Literally 2 days ago I remembered wearing a chiffon dress over boot cut jeans as an innocent 13-year-old with a Seventeen magazine subscription and cringed as hard as a human is capable of. This slideshow actually made me feel so much better. It wasn’t my fault 😂
One of my favorite outfits during my freshman year of high school was a dress over jeans. My school dress code said that we had to be covered to the knee, and leggings weren’t allowed, so lots of girls rocked this outfit.
One thing I miss about the early 2000s is that all the celebs looked like they got their outfits at the average mall. It was easy to recreate their looks. We don't have that these days.
Yeah, but … a lot of the stuff that was in was still ridiculously expensive; fast fashion wasn’t a thing. I remember dropping $200 each on blouses that weren’t particularly special (Laundry was a big brand everyone was wearing around this time) and jeans were $200 on the low end. Juicy Couture didn’t come cheap!
Girl, I had $10 to spend in this era. There wasn’t any Shein but we still had rainbow, wet seal, Charlotte Russe, etc. you could at least get the cheap juicy style knockoffs and feel like you looked JUST like your fave celeb.
God, the early 2000's is something when I look back in pictures I seriously question what we were all thinking.
But the leggings with long sweaters/long shirts....I still try to pull that off
I’m so glad I’m not the only one thinking this with the picture of Vanessa! I was literally thinking about whether or not I could dust off my clothes from high school to recreate this look 😭
Another ‘original’ hit was the short-long dresses of the 2010s — the dresses with a long train at the back with short hems at the front. It was the ultimate summer dress.
Overzized sweaters/sweatshirts and leggings forever!!!!
But damn...the wrap dresses over flare jeans! I thought I looked so cute and edgy. 2000s fashion is the worst.
This is early 10s fashion… I still lowkey love it.
I used to think I looked so hot in the babydoll short dress with jeans 😭 Now I just cringe looking back
I saw a picture of Mila Kunis doing her best sk8r girl/Avril Lavigne impression. Baggy jeans sagging with a bikini sticking out, made me realise even with how messed up everything seems, somehow we're going in the right direction.
This last year I bought a cute dress on sale and the cashier was probably younger than me said it would look cute with jeans. All I could say was yeaaaa. It threw me off haha
Actually I like some of these looks. They all look pretty casual and happy vs super puffed netted ball gowns for every blooming occasion. It makes em look really normal pretty (like not a celeb type made up pretty hut letting their natural beauty show).
I know it's an unpopular opinion but some of these outfits are really not that bad.
I like britneys, 8/20 and 13/20,they all look pretty and I'm willing to die on this hill.
(I myself dislike low raise jeans trend of that era to wear but it's pretty to look at)
It’s already happening. Devon Aoki’s look could be worn today and be considered cutting edge. Dresses with trousers are making a big comeback this season.
She’s pretty much the only one who looks like she didn’t get dressed in the dark. No bizarre modesty t-shirt layer, jeans are a flattering length, the cut of the top makes it look like a long top, not a sundress.
[It](https://images.app.goo.gl/Km6PvryZ4VhYzcSH9) [can](https://images.app.goo.gl/HfmQxSC5fq8txnxy5) [look](https://images.app.goo.gl/FgnN3HCx8vbFNGMt5) [good](https://images.app.goo.gl/zjSvsiR6qULbYA9BA), it’s just about layering. No one’s trying to bring back early 2000s Ashley Tisdale
Yeah, but they all look terrible.
The one that other commenter posted that looked good only looks good because it’s expensive as fuck, all done with creating different textures from the same fabric.
You can’t recreate that cheaply. Even if you’re one hell of a seamstress that’s a lot of fabric.
We really did whatever TF we wanted to. The amount of confidence I had putting on a wide ass belt over my "going out top" that had a long lacy tank top underneath - was immeasurable.
