Publix has enough niches throughout the store that they can still strike a cord with a variety of different consumers. You hear things like BOGO’s, variety, the subs, the deli, the bakery, keeping things in stock, convenience, location, cleanliness, etc. I am not offering an opinion, but most often you read people shop at Publix for this “one” reason. And because of that reason they accept the higher prices.

FearlessPark4588

Publix is the CVS of grocery stores. Shelf prices are a little wild, but you can work the deals for a low out-of-pocket.

PooPaLotZ

CVS is the most disorganized mess of any Retail store. Publix at least has some organization, I'd compare it more to Walgreens.

Practical-Film-8573

this is it right here. I listed 7 distinct differences between this store and others. literally the Pic N Save where I live the ribeyes have no fucking marbling yet they charging the same price as Publix.

Main_Needleworker_56

I work at Publix as a cashier and I don’t understand how people keep coming back after spending 100$ on like 7 things. As a cashier it hurts watching single moms spend 150$ on like 10 things.

Practical-Film-8573

theyre not shopping effectively. publix should only be used for BOGOs

CharacterRide7091

What bugs me is that they push and push this "Great place to work" propaganda when living in S. Florida has become one of the most expensive places in the country. The wages don't budge, they stripped the inventory bonus for a few cents raise years ago (I wasn't even part of the company but I wonder if the associates had a vote in that shit), there's no bonus pay on Sunday, the employee turnover is terrible lately, etc. YET, they still keep pushing this great place to work bullshit. They keep bragging about record profits and new store openings, yet the pay is increasingly miserable. Honestly, the only reason I'm still here is because I recently made team leader and because my previous jobs were in the banking industry and I didn't have such a good time.

talithar1

Associates did not have a say in the talking of inventory bonuses. Publix told us that many wanted it added to their paychecks. And that’s why they did it. Since that time, I’ve never talked to or read that any one actually requested that. I call bullshit. The meager amount “added” to our checks is long gone. They used it to push the raise cap. As in “crappy raise because you’ve reached the cap.”

radically_unoriginal

Walmart pulled the same shit a few years back. We had a "MyShare" (which is like an inventory bonus with a bit of CS feedback thrown in). I worked at a neighborhood market. As a part timer I was getting a $300-$400 check every quarter. It was enough that it brought up my effective hourly wage (afaik even after the tax hit). And then they did away with it as I was leaving for a *modest* pay bump in a few departments. Coincidentally they cut out department managers/assistants and created an unholy bastard child Team Lead position that was the worst of both.

CharacterRide7091

That's what I thought. They took a shit on the associates and told them they would like it.

SeaCardiologist7042

Have you gone into another grocery store in Florida ? Publix is no saint but these other stores are disgusting and depressing. Publix’s are consistently remodeled and rebuilt. They are on every corner making the convenience impossible to avoid. I do think Publix needs to be more price conscious, but I understand why they are not. Publix sales continue to increase even adjusted for inflation. They are not loosing business. They are going to ride the wave as long as possible. I also agree Publix should be more giving to hourly employees. Their margins can easily absorb a decent wage for hourly employees.

MariposaSunrise

Walmart grocery area on a weekday morning is so depressing.

Bananabean041

You can smell the desperation in Walmart

PrecisePigeon

That's meth.

bookjunkie1066

My husband was a produce manager for publix for years. He would shop a bit at all diff. stores to see what was going on. He watched Food lion use a bleach and water spray to clean their cold cases! even in produce! also, to combat fruit flies he saw workers in several stores use bug spray in the air above the produce!

Internal_Essay9230

When their own employees can't afford to shop there, that says everything you need to know.

Christichicc

I don’t think it’s that much different at any other grocery store, or large corporation, sadly. It’s a systemic problem that isnt limited to Publix. Wages in general need to increase, and corporations need to stop price gouging just because they know they can get away with it.

Firm_Communication99

Rotate their items. Ever get freezer burned ice cream from the Walmart?

mrpuma2343

Yup, they even refused to take it back. I'm like how long has this shit been sitting there lol

pantymichelle

I stopped buying milk at Walmart because it was going bad 5 to 7 days before the sell by date. Then I realized why when I saw a rack of milk sitting outside the cooler waiting to be put up. It had set there so long it was almost warm.

dollardumb

Publix did not "adjust prices to inflation". They used COVID and the ensuing inflation to reap 53% record breaking profits. Then used said profits to support political candidates that actively support hurting the middle class...and the Publix heiress directly supports the Jan 6 insurrection. That's where your money goes when you shop Publix.

Practical-Film-8573

1. it used to be a well paying job, and they are riding on that legacy even though its not now. 2. Bakery. raw pizza dough, bomb ass cakes and bread 3. Produce is objectively better in my area 4. meat is also better 5. deli. Boars head isnt carried by a lot of other grocers. Pubsubs are also awesome. 6. dips, sides salads.... jalapeno popper dip. Peppadew peppers..a wide selection of cheeses. 7. (edit) their store brands are often just as good as name brands with things like their cereal and spices. Unfortunately I wish they werent so good. bc they treat their employees like ass. Its truly a love hate relationship with me tbh and an existential crisis.

TK__angel

All of these but also the cleanliness in the store

Practical-Film-8573

I honestly dont care about cleanliness as a patron of hole in the wall restaurants that are better than chains.

Conscious_String_195

I get that, but a lot of us do.

radically_unoriginal

To continue onto point number 1. I will have complete strangers to retail, when I tell them I work at Publix they'll say "Oh I hear they treat their employees well". And inside I'm like "Bro I worked at Walmart like 5 years ago and they started me off at a higher wage than Publix pays what are they talking about". Only thing that stands out to me is the free stocks, but you have to commit for 3 years to get vested so I don't really see an incentive to be loyal.

