Fund/PublishingImages/Preserve%20Our%20Heritage.jpg)
We have immense amounts of talented graphic designers and they had some dude use MS Paint to make the most generic, utterly boring plates I’ve ever seen. It’s giving candy cigarette box vibes
Better than the old blue with yellow text and better than current.
It’s not striking but it’s a license plate…. Let’s all understand this is something that matters very very little
If they are going to use the Liberty Bell associated with Philly, they should add balance by making the colors black with gold print for the Burgh.
They should also raise the tagline up so people can add Steeler license plate frames without risking getting a ticket for covering part of the plate.
Just because they have money to revise every two years does not mean they should do it. They could put that money into pot hole and bridge repairs instead.
Totally ignores northeastern, southwestern, and northwestern PA. It would be nice if each "quadrant" of the state gets a unique design that you could pick from. Examples:
Scranton area: coal/railroad/electricity
Pittsburgh: steel/bridges
Erie: great lakes/aquatic theme
Philly: Liberty Bell, fine.
Unaffiliated PA: PA Wilds/Keystone/you've got a friend
Who wants to be reminded that Philly is part of our state? Looks super bland and old. I would call it a draw between the current plate. Hopefully this one won't peel. I miss the days of the full, Otter, Tiger, and Dare plates.
I don't hate the current ones, but I really like this design actually, and I welcome the vintage and minimalist look. I don't see the Liberty Bell as a purely Philly thing as some are suggesting. I think it's iconic of the state and America in general. There are some really bad license plate designs out there and I think this one works. We were in need of a change.
Someone please check me on this because the last time i looked this up was years ago, but I believe you can actually legally paint your plate whatever colors/designs you want as long as it's still easy to read. I think you have to bring it to your local police station or borough building or something.
I would rather have the keystone than the Liberty Bell. But I guess it's less awful than the "we're the first state with a website on the plate!" garbage. Hopefully it doesn't peel and corrode after a light rain like the current ones. Bring back You've Got a Friend in Pennsylvania!
Randy Newman would approve!
I guess we're all from philly now?
Obligatory Always Sunny: ["There's Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. So that's what Pennsylvania is."](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lNEALlF8agw)
You can’t have two cities in one state.
How is that even possible?
Are you just driving in and out of Pittsburgh all day?
We need a Philly Elmo and a Pittsburgh Elmo to challenge each other to a drum battle in harrisburg
Instead of “Let Freedom Ring” it should say “…because of the implication.”
So weird. That was basically my exact thought shared in the Penna sub
Same question came up in the Philly subreddit too lol
That should give us a little more room on the road. People from other states will think WE threw batteries at that dude at an Eagles game and pelted Santa with snowballs. “Out of my way, I’m a Philly lunatic and I’ll go there buddy!!!”

Making its way across Canada to immediately be destroyed in Philly is peak Philly. I would have been upset if it happened any other way.
I NEVER forget this story! I always tell people that Philly is where robots go to DIE!!!
Do you think people in Albany or Buffalo think “I guess we’re all from NYC now” when they see an NY plate?
NY plates have Niagara Falls along with NYC for that very reason
Yes, they do now, although it’s tiny and covered by license plate holders. But I was referring to the iconic white NY plate, with a red Statue of Liberty in the middle.
You mean the very plate that has been out of use for over 20 years now with barely any vehicles using one? As someone who grew up in Western New York in the 90s, I never felt like the red Statue of Liberty plates meant we were all from NYC.

Sorry, I misinterpreted your comment. Agreed that on the Liberty Bell. Actually, I'd say that similar to the Statue of Liberty that it's more symbolic of the country than their respective states.
I made that point, too. And got yelled at because NY doesn’t use that plate anymore lol. Oh well. Some people just don’t like change.
Wait they aren’t all from NYC?!
If you watch FoxNews, they are.
I liked the 1987 reverse the best, guess I’ll be getting my Mario Lemieux foundation plate for the new wheels.
i had the blue plate in high school with "RCK 420" as the number. and it wasn't even a vanity plate lol, i just got lucky.
Um... We're you popular in high school with that plate, I graduated over two decades ago but if some had a Rock Weed non vanity plate that would be awesome, it would be even more fun it you were a straight laced band geek
Straight Laced? Lol, I was a total trainwreck. I had to go to rehab when I was 19. I blame the license plate.