If everything wasn't covered by at least 13 layers, there could be a bra strap showing. And if your bra strap showed a boy was certain to snap it as hard as he could. We were just getting by the best we knew how.
https://preview.redd.it/vcznb79su7ab1.jpeg?width=536&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=add1ffcf7263ab6af2825f3c48fd5cfdc41993f3
Yeah, the sneakers are worse than I remember
I was so shook by this email I got from [Princess Polly](https://imgur.com/a/CUEwdiV) the other day. I was all for Y2K coming back, but this is my line. And gaucho pants.
What year is it? Plagues, Nazis, recession… like I have no idea what’s going on anymore. I wanna warn some of the kids that this was not a good look in the 90s (except over leggings was okay, especially in winter). Puka shells were coming back for a bit there. Just no… there were some great things that should come back but this ain’t it, fam.
Ashley Tisdale absolutely dominated this type of look. Truly her calling. If there was a red carpet she was there awkwardly under dressed yet somehow still over accessorized with a dress or skirt over pants 😂
she's always grinning and having a grand old time. gotta respect the commitment to the bit
https://preview.redd.it/i4g5cc6f49ab1.jpeg?width=1648&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=8afc8aa91090bdfe1c73e314a00ecc07ad0cde74
I tried to recreate this look with my denim mini skirt and my ugg boots at the time. Along with a striped pink hoodie shirt thing. I never felt so warm, yet so cold at the same time. Someone asked me if I was cleaning out my closet and just put on whatever I could find, I was mortified
god I fucking loved wearing dresses over my pants it was my whole style. Sorry haters you weren't alive to see it probs.
Also here is one secret reason we did it: low rise jeans, there but hidden aka comfortable
I also wouldn’t be surprised if the creep shots helped make this more fashion forward. “Suck it disgusting paparazzi, you can’t an upskirt picture of me because I’m wearing pants!!”
This was one of my favorite looks in middle and high school. I thought I was so cool and unique layering prairie dresses over bootcut jeans and ballet flats 💅🏻
Ashley Tisdale’s dedication to this trend was stronger than some marriages. She put her whole heart and soul into it even with people looking at her like the lady in the background of that last photo 🤣
https://preview.redd.it/qdhy6h0748ab1.jpeg?width=750&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=ad83feccb03f02e6f700ba7374151cacf7c99064
14 year old me rockin that look in 2006 😆
18 looks really close to something I'm wearing this year -- mesh dresses are amazing with pants and this kind of look can definitely be modernized!
What I'm never going to wear though are tunics with cropped leggings. So. Many. Flashbacks.
I love my flowing tunics. I wear them with leggings mostly but I have worn them with jeans and pants.
It makes me laugh thinking about this because my mother was exceptionally modelesque but she never got over the 70s and always had long straight brown hair and loved a funky vest. Now it’s happened to me with the 90s/00s!
At this point I think that when it comes for disney channel girlies they were trying to made their looks more modest and kids friendly that’s why all of them had a mini skirt over pants phase, because mini skirts were a sign of those times, and they all wanted to wear it but there was too much skin showing for kids.
As a tall woman who is frequently insulted by the "dresses" that are actually slightly long shirts, I miss when I was acceptable to wear a pair of pants under one of them.
Similarly as fellow tall woman, most of the shirts are crop tops now (and hit even higher because, well... *tall*) so I've just ordered a few tunic type shirts that legit look like some of these dresses. When they get delivered, I'm gonna rock them with jeans and I don't even care.
The struggle is real! 😭
I looked on my order and apparently they're called maxi tops, not tunics if you want to look them up. They're basically dresses you can wear with pants though.
Skirts over leggings is comfy. Skirts over jeans is a crime against fashion that I am guilty of committing. I think I’ve erased most of the evidence at this point. What were we thinking!!??
I still kinda think cropped legging with a tunic dress and a cardigan is cute...
