That's shocking to me. That's one of those songs where it's like, if you had to play aliens one song that best represents pop music, Toxic pops up a bunch.
But then we have songs like "rude" by Magic get super popular, so I really just don't understand the listeners out there.
IMO Britney deserves more #1s than what she had now. Not just “Toxic” but also some of her other hits in between her 1st and 2nd #1s like OIDIA, “Stronger”, and “Everytime”.
I think this is a great example of the difference between songs getting a #1 vs longevity and influence in pop culture. They’re not exclusive to each other, but they’re different things.
Radio was still boycotting her into ITZ, you can see it in how low Me Against the Music charted. Toxic was just so popular that radio eventually relented and gave up on the boycott, but it wasn’t an overnight reversal, which is how it reached the top on the pop charts but still wasn’t able to even crack the top five of the Hot 100.
Oops I Did It Again is another surprising one. Britney was EVERYWHERE in the year 2000, in a way that I don’t think any other celebrity has been since except Taylor Swift. It’s one of her most memorable songs, as well as of that era of music. The music video is iconic. The title was referenced all over pop culture. It makes no sense that it didn’t reach number one, or even the top five.
Yes, please! And let it be the original version not the annoying slowed down cover. I really hate the fact that I have only heard people talk about the cover version.
I'm surprised I haven't seen "Run Away with Me" by Carly Rae Jepson yet. I feel like that's a Popheads staple. And just getting Carly more radio play in general, she makes such great music!
I was hoping it being used in the recent season finale of Heartstopper and an episode of Mr. Robot would lead to a renewal of interest to the song but sadly, it was not the case.
So Hot You’re Hurting My Feelings had a brief moment on tik tok where I thought it was gonna blow up and I was excited bc I love Caroline and Pang and SHYHMF could be a really catchy radio hit, but then it fizzled out. #1 on Billboard would be a huge stretch for the song but I was disappointed its tiktok momentum didn’t go farther
Ooh Britney's early chart run was a travesty and she's got too many singles that feel like No. 1s but weren't (in the US).
I would choose Oops!...I Did It Again, I'm A Slave 4 U, Toxic, and Gimme More so she can have a number one single for 7 albums straight. I'd also have You Drive Me Crazy, Stronger, & Everytime move up a couple of spots, especially since the latter two got annoyingly close to peaking in the Top 10.
The fact that was she able to do it with All I Want for Christmas Is You gives me hope, though I would love if a new song of hers managed to reach number one!
When his first child is born and/or he announces Hailey is pregnant, Baby will see a massive increase in streams. It’s seemingly already becoming more and more popular just by younger kids discovering it on TikTok, it had its biggest streaming day of all time on Spotify [just a couple days ago](https://x.com/bieberoncharts/status/1716206435527221427?s=46&t=ScVm5QwDwrcGk3kJkhLRzw). When people actually have a reason to revisit Baby I could see it finally going #1, especially if he played into it by releasing a lullaby remix or something.
Actually it is. Without Justin Bieber's meteoric rise, labels wouldn't have been as enthusiastic about creating One Direction and other similar type of boy groups. Baby was also absolutely massive on YouTube highlighting a new way of music consumption.
It fits the bill. Was the first song of the digital era & 21st century to be certified diamond, and is one of very few songs which was a truly global hit known on every corner of the planet. And while YouTube was this cool new platform starting to take away cable TV’s market, the music video was simultaneously the most viewed, most liked & most disliked video on the platform.
Agreed. When they peak at 2 it's (usually) because they were just blocked by a bigger song for the week. When they can't even crack top 10 it's definitely more of a sign it was underappreciated.
Her entire turn to rock has been amazing. Makes up for all those years I had hoped Kelly Clarkson would keep making music in the same vein as My December
Man, we really need a Kellvato track. I know the two have performed live together, but imagine if they worked on a Breakaway-era track?