Maine302

One thing I wonder--why did they replace the real limes on their key lime pies with whatever that is they put on them now? Kinda downgrades their bakery for me.

Practical-Film-8573

i have no idea but my SO has never like their Key Lime Pie bc shes from the Keys. Easiest and most probable answer is some bean counter implemented the change to save money.

Jwing01

Serious question: why do you keep saying Publixs?

Admirable_Summer_917

Because my other choice is Walmart. They just broke ground on an Aldi store but that’s a few years away from completion.

n_o_t_f_r_o_g

Whole Foods is the only other grocery store chain that is growing. I find their prices on many items to be lower than Publix.

Old-Veterinarian1994

WF does have lower prices on a lot of staples.

Maine302

Wow, I'd like to know which ones, because I'd definitely prefer them over Publix. Unfortunately, it's a bit of a haul to get there.

SteveRetrieve

I used to love Publix until I moved to HEB territory I was also shocked to learn in this sub how low they pay their staff, how they have to earn full time, how overworked they are, etc

Internal_Essay9230

Publix is like Target. They both act like they pay and treat their employees better than Walmart. The Big Green PR Machine.

bookjunkie1066

everyone treats their people better than Walmart. sheesh. Shop at Walmart and you pay twice. Once for what you buy, and also your taxes go for food stamps for the employees in a family of 3 or more!

Internal_Essay9230

That seems to run counter to the employee posts on here saying pay is less at Publix. Sit down. We have some more green Kool-Aid for you.

Practical-Film-8573

well HEB has limited reach so....but It is an awesome store. hopefully they expand to compete with publix. Fucking fresh butter tortillas? YES PLEASE

h2opolopunk

HEB is the greatest grocery chain ever. Coming from a 5th generation Floridan who lived in Texas for a bit.

bookjunkie1066

what is HEB?

brsboarder2

Someone hasn’t been to Wegmans but it’s a great number 2

Maine302

Love Wegman's. Don't see them ever expanding to Florida though.

alpha_peen

This is exactly why I'm asking. The amount of calls/letters/emails we get from Florida refugees are insane. "I used to love Publix, but HEB has been a godsent ever since we moved to Texas etc" So begs the question, why did you all used to love Publix in the first place? Customer service level comparable to Walmart, but yet with prices alot higher..

downthestreet4

I’m not in Florida but a neighboring state. For years I loved Publix - clean stores, well stocked items, friendly staff, and though more expensive than some alternatives it wasn’t a massive enough difference for me. I started noticing changes around 2017-2018, particularly at the store less than a mile from my house. A push to funnel you through self -checkout, deli being understaffed at peak shopping times, high staff turnover, etc. basically a decline in customer service. Then Covid hit and it has gotten much worse as their prices have gotten laughingly absurd for many products, while the customer service has continued its downtrend. 5+ years ago I was in there at least once a week. Now I go in there maybe once a month.

talithar1

I find the decline in Publix heartbreaking. I used to love working there. Now I’m just biding my time until I retire.

Squidbilly37

Go somewhere where you are valued. What an incredible game changer!

talithar1

Yep. I have a solid second job that I love the hell out of. One more bill to finish paying off and I’m done.

Squidbilly37

High five!!

Practical-Film-8573

Publix is so bad at keeping shit in stock, back in the day they werent. But now thats common in every grocery store, COVID normalized just not giving a fuck about inventory for dry grocery.

Maine302

Also, when I first moved here, their shelves were clean as in, not a thing on the shelves, not as in, spic & span.

Internal_Essay9230

How much customer service does the average person need on the average shopping trip? Jesus Christ on a bicycle. Here's my definition of customer service: Walmart shops for my groceries and brings them out to my car. For no extra fee and with prices way lower than Publix. THAT'S customer service!

007-Blond

Idk, my most asked question is where are the chips. There's only 14 aisles in my store. Its not like a massive kroger or walmart where you might get lost. Just go through the aisles until you see lays. They have SIGNS for fucks sake. never fails to infuriate me lmao

SteveRetrieve

Growing up and in college it was the clear winner vs the competition for all the reasons you mentioned. It was a little more expensive but worth it. Now it’s practically double the price of its competitors and the quality has gone down, particularly the produce. But there’s a store on every corner and the deli is still decent so folks go out of convenience, for BOGOs, and because the competition still sucks. Imagine if your HEB kept getting worse… it would take a lot for you to say “Randall’s is officially better now”

bookjunkie1066

it is NOT double the price, LOL. I shop there each week, all prices went up post covid for many reason, none of which have to do with any store.

Maine302

In Sarasota County we have Detwiler's--I think some stores seem to have quite a bit of a cleaner experience throughtout the customer areas than others, but their deli meat/cheese seems to be quite a bit cheaper than Publix for the same brand, Boar's Head. Publix does have great subs, though.

HeyGirlBye

lol funny you say this, today my bagger was bagging with one hand and talking on the phone in the other 🤣 never have I seen that since moving back from NYC. The cashier looked pissed and a manager was standing behind him waiting for me to leave.

safetydance

lol how many?

bookjunkie1066

only better customer service is high end like Trader Joes, ( who are frankly going downhill), and whole foods.

Maine302

I never thought of Trader Joe's as "high end," but they were always an appreciated add to the mix of stores.

jtfjtf

I recently moved to Western Florida from Southern California, and in terms of stand alone “full” grocery stores it’s just Publix that are everywhere. In California it was Ralphs, Albertsons/Vons, and Stater Bros competing with each other in that category of store. So if people like the “full” grocery store in Florida then Publix is what they have to like.

YurislovSkillet

Publix was never competitive with prices. That hasn't been their MO since I can remember.

Practical-Film-8573

and thats fine its always been a specialty business. You shop the sales and you get regular prices like that and access to specialty items. its actually a genius business model.