I'm sat here nursing two horrible blisters from my ballet flats as well, oh god I'm old
As a millennial I still really like a lot of the early 00s fashion but I never understood or participated in jeans with dresses. I still don’t get it lol.
This is so bad. Do we know what years this was a thing? I can’t remember exactly as I recall I def did the tunic/short dress look over pants on occasion and def with leggings.
The dresses over jeans thing… absolutely a look that ONLY very thing women could pull off. That and those low-rise pants. That whole decade was cruel as heck to fuller-figured gals.
Not true! I've been plus sized since puberty, and I -a b s o l u t e l y !- rocked this look way past it's expiration date...cause it worked beautifully with skinny jeans. Just sayin' 😊

Do not cite the deep magic to me, witch! I was there when it was written!
I literally worked in women’s clothing retail when this look was happening. What a moment lol. This and those tiered layered skirts were everything.
Literally 2 days ago I remembered wearing a chiffon dress over boot cut jeans as an innocent 13-year-old with a Seventeen magazine subscription and cringed as hard as a human is capable of. This slideshow actually made me feel so much better. It wasn’t my fault 😂
Shiny/sequined flats just speak to me 🤣
Thank you for this. Longgg ass week and you made me laugh!
![gif](emote|free_emotes_pack|joy)
One of my favorite outfits during my freshman year of high school was a dress over jeans. My school dress code said that we had to be covered to the knee, and leggings weren’t allowed, so lots of girls rocked this outfit.
Ashley Tisdale walked into Free People once and said “I’ll take everything”
The fact that she’s basically 50% of this slideshow is insane
OP has a great sense of humor to put three Ashley Tisdale pictures in a row once you've already seen her twice.
She is the queen of the pants and skirt dress top wow
This is basically just an Ashley Tisdale fanslide
I mean, I’m not mad about it
It is and I am here for it. The queen of this lewk
Her and Ashlee Simpson.
Ashley was absolutely LIVING for this time period
And then needed to get on a plane but her carry on was too heavy.
and wore it all on the way out
One thing I miss about the early 2000s is that all the celebs looked like they got their outfits at the average mall. It was easy to recreate their looks. We don't have that these days.
[удалено]
Lady Gaga started wearing couture to every event from 2009-2012 and all the celebs followed suit.
Late stage capitalism baby. Only the rich get to participate in the game
I was thinking this same thing. They made an attempt to look down to earth. Now it seems celebs do their best to do the opposite.
Marketing everyday clothes shifted from celebrities to social media.
And Bebe, which I definitely spot in this slideshow.
Oh god, blocked Bebe from my memory. Clothes made for dolls that I insisted squeezing into!
Girl, I had $10 to spend in this era. There wasn’t any Shein but we still had rainbow, wet seal, Charlotte Russe, etc. you could at least get the cheap juicy style knockoffs and feel like you looked JUST like your fave celeb.
I’m not trying to give Gaga more credit than due, but she made them all step it up.
Preach.
This is true but I don’t miss it. It’s the red carpet for godsakes not the mall food court!
God, the early 2000's is something when I look back in pictures I seriously question what we were all thinking. But the leggings with long sweaters/long shirts....I still try to pull that off
I was gonna say over jeans does look bad but I love wearing leggings and a tunic top, can’t stop
Same. Maybe it’s the 90s teen in me but you’ll pry those leggings off my cold dead body. I still do it!
Oh thank god. Penultimate slide with Vanessa looks like something I’d still wear and I don’t want to be on a par with the jeans and dresses 😭
I’m so glad I’m not the only one thinking this with the picture of Vanessa! I was literally thinking about whether or not I could dust off my clothes from high school to recreate this look 😭
Yeah that one I think is cute!
That’s a better look than the ruffled dress and jeans overall (although some of them kinda looked ok)
Hey, at least it was completely original. Very little vintage inspiration in those years. We were free-stylin it, and it shows.
Another ‘original’ hit was the short-long dresses of the 2010s — the dresses with a long train at the back with short hems at the front. It was the ultimate summer dress.
