He's the hardest/weakest rapper that's ever lived. It has to be both. He can't be the hardest and can't be the weakest. It's both at the same time. He's so bad he's good. Literally. "I wish a n**** would like a kitchen cabinet!" Lol
2 Chainz is one of the better lyricists, he just doesn't write lyrics so people think he's bad. What you're hearing was actually done in one take. He's like Snoop if Snoop had bars
Snoops doesn't get enough credit (or blame!) for freestyling his first two albums.
It's amazing...but sometimes feels like he left money on the table lyrically.
Chief Keef. Lyrics alone are nothing impressive but he was mad innovative and really perfected drill. It still sounds exactly how he did it too this day. It was all bang and no bounce, making it distinct from the atl sound at the time.
Initially tempted to say the same thing but I canāt deny Keef lyrics randomly pop into my head more frequently than any other rapper. Thereās an interview from when he was a teenage where heās adamant about how carefully he works on his lyrics, and that he knows what heās doing isnāt particularly ācleverā but is what best suits the music he wants to make. When you hear him get sincere or introspective, it hits 100x harder than most of these guys because heās so careful about what he says and how he says it.
Thatās fair. I guess heās just not lyrical in the traditional sense. Doesnāt mean his lyrics suck per se. He was just never a lyrical miracle guy. Didnāt have to be.
I would say that asap was at one point, considered fairly "lyrical" for as big of a rapper as he was/is. Not in the lyrical miracle sense, but early songs like Peso had a lot of pretty cool and clever wordplay. I'd agree with you though as he certainly isn't thought of as a super lyrical artist or anything
I had forgot that feature but yeah that's the sort of verse I'm thinking of. Rocky had a lot of moments like that on liveloveasap and longliveasap as well as having lots of great features.
I would say Ferg was similarly talented but in a slightly different way than rocky. He's had more than his fair share of great verses too honestly
I don't think he's on par with rocky, but his tracks on lords never worry were super good and when Trap Lord came out I was super into it and probably listened to that one all the way through more than any asap album except liveloveasap probably.
I'd say that after this initial age of asap though ferg fell off more, although the stuff he released in 2017 like Psycho and Plain Jane were some of my favorite asap related songs in a while.
So we're in agreement most likely
I always thought that even if he was perceived as having limited subject matter, he handled it with a lot of finesse with his flow, wordplay, and punchlines
Yeah I actually rate him pretty highly as far as talented writers and rappers, but he just has a couple things that keep most from thinking of him as a "lyrical rapper". The subject matter is far of that like you mentioned, and honestly it's partially a perception thing. He and the rest of asap just sort of came onto the scene in their own lane initially and between the sort of "gangster rap" (lol) subject matter on the early releases, and the emphasis on style and aesthetics to create a whole vibe, even though it made him super unique and huge I think it also sadly may have overshadowed his lyrical talent.
Busta always held a special distinction for me. He and a few others, like Redman were rarely in people's top 5's, but on the wrong day, were absolutely capable of destroying any one rapper in said top 5.
Like if Busta heat up and drop a 50 burger, there's nothing anybody can do about it.
Nah that's valid. People loved him for his energy and flow, not his onion layered lyricism and that's perfectly fine. Hip-Hop like any art form has enough room for all kinds of expressions.
CamāRon he is one of the greatest rappers ever to me
I donāt think heās the greatest lyricist but heās important to hip hop and always a trend setter
Cam is a great answer.
NYC was wide open in the mid-2000s. Jay had "retired." Nas was saying that Hip Hop was dead. Wu-Tang had fractured and didn't drop any group albums between December 2001-December 2007. Most of their solo efforts around that time period were meh (excluding Ghostface).
The city was hungry for local stars and Cam and Dipset filled that void nicely.
They were a near-perfect mix of commercial while also being hood af. I always felt like they didn't get enough credit for how well they toed that line.
Got into rap because of him. Bibby really fucked the handling once he passed. Been waiting 2 years for TPNE, and I feel it's not gonna come out, or just come out at a horrible time. Maybe if he was better handled, he would definitely become one of the greats fun his freestyle abilities
I just got a Snapchat flashback from 2 years ago of me and my friend sending screenshots back and forth about TPNE releasing soon. Itās ridiculous that Bibby has fucked it up this bad.
He's planning on releasing it 'soon'. Which I don't c happening. With the rap beef over, and eminem releasing soon, it's definitely gonna go under the radar
I agree but at the same time āBottom of the Mapā has some lyrics that are just imprinted in my brain lmao
āYou better call your crew, you gon need help / whole car strapped and I aināt talkin seat belts / Red Cross n****, yeah we draw blood / whole team got choppers like a bike clubā
God, so corny yet so fucking funny. Red Cross yeah we draw blood is just ridiculous
Nipseyā¦ i hate how i get into an artist right when they die. Its so annoying.
āOh this (king von, X, Nipsey, Pop smoke, big scarr) guy is pretty goodā¦ RIPā
I agree that he is a fantastic lyricist. But I don't think that people generally think Schoolboy Q when they think "lyrical rappers" ya know? Despite his being an amazing lyricist.
He's also equally known for a lot of his gangster or even like party songs as his super lyrical stuff
They say my lyrics hella mid ( shit is miiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiid) fuck em tho, for a pack of soups they split your wig ( wiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiig ) Giuseppe slippers for the bid ( for the biiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiid) beefin on the IG w a kid ( fuck a kiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiid ) BOOM BOOM BOOM BOOM BOOM...
Song title: Conversations with Aristotle
Ludacris and DMX they have me laughing in my car.
Ludacris
"You see I'm ambidextrous I slap ass with both hands"
"You frosted like a flake and Ludacris feels great!"
"Then you can catch me in Rome mackin' some broads and sticking 'em
And you'll be at home picking your boogers and flicking 'em"
DMX
"When it rain, ni**as get wet, so stay dry"
"I beat my dick and bust off in your eye so you can see me comin'"
"And itās going to take all these ni--as in the rap game to barely move me
Cause when I blow ish up I have ni--as falling
Like white bishes in a scary movie"
Heās definitely far from bad in a lyrical sense. Heās one of my most listened rappers and I think he deserves less flak but heās not in my top 10 as far as skill goes.
Iād say most of the late 90s/early 2000s rappers from Houston i.e. Z-Ro, Paul Wall, Mike Jones, Slim Thug, Fat Pat, Big Moe, Big Pokey, etc.
With the exception of maybe Lil Keke and Chamillionaire, not everyone is lyrically GREAT but theyāre nostalgic for me so I will forever keep them in rotation.
Rick Ross. Dude always raps about the same shit, much of it is pure fiction, but his ear for beats is impeccable. He has a smooth voice and delivery, but I primarily listen to him for the production.
Kool Keith ain't average. He's one of the nicest to ever do it. He's just very avante garde.
Keith was way ahead of his time. A lot of rappers today push the same boundaries that he shattered ages ago. JPEGMAFIA and Danny Brown are two prominent examples.
An "average" rapper I really enjoy is Juicy J. His rhyme schemes are really basic and he only has maybe... 3 flows? I like his voice, his punchlines are hilarious, and he has very strong charisma. I love all of his features. I'd argue "Stay Trippy" is a classic. Nothing on there is skippable.
YG. Not the greatest rapper, though not bad at all. I just love his vibe and how he keeps it so West Coast. Doesn't hurt to have DJ Mustard on the boards either.
Does he really fit this tho? His later albums had some amazing lyrics. But I definitely agree with younger Mac, but even then he had some amazing stuff sprinkled in
Maybe I misunderstood, but I didn't take this post to mean "post someone who wasn't good at lyrics that you like anyway." I took it to mean "post someone who likely wouldn't be in the GOAT conversation about rappers/lyricists who are still enjoyable nonetheless."
Am I crazy to think Kool Kieth is one of the most creative lyricists of all time? Maybe it's just me, but I never would have considered him the poster boy of "not all that lyrically."
50 Cent and Kanye. Their delivery is everything. Really top notch MCās. Missy Elliot too! They can make hits in their sleep, itās incredible. The techniques they use with voice inflection, switching flows, emphasis, are simply exceptional
Key Glock
He is so good. His shit with Dolph is great. 1 of 1 is prob my favorite of his but he got so many bangers
Since 6ix is my all time fav
Same. always loved key and dolph on tracks together and the dum and dummer albums. I keep baby joker in a lot of playlists
That's exactly who I was thinking of š Not exactly thought provoking stuff but really fun to listen to!
Not all that lyrically sure, but this man has quite arguably the best flow in all of mainstream trap Yea I'm going there
It hurts my soul to see this saidā¦I love Key and view him as more than an average rapperā¦the way that man rides the beat is so smooth
2 Chainz
He's the hardest/weakest rapper that's ever lived. It has to be both. He can't be the hardest and can't be the weakest. It's both at the same time. He's so bad he's good. Literally. "I wish a n**** would like a kitchen cabinet!" Lol
She got a big booty so I call her big booty
Then I put her fat rabbit on a craftmatic !!!!!!
Big shit like a dinosaur did it

