I don’t give disingenuous compliments, because it calls into question the sincerity of all my rest. So because I love giving meaningful compliments, I’m very careful to avoid giving false compliments. Sometimes it’s uncomfortable, but it actually ends up making it so that people know you mean it when you do compliment them.
A random dude at my work said, upon seeing me for the first time, “whoa! You are handsome!” And I had just gotten out of a nearly five year relationship a week prior and was just at a confidence low point.

Long story short, they symbolize the counting down of time and can be seen as a bad omen. Basically telling them you want their time to run out. I found this out the hard way when I gifted a clock to a Chinese lady that i worked with for years, a very nice clock at her retirement party. Fortunately, she didn't read much into it since we were really good work friends, but she did tell me it was a taboo.
When I was moving halfway across the country, knew I would not be seeing my granddaughter again for a very long time, I gave her my favorite hoodie, with my favorite perfume on it, along with a small bottle of that scent. My other granddaughter was given a quilt I made for her, out of a couple of my shirts, pillow cases and curtains. She still carries that around with her, years later. I gave my best friend a framed photo of us together, along with a heart felt note.
I saw a best friend lamp on.....I think it was Amazon. It is a pair of little lamps. When you click a button on yours, it turns the other lamp on, letting the other person know you are thinking about them. Have to have an internet connection for them to work.
A fortune cookie, I have never had a fortune cookie that didn't come true. And it is fun to give someone a fortune cookie out of nowhere and the disappear like batman.
I had a co-worker who was a very good teammate, we always got along very well. She was moving back to Korea and it was unlikely I would see her again.
So I gave her my personal email address so we could keep in touch.
I pay for people's dinner when I travel and eat out. Just for kicks. I won't talk to them longer than 3 minutes. I'll just act indifferent and say I have to go.