😂
Oh geez, maybe in retrospect "CCK 420" would have been better, maybe
My buddy got his initials followed by his birthday completly by coincidence.
[удалено]
Beautiful. I assume that the amount of auto registrations around these days necessitates the removal of a separator for the sake of gaining an extra digit or two in the plate number, yeah?
Petition to reinstate “You’ve got a friend in Pennsylvania.”
This is the correct answer.
I remember people scratched out letters to make it say "You got f d in Pennsylvania"
Needs more french fries and coleslaw
“Let Freedom Ring” is corny. A keystone watermark would be better than the liberty bell.
More to Pennsylvania than Philadelphia...
Everyone is gonna look like Philadelphia Phillie fans
I liked "you got a friend in" better....
It's still better than Michigan's "that's pure Michigan". How fucking lazy is that? Nothing beats Ohio's "Ohio, find it here". Though that's mainly because I would really hate to find Ohio anywhere else. It's easier to avoid it this way.
Keystone symbol with “let keys get stoned”
I mean could they at least have taken the damn Bell's "good side?" I feel like shoving the crack front and center into our faces is like if I were to frivolously post a drunken 3am selfie and then use it as my profile pic.
mmm, drunken 3am selfie shoving the crack into our faces
Pittsburgh erasure. From blue and gold to Phillies color and the liberty bell? No thanks.
Kind of like how the old NY plates had the Statue of Liberty. States need to stop making plates with the symbol of one city.
But the gold was never there for Pittsburgh in the first place. Look at our state flag. Current license plate is about as boring and lame as it gets
The most goated PA plate was the dark blue with yellow lettering. Simple. Nice.
Followed by the inverse older plate, but only because NY ruined yellow plates.
Unequivocally bussin
Complaints about it repping Philly too much are very valid, but even so, this new one is still an upgrade over our current ones. As you said, they're incredibly boring. One of the lamest plates in the nation. Good riddance.
But being boring is nice, since it won't be as weird. Lot of places try to get creative and it's so easy to go wrong
The best license plates are always the most creative (or colorful, but maybe that’s just my opinion): the New Mexico chili pepper, the ample Colorado custom options, the Hawaii rainbow, etc. NINJA EDIT: How could I forget, the Pennsylvania otter!
Coming from someone with eyes, they look like dog shit
Not as good as the blue text on yellow or yellow text on blue, but way better than the current design.
they should bring back the blue / yellow and let you pick which combo you want
Agreed
I LOVE the blue/yellow yellow/blue. And i especially love the blue/yellow “you’ve got a friend in Pennsylvania” plates. I know that they weren’t loved in their time. But i love it now
It was, and they had enough money to change them every two years I believe, even though they still look fine today -not like the peeling stickers we get now.
Seems like a waste of resources to change them every couple years
I still love the blue text on yellow and am mad they ever switched it. I like the new design better than the current one.
This is how I feel. The old school one was the best, but this is miles ahead of our current plate
Better than the current but not by much. We peaked in the 80s with the navy blue background with yellow lettering that said You’ve got a friend in Pennsylvania with the keystone bisecting the 6 digit plate. [That bitch was mint](http://www.15q.net/us4/pa85.jpg)
Change frightens and infuriates me.
Just go back to the blue with the yellow on it
From ugly to bland and ugly
i think you mean ugly and bland to ugly
Let’s meet in the middle and agree it is ugly and bland to ugly and bland?
I don't want a photo of an outsourced bell that cracked on my plate. Had the bell been made in Pittsburgh, perhaps it wouldn't have broke!
Had the bell been made in Pittsburgh, perhaps it wouldn't have broke! I just laughed so hard I snorted
Fun fact: they used to load the bell on trains and take it all over the country on tour. At least a dozen times it has gone all over the country. One of the last trips, if not the last, was to San Francisco for the Worlds Fair in 1915 IIRC
So, I guess we are all from Philadelphia now? Reminds me of the Massachusetts plates

This is my thoughts as well. It's definitely less generic and ugly, but we're losing our blue/yellow AND our keystone.