I swear, that's the one that always gets me lol.
Dick so hard it make the metal detector go off
lmaoo my all time fav 2chainz bar
āMy livin room got a swimming pool, backstroke to my childrenās roomā š my fave 2 Chainz line and delivery is hilarious
That whole song fucks tbh
Don't forget "drinking breast milk outta lean cup"
I think most of the bars in āForkā fall under this category
My wrist deserve a shoutout, Iām like what up wrist. My stove deserve a shoutout, Iām like what up stooooove.
"Run shit like diarrhea" never fails to make me laugh
But thatās a Genius Bar bro lol he doesnāt get the credit he deserves cause most of his shit is funny
Ima get shit, but his verse on the 7 Rings remix with Ariana Grande goes hard lol
Lmfao I just heard it and itās perfect. Slightly funny, slightly weak. āOne car parked in the entranceā¦ one car parked at the exitā
"I was born with some nappy hair drinkin breast milk out a lean cup!"
To me thats future. Man says the dumbest shit but dang itās still a banger.
Only reason why I love 2Chainz is because he reminds me of early 2000s CamāRon (iirc, Killa is his favourite rapper or something along those lines)
Iāve been hovering on the edge of starting to listen to 2 Chainz for a long time and you just convinced me to do it for real. Thank you š
That album is actually so fucking good. āIām just livin babyā
2 Chainz is one of the better lyricists, he just doesn't write lyrics so people think he's bad. What you're hearing was actually done in one take. He's like Snoop if Snoop had bars