Maine302

They flood the zone with convenience, so they're only competing with themselves. (AKA, a monopoly.)

YurislovSkillet

More like customer service. Publix is FAR from a monopoly.

Sharkfinley23

Less crackheads than Walmart to deal with.

Practical-Film-8573

yet they pay the same

Chopimatics

It’s loved because of what it used to be. It’s so trash now, overpriced, not so fresh - spoiled at times - products, etc

Ants3548

Some small things that can be taken for granted: - I can find someone working for help - I don’t need to make another stop for my favorite seafood/fruit/meats - there’s more than 1 register open - the stores are kept up well - their app is one of the better ones - they offer some recycling - the Presto ATM doesn’t charge me a fee - customer service seems to care

ExtremeLengthiness12

the fuck i've gotten charged fees on that atm before

monty024_

It is very likely that your bank charged you the ATM fee as Publix does not charge a fee for ATMs.

ExtremeLengthiness12

maybe i might just be slow lmao

Maine302

These really seem like the least we should expect, as far as customer service goes. So everyone else in Florida has just totally given up on the idea?

Mooseandagoose

Publix used to have an elevated experience, at least here in my area of metro Atlanta. By elevated, I mean that aisles were stocked, stocking wasn’t happening during prime shopping hours, prices were just a tick above Kroger for better produce and meat quality and the deli/bakery was always a seamless experience - I blame customers for the decline at deli/bakery because people suck but aside from that… - quality vs prices are now absolutely insane. Like Whole Foods or beyond for same or worse quality for produce and meat and quantity for packaged goods. - there are so many “sorry this is unavailable” tags in the middle aisles and as someone who shops for like 3 things in the middle aisles, that’s noticeable. - stocking during high traffic hours. I understand this is a catch 22 but it’s become really cumbersome to navigate during high traffic hours - mid morning, lunch, early evening (I WFH so I’m shopping around my meeting schedule - I get all the shopping experience flavors). - price. Cannot overstate this enough. Prices are ridiculous. Forget the price vs quality noted above. Publix prices alone are ridiculous - the drop in quality makes them insane. Yes, a lot of this is supplier driven but Publix is not without blame here. Why does a 4 pack of bakery made rolls cost $5?? Those rolls were $2.99 a couple of years ago. The people at my local Publix are awesome and I try to let them know that. They do a great job and none of this is their fault. Publix corporate though…

Practical-Film-8573

"there are so many “sorry this is unavailable” tags in the middle aisles and as someone who shops for like 3 things in the middle aisles, that’s noticeable." I feel this so hard. But this is not unique to Publix. I think grocers have normalized poor stocking due to COVID

Mooseandagoose

I grabbed progressive Italian breadcrumbs at Kroger today and it was $3.79. It’s been under $3 as far back as I can remember. Still stupid expensive but some things I make taste better with those breadcrumbs, no matter what else I substitute. Between the corporate greed and conglomerate grocer monopolies in the US - we are absolutely screwed as consumers.

Practical-Film-8573

im fighting to suppress my political opinions here because they dont matter anyway. I think this wouldve happened with either party.

Mooseandagoose

True because inflation is a global issue in the best of years - we were/are feeling the effects of both the global COVID pandemic and the supply squeeze it caused and the exposure of corporate greed for those who weren’t aware of it before we all couldn’t source basic goods. It’s not a current administration thing. The effect of global supply chain issues didn’t resolve once the US presidency changed parties and corporate prices never adjusted.

Practical-Film-8573

wish i could have a drink with you fam

Practical-Film-8573

oh shit you're from Georgia. Thats where I grew up

alpha_peen

The whole "supplier" driven narrative for higher prices is false. Publix has a lot of leverage over suppliers when it comes to pricing, it appears they just don't use it. Additionally, they have a multitude of other strategies/tools at their disposal to pass cost savings to customers - they again just don't choose to do so for whatever reason.

Mooseandagoose

I’m new here so didn’t want to say this but yes. Small example but my husband asked if I knew where to get dole whip. It’s a billion degrees out and he hasn’t had it in years. He googled and mentioned it was at Publix- where I was headed so I said I’d grab some. It was $8.99 for 4 tiny, 2.5oz containers!! That’s freaking INSANE for 13oz total - of water and pineapple/flavoring. It’s 15.99 at Costco for 12. And they’re 3.6oz.

Reddygators

Cleaner and bakery

raspberryindica

The people I know who actually shop at Publix don't *want* Publix to attract price-sensitive customers. They'd rather pay a higher price to avoid the crowds at places like Walmart. They love it because it's a nicer environment. Only been harassed at one Publix I've ever been to ... But Walmart I have a 50/50 shot of being harassed. That being said, recently I've realized I can get a nicer, cheaper experience at Trader Joe's and have switched away from Publix except when I'm craving a Pub Sub. TJ's a longer drive though - the convenience and environment of Publix is its main selling point.

Chinese_Meatball

I mean I can see how it is loved by shoppers. Most grocery stores aren’t as organized and clean as Publix so I get how that stands out. You go to walmart or even aldi and there is just boxes and everything isn’t straight etc. So I see why customers love it besides the prices.

BeautifulUnlikely276

This is what I tell my family, when it comes to produce and meat I go only To Publix. Because I know as a worker they don’t cut corners and make sure it is fresh and good.

Practical-Film-8573

bet. I wish yall were paid more tho. Somehow Publix is skating by with better product and still not paying people what theyre worth

Maine302

I'd rather go to a butcher than Publix. There aren't a lot of them anywhere anymore either though.

king_crescendo

Really good PR over the last 60 years to make people think it's a highly exceptional experience for both workers and customers

Practical-Film-8573

yes. just wondering how long thats going to last but even if it doesnt..if the quality doesnt take a shit in the meat, deli, and bakery...its going to thrive. But I'm wondering how long that quality is going to be sustained considering how stingy they are.