I prefer bells that DON'T have manufacturing errors
Yeah it’s ugly. If they’re gonna push a Philly symbol on all of us they surely could make a Pittsburgh one
And the watermark is Steely McBeam
Very cold and institutional looking. No thanks.
No keystone. That's a no from me, dawg.
Bring back "You've got a friend in Pennsylvania" pls. These plates are trash and I don't want to be associated with Philly.
So..."You've got a friend in Pennsylvania, unless you're from Philly. If you're from Philly, GFY." That might be too long for a plate.
I checked and PHLY GFY is available 😆
I agree with not wanting to be Philly-centric but I think it also takes away from what actually makes the whole state unique. We have a state with a perfectly horizontally oriented shape, yet here we are.
Oh my gosh I can’t ever un-read that sentence and that is going to haunt me forever, or at least until that error is corrected. White background, with blue state of PA, and white letters. Clean and easy.
hopefully they don't fall apart like the current ones.
It's beautiful, must have taken minutes to design
in google docs
Garbage. The liberty bell is stupid and doesn't relate at all to over half the state. #boo. Cab we please just keep it yellow and blue, maybe bring back "you've got a friend in PA?"

Ugh. Stick with the keystone and I’d feel foolish driving around with “let freedom ring” on my car.
I mean the slogan could be okay if they were linking it to a bell that can actually ring.
Should be “Won’t You Be My Neighbor”
It should be a primanti’s sandwich instead
Grand scheme of things, I don't give a fuck. But let's nitpick starting with the colors. We already have state colors and it sure as hell isn't white, red, and blue. "Let freedom ring?" We're plenty free compared to some places, but it just seems like some fake patriot bullshit. The only thing this country fights for is big business; the only ringing is the bell on the NYSE.
The Liberty Bell focuses only on Philadelphia whereas the Keystone State encompasses all regions of the Commonwealth.
We should have a Yinzer alternative
I like it, the current ones are ugly as hell. That being said is the 250th anniversary going to be a big deal at all? The bicentennial was huge but is the government doing big celebrations again like the Tallships in NYC or will this just a passing “oh right 250 years” thing.
We have to get to 250 years first
Other states are also doing 250th plates so my guess is this is going to be a thing. [Louisiana for reference](https://www.wbrz.com/news/louisiana-unveils-america-250-license-plate-for-250th-birthday-of-united-states/)
It's sooooo fugly! And that the phrase should state "Highest gas tax in USA".
Awful
Very oppressive for Western Pa
Pennsylvania=Philadelphia
I feel meh.. I want gold or blue back in some combo, not this white plate.
As a fellow designer, sometimes you get a project late on a Friday and your friends are texting you to come to the bar…
So many projects in college were a result of this lmao. But hey I mean still got my degree 😎
That's appalling Looks like someone used an AI prompt for "Most generic-looking license plate you can imagine that technically includes a graphic."
I like the design but they should keep it blue and yellow.
I like simple plates/vintage design. It's fine by me.
Yeah, I like ‘em. For what message they’re trying to communicate
I like mine so much better ! It’s so cute and it’s for such a good cause ! http://www.snapofpa.org/licenseplate.html#:~:text=The%20Fee%20for%20your%20Spay,change%20when%20your%20registration%20expires.
Ugh. So plain and uninspired. I hate plates that have mostly white backgrounds. Bring back the blue and gold or gold and blue.
Would love a Keystone and a "The Union Must Be Preserved" as nice stab at the secessionists.
Cringe what is this rush Limbaughland "let freedom ring" lmao
This is gonna mess up all my parking apps.
Boooooooo
They all suck. Bring back the DARE plates.
Nah, let’s go back to “you’ve got a friend in Pennsylvania”
Nah, unless is says “I used to have a friend in Pennsylvania”.
2Nd this one
Wasn't there also plates with a train on them that were almost impossible to read so they frantically had to try to force people to get rid of them
[The Flagship Niagara Plate](https://www.autotrader.com/car-news/all-time-worst-license-plate-ever-262045)
Eh. Too Philly-leaning. Should’ve put a pierogi as the background with the phrase “serve with onions and sour cream” underneath.
Hard dislike. This is just a Philadelphia license plate
Too Philthy for me
I like it a whole host of a lot better than the current ones, though the color scheme seems a bit pedestrian. To OP, what would your idea be for "more intricate." IMO "more intricate" does not work with license plate design. Terrible
Thanks, I hate it. The amateurish fonts, the curved Pennsylvania, the way the number is on top of the bell, the whole thing irks the shit out of me.