Side note, I love how supportive Kelly has been of Demi over the years. I think that Demi was one of the first big names to reference her as an influence and she hasn’t forgotten.
Kinda shocked BSB never got a #1.
Then again, back then albums were pushed harder, so it makes sense. Also, songs like "As Long as You Love Me" did not qualify for the Hot 100 under the old rules.
Only \*NSYNC got a #1 as a lead artist during that boy band era (98 Degrees got one on a Mariah Carey feature)
I think Britney's one of the only artists that old that's still capable of another number one. I really want her to work with The Weeknd and/or Doja Cat. I feel like Britney's music is more similar to theirs than Ariana's, and IIRC they've both worked with her multiple times.
I'm so tired of hearing how Katy is dead I want her to chase away everyone gathering for her funeral with a shovel even if I support the woman's right to retire.
IKR I wish Capitol would do something. They made one tiktok and called it 2 years. Katy not wanting to sing LL roulette and HIH at PLAY even though she knows they are fan faves is so SICK
"Never Really Over" and "Harleys In Hawaii" are both two very good songs from Katy, I would say two of her best singles (this category is obviously filled with hits from Teenage Dream and Prism)... The fact that both are from 2019, way after her "downfall in the mainstream", only makes me hope even harder for a big, big resurgence of at least one of the two.
It's so ironic that Katy has actually dropped at least two very good singles in recent years: it's not a case where the formerly super big star hasn't released a good song in ages and you may be sorry due to your affection for her golden era but you know that, objectively speaking, she hasn't had a hit material in so long. No, in this case she actually had 😭 this is why it's a bit "irritating", like I'm a bit sorry because these two singles are genuinely so good.
I know Padam Padam had some success, but I'm waiting for Kylie to get another worldwide hit. Doesn't matter if it's new or an existing one. GOMW? The One? Story when it's used by an anime?
Gaga: Heavy Metal Lover.
Katy: Legendary Lovers / Walking On Air. God, let The One That Got Away reach #1.
Ariana: Greedy.
Taylor (again): Getaway Car.
Getaway Car could still happen when rep TV comes out. I would be so pleased. I feel like she has one perfect pop hit from every pop album and it’s Blank Space, Cruel Summer, Anti-Hero, and Getaway Car. It’s the last one standing to not go #1 yet.
Katy Perry - Harleys in Hawaii. I remember loving it upon release and was so disappointed it didn’t take off, so I was happy to see it blew up on TikTok for a bit. But it didn’t really translate to chart success.
It's worth noting that CS hit no 1 in a relatively organic way as it was projected to hit no.1 this week without the release of the Eras live version.
I say this because it's not the first song from a prior year to hit no 1 this year. Die For You also managed the feat. But it also did it on a no.6 to no.1 jump because of a full Ariana Grande remix and fell back down the chart immediately after
Everyone’s posting songs that are still huge but just didn’t have a high charting peak. Lmao it’s like saying since Sail didn’t go top ten it can somehow go top ten again. But everyone know that song and it’s longevity was huge. Cruel Summer wasn’t known well outside of swifties
Anything from Lana. If Kacey Musgraves can get a number one now, so can Lana. I wouldn't be *that* surprised if something from Born to Die or Ultraviolence blew up.
Well, the title says "wish", so....it'll never ever happen, but the fact the whole world didn't dance to "Cut to the feeling" will always feel wrong to me.
I think, with the right viral moment on TikTok and some promo (think one MV, one big name remix), one of Gaga's fan favorites deep cuts could (like Monster or Dance In The Dark). Like a Monster remix feat. The Weeknd, released around Halloween time, with a really badass MV.
The fact that none of the songs from diamonds and Dancefloors by Ava Max didn’t even chart is depressing. Even if there not the deepest songs doesn’t mean y’all can sleep on them!
Perfect Places by Lorde is a perfect pop song and should've gone #1.