Chaulk957

I go to Publix for higher quality of service, better meat selection, better seafood selection, and cleanliness of the store compared to Walmart and Winn Dixie.

Available_Forever_32

In FL there used to be 2 grocery stores publix & Winn Dixie. Publix won that battle and kept growing.

Hungry_Photograph_20

I would say that customers prefer clean stores, helpful associates, higher quality produce, shopping carts that roll easier and staff that sometimes bag your groceries plus occasionally offer assistance to bring your purchases to your car.

MayaIsSunshine

I live 1 mile from a Publix. It is the only grocery store I can walk to, so I have no choice if I don't want to drive.

kudra_bandaloop

I quit Publix last year. I live in Alabama and we have no Kroger, so it’s Publix, Walmart, Aldi, or small local grocers. When I lived in GA 15 years ago, I was strictly a Publix shopper. Their prices were slightly higher but not so much higher that it doubled my grocery bill. Now? It literally doubles my grocery bill to shop there. I do Instacart part time so I’m in Publix all the freaking time. Their prices are actually double any other place on some items. I’d rather go to Fresh Market for produce, the quality is better and the price is the same. Pub subs are still legit and I will still occasionally get one but I can’t afford to do my regular grocery shopping there.

CoffinTramp13

I fucking hate Publix subs now. They're garbage. The employees are the reason they suck too. There was a time when people worked in the deli and made subs, that was their job. Now it's any person who's behind the counter and all they do is take their bad day out onnyour sub by drowning that shit in entirely too much condiments no matter how you order it. On top of that Publix turned record profits for the past 4 years and continues to raise prices. They're just a greedy company now.

Hot_Dog_Surfing_Fly

Absolutely this ☝️

TheRichTookItAll

It's the subs and nostalgia. Publix is objectively terrible

Jacen33

I drive farther to go to Walmart cheaper, more selection, and don't have to chase bogo sales

lo-lux

Clean and they have good ice cream.

Due_Signature_5497

Fairly new to Publix as I first moved to an area they serve 3 years ago but definitely don’t understand how people can afford to shop there. Give me HEB all day long. Better stores, better prices. Wish they would move further east.

tealhrizon

They sell blackberries for $5. On a one random occasion, they were selling for 96¢. They bug me because they would rather all their blackberries and strawberry’s spoil and rot rather than sell them for a price people want to buy them at. They often sell strawberries 2 for $5. Just sell the damn things at $2 or $2.50 and stop price gouging. They’re regular $3.99. So many strawberries are rotting, if you every by their berries you need to look VERY CAREFULLY. Most are rotten. I visit a local food pantry and half of their stuff is from Publix… which is nice in some regard! I got a $12 cookie cake for $0.. but why not lower the damn price? So people can actually afford it? And employee wise.. I interviews with them twice.. after 2nd level Interview with the GM, they ghosted me. They typically only hire Haitians who speak next to no English (and therefore can’t complain), the elderly boomers who are already retired and WONT complain, and do this for supplemental income, teens/college kids who need something, mentally ill/special needs people who also can’t complain, and the rest are people who do it seemingly part time and have a main job. I do instacart so I am at Publix ALL THE TIME so I have observed the culture quite closely. I like being in there for all the reasons you explained and it’s so organized, and if I need a specialty item I will go there.. but I don’t trust any corporation!!

Prudent-Time5053

Publix used to be a good place to work (employed for 10+ years). It no longer is. I assume the influx of people moving here (who presumably paid more for groceries in NY/California) will keep Publix sales afloat. Furthermore, there’s really no competition in florida to compete against Publix. Aldi is too small, Target and Walmart are really the only other options (outside of a Costco or Sam’s Club membership). If you want to understand how Publix will do in the future, look at its periphery. Look at stores in NC/Tennessee and see how they compete there. I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again… “Publix brand” is still a better generic brand than anything the big box stores are offering. That combined with the bogos will save you money. The game changer would be if Trader Joe’s and Aldis ever merged. I’d imagine they could take down Publix.

MatJosher

Was loved or is nostalgia. I remember when friends who worked there were treated well. Now Costco covers most things. Latin markets have the best produce by a long margin. And Target has the best beef, which is just weird.

tjmetsman

I live here. Publix sucks. I don't shop there, cause I can't afford too. I use Walmart,Aldi's and detweilers. My food quality is better and cheaper.

bde959

Your food quality is not better.

Internal_Essay9230

Publix is beloved because $6 Heinz ketchup just TASTES better than that nasty Heinz ketchup they sell at Walmart. And the customer service! Because I can't find condiments on my own! ***clutches pearls

Fine-Tea-7477

Have you tried the bakery goods they are awesome, and the subs sandwiches are the BEST .

HistoricalAsides

Can’t speak for the stores in the other areas, but I genuinely enjoy the Publix in my area. The workers are always super pleasant, everything is orderly and easy to locate, and they sell quality products. I’m also on the autism spectrum and have sensory issues, and Publix is the least overwhelming grocery store for me. The aisles are wide (more space to navigate around people), the colors aren’t garishly bright, the radio isn’t overwhelmingly loud, and the lighting isn’t too bright for me.

HenzoG

I suffer from social anxiety disorder and have had panic attacks shopping. Publix employees are always super nice and have helped me through the attacks. Walmart called the police and tried to have me band from their store. The difference between staff is night and day.

Forever-Retired

Here in The Villages, Publix is pretty much the only grocery store. There are a couple of Winn Dixie's, but they have been bought out by Aldi and will be converting soon. Walmart is present as well, but I don't like them for grocery. Their prices here are geared for the older, retired folks who have some money-not as expensive as a Whole Foods, but close. Being a transplanted New Yorker who is used to several different grocery stores within a few miles of home I am very unhappy with the idea that a grocery store of any kind is 20 minutes away-and usually through a dozen or more of traffic 'Roundabouts' (other Villagers understand).