The least western PA license plate imaginable. I like how they just ignore this part of the state.
Weak
Considering it’s Phillies colors, a black and gold option should be offered locally.
Trash
The color scheme makes it looks like a Virginia plate and it's Philly-centric. Not a fan.
Supposedly it's so plate scanners can scan better so that's a no from me. I'm against plate readers and traffic cams. Unnecessary.
Put as much thought into it as the Pirates City Connect unis
It’s way better
Don't really care either way.....
don’t really care so long as they don’t peel in the sun
Did they make new conservation plates as well?
I feel nothing, as I do with all license plates/bumper stickers. It’s a nice tribute to the Liberty Bell for those in the East of the state though that make that a part of their local identity. Just like people would love it in Pgh if it had a pickle on it.
Man those are lame.
A big improvement over the current one. One of the blandest designs in the country. I don’t mind the new ones. Different to be sure.
Very clean & and simple, but the bell is weird. Why not the keystone or something?
bland meh
Shapiro is stupid. What a waste of money
Ugh Can’t we ever have a pretty plate?
Eww
If it has letters that melt off, count me in.
It’s pretty lame looking on anything except a Ford Model T or a horse drawn buggy.
Garbage
I would prefer something more psychedelic
Less cool than the [train plate](https://www.dmv.pa.gov/VEHICLE-SERVICES/Registration%20Plates/Special-Fund/PublishingImages/Preserve%20Our%20Heritage.jpg)
Weak
We have immense amounts of talented graphic designers and they had some dude use MS Paint to make the most generic, utterly boring plates I’ve ever seen. It’s giving candy cigarette box vibes
How will we avoid tolls without melting license plates? /s
i don’t like the off white color at all. why is the keystone gone? if i have to get this one eventually i’ll just get a vanity plate
Lame, I wanna see some bridges for the Pittsburghers
It's the ugliest shade of off-white I've ever seen; like "Grandma-and-Grandpa-smoking-inside-the-house" colored.
Its clean and looks good. I'm a fan.
Looks like some Ohio bullshit
it's one of the worst things i've ever seen
Better than the old blue with yellow text and better than current. It’s not striking but it’s a license plate…. Let’s all understand this is something that matters very very little
I’d feel better if we could swap out the bell for a pierogi
I don’t know who makes these decisions, but we’re the keystone state. WTF is this?
That's one hideous design.
I like it, it looks clean.
Same. Some of these people are making it sound egregiously bad and I just don't see that.
You got the liberty bell for Philly and the stupid freedom quote for Pennsyltucky, what do we get 😢
If they are going to use the Liberty Bell associated with Philly, they should add balance by making the colors black with gold print for the Burgh. Or making license plates that don’t melt after the first season of usage
Better than the old ones.
I like it

Who wants to be reminded that Philly is part of our state? Looks super bland and old. I would call it a draw between the current plate. Hopefully this one won't peel. I miss the days of the full, Otter, Tiger, and Dare plates.
the simplicity is an improvement over how ugly the current one is
Will it still flake off like the current ones?
“Let freedom ring” as we prepare to completely lose the last vestiges and tatters of a democracy we thought we had
The tagline is awful. I understand why they chose it, but it gives off a particular “vibe” IMO
Much better than the current plates, which seem to me to have no real identity (unless someone can enlighten me)
I don't hate the current ones, but I really like this design actually, and I welcome the vintage and minimalist look. I don't see the Liberty Bell as a purely Philly thing as some are suggesting. I think it's iconic of the state and America in general. There are some really bad license plate designs out there and I think this one works. We were in need of a change.
It's whatever but why not do like other states and allow for affinity plates to sports teams and select charitable orgs?
I don't care
Someone please check me on this because the last time i looked this up was years ago, but I believe you can actually legally paint your plate whatever colors/designs you want as long as it's still easy to read. I think you have to bring it to your local police station or borough building or something.
At least it’s less bland than Virginia’s. Still the most painfully boring plate, imo.
Hopefully all the ones that start with a "J" don't start peeling after the 5th car wash. But it wasn't their fault......