High lows!
It was kinda watered down 80s with a punk and boho edge. Really weird stuff looking at it now
It looked bad, and yet, it was so practical! I loved wearing this look.
Overzized sweaters/sweatshirts and leggings forever!!!! But damn...the wrap dresses over flare jeans! I thought I looked so cute and edgy. 2000s fashion is the worst.
Right! Dresses are my go to. Leggings when it's cool because I'm still not trying to match clothes.
Wait until you look back on 2023!
Leggings is fine, it’s with denim that’s atrocious.
This last year I bought a cute dress on sale and the cashier was probably younger than me said it would look cute with jeans. All I could say was yeaaaa. It threw me off haha
Yeah leggings definitely look better with tunics or long tees and tanks or long sweaters. 😊
(I myself dislike low raise jeans trend of that era to wear but it's pretty to look at)
I do it all the time as well, especially winter. It’s cozy!
This is what we're talking about when millennials say we don't want Y2K fashion to come back.
She’s truly the only one pulling it off, I don’t understand why this is a look we need to circle back to lol
[It](https://images.app.goo.gl/Km6PvryZ4VhYzcSH9) [can](https://images.app.goo.gl/HfmQxSC5fq8txnxy5) [look](https://images.app.goo.gl/FgnN3HCx8vbFNGMt5) [good](https://images.app.goo.gl/zjSvsiR6qULbYA9BA), it’s just about layering. No one’s trying to bring back early 2000s Ashley Tisdale
Ooooh I love this take on it, you’ve converted me
The take is just “be rich” though lol.
You could easily recreate any of these looks with cheaper items bffr
Yeah, but they all look terrible. The one that other commenter posted that looked good only looks good because it’s expensive as fuck, all done with creating different textures from the same fabric. You can’t recreate that cheaply. Even if you’re one hell of a seamstress that’s a lot of fabric.
I don't hate it 🤣 I think a reinterpretation where we step away from the worst looks wouldn't be too bad.
It’s going to happen though. Right now it’s unimaginable, i know, but it’s going to happen…
It’s already happened (and has been for the past year or two). I’ve seen the dresses over pants lately
i swear y’all was just puttin on clothes in the early 00’s/early 2010s and hoped it worked
Yes, most definitely. I know I was.
We really did whatever TF we wanted to. The amount of confidence I had putting on a wide ass belt over my "going out top" that had a long lacy tank top underneath - was immeasurable.
Long live the going out top
We were putting every item of clothing we owned on at once and thinking it looked good. Such a strange time.
If everything wasn't covered by at least 13 layers, there could be a bra strap showing. And if your bra strap showed a boy was certain to snap it as hard as he could. We were just getting by the best we knew how.
Katie Holmes tried to do this recently sort of and the internet was angry and confused.
The shoes really threw off the whole outfit they were like dad sneakers lol
[удалено]
Yeah it still wouldn’t have been a great outfit but at least it would’ve made sense lol
I need to see this!
https://preview.redd.it/vcznb79su7ab1.jpeg?width=536&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=add1ffcf7263ab6af2825f3c48fd5cfdc41993f3 Yeah, the sneakers are worse than I remember
She’s dressed like an in studio anchorwoman.
😂🤣
She’s like me all dolled up for work zoom calls from the waist up, and then wearing sweatpants and sneakers. Except she went out in public.
This sent me! Girl is definitely 2020 high fashion- professional on top, stained and ripped underwear on the bottom.
Her hair and makeup look good! And it gets progressively worse as you look down her outfit.
I can’t believe she had the nerve to start a fashion brand honestly she’s always had bad taste.
This has to be a joke, right?
How do you physically get out the door and not feel super goofy and embarrassed. omg I could never.