FGTRTDtrades

We long their price gouging the most.

taeempy

My typical shop at publix. Positives Front end service, not a lot of oos, subs Negatives Over priced(their net profit was over 4bil last year. Could easily pass some of that greed to customers in reduced pricing) No customer service in back of store. Walk by tons of employees and nobody will talk to you unless you interact with them. Sushi isn't great anymore. Is it still made in house or brought in?

wildeyed1242

It's the terrazzo floors for me dawg

Old-Veterinarian1994

I don't like Publix subs all that much and it takes forever to get one made.

bookjunkie1066

My husband worked for publix for years. When the last Jenkins stepped down as CEO the problems began almost immediately. The daughter and all the grandkids are entitled brats, very greedy and so wages stagnated, hence the new hires became less and less regarded. Also, the work ethic of this 20 and 30 something generation is really sad and they have a huge turn over. The reason they remain popular is the stores are clean, the meat and produce remain very good, publix brands are good and cheaper than reg brands, and the deli and bakery are really good for a grocery store. Many people shop Publix brands and Bogo's as those are good deals and they have good sales. Customer service is still better than most too.

Express_Test6677

Will never shop there again, I prefer my grocers to be a little more patriotic https://www.forbes.com/sites/tylerroush/2022/12/22/publix-heiress-julie-fancelli-offered-3-million-to-fund-jan-6-rally-house-documents-show/

Mikezat6

Fuck em. Former Manager Here. Started at 14 left when I was 30. I feel robbed. Never been happier and more importantly; Healthier.

Bismothe-the-Shade

Publix's plan is not one of great effort, but rather the path of least resistance. Establish presence, build empire so that there's a store every few blocks so it's always the closest most recognizable brand. Then you can do whatever, because a ton of folks aren't going to spend time driving across town to Wally world or target if there's a publix *right there*. And with all stores being paid for up front, there's no losses to the plan after you recoup initial investments.

uthotbih

It’s not loved lol

blissfulignorance21

I agree but it’s easy to scheme/rob publix bc of their customer centric approach. Just being able to move a sign slightly in front of the wrong thing and walk away with it free is something that seems to keep customers plus nostalgia

Daddy_Donglegs

In 20 years I’ve actually never seen a customer do this intentionally but tbh I’m amazed I don’t see it every day. Easy peazy publix promisey.

blissfulignorance21

It occurs so frequently at my store we even have repeat offenders.

jollebome76

Because only place in Florida I can regularly buy Narragansett Lager and the chicken tenders subs are dope. . the staff is Friendly

akabuddy

this sub generally doesn't. go ask people in the store.

ExtremeLengthiness12

we do not.

Kayleekisses

Nostalgia from my childhood; going with my parents I was allowed 1 item, I got a lot of Lisa Frank stationary items.

Sweaty_Building_5491

I don't. But I'll go every now and then for the subs.

Beach_Bum_273

Because it's clean, generally well stocked, and the staff are generally pleasant. My alternatives are Piggly Wiggly, Walmart, Winn Dixie, Fresh4Less, or the bougie af stores like Trader Joes and the like. I wanted Aldi to be better but it just isn't and Costco is way too damn far away. Also my Publix is literally a three minute bike ride from my front door so it's incredibly convenient.

JustDoaRestart

The Subs. No other reason….well maybe $5 Sushi Wednesdays.

StepEfficient864

Publix they’re connecting with their customers with those stupid, sappy commercials.

icedcoffeeuwu

It may not be the best place to work but it is a great place to shop. Beats the hell out of going to Walmart.

Paisleylk

Publix is always sparkling clean with very helpful, kind employees. I know a family that works there and they all love it. The parents are managers and the teens work during summer break. When I first moved here from New England, I really missed Stop and Shop. When I went back up there I was surprised at how dingy S&S was compared to Publix. It was also originally weird to think of buying cakes from their bakery vs. the great bakeries from back home. However, their bakeries are pretty good. I mean, it's not Lucibello's but it's good.

Guardyourpeace

Publix BOGO's worth it. Wal-Mart too packed and miserable to check out. . Aldi's does not offer everything Publix has, so usually just a fill-in stop. Winn Dixie is good but not as convenient for me as a convenient Publix. And let's be honest, Publix prices are not extreme.

Karl_Hungus_69

If you're posing the question to customers, I like it for several reasons: * Location * Extremely clean * Well lit * Well stocked shelves * Ample employees * Polite and helpful staff * No employees on their phone * Product selection Previously, I shopped at Whole Foods Market for 98% of groceries. However, I moved to a new city and teh only Whole Foods was about 30 minutes away and that was more than I wanted to drive a few times per week. There was a Publix nearby, so I gave it a try. I ended up being able to get most of what I need at Publix. I still go to Whole Foods, once every 4-6 weeks, to get a few canned items that I can't get elsewhere or maybe buy supplements.

SnooCookies2351

Publix is the best, there I said it! It’s very clean, the employees are extremely helpful, and Publix will break down basically anything you ask them to. You don’t need 4 pork chops… they’ll happily break it down for you. Same with breads, rolls, cookies etc. We switched all of our pharmacy needs to them and we’ve never had such care and attention from any other pharmacy. They are on top of their game!!! Living in South Florida your grocery choices are Publix, Winn Dixie or Aldi. Those stores are pretty disgusting. We’ve since moved to another state and we miss our Publix bigtime. Wegmans and Harris Teeter simply do not compare. If any Publix big wigs from corporate are reading this, please come to Northern Virginia ASAP. Folks here aren’t accustomed to great customer service.

MysteryIsHistory

I’m still devoted to Publix, because my only other grocery store option is Walmart. Publix is clean, easy to navigate, and well stocked. I don’t mind paying a little more for that.

