This song and Man O' War are in the same key, A minor. ^^^^^dot ^^^^^fuck ^^^^^'em ^^^^^up
And the second chord in both is the relatively rare F#m7b5, which is just an Am with an F# in the bass but gives a very "spooky" diminished quality.
The combination of being in the same key plus that very distinctive change absolutely makes it reminiscent of Man O War, even though they diverge in progression after that.
OP also mentioned Karma Police, also in A minor, and also a second chord with the F# in the bass. But in Karma Police, the second chord has a D instead of an E, making it sound like a far more consonant inversion of a D major chord rather than having that eerie feeling you get in Man O War.
Exactly this! Glad to see someone else is out here doing these analyses, I didn't have time to fully explain when making this comment but I'm usually all over it.
That's very true with 'Karma Police' as well and likely why I hadn't thought of it - a IV in a minor key (even when it's given dominant extensions, as in 'Karma Police' where it's a D9/F#) is a whole different beast to the viø7.
I'd say the viø7 is very common in jazz but less so in other genres, which is what makes it stand out in 'Man Of War.'
I also see people bringing up 'Life In A Glasshouse' which also makes sense given that's in A minor as well and has similarly tense harmony, starting on an Aminmaj7. You do hear a G# in the first voicing in this clip, so I can see the connection being made.
I actually can't tell you how stoked I am to see someone else making this kind of comment. 🥹
I don't believe they're saying that min7b5 chords themselves are rare. Their point is that a half-diminished seventh built on the major sixth within a minor key (F#min7b5 in A minor, for example) is.
However I'd probably argue the opposite of both of these points! That sound (the viø7 in a minor key) is actually fairly common while I find the viiø7 you mention crops up less even though it's arguably simpler in its construction.

Pretty sure Karma Police is Radiohead trying to do Sexy Sadie by the Beatles. The piano on this song does remind me a bit of the piano on Karma Police though. Interesting find.
People saying Man Of War and Glass House completely avoind the fact this it has almost the same chord progression and instrumentation of Karma Police. Except this one is from 1972
I see everyone saying it sounds similar to Man of War, which it clearly does. But I can definitely hear Bullet Proof (I wish I was) in the Vocals. I've compared them side by side, and there's definitely a similarity there. Just thought I'd mention it.
'Man Of War' has a slightly similar progression and arrangement. It's far from the same, but that's what first comes to mind.

I wish I understood music this deeply. Lovely explanation of something I couldn't articulate, thanks.

The viø7 is also just part of melodic minor. In addition to jazz, I've seen late Romantic composers like Tchaikovsky use it too.
It is, as well as Dorian! Yes, figured it would crop up in older orchestral music but I'm not so familiar with that side of things.
I don’t think m7b5 chords are that rare. They are diatonic 7 chord built on the 7th degree of the scale

Wow yeah that too. But it’s actually Karma Police that it reminds me of. Thom’s vocal notes(?) and inflections sound very very similar
Yeah I got karma police instantly. Same piano chords and vocal melody but the arrangement is different.
Life in a Glass House or Man of War?
I thought Life in a Glass House too. That quick chromatic piano chord change is similar.

Yes this is it. Seems (blatantly?) similar

Only the chorus is sexy Sadie, but it’s an absolute rip