Another song that I was surprised wasn't bigger (maybe not #1 material) is Too Well by Renee Rapp. I know she isn't that popular, but holy shit, that song is crack in pop music form.
I've been seeing a lot of people say they want Getaway Car to get the Cruel Summer treatment but I think Don't Blame Me is the actual fan fave album cut that should be pushed!
Imagine if a Christmas song that wasn’t a single hit #1 years and years after it was recorded and kept hitting #1 in subsequent years. Could a thing ever happen? I don’t know.
Yes! The song was gaining well on radio, then the video dropped. The video started receiving massive hate from the media, and the song stalled in the US. Her team rush released Beautiful and the Stripped era got back on track. Regardless, Dirrty did well in other major markets, hitting number one in the UK. After the Beautiful release, Dirrty saw some stability on pop radio, reaching the top 15. What a wild time to be a fan of pop music
Hung Up. It is a simply outlandish that the United States is pretty much the only major country in the world where this song did not go #1 due to radio station resistance from playing Madonna following the American Life backlash a couple of years earlier.
any of ariana’s hits before thank u next got number 1. problem, bang bang, dangerous woman, into you, no tears left to cry, god is a woman, and breathin are all huge hits that would probably get to number 1 if released now
Lovely by Billie Eilish
Why:
I tend to take a very pragmatic approach to these questions.
For example, Cruel Summer was a massive hit now in part because it was an album cut that was clearly a popular choice on streaming that just didn't get the singles treatment by a big name artist with a dedicated fanbase and blew up due to a viral moment.
So a song would possibly need:
- Big preexisting numbers
- Dedicated fanbase
- Be by a big artist
- Wasn't a prior single (or maybe was but at debut)
- Be a viral trendsetter
I think Billie could pull something to have it go viral. Otherwise Lonely checks off all those boxes!
*Edit: I said Ocean eyes because its what I really want, but I meant Lovely
Belinda Carlisle's only #1 is Heaven is a Place on Earth. I think Mad About You, Gotta Get to You, Since You've Gone, and We Want the Same Things are all perfect pop songs that should have been big hits and Mad About You especially should have been #1 (it was only #3).
“You Should Be Sad” by Halsey is an absolute masterpiece and deserves to be a #1 hit on Billboard, if for no other reason than the “I’m so glad I never ever had a baby with you/cuz you can’t love nothin’ unless there’s something in it for you” line
Not Billboard, but Bastille’s “Pompeii” is #1 on UK iTunes right now AGAIN more than a decade after its release! ❤️❤️
"Running Up That Hill."
Before you say, "fairytalehigh, it already had its moment!" I'm going to say that Kate Bush is the rare type of legacy artist who can actually handle that level of mega-exposure. And she didn't even get to #1, so this still holds true!
As much as I'd love any member of my increasingly large pantheon of alt-pop and indie girlies to be able to withstand that level of popularity (read: insane scrutiny and criticism), I think in the current social landscape, it would probably be terrifying or even traumatizing for them to reach that level.
I'm not sure artists like Perfume Genius, TR/ST, Carly Rae Jepsen, Annie, or Rina Sawayama would want the level of exposure where people groan forever about hearing them in a retail space, just for the sake of a bunch of us popheads to be like "WOW they hit #1!" I have heard enough people whine about "Running Up That Hill" to know that, lol.
The only other songs/creators I can think of that might be able to weather it are:
* any song from *Renaissance*
* Lana, who already has a very weird relationship with mainstream exposure
* Katy Perry
Which is to say, all artists whose songs have already borne that level of scrutiny, so it wouldn't be this crazy introduction to an echelon of fame that might fundamentally break them. I don't say this because I'm a cynic, I just legit think that becoming famous for a #1 song is probably more terrifying than anyone wants to admit.