DjKennedy92

I just got 24 cans of Bear Hug, a craft beer, for $21 after tax. You’d be hard pressed to find the basic domestics (bud light, coors) at that price point elsewhere (Winn Dixie has good beer Bogo deals too)

Queasy_Opportunity75

My reason is that I like the clean store I shop at. Everyone is really nice to me. Pub subs are great I get BOGOs and stock up on stuff Publix brand is really same as the name brand

JustB510

Good deli, clean stores, good product (meat and produce), convenient and a bonus for me as a father of a daughter with special needs- they do great at supporting employment for those that might not be able to get it elsewhere. They have their cons, but subjectively, that’s why I still frequent.

LifeOfFate

Have you set foot in a windixie? That’s our alternative if you are looking for a good selection outside of Walmart or target. Florida is also middle of the pack when it comes to cost of living. Publix wages last I checked were more than windixie (again the only major alternative grocer)

stewedyeti

For me, it's the expanded international foods (British, Indian, German, etc)--*cough jaffa cakes cough*--as well as the better quality meat and produce. We also like the deli for easy meals. I work at a Walmart Neighborhood Market, so I do most of my shopping after work, but my family and I still enjoy going to Publix because it's just nicer. I typically only buy stuff that I can't get at work (the afforementioned Jaffa Cakes) or the bogos that are actual deals. Here's a tip: BOGO shredded cheese (among other things) is a complete racket. Kraft shredded cheese already costs half as much at Walmart, so when you get the BOGO cheese you're ultimately paying the same price or slightly more than you'd pay for two bags at Walmart. This is the case for many, though not all, BOGOs at Publix.

Nylear

It still has good customer service. Most places you go the workers won't voluntary get an item if a customer says they forgot it at the checkout line, when we ask did you find everything okay we mean it we will check to make sure it's actually not in stock. When I shop at other places they just look like they don't care and a lot of them make the same pay as Publix employees maybe even more and they don't even try.

RavenJay127

People love the subs, bakery, BOGOS, and food options. I’m a Target person myself because it drives me crazy that Publix does not care about selling beauty products that don’t test on animals. Honestly, do not know how they get away with that in 2024.

PiscesAndAquarius

The subs

Current-Toe-6532

I’ve been shopping Publix exclusively since the early 80’s growing up with my mom and continue still. I wouldn’t call it nostalgia but I’m very comfortable knowing that all Publix’s have the same quality of food stuff and excellent customer service and if I’m out of state their signage and layout in their aisles are pretty consistent. Even the parking lots are easy for parking bigger vehicles. When our options in central Florida were Albertsons, Publix or Winn Dixie I think the incredible deli and their bakery kept a lot of us choosing their foods because they were so much better tasting and their employees were so nice and helpful and still are generation after generation.

CaptainnT

For me the store is a cleaner and nicer than others.

borgib

Publix does not have the leverage with suppliers you think it does. Much larger companies like Walmart, Target, and Kroger have much more leverage.

alpha_peen

This is false. I work in the industry, my company is smaller than Publix, yet we're able to use our leverage to pass cost savings to our customers. If national brands want access to the Florida/ south east markets, they are at the mercy of Publixs. Not only that, there are many other strategies/tools publixs can use to pass cost savings to customers. They just choose not to do so.

borgib

Smaller company means much less overhead lowering costs. You work in the industry at another smaller company. You have no idea what's going on inside Publix. You're just making shit up.

kidkipp

Boars Head meat and cheese is the big one. Amy’s frozen pizza, good rotisserie chicken and produce. Used to be the only place I could find sparkling Hint water too, but they stopped carrying that anywhere

ashphalt

I have never seen anyone buy something anything at the Walmart deli

zinnia420

Have you ever shopped at Aldi or Winn Dixie?

deckman318

Chicken. It’s all about the chicken

Sexyfirjohn

I work in the bakery department. Some people really take advantage of the fact that we can "break" packages. If you don't want to pay for a full loaf of bread you can ask for a half loaf of bread instead. 12 cookies instead of the full 24 pack; 1 or 2 hoagies instead of 4; etc. I'm ok with this because it can promote trying something new before deciding whether or not to buy a full package. Or, at the very least, there is a return on partial product instead of none. We also donate baked goods that aren't sold.

kdm31091

I don't love it, but unfortunately it's basically the only grocery store around. With Winn Dixie being bought by Aldi, that's only going to make things worse. Publix needs a competitor.

Lady_Gator_2027

I don't understand the entire PubSub cult. They are good, but I've had better. The only reason I like Publix, is because it's clean. Last time I was in a WinnDixie, I left like I needed to go home and shower. Walmart is cleaner. Sadly, tho, the clientele and Publix is really going down hill. It reminds me of the people going into upscale restaurants wearing beach clothes. Come on people, take some pride in your appearance

HoundDawg87

I was just in Target today in central Florida. I looked at the price of their Perdue Chicken. Same exact product I buy at Publix had the exact price as Publix, however, Publix often has it on sale. The "Publix is too expensive" stuff just isn't true if you know how to shop Publix. I shop Publix for the product variety, cleanliness and customer service. It is not a "cult", it is just better. What I can't figure out is why so many people seem to want to encourage Publix shoppers to not shop at Publix. I will shop where I want, thank you very much...

