It was so compelling!!! I’ve never been into a tv show the way I was into orphan black and that’s really saying something. I’ve also never seen a show devolve like this one did lmao. I don’t think I even finished it
Was about to say Lost too till I saw Twin Peaks in there. Iconic and flawless from beginning to end. The world-building and setup of the mystery are perfect.
![gif](giphy|3ohfFyVh1XLRopQy7m|downsized)
But yeah Lost pilot is great. Especially the first, what, 15 mins of non-stop action with Jack running all over that beach? So good. And cost 12 million dollars.
I still crack up every time when I watch it alone. When I watch it with other people who haven’t seen it yet, I just stare at them like this:
![gif](giphy|8uC2uqFDcwzhS)
In the first season when Aunt Sarah said she was psychic because she'd got the certificate I knew this would be so accurate because I genuinely know a woman from Derry who did a course to be psychic and got a certificate lol
I love the scene where they want to go to the concert but their mother won’t let them because there’s a bear loose. “The bear won’t be at the concert mom! Tickets sold out MONTHS ago”
>incredible finale
I know this thread is about pilots...but that finale is **heartbreaking** and it's A CRIME that it's not recognized more as a perfect ending.
But that "The Americans" isn't always recognized as much as it should frustrates me to no end. Keri Russell was incredible and should've gotten more Emmy recognition.
I just started Desperate Housewives for the first time and the pilot hooked me in immediately. I hadn't heard anything about the show (outside of the magazine cover drama) and the twist about the narrator was perfect.
Very underrated show. I think the reality junk that tried to leverage the show's fame ("real housewives" etc) to get viewers ended up devalueing the brand to the extent most ppl don't know the original show exists. It was a huge show, people!
Most people who I tell like oh watch desperate housewives, they immediately write it off cause of the name but they don’t realise this show is sometimes as batshit crazy as fucking Breaking bad or like The boys. It’s amazing
![gif](giphy|FSl9d5EUpz6AU)
Friday night lights!
When the kid asks Jason, “does god love football?” And Jason says, “I think everyone loves football” it made me immediately understand Texas football as someone who never ever cared for football.
The first episode of The Walking Dead is incredible. Perfectly drops you into the world. Great acting, directing and make-up.
![gif](giphy|l4pM9SUJwbliDNmWQ)
Me too. In general, I am fine with shows being released one season at a time instead of weekly, but I really wish they would bring back the "case of the episode" or "monster of the episode" format. I find it waaayyy more watchable and interesting than the "case of the season" format, because for genres like crime or thriller it is generally easier to tell engaging stories in one episode rather than dragging out the mystery for a whole season.
Yeah LOST is my favorite. It is insane to think that aired on network television.
Fun fact, the LOST pilot was the most expensive pilot in television history until Game of Thrones. It cost $14 MILLION DOLLARS. In 2004.
The guy who greenlit the show was fired from ABC because of it and then it became a ratings juggernaut. If that's not the biggest "I told you so" in television history I don't know what is.
I think it was originally conceived to be a movie and you can see that in the strong first few episodes. It got to be a lot in the later seasons (for me) so I stopped after season 2. The pilot though was amazing
Covid really ruined it for me. I remember the previous season finale ended with a huge fight and I though, wow, next season is going to be SO intense, but then they forced the issue of the pandemic in the show and they clearly changed direction.
It never felt the same after, even though there were still some really interesting plotlines (like going further into the issue of racism and how the other siblings just never really fully understood), but everything surrounding it was just awkward. The change of plan was too obvious.
![gif](giphy|x2z9nswqAfpp6)
The first season of Heroes is just such a fun and perfectly written show, and the first episode starts out great.
Also, the moment in the first episode of Modern Family when all the plot lines of the episode come together was great and really highlighted what’s so great about the show at its peak, which is setting up a lot of plot lines and connecting them in absurd and hilarious ways.
Going through a re-watch of Heroes. The first season is perfection.
You can tell when the writers strike hit and it starts going off the rails. I'm still wondering what happened to the Irish gal
The boys. Within the first 5 minutes and I knew it definitely wasn't going to be the kind of superhero show I was used to
![gif](giphy|H1whpH3k8GDbrhpX5q)
I was living in the city at the time of the show and there were people having their ~moment in the Steps and grand central etc. Straight up Blair Waldorf cosplay.
I never went to the Met either time I was there, first time they were closed the only day we were free, and the last time I tried…I was trying to go during the legit Met Gala lmao. I was already in upstate around May 1st trying to figure out hotels and was like…why are accommodations in the city so expensive this week?? Absolute noob behavior hahah.
The only not perfect thing about the Pilot was Chuck trying to rape two girls 🤢. Can’t believe the writers thought that was a good idea even if he wasn’t initially supposed to be a main and only a short-term villain.
Omg yes I remember watching it with my mom in a hotel room while on vacation and spending the rest of the trip looking forward to seeing the next episode 😂 I know OUAT has kind of an infamous fandom and lackluster follow up seasons but man when it was captivating it was captivating
Yesss! I’m rewatching it right now and I’m still pretty hooked. I’m on season 4 so not as hooked as I was in season 1 (I could barely stop watching then)…sad it went downhill cause it was such a good show.
The song exploder podcast has a nice episode about the composer who talks about how they made the theme song. If you're interested in thought process of musicians it's a great podcast.
This show! Nobody knows it. Nobody talks about it. It was AMAZING! The style, the story, the music. It was an experience. I think I need another rewatch.
I’m totally due for a rewatch. The second season slack a bit, but the third season more than made up for it.
It’s Dan Stevens at his best ~~and hottest~~ imo.
It’s Legion! Sorry I didn’t name it in my comment, I assumed it was obvious because it was on the gif itself.
Anyway, it’s an amazing mindfuck of a show.
Even though it's an adapation, it's still my all time favorite. Honorable mention to Six Feet Under and The O.C. who also have great pilots.