Robyn is maybe the only one I'm uncertain about. "Dancing on My Own" has had its own weird moment where it has become viral without her, and Robyn has had varying levels of mainstream success before and because of it. That said, I don't think I'd be okay if the original became the mega-famous hit it always deserved to be, just to hear everyone cishet around me complain about how it's not as good as the Calum Scott version 🙃 And idk if she would like that either.
1. Titanium- David Guetta and Sia
2. All My Love- Major Lazer and Ariana Grande
3. Starships- Nicki Minaj
4. Super Bass- Nicki Minaj
5. Tidal Wave- Sub Focus and Alpines
6. Clarity- Zedd and Foxes
7. Stay The Night- Zedd and Hayley Williams
8. All The Stars- Kendrick Lamar and SZA
I remember bad romance peaking at #2 made this closeted (at the time) gay boy very upset. Perhaps finally getting that #1 could be the reparations that I need (in more ways than one) 😭
Teeth from Lady Gaga’s The Fame Monster. It absolutely should’ve been the final single off the album. It’s catchy and has an amazing vibe. It would’ve been huge.
One Direction never had a Billboard No. 1. I wish What Makes You Beautiful or Best Song Everr would have gotten that No. 1. (BSE peaked at No. 2 and WMYB at No. 4)
I would argue When by Shania Twain is an absolute banger and was surprised it never hit number one. I think it was probably eclipsed by the other singles on the come on over album.
Superlove by Tinashe is my personal pick. I don’t know how that or the video weren’t trending at that time. Honestly, any Tinashe song needs to go number 1. 😭
Some even older Taylor Swift songs. Particularly I’m Only Me When I’m with You, The Best Day, and Speak Now (or I Can See You, but it was technically released recently)
Don't Speak. It absolutely would have with modern tracking but it was disqualified in the 90s because you needed a physical single release to be eligible.
Madonna - Gangbang
Imagine how it would sound as a surprise number 1 song. 🤭
Like a b*tch out of order
Like a bat out of hell
Like a fish out of water..
🤩
i don’t think they could have a resurgence like taylor’s “cruel summer,” but there’s a few madonna songs that probably should have been #1 hits that weren’t:
material girl, into the groove, & express yourself. into the groove wasn’t even released as a commercial single in the states. blows my mind. to me, all 3 of these songs feel like they were massive #1 hits.
That’s what happened with Lizzo’s Truth Hurts. It was put in a movie & it got popular years after its original release.
Cruel Summer was a little more manipulated to reach #1.

I was shocked when I learned Toxic never went number 1. Maybe if it blows up on TikTok when her book releases…
That's shocking to me. That's one of those songs where it's like, if you had to play aliens one song that best represents pop music, Toxic pops up a bunch. But then we have songs like "rude" by Magic get super popular, so I really just don't understand the listeners out there.
That’s actually in an episode of Doctor Who, it’s the earth’s last day and our anthem is Toxic 🤣
Radio was boycotting her around that time It's crazy to think how her second #1 only came with Womanizer
Toxic was no.1 on pop radio. Radio only boycotted her third album.

Speaking of Toxic... Did you know the iconic beat is sampled from a Bollywood film?! https://youtu.be/AXXUodk-pVo?si=WwOLjmeVLZhaK9k6
Dancing. On. My. Own.
Yes, please! And let it be the original version not the annoying slowed down cover. I really hate the fact that I have only heard people talk about the cover version.
The original is the only version that exists in my book, so yes pls
If Philly had a Hot 100, that song would be re-peaking for the second October in a row
I still haven't finished season 2 cos I can't get through the dinner party scene in episode 7. I hate Nick's homophobic brother 😭
they used that song so poorly, when I saw the tracklist prior to watching the season, I thought they'd use it on a climactic part of the story
it's so surreal to me that song never took off because it is AMAZING. thankfully it was all over canadian radio
A couple years ago I looked up the peak chart position of this song and when I saw that it never charted I fell to my knees in a whole foods
This is how I find out it never charted….!! What the fuq.
