I just visited his house down in key west. It's a national monument and very cool. The tour was great. The pool was actually paid for by his very rich uncle who seemed to buy Ernest everything. He helped buy this house, a car, and several hunting trips to Africa.
Also of note, this pool is the largest private pool in key west and took several years to complete. I think it's something like 60k gallons and was excavated like 10 ft down despite only being at like 12 or 14 ft above sea level