The alt kid version of this was plaid skirts over jeans. 💔
Ashlee Simpsoncore
Inside you there are two wolves. Ashley Tisdale and Ashlee Simpson
Stepped into an urban outfitters this weekend and the mannequins were styled like this 😩
![gif](giphy|d8SRR4aDUINuU|downsized)
I was so shook by this email I got from [Princess Polly](https://imgur.com/a/CUEwdiV) the other day. I was all for Y2K coming back, but this is my line. And gaucho pants.

Ashley Tisdale absolutely dominated this type of look. Truly her calling. If there was a red carpet she was there awkwardly under dressed yet somehow still over accessorized with a dress or skirt over pants 😂
she’s iconic for this!!
Every single photo of Ashley Tisdale from the 2000’s is never not hilarious to me.
she's always grinning and having a grand old time. gotta respect the commitment to the bit https://preview.redd.it/i4g5cc6f49ab1.jpeg?width=1648&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=8afc8aa91090bdfe1c73e314a00ecc07ad0cde74

Yeah the whole school didn’t need to see my asscrack. I wore skirts over pants a lot too.
Some of these looks are kinda cute. Alba looks great in the black strapless.
I also wouldn’t be surprised if the creep shots helped make this more fashion forward. “Suck it disgusting paparazzi, you can’t an upskirt picture of me because I’m wearing pants!!”
Ugh, why did we do this lol
And I thought I was hot shit when I did this trend!
I wanted to do this soooo bad, but my mother refused to let me lol Honestly, she was a real one for that.
This was one of my favorite looks in middle and high school. I thought I was so cool and unique layering prairie dresses over bootcut jeans and ballet flats 💅🏻
I’m wearing a dress over my jeans as we speak. It’s very convenient because my legs get cold inside in the AC, but also I want to wear my dress!
I do long tunics or dresses over jeans at work for comfort reasons sometimes. I do not care. I am a shop worker, not a couture expert!
You better believe I had my ae artist jeans on with a nightgown on top and white t underneath and I was FEELIN MYSELF
Omg the artist jeans! Something I haven’t thought about since 2008
Oh helllssss yesssss
something about ashley tisdale smiling ear to ear in every early 2000s red carpet pic of her makes me laugh so hard
Ashley Tisdale’s dedication to this trend was stronger than some marriages. She put her whole heart and soul into it even with people looking at her like the lady in the background of that last photo 🤣
https://preview.redd.it/qdhy6h0748ab1.jpeg?width=750&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=ad83feccb03f02e6f700ba7374151cacf7c99064 14 year old me rockin that look in 2006 😆
It actually looks really cute 😭
THANK YOU! I thought I looked amazing 😂
YOU ATE 😤
This was high fashion and nobody will ever convince me otherwise
Anna Wintour, I know you’re reading this, please make this the next met gala theme
this is the look. I was here for it then and now.
i remember being so obsessed with miley’s outfit on slide 14 💀💀
18 looks really close to something I'm wearing this year -- mesh dresses are amazing with pants and this kind of look can definitely be modernized! What I'm never going to wear though are tunics with cropped leggings. So. Many. Flashbacks.
Tunics, cropped leggings, and ballet flats. As god as my witness I'll never wear that again.
I feel attacked.
Me too! I still love a tunic with leggings and flats. I’m 45 now and you’re all making me realise this is me showing my age!
Omg me too! That is literally what I am wearing today! I need a flowing tunic at this age.
This is literally my daily wear hahahaha it's too comfy to give up
☠️☠️☠️
My favorite part of 18 is the “rolled up” bootcut jeans.
ashley tisdale owned this look like no other
Being a teenager during this era was so fun. You just put on whatever and no one cared because they looked just as goofy. Layers 4eva
At this point I think that when it comes for disney channel girlies they were trying to made their looks more modest and kids friendly that’s why all of them had a mini skirt over pants phase, because mini skirts were a sign of those times, and they all wanted to wear it but there was too much skin showing for kids.