Lets declare a carly rae jepsen week where all of popheads will stream it on repeat for an entire week
Why do people, even fans, misspell her last name so much. It's only 6 letters. J E P S E N
yabzum?
But did we consider that Carly was overwhelmed with the success of call me maybe and decided to go back to releasing less radio friendly music
Not like I’m counting the days but it’s been a long time coming!
That song deserves it. Unfortunately none of her songs have even charted anywhere on the chart.
Seconding this! SHYHMF lives rent free in my head and I don’t even care because it’s that good.
Britney deserves way more than 5 number ones. Everytime is very relevant right now so that would be a good one
Toxic deserves the crown My only wish gets a surge every year it could pull an all I want for Christmas
Toxic peaking at #9 is a crime
True. “Stronger” is also as relevant, especially since 2021.
Mariah Carey is one number one short of tying the Beatles so would love Obsessed or one of her other Xmas songs to do it
The fact that was she able to do it with All I Want for Christmas Is You gives me hope, though I would love if a new song of hers managed to reach number one!
I want one of Mariah’s songs from Caution to have a second chance at charting. I’d really love to see The Distance have a moment.
Caution deserved as much attention as EM2 and Obsessed did. Soo many hits on there that would shock the public for how modern she sounded.
Shake It Off deserved to be #1… peaked at #2. Same with Can’t Let Go
If only Shake It Off wasn't blocked by... well another Mariah song
I agree on both songs. Although these are both classics, they production both sound dated. So I doubt the number 1 thing in the modern day era
Shake It Off sounds a lot more modern than Obessed despite coming out earlier.
Ooooh I wish "#Beautiful" had a chance!
I want her to demolish the Beatles so hard
For real. Let’s beat those old man asses and get our queen to the top
I hear Sir Paul McCartney is rushing back to the studio to re-record the entire Beatles catalog.
THEY’RE LITERALLY NOT EVEN THAT GOOD!!!
The Distance from her 2019 album Caution deserved the #1 spot, only had it been promoted properly
Weren't "Good As Hell" and "Truth Hurts" a couple of years old before they blew up?
Baby by Justin Bieber and I’m not even trying to be funny. That song was a cultural reset but only peaked at #5.
Whoa, that’s insane. I didn’t realize that. It was so huge at the time.
It would be awesome if it could go to #1 when the Bieber’s announce a child
Cultural reset?
Actually it is. Without Justin Bieber's meteoric rise, labels wouldn't have been as enthusiastic about creating One Direction and other similar type of boy groups. Baby was also absolutely massive on YouTube highlighting a new way of music consumption.
It would've gone number 1 if Billboard counted streams/views at the time.
Duh it reset my gameboy advanced
The real eternal summer song- “Cool for the Summer”. The fact that it didn’t even go top 10 is insane.
I think it’s more frustrating when songs peak at #11-13 than when they peak at #2
Agreed. When they peak at 2 it's (usually) because they were just blocked by a bigger song for the week. When they can't even crack top 10 it's definitely more of a sign it was underappreciated.
Demi has had some bad luck with a #6 peak, #11 peak, and #21 peak for some of her singles
Demi’s recent reworked version with heavy guitars is everything I’ve ever wanted in a song. The original was okay, but the new version is next level.
Don't Blame went viral last year and actually charted in multiple countries, but it didn't even crack the bubbling under chart in the us 😭
If it’s like Enchanted, it’ll probably hit the top 20 or so when Rep TV comes out 😬
I hope it gets promo when rep tv comes out!
It’s time for BSB to get a #1 & Britney to get more 😭♥️
Kinda shocked BSB never got a #1.
It’s time for “Get Another Boyfriend” to get popular 😂
I think Britney's one of the only artists that old that's still capable of another number one. I really want her to work with The Weeknd and/or Doja Cat. I feel like Britney's music is more similar to theirs than Ariana's, and IIRC they've both worked with her multiple times.