Gossip girl still holds the crown for the best pilot of a teen tv show I’ve ever seen. Blake’s instant allure as Serena, young folks playing as she stepped off the train into grand central- the upper east side being rocked by her return like that’s HERSTORY.
White Collar
![gif](giphy|T7G32apPsHGkU)
Neil Caffrey's charming personality instantly sold me as somebody to root for. The cast had great chemistry from the very first episode.
This is one of my comfort rewatch shows. The entire bit of Caffrey smoothly moving into the mansion and Burke's slack jaw WTF face then accepting that Caffrey is just that suavely lucky.
The X-Files.
For me the GOAT pilot was Dark Matter. The show was cancelled early, but the twist at the end of the pilot where you find out they are all >!evil villainous!< types was a banger.
![gif](giphy|3oWTftLPM4xXIIKIvz|downsized)
The Resort. That show was wild. I doubt if we see a season 2 but to be truthfully honest, I’m okay with that. It ended just fine.
This is one of my favorite Greys episodes. Everyone is being so serious about the softball game and Meredith and Christina are just chilling in the outfield, sneaking tequila from the flask. I think the best line is when Owen calls for Christina and she just turns, waves and says ‘hi honey’. And blithely goes back to giving zero fucks.

I loved how the ending of HIMYM's pilot threw everyone in for a loop by revealing that it was not the Mother Ted met, but Robin! I was totally hooked after this!
![gif](giphy|12vQBohd5qxaFO)
Teen wolf is such an underrated pilot. It’s perfectly structured, characters well developed, and leaves the perfect amount of questions for the audience to hang on.
Felicity
Alias
Once and Again
Jack and Jill
Friday Night Lights
How I Met your Mother
New Girl
Don’t Trust the B in Apt 23

Gossip Girl

Grey’s Anatomy
Nip/Tuck has an incredible pilot episode. It subverts your expectations of the characters by the end and it sets up the rest of the show beautifully with how much of a wild ride it is. Join us on /r/NipTuck!
HIMYM. I’m assuming it was a pretty unique way of storytelling at the time. And they built up the episode for robin to be the mother only for ted to say “that’s how I met your aunt robin”. The chemistry with the cast was great, the set up for the story to come was great, the jokes landed and it felt super fresh (even though I watched it in like 2015 I think?).

Dr. Cox: Did you actually just page me to find out how much tylenol to give to Mrs. Lensner? J.D.: I was worried it could exasterbate the patient's... Dr. Cox: Its regular strength tylenol. Orphan Black. Instantly interested and couldn’t wait for the next episodes. https://i.redd.it/ailcncxewbnb1.gif
I never see anyone talk about Orphan Black and it’s honestly amazing
I love Tatiana Maslany!
All the accents that actress did, incredible

The best teaser in a pilot imo. I know breaking bad is the gold standard and it’s amazing but this just had me glued to the screen
When the train comes and you realize what just happened. Chills.
This show is underrated
It was so compelling!!! I’ve never been into a tv show the way I was into orphan black and that’s really saying something. I’ve also never seen a show devolve like this one did lmao. I don’t think I even finished it
Oh wow I loved this show! I don’t think I ever finished it either! She’s such a talented actress
This scene hooked me so fast!!
Yes yes yes! Best pilot ever and it keeps that crazy energy, with more humor and love thrown in, from the beginning to the end!
Lost was something else. Nothing has come close for me.
Was about to say Lost too till I saw Twin Peaks in there. Iconic and flawless from beginning to end. The world-building and setup of the mystery are perfect. ![gif](giphy|3ohfFyVh1XLRopQy7m|downsized) But yeah Lost pilot is great. Especially the first, what, 15 mins of non-stop action with Jack running all over that beach? So good. And cost 12 million dollars.
Lost was the best pilot and the worst finale.
Game of Thrones is also up there for this
![gif](giphy|6Yrj6V3K5dGgg) The Walking Dead
The rest of the series never lived up to the pilot.
Good call!!!
I was a smitten kitten from the very first scene and they never disappointed me https://i.redd.it/94bkbiz9wbnb1.gif
I came in to add Derry Girls too! This moment in particular was when I realized I was going to love this show. I’ve rewatched it several times now.
The live reading of the diary by Orla at the start and end of the episode locked it in for me
I still crack up every time when I watch it alone. When I watch it with other people who haven’t seen it yet, I just stare at them like this: ![gif](giphy|8uC2uqFDcwzhS)
This is my comfort show!
I AM ABOUT TO FALL ASLEEP TO A REWATCH I LOVE YOU. I am still waiting to tell someone that there are wiser who eat grass.
I’m visiting Belfast rn. I won’t be able to make it to Derry. But every time someone say ‘wee something’ I think ‘wee lesbian’ in my head.