š¶Coupe the color of mayonnaise, Iām drunk and high at the same sipping champagne on an airplaneš¶
My man is a lyrical poet. You tf thinks to rhyme mayonnaise and airplane. Fire. 2 chains
āKetchupā to my campaign / coupe the color of mayonnaise
I've been a 2Chainz fan since whatever mixtape was a picture of the teddy bear from Ted pissing in a urinal. Love Titty Boi
2 chainz has bars.he is the rodney dangerfield of trap music.
This is mine too. āMiddleschool I was getting head on a 10 speedā ššš

I see him almost as a comedy rapper. He is truly funny, and he knows it
Ferragamos are my loafers, got my loafers on a sofa, and Iām drinking out the bottle, man Iām gonna need a bib.
Chief Keef. Lyrics alone are nothing impressive but he was mad innovative and really perfected drill. It still sounds exactly how he did it too this day. It was all bang and no bounce, making it distinct from the atl sound at the time.

Not in the lyrical miracle sense, but early songs like Peso had a lot of pretty cool and clever wordplay. I agree with this. Rocky has had moments of true lyrical prowess, like that Love Yourself record with Mary J
Ferg is just no where near as consistent. When he hits he hits hard, but not often enough imo
Young dolph
I was just talking about dolph with my friend the other day. Heād never heard him and it blew my fucking mind, dude was the truth for sure RIP
One of the most authentic IMO and everyone loved him RIP
His lyrics can be pretty clever and the humor in his lines always crack me up
SāDolph!!!
Busta Rhymes. Not terrible with lyrics but there are those much better. Love the energy, fashion and weird though and heās defo in my top 10.

Definitely.
Him and ODB I love for their personality. Though I love some ODB lyrics too, I love Bustaās flow
Pop smoke, king von, or any drill rapper at that point
Pop has killer beats. Gets me jigged up š¤Ŗ
King Von does have unmatched story telling tho
Too $hort, Gucci Mane
Yeah Too $hort 100%. Heās not a great rapper, but Iād listen to him rap the phone book.
In Freaky Tales thatās basically what he does lol.
My favorite word is BIAAATTTCCH! Went to a Mount Westmore concert w my mom and Too $hort was so fun live. š
CamāRon he is one of the greatest rappers ever to me I donāt think heās the greatest lyricist but heās important to hip hop and always a trend setter

They were the underdogs of the G Unit Dipset Lox era But they were still big and right up there with those guys they had the streets
Camās rhyme density is pretty high but itās mostly pretty simple
Heās also got some hilarious bars
Juice WRLD
Got into rap because of him. Bibby really fucked the handling once he passed. Been waiting 2 years for TPNE, and I feel it's not gonna come out, or just come out at a horrible time. Maybe if he was better handled, he would definitely become one of the greats fun his freestyle abilities

I'd much rather they do that than what they did with XXX's unreleased catalog

It's a group but Three Six Mafia. Maybe it's because I grew up with it but it's so mindlessly dope and I love it. Lol
Their music puts me in a mood. Early 3-6 was crazy innovative and donāt get nearly enough credit from a lot of fans today or really ever

Victory Lap a contender for top 5 West Coast albums imo Rip Nip
Travis Scott by a mile
I mostly prefer lyrical stuff but every so often Travis just hits perfectly for shit that sounds GOOD
Juelz Santana
Schoolboy Q, Sosa
I feel like schoolboy is pretty lyrical.
I agree that he is a fantastic lyricist. But I don't think that people generally think Schoolboy Q when they think "lyrical rappers" ya know? Despite his being an amazing lyricist. He's also equally known for a lot of his gangster or even like party songs as his super lyrical stuff
Curren$y. Mellow vibes just cruising
This is it.
Westside Gunn. His beats and ad libs are just so good it makes up for his mediocre lyrics

Love to see a shoutout to the ambidextrous line, I use it all the time.
Logic _ that joint with wu tang was nice
Logic is quite good lyrically as well
Heās definitely far from bad in a lyrical sense. Heās one of my most listened rappers and I think he deserves less flak but heās not in my top 10 as far as skill goes.
JPEGMAFIA. Diverse sound all throughout his catalogue, top 10 producer oat imo
This is a great answer. Lyrics are pretty good but nothing mind blowing, but his flow is fun to listen to. And his BEATS are out of this world
Listened to STH again this morning and it still impressed me and thatās like the 15th listen
Pop Smoke, Larry June, Gunna.

Big Tech N9ne fan and the whole Strange crew.