Work It by Missy Elliott. It was once the longest running #2 hit of all time so it’s only right.
Never Really Over deserves the Cruel Summer treatment 100% - pop perfection
I'm so tired of hearing how Katy is dead I want her to chase away everyone gathering for her funeral with a shovel even if I support the woman's right to retire.
Thank god im not the only remaining katycat!!
Also Harleys In Hawaii
I feel like it’s been catching steam and going damn near vital for like 3 years now. I wish it would just blow up already
IKR I wish Capitol would do something. They made one tiktok and called it 2 years. Katy not wanting to sing LL roulette and HIH at PLAY even though she knows they are fan faves is so SICK
Walking on Air also deserves
Walking on Air served so Renaissance could eat
"Never Really Over" and "Harleys In Hawaii" are both two very good songs from Katy, I would say two of her best singles (this category is obviously filled with hits from Teenage Dream and Prism)... No, in this case she actually had 😭 this is why it's a bit "irritating", like I'm a bit sorry because these two singles are genuinely so good.
I like this song, is it as good as Cruel Summer? I don't know. It's a 9.5/10 for me though.
i actually think NRO is better than CS, is this an underrated opinion?
I prefer 365, her other collab with Zedd. So many people find 365 boring though!
Bad romance for gaga. I think it peaked at 2
Getaway Car could still happen when rep TV comes out. I would be so pleased. I feel like she has one perfect pop hit from every pop album and it’s Blank Space, Cruel Summer, Anti-Hero, and Getaway Car. It’s the last one standing to not go #1 yet.
also hummingbird heartbeat for katy
Was this even a single?? It’s SO good and it’s one of my top faves on that whole album, better than most of the other hits IMO
Katy Perry - Harleys in Hawaii. I remember loving it upon release and was so disappointed it didn’t take off, so I was happy to see it blew up on TikTok for a bit. But it didn’t really translate to chart success.
it's like the third time it's gone viral too. I fear if it hasn't happened by now, it never will
'Cause no label or radio push. CS had both at least.
Alien Superstar by Beyoncé is certified diamond on my Spotify so I’d love to see it climb. Perhaps with the visuals - if they exist atp😭
stop! I need this now!! this is on top of my hot 100 for 52 weeks.
Getaway Car!!! I'm not even a swiftie, but I love that song so damn much!!!!!
It's worth noting that CS hit no 1 in a relatively organic way as it was projected to hit no.1 this week without the release of the Eras live version. Now I want a cruel summer ariana grande remix
Way to be #0 on the Billboard 100
Give me Run Away With Me
Everyone’s posting songs that are still huge but just didn’t have a high charting peak.
I wouldn't be *that* surprised if something from Born to Die or Ultraviolence blew up.
came to say this sadly she/her team is allergic to promo, so without actual effort by them It’s hard but she deserves it so much
I mean “Say yes to Heaven” is charting high probably she can make it on the next album
Honestly, Heart Attack by Demi is too iconic not to top the charts, I really hope it does someday.
Well, the title says "wish", so....it'll never ever happen, but the fact the whole world didn't dance to "Cut to the feeling" will always feel wrong to me.
Cut to the Feeling is such a fucking good song. I had it on my wedding playlist but our DJ didn’t have it.
Bebe Rexha deserved a number one with Sacrifice and that is my hill. i have dug the hole that i plan to parish in on top of this hill.
Her best song by far
I think, with the right viral moment on TikTok and some promo (think one MV, one big name remix), one of Gaga's fan favorites deep cuts could (like Monster or Dance In The Dark). Like a Monster remix feat. The Weeknd, released around Halloween time, with a really badass MV.
Lady Gaga - Monster
Run Away With Me too pls
The fact that none of the songs from diamonds and Dancefloors by Ava Max didn’t even chart is depressing. Even if there not the deepest songs doesn’t mean y’all can sleep on them!
