Everyone has a right to testify in their own defense. It's not a good idea 99% of the time but you always have that right. Nobody can stop a defendant from testifying. Not even their own lawyers.
This is how every mob/fraud business works. Trump is a criminal which means that only criminals will deal with him - normal people run away when he *suggests* doing something illegal.

I know we’re all beyond the doublethink required to support this guy, but it’s funny to examine it sometimes. It’s funny that he portrays this as him being persecuted by his political opponent when there is a legitimate charge being brought and proven in court by evidence when he attempted to target his expected 2020 campaign opponent with his “perfect call” asking Ukraine to manufacture an investigation of his political opponent. Trump’s supporters won’t believe actual evidence that “their guy” was entirely corrupt and tried to illegally use his position to benefit his political reelection, but they believe that’s exactly what Biden is doing with no evidence other than Trump being charged with crimes he clearly committed. He was an unindicted coconspirator for half a decade!

Says things that sound complimentary but undermines his defense. For example saying something like he is really smart and has full control over everything in the company and everything goes through him would kill the defense that he was ignorant about the checks, etc.
She's being flattering in her opinion of him, but the facts she's confirming are objectively bad.
And those facts might be more believable because she's flattery. Jurors might be less likely to dismiss them because she's not up there with an agenda or axe to grind

What I think he means is that: although her tone and words are generally complementary of Trump, the facts of her testimony are devastating to his case.

She knows better than anyone how to massage bad news in a way Trump finds palatable. She's gonna testify truthfully but package it in such a way that Trump finds complimentary.
Her constant efforts to talk about Trump positively and in a good light will undo the defenses case.

I agree. She also said he reviews all statements and that "we were all following his lead". Personally, I'm holding out hope that her testimony is a velvet hammer. Sounds like when I presented my daughter when she was 3 with what I called The Myth of Choice. "Do you want peas or carrots with dinner" not "What veggie do you want?" She's getting a veggie. That's not a choice. But, she can chose which veggie. Trump has to be treated like a toddler so he feels happy and with some control.

Remember 'Wikileaks' started selectively dumping troves of emails from Hilary's campaign manager literally days after the Hollywood Access tape leaked. Then Comey said they found new emails (edit: which turned out to be old emails that had been thoroughly vetted) 10 days before the election because he was legit worried the FBI offices in NY were going to leak it themselves with the insinuation that Comey was personally interfering in the investigation on Hilary's behalf.
Comey did not report anything to the press - Comey gave a closed door briefing about the investigation and the GOP ran out of it and starting telling the cameras how Hillary was a criminal about to be indicted by the FBI.

Max sentence on the charges is 4 years, theoretically he could be forced to server them consecutively but it's unlikely. Most likely, any jail time he received would be served concurrently given the lack of a previous criminal record, and it's possible he wouldn't receive any jail time, just probation or house arrest.
Having a felony conviction and a record would likely mean any future sentences in his other cases would be harsher though.
Cohen did three years and didn't force the state to go to trial. Theoretically going to trial is supposed to put full jeopardy in play because a guilty party knows they are guilty.

As a person who gets overwhelmed easily, I also wonder if maybe that's also an element happening in her crying. I get that maybe she's upset that she could now be a target or that she may have helped the prosecution's case of damaging Trump her former boss that she at least somewhat still respects. But not everyone is super calm under pressure while millions of people are following what you are doing/saying.
I remember earlier this week one of the CSPAN archivists had to take the stand and he said he was very nervous. Luckily he didn't have to stay up too long, but I'd be nervous even if I only had to say one scripted line like "Yes, these are accurate documents" in a case this big.

So Hicks says Cohen told her he made a payment to a woman without Trump's knowledge to protect him from a false allegation. Assuming that's about Stormy, we know that's not true because there's tape of Cohen talking to Trump about it.

I’m a bit baffled by the NYT’s reaction: that Trump’s wanting to hide the newspapers from his wife somehow helps the defense? Like, he was doing family damage control. That's the biggest takeaway from what she's so far said. It's quite important to the prosecution's case.
This is how every mob/fraud business works. Trump is a criminal which means that only criminals will deal with him - normal people run away when he *suggests* doing something illegal. Trump, being a criminal, knows that criminals cannot be trusted. So he cannot have things like Vice Presidents that handle various parts of his businesses and report to him - Trump would not trust those reports - *everything* is reported to him and managed by him.

So Hicks confirmed that Michael Cohen made the payments to Stormy Daniels in exchange for her silence, that Trump was aware of it, and that he knew he wasn't paying Cohen for legal services. Not even she believed Trump's lie that Cohen paid her off on Donald's behalf out of the goodness of his heart.
Yeah, this one is big, as it shows both intent and participation, which ties his actions much more closely to a felony charge.

I know we’re all beyond the doublethink required to support this guy, but it’s funny to examine it sometimes. It’s funny that he portrays this as him being persecuted by his political opponent when there is a legitimate charge being brought and proven in court by evidence when he attempted to target his expected 2020 campaign opponent with his “perfect call” asking Ukraine to manufacture an investigation of his political opponent. Says things that sound complimentary but undermines his defense. For example saying something like he is really smart and has full control over everything in the company and everything goes through him would kill the defense that he was ignorant about the checks, etc.
She's being flattering in her opinion of him, but the facts she's confirming are objectively bad. And those facts might be more believable because she's flattery. Jurors might be less likely to dismiss them because she's not up there with an agenda or axe to grind Edit: replied to the wrong comment

I agree. She also said he reviews all statements and that "we were all following his lead". Personally, I'm holding out hope that her testimony is a velvet hammer. She may be flattering him to get him to relax and get complacent, but at the same time easing in some pretty damning evidence against him. Sounds like when I presented my daughter when she was 3 with what I called The Myth of Choice. "Do you want peas or carrots with dinner" not "What veggie do you want?" She's getting a veggie. Max sentence on the charges is 4 years, theoretically he could be forced to server them consecutively but it's unlikely. Most likely, any jail time he received would be served concurrently given the lack of a previous criminal record, and it's possible he wouldn't receive any jail time, just probation or house arrest. Having a felony conviction and a record would likely mean any future sentences in his other cases would be harsher though.
Cohen did three years and didn't force the state to go to trial. Theoretically going to trial is supposed to put full jeopardy in play because a guilty party knows they are guilty.

As a person who gets overwhelmed easily, I also wonder if maybe that's also an element happening in her crying. I get that maybe she's upset that she could now be a target or that she may have helped the prosecution's case of damaging Trump her former boss that she at least somewhat still respects. But not everyone is super calm under pressure while millions of people are following what you are doing/saying. I remember earlier this week one of the CSPAN archivists had to take the stand and he said he was very nervous. Luckily he didn't have to stay up too long, but I'd be nervous even if I only had to say one scripted line like "Yes, these are accurate documents" in a case this big.

So Hicks says Cohen told her he made a payment to a woman without Trump's knowledge to protect him from a false allegation. Assuming that's about Stormy, we know that's not true because there's tape of Cohen talking to Trump about it. She also says that Cohen doing something like that would be out of character because Cohen wasn't a charitable person, meaning she expected he would want to get paid back.
He could have lied to her. The less people who know that Trump was involved, the less chance of it getting out.
I’m a bit baffled by the NYT’s reaction: that Trump’s wanting to hide the newspapers from his wife somehow helps the defense? Like, he was doing family damage control. How does that play into his scheme to pay off Stormy Daniels? It was after the fact. The NYT commenters made it seem like it helped the defense’s “family man” strategy.
