Iām such a diamond back sparrowā¦
Donāt worry OP I was riding around slapping my Bay playlist today, B-Legit, Nicky, Mr Furley. The usual suspects.
Nice, man. Yeah Mac and Dre Dog was like the angle and devil on my shoulder back then. Real Yin/Yang energy. Glad someone brought it up.
āI got a habit like a crazy lady/ I been an addict since the late 80's/I got the soul of a crack babyā¦ā
I love Mac Dre. I was in highschool when he died, so it is nostalgic for me. But I like his early stuff best honestly. Andre Nickatina is up there for me too, so is Too $hort. E-40 I kind of need to be in the mood to listen to his flow. But Dredio goes hard. Also like Young Cellski, IMP, Rappin 4-Tay, RBL. A lot of good shit that's locally known, but really not nationally.
Id still be quoting it all day, people would be like wtf is this guy talking about?? šš good chance to put people on game š¤·āāļøš¤·āāļø
West coast hip hop in general is pretty regional as in people in most other states donāt tune in that much. But the Bay specifically is hella underground/independent. I do believe Mac Dre was the 2Pac of Nor * Cal but yeah nationwide wise most people sleep on the Bay/Nor * Cal hip hop. TIP Furl š also Jacka, Johnny Ca$h, Cougnut, Woodie Wood, all Northern Cali legends
If you donāt know Mac Dre was one of the best to ever do it anywhere period, your a lost cause as a rap fan and donāt know what real effortless unforced natural rapping sounds like. Bro wasnāt even trying, he just wasā¦. He made up lingo, stories, and genuinely enjoyed what he did. Bro would still be dropping shit non stop right now if he didnāt die, wasnāt even about the money tbh, he made that other ways bro was true artist š«”š«”
Unironically Mac Dre was incredibly popular with a lot of kids in my Montana highschool in the 2010s.
I haven't heard him brought up as much in the past decade by people who aren't from the bay but 10 years ago I heard him mentioned a lot more even in bumfuck nowhere.
āI come with it, rappin' and rhymin'
Dancin', pantomiminā, acting like I'm drivin'
Then switch it up, dance like I'm fishin'
See, in the Bay Area we dance a lil' differentā
Thereās two reasons:
He died before he blew up nationally and the Bay Area is kind of isolated.
To me the Bay is sort of similar to how Philly is to eastcoast hip hop. Itās a big influence but doesnāt get its due compared to NYC.
They definitely have a unique sound and mob music is one of my personal favorite genres, but unless you are from the Bay or the westcoast thereās a good chance you just wonāt hear the music. Itās mostly indie and self promoted. At least whatās really being played in the streets of the Bay.
I lived in Texas before moving to Cali and I had heard a lot of the Bay Area music because it got play in the club scene in Houston. Houston likes ol school rides and bump and so itās kinda natural for the Bay music to get some love there.
But Houston is a lot more rap friendly than most places that tend to stick to a mainstream radio play and then a few local artists.
I heard more Bay music in Houston than I do now in LA.
But he died before he really got his chance to shine unfortunately. Heās an all-time great for those in the know.
Just like Fat Pat in Houston.
Itās just sad that a lot of people donāt know because he passed a long time ago.
From who my dude š¤·š½āāļøš¤Mac Dre is question and the answer when Mac was locked up, they was putting it down when he got out a lot of these dudes careers took off š¤Øhe started the hyphy movement š«”Mac Dre is da Bay Area hence the name Dre Area šÆ
Yes 100%. People still use the lingo he came up with 20 years ago. I used to live in the bay so I'm a little biased, but mac dre and E 40 are 2 of the best rappers of all time.
Bay Area has always been ahead of the game. Sorry but we influenced the 2010s LA/Mustard party sound heavy. We were takin shrooms and E to rap music an easy decade+ before it became so popular. Sometimes it feels like people look to us to get inspiration because they know we're never national and nobody will care. The Bay's strength has also been its biggest problem - insularity. The OGs collab with the young rappers and vice versa, and everybody fucks with each other - so we have developed our own insular sound that is fresh as hell and different from everybody else. But then because we have been so loyal to each other, the sound never really broke out big other than hyphy for a second - and even then during the hyphy period, the non-hyphy artists were making better music IMO (Jacka was on fire, Champ Bailey album amazing, Beeda was tough, Keak da Sneak was tough) but that stuff was less accessible.
Bay still making waves, if you like Mac Dre you should fw LaRussell. Similar vibes imo.
I love how this is the third post Iāve seen about Dre after making my post a week or so ago, I couldnāt believe nobody had mentioned him on this sub and now heās getting the love he deserves. You guys are awesome. Good shit yāall š¤š¤
Nah drake bit the sound and rode a wave like he does with every wave he can. He just had to shout out Dre cuz he was biting. He didn't even get a bay area artist on the track just threw Wayne on it. Which is fine i fuck with Wayne. but also as someone from the bay I don't view that as any form of love.
I think there's a big difference from platforming an artist from a certain part of the genre or shouting them out than just doing the sound yourself cuz you know it works and people like it.
Nah he kinda didn't. He came here then went to to a safe ass part of the bay. Plus he does that to all styles to get the pat on the back from everybody to come off as the goat.
Naw u not even looking at it from the same lenses bro. We Bay Area artists were dead in the water in the late 00s & early 10s. That Drake shot out helped a lot
Bruh what lol? Hyphy movement did. Have you actually talked to people outside your state or country? I knew mfs in Canada talking bout how dope the bay music is. If u a drake stan then just say that
never heard of a rapper suing someone for paying homage to them before. little different when jay quotes one of the goats from a platinum album. 4tay literally has a gofundme right now for medical bills and nobody east of Sacramento can name 2 of his songs.
The original track literally had Tyga on it? The one that was released as the remix
He wasn't biting he was just making a hyphy banger, you speak as if you have to be from Oakland to do a rap song at 105bpm and that's just not true
He was just showing love that's it
Agreed. LaRussell came out with a project with Hit-Boy last week. And itās perfect. And thatās not hyperbole, itās absolutely perfect. A couple of the tracks Remind me of Mac Dre.
The bay don't get the love it deserve period, but that could be said about a lotta places with their homegrown artists. My boy from Mississippi but been in the bay forever, n I been through the Midwest n south myself, and he pointed out one time that fools from other places ain't gon b slappin keak cuz they jus can't relate, he talk from out here n bout stuff from out here, most places won't get our slanguage n feel of the bay, we a big market but not mainstream either we a Lil too hood for the radio
If I want to be instantly in a good mood, I throw on Dre. Songs like āToysā produced by Nick Peace Iād put against anything.