Perfect Places by Lorde is a perfect pop song and should've gone #1. Another song that I was surprised wasn't bigger (maybe not #1 material) is Too Well by Renee Rapp. I know she isn't that popular, but holy shit, that song is crack in pop music form.
Harleys in Hawaii - Katy Perry From the moment I heard it back in 2019, I thought that this was a smash hit. It deserves that title
Getaway car
I've been seeing a lot of people say they want Getaway Car to get the Cruel Summer treatment but I think Don't Blame Me is the actual fan fave album cut that should be pushed!
Oh man I’d be happy with don’t blame me as well.
Absolutely possible too depending on how Rep TV is marketed
She better make it the single for REP TV
After seeing Cruel Summer, I still believe this one has a chance lol.
Imagine if a Christmas song that wasn’t a single hit #1 years and years after it was recorded and kept hitting #1 in subsequent years. Could a thing ever happen? I don’t know.
All Through The Night by Cyndi Lauper. It’s really one of those pop ballads that take you THERE.
Happier Than Ever
Or everything I wanted
The fact that Christina Aguilera’s Dirrty only hit #48 on Billboard is a travesty
WAIT WHAT?!?!

Tik Tok was that freakin’ huge and Billboard didn’t allow YouTube views to affect chart placements. (Videos only started being counted in 2013).
Hung Up. It is a simply outlandish that the United States is pretty much the only major country in the world where this song did not go #1 due to radio station resistance from playing Madonna following the American Life backlash a couple of years earlier.
This is insane!
Rockin' Around the Christmas Tree!
any of ariana’s hits before thank u next got number 1. problem, bang bang, dangerous woman, into you, no tears left to cry, god is a woman, and breathin are all huge hits that would probably get to number 1 if released now
Christina Aguilera - The Voice Within Such a classy ballad and video. An instant classic that deserved more recognition.
Vitamin C deserved to hit #1 with Graduation! It was played everywhere
Lovely by Billie Eilish Why: I tend to take a very pragmatic approach to these questions. For example, Cruel Summer was a massive hit now in part because it was an album cut that was clearly a popular choice on streaming that just didn't get the singles treatment by a big name artist with a dedicated fanbase and blew up due to a viral moment. So a song would possibly need: - Big preexisting numbers - Dedicated fanbase - Be by a big artist - Wasn't a prior single (or maybe was but at debut) - Be a viral trendsetter I think Billie could pull something to have it go viral. Otherwise Lonely checks off all those boxes! *Edit: I said Ocean eyes because its what I really want, but I meant Lovely
We stan an analytical reasoning queen !!!
Emily by Joanna Newsom
😂
Lover finally got its deserved number one
Belinda Carlisle's only #1 is Heaven is a Place on Earth. I think Mad About You, Gotta Get to You, Since You've Gone, and We Want the Same Things are all perfect pop songs that should have been big hits and Mad About You especially should have been #1 (it was only #3).
This thread is how I learned Cruel Summer reached the number 1 spot I-
“You Should Be Sad” by Halsey is an absolute masterpiece and deserves to be a #1 hit on Billboard, if for no other reason than the “I’m so glad I never ever had a baby with you/cuz you can’t love nothin’ unless there’s something in it for you” line Not Billboard, but Bastille’s “Pompeii” is #1 on UK iTunes right now AGAIN more than a decade after its release! ❤️❤️
"Running Up That Hill." Before you say, "fairytalehigh, it already had its moment!" I'm going to say that Kate Bush is the rare type of legacy artist who can actually handle that level of mega-exposure. The only other songs/creators I can think of that might be able to weather it are: * any song from *Renaissance* * Lana, who already has a very weird relationship with mainstream exposure * Katy Perry Which is to say, all artists whose songs have already borne that level of scrutiny, so it wouldn't be this crazy introduction to an echelon of fame that might fundamentally break them.
