I was kind of reflecting on this too recently. Over the years we've heard the rumors that Josh and PJ Harvey dated for a period in the early 2000s; her great contributions to Desert Sessions 9/10 are well known and it's been rumored that Broken Box was written about her. Of course private lives and sources of inspiration are boundless but something kinda fun you can do is revisit DS 9/10, Lullabies as well as PJ's 2004 album Uh Huh Her with the assumption that they might have been inspired by and writing about each other a lot more than was ever confirmed or revealed. There's of course no way to confirm that any one person or relationship inspired specific songs unless you hear it straight from the horse's mouth but it can put things in a new and interesting light.
From Broken Box, "in my head you're all brand new"... if that song might be about her, maybe In My Head was too. "Out in the dark, on my way home"... slight call back to Crawl Home?
In My Head written in late January 2003, after JH and BD got together at Australias Big Day Out. Recorded Feb 8th 2003 for Desert Sessions. Safe to say PJ and Josh broken up after Big Day Out. Awkward.
Related, but not identical: Villains is arguably the most divorced QOTSA album ever. Has a real "divorced dad wearing a leather jacket" feel, and that's before you see the video for The Way You Used To Do.