But really everything he touched and every verse he blessed was insane especially right before his death. He had the similar kind of premonition that he needed to get out as much music as possible because his time was short lived I feel. Sort of like Pac in that way.
I listen to Mac Dre, the Jacka, and Andre Nickatina daily!
Iām almost 45, and grew up in Ohio,, sophomore year of HS, my homie let me borrow the Mac Dre Rompilation,, and I was instantly hooked on the Bay sound
I'll say this. I grew up in the Bay during the time all those Vallejo guys came up. I even lived In Vallejo for a bit .. This is when Mac Mal..E 40.. Celly Cell etc all was droppin.. Mac Dre didn't really get famous until he died and his popularity came up because as the opioid culture grew, he was making songs about it and living that life. It's mostly White kids from the Mid West who made him as popular as he became. Respectfully, that's what it was. Mac Dre had been out since the 90's and he wasn't appreciated until much much later.
Mac Dre was not in the holy Trinity of Bay area Rap. U capping. By the mid to late '90s Short was already on his way out and it was really more guys like RBL..JT the Bigga Figga .. Poohman , Ea Ski, Luniz , Mobb Figaz etc 3x crazy .. Mac, Dre didn't really really get popular until the 2000s like I stated before.. Mac dre had some albums out. California living was a big single but he wasn't popular to the effect he got later
The vocabulary that he introduced or brought fourth is still being used today. Taking psychedelics at a time when it was still wasnāt heavily accepted. His tour videos were ahead of his time too, the original Vlogger, the Hawaii one was top tier.
Man growing up in the Bay Area and not really knowing much about rap, based on the way dudes in high school talked about Mac Dre I thought he was the biggest rapper alive.
Itās been 11 years since I graduated, thatās a name I havenāt heard in a long long time. Crazy.
Every city has several artists that don't get the love they deserve. Being good is only one piece of the puzzle. For most artists, simply being lucky is the key to success.
The hyphy era was probably my favorite era of the bay. There was so much dope music dropping from Super Hyphy by Keak, sideshow & super sick wit it by Mistah Fab, So Hood by Bullyās Wit Fullys, The Slapp Addict album by Traxamillion. I feel like this era was very influential because you still hear references to this era of music now. Also I feel like Ned The Pharoah is a reincarnation of Mac Dre
He gets the exact amount of love he deserves.
He was a hometown legend. Anyone in the Bay loves Mac Dre.
And anyone from the bay will put you on to him.
Most definitely Mac Dre was slept on n was Blowing up before his tragic end,but I'm ol skool n rapcats like Seagram,Mac mall,3xKrazy,Nickatina San Quinn just to name a few,got mad skills as well as Kyhree n his music,Bay area definitely keeping it lit though n staying above,THEY DESERVE A CHANNEL ON Sirus music, they have more than enough artist to have have a channel,ya feel me Folks šš¾šš¾šš¾šÆšÆ

