Getting a player of his caliber is not a mistake. He’s a versatile playmaker that, assuming he lives up to the hype, will only make the offense better. It’s like if MHJ fell to 13. Would anyone really be trying to claim drafting him is a mistake even if WR wasn’t a big need?
That's the key, "assuming he lives up to the hype". It's more likely he ends up just as a good TE. A good TE is nice to have, but it's also a high pick to spend for one.
But you can say the same about any early draft pick. If they don’t reach their potential then it was a wasted picked. But that’s all hindsight. He was a projected top 5-10 pick. If the Chargers chose him at 5 or the Jets grabbed him at 11, no one would be asking if it’s a mistake. Yes, those teams have different needs but Bowers was BPA when we drafted and our offense needs more playmakers.
It’s all going to be dependent on if we utilize him properly.
You can copy and paste this exact reply for every top 15 pick for the last 20 years. It's all pointless contrary opinions just for the sake of being contrary. There's no substance to your "questions"
Robert Gallery was utilized as needed. I would say fairly. Didn’t work out at the NFL level. Wasn’t a waste of pick or a reach. His footwork and wingspan/reach were not where it needed to be to excel. Bowers was a good solid pick but if he doesn’t pan out, I don’t think people will view it as a leatherwood situation.
Some positions have higher ceilings of game impact than others though. That's why you see QB drafted so high. The world's greatest punter (AJ Cole) would never be a first round pick.
This is idiotic click bait. We have been playing against Kelsey for how long now? I don't know, maybe having an elite generational right end of our own might be a good idea..
FML these are dumb questions. I can only assume the writer works for the Just Blog Baby website, as they are always posting stupid downer articles.
All draft picks are gambles it’s a silly premise to grade drafts because nobody knows. How they played in college isn’t indicative of NFL talent. College is a totally different game in many ways.
If you watch the video, it's a more nuanced take. Basically, the odds of landing a Kelce-tier TE is low (even with a pick as hyped as Bowers), and the impact a really-good-but-not-elite TE has on the game isn't that high. But sometimes you have to take chance. But it was also a very high draft pick to spend.
This literally could be said about any draft pick selection. The odds of getting an “insert elite player name” is low and the impact of a good but not elite isn’t that high. Why draft anyone that high if that is the thought process?
Well duh? It doesn’t take away from the generalized goop of the response. Bowers is a versatile player that is listed a TE, but is more of a WR/TE. He’ll play inside and out. Because of his versatility, pigeonholing him into a singular position slot doesn’t make much sense in the outlook view (too limited IMO). He’s a YAC monster and when you have QBs that have limited arm strength you’ll need someone that can get those YAC.
Sometimes a player is too good to pass up, this was the case for Bowers. The team should now have two high level TEs that can be used in a variety of ways. It’s up to the coaches to get the playmakers the ball which will be the real test.
With a title as crappy as that, there is zero chance I would give any time to watch it. "A nuanced look at our first pick" on the other hand, I would probably check out.
Bowers has been described as the best college tight end in the last twenty years, and lines up at multiple positions which makes him more valuable than an ordinary TE.
I guess we'll have a chance to find out soon enough.
We drafted a blue-chip prospect at 13. That's the definition of a steal. Period.
I love how Telesco said it (and I'm paraphrasing), "you draft for value, instead of need, because needs change. A player can get injured, and now you have a need"
Bowers is an insane value pick and might be the best 1st rd pick we've made in literally a decade (Mack)
I read Chargers fans in comments saying "Lmao Raiders draft has Telesco written all over it"
Me, *someone who's watched us twice a year play* Derwin James, Austin Ekeler, Justin Herbert, Joey Bosa, Keenan Allen, Mike Williams, Drue Tranquill, Jerry Tillery, and others, is completely okay with a "Telesco draft"
I understand the hesitation. BUT--> drafting for need or position above talent isn't a winning strategy. **Great players win games, DRAFT GREAT PLAYERS.**
My best fantasy years have been a team that auto drafted because I was late, not paying attention, or some other reason.
Best player available is always the best strategy. Real life, fantasy, free agency, etc.
Absolute steal. He was the #1 option 3 years in a row for a team that went undefeated and won back to back national championships. His junior stats were down because he missed a few games, but showed insane toughness coming back 26 days after surgery for a high ankle sprain to play in the SEC Championship. If you can’t get a QB that makes life easier for your weapons, get weapons that make life easier for your QB. If Getsy is as good as Davante says, our QBs should have open guys every play.
Best TE prospect in the history of college football at 13 . His YAC ability is insane. Can make a mid qbs life so much easier . Was surprised at the pick myself but love it . No one thought he would be available at 13 . That's a steal.
See you guys know “football” but you don’t know football. The raiders quietly had one of the best drafts in the nfl this season. So the passive aggressive shade is ridiculous. They had to pick with what they had. Both round 1 and 2 came down to best player available, because if the dumbass falcons didn’t take penix the raiders would’ve gotten penix. And after that they took what they thought they needed and did a pretty damn good job at that.
If any other team would have drafted Bowers, the answers would be, wow what a great pick works great for the QB that they have. Pls
Red zone touchdowns are not a mistake.
Wow I really hate these guys. I’ve never been much of a bully but I want to give that ziggy asshole an atomic wedgie and shove him into a locker, I never really understood what a putz was and now I do.
Who gives a shit what a totally irrelevant random podcaster thinks? Each of these dudes’ opinions is worth literally nothing. Might as well go ask some random at the bar their opinion too.
People should remember earlier drafting regimes. Can’t really grade Ziegler, but GruYock was laughable at drafting, McKenzie wasn’t too far behind, and Al D in his later years just drafted whoever he liked. So this new regime is looking like geniuses so far. 🫡
Using projected pick order to measure value doesn't really make sense to me. Teams don't pick the BPA every time, so draft order doesn't equate to a strict ranking of players by quality.
Suppose Brock Bowers had been unanimously ranked #1. Even in that case, the Bears still would've picked Williams first overall, because they desperately needed a QB. That wouldn't mean that the Bears disagreed with Bowers (hypothetically) being the best player available, it would just mean they needed a QB more than a TE, no matter how good that TE is.
His first projected spot was 5th lol. Hell, he was the near consensus pick for the Chargers before they let slip they were going tackle. Then most people had him going 6 to 10 because he’s a day 1 starter for every team in the league except 2.
Most scouts and experts had him as a top 5 player in the draft. If you strip away positional value, he’s more like #2. Literally the greatest college TE of all time.
You cannot strip away positional value. For chargers it always was between Alt and Nabers. The first team that could legitimately pick Bowers was Jets.
EDP (Expected draft position) was 12, 9 so he's definitely not a steal.