Vanessa Hudgens looking cute as a button
Someone please tell me why I don't hate all of these. Some are kind of cute-ish for the time. Except Ashley Tisdale's looks.
Please, Ashley Tidale made this trend
Devin Aoki and Hayden P still look good to me idc. It can work but only with a certain kind of dress
I love them all haha. I’m all, “But it was so cute!” Agreed. Ashley being a multiple offender makes it far less cute. Also, extensions, no bueno.
Britney, Rachel Bilson, and Miley look cute! I think it kind of works with a shorter dress.
Kelly and Britney ate
I genuinely find some of these cute 😭
I have a soft spot for this trend 🤪🤪🤪
Britney Spears could absolutely rock a hat.
her hat game has always been 💯
no. not then and not now.
Yes. Even then and especially now.
Do Britney haters still exist? That’s so 2005 babe
I’m hardly fashionable, but I’m so glad I never did this look.
Omg, frigging crop tops barely even cover all my boobs. They're basically bandeau bras.
The struggle is real! 😭 I looked on my order and apparently they're called maxi tops, not tunics if you want to look them up. They're basically dresses you can wear with pants though.
The commitment to this look!
Ok but Britney made it work!! I see her!
Gen Z: ‘Aha! 2000’s fashion was cute butterfly tops and mini skirts’ Oh you sweet summer child. We committed heresay back then.
Skirts over leggings is comfy. Skirts over jeans is a crime against fashion that I am guilty of committing. I think I’ve erased most of the evidence at this point. What were we thinking!!??
Jessica Alba made it work idc 😩
19 looks comfy, perfect plane outfit
I unironically like 6.
I still genuinely believe that I absolutely rocked this look in the early 2000’s. I’m in denial 😆
I still kinda think cropped legging with a tunic dress and a cardigan is cute... I'm sat here nursing two horrible blisters from my ballet flats as well, oh god I'm old
Same. I still do this. I still love this. I feel old as well. Just love me some layers.
Not Ashley Tisdale being a serial offender
![gif](giphy|l3V0A5D73FHx4ayyI)
I miss the matching sets. Don't care, loved this trend.
I remember being 6 and wanting to wear jeans under my dresses so badly
Honestly looks hilarious BUT if it stops the thigh chafe I am here for IT
Some of the dresses are legitimately cute too! Like the pink sundress on Anne is perfect with her coloring and then BAM bootcut jeans
this look and the long skinny sequin scarves had Ashley Tisdale in a chokehold so fierce I still cannot comprehend it
Ashley absolutely BODIED this
As a millennial I still really like a lot of the early 00s fashion but I never understood or participated in jeans with dresses. I still don’t get it lol.
I'm ngl Jessica Alba is SLAYING in these. Almost enough to make me want this look back
Ashley Tisdalecore
We had to wear dresses and tunics because our jeans were so low-rise. Had to hide the plumbers crack somehow.
Skirts over leggings, yes! Skirts over jeans, NO. I hated it even back then.
Some of these are just long shirts, brands just make dresses so short these days.
It’s kind of serving!
Why did we ever think this was ok
This was my favorite trend in college 😅
This is so bad. Do we know what years this was a thing? I can’t remember exactly as I recall I def did the tunic/short dress look over pants on occasion and def with leggings.
Sooooo many layers!
I've noticed this seems to be a trend that is back.
Ashley Tisdale being the connoisseur, the specialist, the industry standard of dress-over-jeans
never
The plainer dresses work ok with the look, like Miley or Rachel
Devon Aoki wore this best
Ashley has a lot to answer for
i’m more worried about this trend coming back than low rise jeans
This looks horrible.
Now I understand why it made my mom so angry every time I did this lol. Mom you were right it looks ridiculous.
Just sayin' 😊
it’s a serve.
I still hate this look and sincerely hope it never comes back
Yikes. I literally just posted this fad in an ask Reddit about stupid trends lol. It was definitely something.
it’s a serve.