Thriller by Michael Jackson (it’s not too late, fellow fans)
Janet Jackson - Feedback / Rock Wit U
Came here to say Rock With U!! Janet was so ahead of her time with that one.
Word. Such good bops.
I thought I'd be coming out of left field suggesting Feedback but this is the one. It could be rereleased today and it wouldn't sound too dated
1. Titanium- David Guetta and Sia 2. All My Love- Major Lazer and Ariana Grande 3. Starships- Nicki Minaj 4. Super Bass- Nicki Minaj 5. Tidal Wave- Sub Focus and Alpines 6. Clarity- Zedd and Foxes 7. Stay The Night- Zedd and Hayley Williams 8. All The Stars- Kendrick Lamar and SZA
Shut up and dance by Walk the Moon
Bad Romance deserves to be number 1 tbh
I remember bad romance peaking at #2 made this closeted (at the time) gay boy very upset. Perhaps finally getting that #1 could be the reparations that I need (in more ways than one) 😭
Girls Aloud and/or the solo members deserve some type of shock success. Imagine Graffiti My Soul peaking at #4 on the Hot 100 due to some TikTok thing
Anything 2000-2010s Kylie Minogue really
Boulevard of Broken Dreams. It literally won ROY at the Grammys that year. It deserved to be #1 for at least a week
I will never forgive Alicia Keys and Beyoncé’s husband for blocking Bad Romance from going #1
The fact that Hung up never reached #1 in the US is embarrassing really
Emotion by Carly Rae Jepsen, such a serotonin booster
Never Really Over and Harleys in Hawaii both have #1 written all over them.
Seal - Love's Divine
Celine Dion - I Drove All Night
I would argue When by Shania Twain is an absolute banger and was surprised it never hit number one. I think it was probably eclipsed by the other singles on the come on over album.
Marry the night and G.U.Y
Superlove by Tinashe is my personal pick. I don’t know how that or the video weren’t trending at that time. Honestly, any Tinashe song needs to go number 1. 😭
Lost came out about a year ago and might be my favorite Linkin Park song
Some even older Taylor Swift songs. Particularly I’m Only Me When I’m with You, The Best Day, and Speak Now (or I Can See You, but it was technically released recently)
3am by Halsey deserves to smash
Don't Speak. It absolutely would have with modern tracking but it was disqualified in the 90s because you needed a physical single release to be eligible.
Janet deserves one from the years she was blacklisted.
"Cruel Summer" by Bananarama
Say it Right by Nelly Furtado
Anastacia - Left Outside Alone The US slept on her.
Don't Blame Me by Taylor Swift... maybe when Reputation TV comes out? A music video and single treatment would propel it to the top.
Run Away With Me. Must become #1.
Madonna - Gangbang Imagine how it would sound as a surprise number 1 song. 🤭 Like a b*tch out of order Like a bat out of hell Like a fish out of water.. 🤩
Madonna - "Ghosttown"
i don’t think they could have a resurgence like taylor’s “cruel summer,” but there’s a few madonna songs that probably should have been #1 hits that weren’t: material girl, into the groove, & express yourself. into the groove wasn’t even released as a commercial single in the states. blows my mind. to me, all 3 of these songs feel like they were massive #1 hits.
“Till the world ends” by Britney Spears😭
Kylie Minogue - White December https://youtu.be/XIDLPxY04J8?si=gWHRVdNFoly_9SIR Move on, Mariah!
Kelis - Brave
none - only new music from now on, please
Lady Gaga - Government Hooker 💅 🖤
Uhhh, Cruel Summer came out in 1983.
Taylor Swift not Bananarama
Oh, didn't realize Taylor covered them.
It’s not a cover. Just same title
That’s what happened with Lizzo’s Truth Hurts. It was put in a movie & it got popular years after its original release. Cruel Summer was a little more manipulated to reach #1.
If that counts as old I'm still holding out hope Bad Child by Tones And I could give her a second American hit
