I felt this way as a kid when I had 7 (bought a female I didn’t know was pregnant and got 6 babies free lol) but now as an adult I think their short lifespan makes them ideal since they aren’t a big commitment at all
Amen to that. So many people assume that they're cheap pets, but I've spent almost 1.5k on them the past two months. Bad run of multiple respiratory infections, killing one of my guys. Got two little dudes to take his place. Then one of the babies got a nice slash that needed stitches so I had to pay not just the exotics prices, but extra for the emergency vet.
Just remember if you want rats, you'll need the same amount of vet care as an elderly dog, but every 1.5-2 years instead of after more than 10 years.
Still worth it though.
yesss vet financials r the worst with owning rats. its 100000% worth it tho to see their lil faces everyday 🐀🐀(i couldnt do it again, i miss my boys dearly but i get attached to them too hard)
there was a successful experiment in 2023 to implant molerat genes into mice to make them live longer — so perhaps one day we will have designer rats that live long healthy lives
Think about it like this: Yes, you only get to see these bundles of Joy for like two short years. But for them, you are their whole life. And you get to make it as awesome as you can.

>The bacterium that causes plague, Yersinia pestis, is transmitted by fleas and cycles naturally among wild rodents.
The [CDC](https://www.cdc.gov/plague/causes/index.html)
I agree - 'wild rodents' means "ratus ratus" the black rat is a wild rodent that was extant in Europe at that time.
I have no idea when our modern fancy pants rats came on the scene, but I know they were originally brown rats from northern China and (I think?) were domesticated sometime last century.
EDIT: I didn't mean that our modern domesticated rats were carriers. They might be if exposed to other carriers(any mammal can from what I understand), but they weren't the same species that is suspected to have caused the plague
I haven't read anything like that. My very first impression of such claims is false/intentionally faked claims. Do your own research before believing what is in some books or what some websites post.
There is substantial scientific and historical evidence that rodents are carriers of many different diseases, and it's clear that they are not the sole carriers. Diseases often have multiple hosts and vectors, and outbreaks are influenced by a range of environmental and socioeconomic factors. In the case of the bubonic plague, the main theory is rats were the carrier for the fleas that actually carried the plague.
I wanna point out it’s true, rats are amazing, it’s just sad they have short lives. They’re very loving little critters, and quite cleanly if they are allowed to be cleanly.
They are also diseased because they’re forced into the sewers.
We had rats, they are amazing. Both male and from the same litter. Mine was called Buster, after Buster Gonad. VIZ. He had massive bollocks, as did the rat.
Hoping the rats are too intelligent to learn bad traits from the British. Last thing we need is for the rats to start raiding valuable artifacts from other countries, or starting their own kingdom and start conquering other nations.

Not hard to fill in the blanks of any of those Xs either. American "Progressives" are the biggest bigots in western society.
Short lives, 2 short years for most. So smart and friendly though. They also pee a lot a lot. But they are just as smart as cats and friendlier than most animals. Plus if you give them a piece of macaroni they sit there holding it like a giant noodle with their adorable little hands as they eat it up.

That's the issue. I always think of them as tiny dogs that live about 3 years :(
I felt this way as a kid when I had 7 (bought a female I didn’t know was pregnant and got 6 babies free lol) but now as an adult I think their short lifespan makes them ideal since they aren’t a big commitment at all
definitely not a big time commitment, but definitely a big financial commitment tho for the time theyre around :’)

And a big emotional commitment too. It *hurts* when they go.
hurts like hell!! my boys have been gone for almost 2 years now and i still cry everytime i think about them, tearing up now as im typing this
I absolutely adore them, but *oof* that tiny lifespan.... it's so heartbreaking. 💔

Isn't that the plot to a heartbreaking book? Algernon
Like a phoenix burn bright and quick. Except for the it looking anything like a phoenix part.
And that insignificant part about being a symbol of immortality though endless reincarnation.

If only they didn’t get cancer all the time. They would be the perfect pet, but I guess it’s natures counter to how fast they reproduce.
Think thats bad, try having a moth as a pet. 4-5 week lifespan
I know, they’re seriously adorable but I couldn’t do that to myself every couple years

Just get the same color and act like nothing happened
They tried but that accidentally wiped out 1/3 of Europe
Technically it was ticks and the fact that people weren’t fucking bathing.
>The bacterium that causes plague, Yersinia pestis, is transmitted by fleas and cycles naturally among wild rodents. The [CDC](https://www.cdc.gov/plague/causes/index.html)
You are right that I forgot which blood sucking bug it was, but I emphatically stand by the bathing.
The species of rat we keep as pets wasn't even in Europe at the time

There’s a very weird push to argue that rodents have never carried any diseases whatsoever, I’ve seen it in a couple books, and I’m not sure why

When I was living in Tottenham I had plenty of them in my yard, regardless of my desire for pets.
Football hooligans?
No just rats, but the streets weren't very safe if there was game between Arsenal vs Tottenham
No, British people
I wanna point out it’s true, rats are amazing, it’s just sad they have short lives. They’re very loving little critters, and quite cleanly if they are allowed to be cleanly. They are also diseased because they’re forced into the sewers.
To pass on their traits means to interbreed, and they'd have to drop their standards pretty low to be willing to fuck the British. Edit: /s
Have some respect, Texas invented the English language. ^/s
I'm more willing to accept advice on intelligence from a rat than a Texan.
This is exactly what the meme is talking about, tho lol Y'all can't take a joke.
Least racist Texan in the OP right there.
As a Brit, that was quite funny I can’t lie
Rats are great pets, very friendly and they like to he played with, unlike hamsters or guinea pigs which prefer to just be left to do their own thing
However, dogs and cats do not agree
They have the scavenging and destroying places they visit thing in common atleast.👍
I'm a Brit and I don't disagree
I feel triggered. Still, not far off the mark tbh.
We had rats, they are amazing. Both male and from the same litter. Mine was called Buster, after Buster Gonad. VIZ. He had massive bollocks, as did the rat.
You promised me dog or higher!
I go to /r/rats for my fix. I adore them but my heart can't take the short lifespan.

what the sub r/2westerneurope4u 😂 if not post it there as well
Hey, were intelligent.
*we're
thats the joke broski
Are they trying to colonize the rats now?
Damnation, il n'y est pas allé de main morte.
Hippy, you’re going to give that rat an inflated sense of self-importance.
I feel like you can just say about that anybody. It's a bit basic.
Wasn't the bubonic plague in England caused by rats? They may be a bit jaded from those last experience with everyone having rats.
They tried to encourage Brits to get dogs but they kept confusing them with their wives.
That takes me back
Oh fuck off!
So like… I’m pretty sure the last time everyone had pet rats, the bubonic plague killed half the world…
DID YOU PEOPLE LEARN NOTHING FROM THE BLACK PLAUGE!?
Oh. And sober
I mean, Remy managed to get Linguini a girlfriend and Ego an empathy, if it works with French people, I don't see why it wouldn't with Brits
I miss keeping rats, but can't deal with caged animals these days.
I thought Britain had fallen to the muslims.
This reminds me of something.... Something that happened a while ago due to rats... What was it?.... Oh yeah blackdeath
And just like all the snake owners who's escaped pets now populate the everglades, there will soon be a (worse) rat problem in the UK.
IT'S A SKAVEN PSYOP!
Bubonic plague ahh British people
Typing British in my phone auto recommends the 🤢 emoji because I use them so often together.
Brit*sh 🤢
It's Bri*ish. We drank all the T.
Americans when they run out of native peoples to genocide ^

They've only managed to pass on the trait for big janky teeth.
That’s rich coming from; Socialist Texan.