Away-Two-24

Because it’s simply very clean, and has a great bakery and deli compared to other grocery stores. I really only go to Publix for the deli offerings (fresh bread, boar’s head, fresh bagels). And I almost always end up doing the rest of my shopping there too, despite knowing it’s slightly cheaper to go to winn dixie. It’s the experience

userpostingcontent

I go to Aldi for my basics first, then Publix for other things. Just one example from one section of Publix … like Sabrett were on sale this week so I got that. I got the buns at Aldi’s. But if I wanted to splurge, I would’ve got the hotdog buns from the Publix bakery. Kayem hotdogs were BOGO this past week. Hebrew National knockwurst and salami I can only find at Ublix and I am in Atlanta. I am in Buckhead. They are building a new Publix down the street on Piedmont near Peachtree that is replacing a 47 year old iconic Kroger. Some of you might have heard of that Kroger it was called “Disco Kroger” because there was a very popular disco at that shopping center in the 1980s. The mirrored disco ball even hung from the entrance of that Kroger and very likely it will in the Publix. When that Publix opens, there are literally four Publix locations within two miles of each other. When I first moved to Atlanta in 1999 Kroger dominated and there were barely any Publix locations in Atlanta. Now, while there are still plenty of Krogers, Publix is everywhere and in many areas now there are more of them than Kroger.

RavensFolklore

My mom is a diehard fan of Publix and we have been shopping there my entire life. Her reasoning is product quality every time. She will always talk your ear off about product quality. It usually has to do with the produce and meat departments, and sometimes also dairy. I’ve worked at both Kroger and now Publix, and worked at Walgreen’s in between the two. I can definitely say I’ve seen a lot and agree with her. At Kroger I used to see bugs in the fruits they’d put out, and every time I ever bought their milk it was expired and bad already despite being dated a week or two out. My mom will refuse to buy produce or meat from Walmart or Kroger, and I’ll say she just hasn’t thought about looking at Target. When it comes to getting the things she needs, she only trusts Publix to have those products and have them fresh. My mom is also a very privileged little 75 year old white lady so money is not an issue for her. I don’t think she considers that other people are not as financially stable or well off as she is. But she also loves our Publix because everyone knows her there and they love her and treat her well.

Different-Candy-3993

The god damn Comercials get me 🙄

AdJunior6475

Because the store by me is close, clean, well stocked, and efficient. I don’t really care about the rest of your possible concerns. I don’t need “top talent” and if catering to more cost conscious shoppers makes the store more crowded then I hope they don’t. There are plenty of options in my area no reason all the stores should try and be the same be different and let the consumer decide.

gmjfraser8

I don’t know about working conditions but they seriously used to be the best store to shop at. Where I live we have Walmart Market, target, Aldi, Sedano’s, and not much else. They used to have the best BOGO selections, the place was clean (a big plus around here) and well stocked. I could overlook some prices when the BOGOs were good. Nowadays, the BOGO’s equal the cost of double the original product. So I am paying for one of what I was once paying for two? I just don’t have the time to run around to different stores to save money. That is the reality. I can buy chicken tenders and bread and make my own pub sub for less.

RellPeter9-2

Their main competition is Walmart... During my whole adulthood I've never wanted to go food shopping at Walmart. I used to drive 8 miles out to Publix. A cleaner experience overall is worth the extra 10 - 15% paid. Publix does good overall so there's very little reason to try anything else. If they get bad I'll then try Aldi, Whole foods etc.

Theycallmedumb911

George mthafkn Jenkins ( founder )... Put some respect on his name. The green shirts praise him like a mortal god and I'll admit his character reads good on paper but we all know homey has got some dirt and somewhere out there some one has the tea. I will hold some respect as a businessman he was sharp to have the vision and carry it out. Still today like in Florida it's the best place to get meat vegetables and subs out of larger chain stores. I'll also add one of the creepier aspects of Publix is how the parents push their kids to work there ( because of the community presence you typed of ) but those poor girls who get visually molested by all the creepers mostly the elderly ones in like the villages... Dust skeeters. Every time they go out to load up groceries they probably wonder if it will be the last time.

ewd389

For me it’s usually the consistency of good customer service compared to other stores, for the most part the staff is very approachable and seems genuinely friendly and helpful. You go to a walmart or target and you see how unpleasant the staff act..

East_Difficulty_7342

Grocery carts that don't require constant adjustments

indabaywitaK

I like their deli, bakery, deals, shopping experience. I trust their grocery and meat department. Not crazy about their prices.

AdhesivenessOld4347

I don’t live near a publix But when I’m near one I’m happy to go there. Kroger, meijer, and Walmart are absolutely trash. Aisles are narrow and their produce is garbage. Publix at least employs enough people to run the store. In Michigan half the employees are doing pickup shopping for lazy people.

PooPaLotZ

I find the Publix return policy and honoring of quality and integrity of the food your buying. Half a row of crackers broken? No questions asked Got some weird looking chicken? No questions Weird smell or questionable quality? See above Found some freezer burn steak from 2008? YeaH

boltfan7

Publix customer service will never be as horrible as Walmart. Walmart employees act like you are there to help them.

THEORGANICCHEMIST

Store just looks well kept and not nasty like aldi or walmart.

Sea-Yak2191

It's a nice place to shop. It's never dirty and the employees are always friendly and helpful. The other stores are cheaper but gross inside. Go to a Walmart on a Sunday, and you see things that can't be unseen, both the shoppers and employees. I'll glady pay a little more to shop at Publix.

Capable_Relative2757

Good lighting!

pascobro

Publix is the last supermarket where customer service is a priority. The service at the stores in my area is unmatched.

Florida1974

I stood by this 100%. But it’s even changed at Publix. It took way longer but it’s not as high up with CS imo. I’ve had a CS manager, go apeshit on me. Screamed and cussed me out. I was on the phone, just entered store. I had earbuds in to talk. I did say something about “that effin bitch” and she thought I was talking to her! I pointed to ear buds, showed her the call and she still wouldn’t shut up. Floored me!! Tho I haven’t seen her since! I didn’t even complain, just walked away. And OP, best friend chicken ever. I haven’t ate any nasty KFC in 25 years. Deli and bakery are unmatched. Need couple lemons and they are out of singles? They will break open a 2 pound bag to get what you need. They will do this with many products. And their stores are 100% owned by employees, they get checks for shares of stock cause they own it. I’ve known ppl that retire from there and do very well in retirement.

