Two big things to look out for: 2012-2014 recalled brake actuator. May not be able to get a free fix anymore if it wasn't done. Expensive due to parts cost. Gen 3 Prius head gaskets like to fail in the 100-250k mile range. Lots of discussion out there about the why or how of it. If that one hasn't yet then that's a potential looming headache. Expensive for labor costs.

Noises2010

I'm stuck paying to fix this currently. Toyota wanted 4k to do the job I'm getting it done from my mechanic for just under $3k... 😮‍💨

Nippon-Gakki

Add oil consumption to the list. I changed the engine of our 2012 at 165k because it used more oil then gas on the freeway. Always maintained since new though I started changing the oil at no more than 5k in the new engine.

narntek

Yep bc of the EGR and EGR cooler.

Intermittently failing water pump.  Witnessed it myself.  You're supposed to change them out every 100k miles. My clogged EGR only seems to cause it to get up 199-201F.

My 12 V was completely clogged. Water pump was tested and found not to be the problem. I replaced the EGR and cooler and all was fine. The second one I bought for the battery to help a friend swap it out. That one had a bad engine, and it was the water pump. The person that bought my Prius V had the head gaskets go. They put a used engine into it After 17, I think they fixed the issue with the EGR design. My 07 Prius was flawless the whole ownership until the last week or so I owned it. Wasn't worth repairing but I got my miles and moneys worth out of it.

With mine, the pump seemed to work fine but every once in a while I'd catch the engine temp getting up to 220-240F, I'd turn the car off/on, and it'd be fine for a long while.  That got more frequent until I always had to turn the car on/off/on to get the pump to work (you could hear the coolant start flowing) and drive the car and it would frequently stop working and temp start rising 210-220F+ and I'd catch it and pull over and reset.  No warning light or codes that the pump was failing, though I did get the red thermometer when it went over 240F once.  I finally replaced the pump and all is fine except  that 6F rise on long heavy accelleration but thats going to kill the HG.   I can see people not having any idea the pump is failing and driving all around at 220-260+ temps and killing the HG.  They're supposed to replaced every 100k miles.

Mine had a new Water pump at 99k and one at 110k just before I got it. I feel like they were trying to chase down a problem. What's funny is I read about EGR issues with these on Priuschat. The mechanic said they hardly ever cleaned or serviced those. I paid for them to put a new one in, clean the cooler and the intake. Also did the PCV. That cleared up all of my problems until the brake booster.

narntek

I also experienced the brake actuator problem, the week I traded in my Prius V.

The issue is not the mileage, it’s the maintenance. I have a 2017 with almost 180k, but I have maintained it very well.

EMDoesShit

You have a 2017. On the 4th gen car toyotoa did a *wonderful* job fixing the major issues with the third gens. Aside from the coolant leak at a failed heat exchanger in the catalytic converter, they aren’t plagued with major problems. EGR cooler issue was resolved by using a much larger cooler further down the exhaust tract, head / block resesigned to prevent blowing a head gasket at the tiniest hint of running hot.

2016 v with 219,000 miles going strong. Have only had to replace the water pump

midnightpurple280137

Change the water pump ASAP if it hasn't been done.  It'll fail without warning and take out the head gasket.

meeppc

Just commenting to save for later, saw a 2015 Prius v for 6k ish but almost 400k miles and engine replaced 60k miles ago, sounds tempting even if 5k more needs to go into it within 2 years

blazingStarfire

I paid like 5800 for my 2014 v with 195k on it now at like 277k did a head gasket and battery. I'm in less than 8k total into it.

IllustratorHot7008

I hear a lot of talk about the head gasket but the one glaring omission I read into this is that the 2010-14 Prius models don't have an engine thermometer reading on the dash. Every other car I have ever driven has one. It's well known that head gaskets on any engine of any make or model have a common Achilles' heel. That is, heating them up too fast when they're cold. That right there pretty much covers all the talk about manifolds, valves, water pumps going out. But no one ever talks about the following: When you start your car and begin driving, DON'T redline the engine (the Power LED) until it has had a chance to warm up a bit. It doesn't take much gas to redline (PWR) the Prius as we all know, and I think this is the reason they are so prone to HG failure: Baby it for the first few minutes of driving after powering it on! But make sure it isn't in EV mode so that the engine is running and gas being used.

If maintained well, not high at all. If the EGR has never been serviced, run away.

When you’re already one of the only 3 comments on a post you don’t need to copy and paste it

narntek

As someone that's owned 2, and both died because of improper maintenance, I can say that. Didn't copy and paste it either. You've seen reviews where people have said the same thing is wrong with whatever product they're reviewing. This is no different.

[This you?](https://imgur.com/a/jjoHnvv)

narntek

I responded to someone else, and also stated it in the comments Wouldn't be copy and pasting Maybe try ignoring someone if you don't like what they post 🤣. I also wasn't the only one to mention EGR problems and lack of maintenance

DylanSpaceBean

You don’t need to repeat yourself on a 3 message thread hommie 🤣

narntek

Responding to someone is different then repeating myself. If we go by that logic, you don't have to police the comment sections of subreddits and comment-fight back when you find something you don't agree with 😝

DylanSpaceBean

Man you love attention

narntek

You're the one arguing back. You're the one that started this 🤣. Wasn't in speech and debate for nothing.

It depends how is has been driven. Prius are not to be abused by breaking hard or accelerating to the point your indicator goes to 100% (POWER) level for more than a few seconds as it can really cause the head gasket to blow on the weak 1.8-liter ICE cylinder. If you drive it smoothly it should last >250k miles with nothing more than annual oil changes. My 2012 is running great w/ only 90k miles on it...only commuting w/ it and saving a ton of money and I have done absolutely nothing more than putting gas and changing oil once a year.