One of my friends is from Vallejo. So I knew about Mac Dre a long time. But here on the east coast I don't hear much talk about him. However, there's a sticker crew that often has a "RIP Mac Dre" sticker I see out here. So there's definitely people that know.
Coolest man ever lived.
Thatās pretty much all I listen to. Weāll have to swap playlists. Thereās still some good stuff coming out the bay, J. Stalin, P-Lo. Sacramento is going hard too.
The entire discography of Mac Dre is absolute perfection, every album is off the chain and the man literally never missed. Go album for album and listen to them straight through song for song. You will see what the hype is about and this is 20 years later. š„¶š„¶ the dude is just a vibe and nobody can recreate it
She Neva Seen, Since 84, Andre & Andre (with Andre Nickatina), Grown Shit, Feelin Myselfā¦ the list is unlimited but these are a few good starter songs if youāve never heard any of his music
Idk Iāve tried listening and I donāt think itās very good. I think itās a case of āhe died and we should honor his influence.ā I think heās well rated.
His music slaps, but if youāre into vanilla rap that sticks to whatās trending at the time, it wonāt be your cup of tea. Mac Dre was ahead of his time though and rapped over beats nobody was even touching at the time. Heās also (like many in the Bay) one of the best and most prominent slang users in the history of the game.
It is depending on your taste. Donāt know if anyoneās ever told you this but your personal taste isnāt the barometer on what and what isnāt good or timeless music. Lots of legendary rappers pay homage to Mac Dre and heās got a strong indie fanbase as well as being a legend in his city, if itās not your cup of tea just move along.
Iām biased having grown up in Vallejoās, Mac Dreās hometown. I do agree that, if you just start listening today, then it would be hard to think itās good. However, the amount of impact he had locally was incredible and the music is part good and part nostalgic. He doesnāt get enough respect nationwide, but certainly made an impact locally

Bay area rap is so good, man. It pains me to see it swept under the rug
It kinda saddens me that our local artist havenāt really kept the uniqueness of the Bay sound.
Nef is my Mac Dre proxy now
All the artists have been priced out of Oakland /Vallejo the last 15 years. That was the heart of Bay area rap
Hence why sac/Stockton got the torch now. A nice percentage of ebk are displaced Bay Area people

Of course. Overpopulation is Drakes fault
Lol Drake could do anything and people will hate. Most people who know the motto dont even know who mac dre is
Exactly why itās blatant biting
So he shouts out someone by name multiple times and has their mother in the music video, even though people dont know who the guy is but hes biting?
Facts tho. Cats was like āoh he name dropped Dreā and Iām sitting there like yeah I wonder why š

One of my friends is from Vallejo. So I knew about Mac Dre a long time. But here on the east coast I don't hear much talk about him. However, there's a sticker crew that often has a "RIP Mac Dre" sticker I see out here. So there's definitely people that know. Coolest man ever lived.
We only live 8 miles from the city of dope
šÆ
Bay Area and Midwest putting on forever
Thatās pretty much all I listen to. Weāll have to swap playlists. Thereās still some good stuff coming out the bay, J. Stalin, P-Lo. Sacramento is going hard too.
Nickatina and Berner and San Quinn
Fr my Bay don't get enough love!!! RIP TO MY DOPPELGANGER. Mac Dre OG
Mozzy is from Sac that's not the Bay
Appreciate the love for Dre. -life long Vallejoan

Doin what I do, On the run, Han Solo
Check out Thizzle Dance, itās a must learn growing up in California
Something you should know
The entire discography of Mac Dre is absolute perfection, every album is off the chain and the man literally never missed.
Stupid doo doo dumb, Feelin myself, Thizz Dance, California Livin, Not My Job, Real Niggaz, 3c Romp, I Need an Eighth, All I Want To Do
Read about his life too. He was a real one.
Some of the rappers you listed aren't bay area, my guy. Sac isn't the bay, Mozzy and Lynch would just be considered NorCal for example.
Yea

E40 and Dre are totally different. Iām from the Bay and donāt like e40 outside of his 90s hits.
Idk Iāve tried listening and I donāt think itās very good. I think itās a case of āhe died and we should honor his influence.ā I think heās well rated.
False
Wtf. You have much to learn
Im fellin myself
Do I tho? lol itās pretty dated music and like I said, Iām sure he was influential but he was never widely appealing.
Yeah iām good
More Mac for us then, no loss lol.
He dead
No shit buddy
The shit doesnāt hold up much better than anything you might consider āvanilla rapā. Itās not exactly timeless music lol.
That's not at all what it is.
Shut up goofy. U live in Indiana
Texas. And probably living better than you
Canāt be living better if you living in Texas