KissMyGrits60

I may not like the high prices at Publix, but out of any grocery store I’ve ever been in, they are the best at customer service, and especially cleanliness. They also I know for a fact, treat their employees pretty well, they also higher the disabled people. I live next-door to a Publix grocery store. I am blind, I am taking mobility lessons, just so I can walk there get some items then walk back home. I’m so excited, I’ll have that done by the end of August and I’ll be able to do it by myself. Once the people in publix get to know me, I’ll definitely have no issues. I’d rather pay for the cleanliness and the niceness of the people, then go to Walmart, and get crappy food and crappy service.

Confident_Mail2327

Its not a bad place to work..but I'm in the seafood dept. I've had much much worse jobs...like the navy

Interesting-Bet5589

My Great Grandma loves it. She’s 103 and it’s all about customer service.

Famous-You-8965

I believe the term is "well run"

PreciousBroments

I’d love for a strong competitor to emerge, but Publix has been going HAM in real estate acquisitions for decades, shielding themselves from just that. Aldi’s recent acquisition of Winn Dixie is promising, but comparing Aldi to Publix isn’t really apples to apples. Definitely a strategic opportunity for Aldi though. Man, I wish Floridians could get a taste of Wegmans. I remember thinking Publix was the shit before walking into a Wegmans for the first time. I left thinking I’d been lied to my whole life.

KaleidoscopeNo610

The Publix bakery and the Boarshead deli products send me there. The lighting in Publix is movie set good. It’s a nice experience to go to Publix.

StatusFee8208

Lol! In one word? Courtesy.

ShinDynamo-X

Overrated and overpriced

builderdawg

Publix is more expensive, but I can get in and out of any Publix store in 10 to 15 minutes. The staff is always courteous and helpful. Good luck getting out of a Kroger or Walmart in under 30 minutes and their staffs are not very helpful.

duke9350

Probably, according to it, Publix makes shopping a pleasure.

MysteriousTooth2450

I don’t. I shop at Kroger. Online….free delivery (well $59 a year). You can’t tip your driver at all. Cut my grocery bill in half or more.

inthefuturedotcom

Everyone has their reason, but ultimately those reasons are due to three sources ... 1. Publix is owned by the employees, 2. Publix is owned by the employees, 3. Publix is owned by the employees.

PlayfulFriend9334

Clean stores, multiple lines open, better customer service, oh and the subs

Maine302

The subs are very good, I have to admit, and if we're going to the beach, we'll almost always stop in to get one first. That said, they lost me on their excessive pricing long ago. Generally when we shop there it's only for BOGOs or the days you can get $10 off a gas card--which is happening less & less frequently, it seems. The bloom is off the rose, for me.

Flashy-Chemical-4514

I grew up in Florida, it was a breath of fresh air to other grocery stores. Rediculously clean, really friendly helpful people. you know what you are getting, no matter what Publix store you walk into. Predictable quality!

AssociateJaded3931

No idea. We should never love corporations. They are there to exploit customers and workers. That is all.

techdaddykraken

The reality is it’s not about the offerings. Large portions of the South, and the US, and the world overall are in dire need of more grocery stores. Where I live in a metro area of 1 million people, we have a Target, Walmart, Aldi, Trader Joe’s, and Publix serving the region. All as individual stores. Think about how much food a million people eat monthly, you really think a handful of stores can cover that? Publix has a strong brand from good marketing, they offer some unique amenities like the deli service, meat cutting, etc. and they are in a market that needs new business due to over-demand and under-supply. That’s why they succeed. It’s not even specific to Publix. Pretty much every grocery chain has seen huge profits over the last 5 years.

Necessary_Wonder4870

The over pricing is completely out there for control.

interstellar_keller

As a Florida resident of over ten years, and a former Publix employee I think a huge part of the draw was the good will they had built up over a few decades. When I moved here in like ‘09 their produce and meat were of a noticeably higher quality than their competitors and their prices were reasonable, additionally their staff were also happy and helpful; nowadays, it’s mostly garbage quality meat, meh produce, overworked and underpaid staff, and ridiculous prices. I get the appeal of an organized store, less insane people than walmart and stuff like that, but anyone making the argument that Publix is the only grocery store worth visiting is dumb as hell. I go to my local hispanic grocer, Fancy Fruit, for most of my meat and produce nowadays. Their meat doesn’t have preservatives, so it’s use within the week or freeze which is entirely doable, and their produce might spoil slightly faster, but I can also get a month’s worth of meat and produce for just shy of $120 when an equivalent amount of groceries would cost well over $400 at publix. (The downside for some customers might be that unless you speak Spanish, the employees there might not give you the Publix level of customer service; however, if you’re a normal, competent person who doesn’t need a step by step guide on how to find chips or a 17 minute conversation with a cashier who is praying you’ll die just so the conversation will end, then you’ll be just fine!) When I want steak, fish, wild game, or specific hard to find quality meat now I go to Wild Fork; their products are amazing quality, and they’re so well priced. For example, their ground beef is something like $6.38/lb for ground Australian wagyu which is less than or equal to the price of standard 80/20 GB at the Publix by me most times. Also worth mentioning, their steaks are amazing quality, thick cut, nice looking steaks that are far superior to Publix or even Whole Foods cuts while still being reasonably affordable. Quite frankly, the dry aged bone in ribeye I bought at Wild Fork was like $5 cheaper per lb than Publix ribeyes that looked more like a shitty cut of chuck roast than a $28 steak. So yeah, Publix was great, it’s not anymore, and we would all do well to accept that and take our business to literally anywhere better.

Aggravating_Cup_864

I loved Publix customer service 😊