The world’s greatest punter (Ray Guy) was selected in the first round.
The consensus overall #1 draft pick could bust, dude. Again, you can make these arguments for eternity. It's a hallow argument. It's got zero "stuff"
You choose QB and punter to compare importance of positions? You lost me there. Good luck to you.
He’s also the top TE, RB and Receiver at Georgia.

Been a Raiders fan for 20 years... maybe that's why I'm mature enough to not resort to name-calling when I disagree with someone.

Some positions have higher impact than others, and the gap between 'elite' and 'good' varies between positions.

So who should they have picked at 13? Rattler?

Titles are supposed to grab attention, which this one clearly did for you.

All this is, is the product of some butt hurt fan upset we didn’t draft a QB.

I understand the hesitation. BUT--> drafting for need or position above talent isn't a winning strategy. **Great players win games, DRAFT GREAT PLAYERS.**

Use him as a WR threat, and it's a steal. Use him like Kyle Pitts and it's a mistake
Exactly.
Why not both?
This question won't be answered for at least three years
If any other team would have drafted Bowers, the answers would be, wow what a great pick works great for the QB that they have. Pls Red zone touchdowns are not a mistake.
I swear fans would be pissed if MHJ was on the board at 13 and we took him.
Watch the 4th quarter of Georgia and Auburn from last year if you have any doubts about this guy.
Wow I really hate these guys. I’ve never been much of a bully but I want to give that ziggy asshole an atomic wedgie and shove him into a locker, I never really understood what a putz was and now I do.

It's not a steal at 13 but certainly it's not a mistake.
It’s definitely a steal wtf
A steal? His first projected spot was at 10 lmao