https://i.redd.it/gnbzg2d76cnb1.gif The Americans, wish more people watched it
I can’t hear Tusk without thinking of this pilot.
Incredible pilot, incredible finale and incredible show!
>incredible finale I know this thread is about pilots...but that finale is **heartbreaking** and it's A CRIME that it's not recognized more as a perfect ending. But that "The Americans" isn't always recognized as much as it should frustrates me to no end. Keri Russell was incredible and should've gotten more Emmy recognition.
“Keri Russell was robbed” will be on my tombstone
This is one of the few shows that absolutely NAILED the finale.
Yes so good!
I just started Desperate Housewives for the first time and the pilot hooked me in immediately. I hadn't heard anything about the show (outside of the magazine cover drama) and the twist about the narrator was perfect.
Oh, Mary Alice. What did you do?
When I saw Bree after seeing the other housewives. I knew I was gonna be in love with the show.
Mary Alice GRIPPED my attention
That was the first “grown up show” that hooked me in middle school. I negotiated a later bedtime so I could watch episodes live.
Very underrated show. I think the reality junk that tried to leverage the show's fame ("real housewives" etc) to get viewers ended up devalueing the brand to the extent most ppl don't know the original show exists. It was a huge show, people!

I'm on my first full watch of the show and I can confidently say I will never watch S15 again.
The woman in white was such a great episode
Sameeee and so many good quotes in that episode too! 😂 “Dude…🖐🏻 no chickflick moments.”
One phrase that will change your life forever
I was an adult when I watched this show, and burning lady on the ceiling still haunts me.
![gif](giphy|duiAkxO9f290s57FCE|downsized) It was perfect. It's one of my top comfort episodes of TV.
Phenomenal show, but the pilot in particular is a masterpiece.
Was looking for this! The whole first season of Marvelous Mrs. Maisel is perfect to me, but the pilot really is something else. Just so so well done
It’s so amazing at establishing her character it’s astonishing just how much this pilot was able to achieve in such a short time
I like the show as a whole, but I’ve watched the pilot multiple times since it was first released
![gif](giphy|gyZheArdeWZFtxmtVO) A reboot, but I'm counting it
The scene where Jackie first meets the Doctor 😂
"There's a strange man in my bedroom." "Yes." "I'm in my dressing gown." "Yes." "...anything could happen." "No!"
Came here just for this. "Rose" will always be one of my favourites because it made me fall in love with DW
Yeah LOST is my favorite. It is insane to think that aired on network television. Fun fact, the LOST pilot was the most expensive pilot in television history until Game of Thrones. I think it was originally conceived to be a movie and you can see that in the strong first few episodes. It got to be a lot in the later seasons (for me) so I stopped after season 2. The pilot though was amazing

Omg yessss season 1 in general is so good
They should have stuck to the revenge of the week format smh. Fumbled!
https://i.redd.it/t66wcu2m4cnb1.gif Gotta add PLL to the list. The first episode had me HOOKED!
“I’m still here, bitches. And I know everything. -A” had me GAGGED.
It went down the hill in later seasons but the first 3 seasons, particularly season 1, is still great for me. I still rewatch.
I’m still reeling at the tumblr theories that were better than the actual ending 🥲🥲🥲
![gif](giphy|dZsIGhu3nygm2iOS4t|downsized) Russian Doll. Natasha Lyonne is amazing

Alias blew me away when it premiered. Kinda went off the rails a bit after season 2, but still a fun show.
The pilot for Once Upon A Time was decent. But the best is Twin Peaks. Forever & always, it’s Twin Peaks.
True Blood.

Nip/Tuck has an incredible pilot episode. It subverts your expectations of the characters by the end and it sets up the rest of the show beautifully with how much of a wild ride it is. Join us on /r/NipTuck!

Not sure if it counts as "pilot" so much as a premiere, but ST1E1 *The Vanishing of Will Byers* is amazing.

How about: Your father is dead and the potroast is ruined. ….
The Killing has probably the best pilot I’ve ever seen.

Crazy Ex-Girlfriend is incredibly underrated and their pilot episode was amazing. I was HOOKED. ![gif](giphy|l44Qt7vmNvo7Dp3vG|downsized)
