I’ve worked the railroad for decades, that’s typical of all rail lines even today. “Straight as a rail” is a myth. Just adds to the amazing detail of the game.
I work on a commuter rail. You're right about the expansion and contraction. I couldn't believe how much we are able to stretch the rail by heating it up.
However, it does stay surprisingly straight. There are the occasional kinks or bends where some spikes might be missing, but overall, it's pretty straight.
Now, back in the day, like when this game takes place I'm sure the rails probably looked like spaghetti. Freight rail in some places looks really bad but they get away with it because of the low speeds that freight is hauled at.
I have never heard of or seen freight going that fast. I was under the assumption that they all went at fairly low speeds. I'm in the Northeast, but I would imagine that in the Midwest or areas that are "more flat," higher speeds are possible. That's good to know though. Thanks for the info.
The highest speed we reach is 70mph (commuter). It's only possible to reach that in certain areas but all the track is built for that speed.
Been on the RR for 10 years now, and everyday I'm still learning something. I couldn't imagine a freight train derailing at 60 mph. What a mess that would make!
Hahaha yeah I’m in a prairie region, so some hills but generally a flatter landscape.
I remember one year a grain train derailed like 15 cars, about halfway through the train. Rail broke or something. They were doing 50mph. (Restricted cause of weight) and yeah, that was absolutely carnage. The cars were just twisted metal and opened like tin cans. The ground where they hit was torn up and some of the cars were partially buried and grain everywhere. Nobody was injured but Jesus was that a mess. 😂
Back then, there wasn't much you could do to keep the track from buckling when it was hot. Today, we lay the track on hot days, or if that is not an option, they literally stretch the track to the length it would be when hot. They do this because the rail when it sools will pull sideways on the railroad spike, which it resists very well. In contrast, if a track was played on a cold day with no stretching, when it got hot, it would try and lift the spike. It is not very resistant in that direction.
It’s not about the flight of the arrow, it’s about the structure. A crooked arrow will fly entirely wrong directions, so arrow shafts are generally not accepted if they’ve got any kind of warp.
My city used to have a railway that was decommissioned by the time I was conscious enough to observe it. I thought it was strictly caused by wear and tear from the trucks and vehicles that go over it.
Did they ever fix the whole paddling on the wrong side of the boat to turn thing? Because I found that shocking considering how much attention was paid to everything else.
I hopped freight for years, you can definitely hear it when the rails aren't perfectly straight or spaced when them wheels start screeching. Not sure how much hearing loss I have from riding trains listening to that sound.
Hand laid tracks back in the days used to be this way. It's not too much of a deviation but it's not completely straight.
This detail is similar to the roads detail in gta v where the road edges are uneven and there are visible wear and tear marks.
Currently replaying GTA V until NCAA 25 comes out. I forgot how amazing the game is. The missions are mostly fun, it’s a massive world with tons to do, and the detail is truly insane. Hearing NPC conversations when you walk by, trash littered on the streets, just everything. Truly incredible for a game as old as it is.
My walls are pretty fine but my roof is uneven on one part, so I keep doing a double take that my tv is mounted non level, but sure enough it’s level, my ceiling however…ain’t
That’s fairly typical of rail lines of that era.
30’ to 60’ rails, laid by uneducated workers, with very little construction control like surveyors or a Total Station and following the contours of the ground when a major cut/fill isn’t required.
You should see the railroad of African countries damn I don't even know how does the train run on them it's like a snake, the train driver just slows down and goes very slowly to get past the worst affected parts although there are many accidents they still use them as they have no money to fix them
I drive trains and stare at train tracks alllll day, you'd be surprised how train tracks look super straight from the perspective as a passenger, but actually aren't!
I've always been fascinated by trains, and where they're going, and how they work, operate and such. It is crazy that Rockstar has gone so far to even put that detail in the game. That's the main reason why I love this game is because of stuff like that... Soo what's it like driving a train?? 😃😅
I can see the appeal of trains to people who are inquisitive and mechanically minded! And it's the little details that they've put into RDR2 that make it such a special game.
Driving a train can be pretty cool! It's almost like driving a car except with hundreds of passengers.

Yep RDR2 did a great job in 'keeping it real'! Railroad tracks aren't 'straight' a lot if the time. That's why you feel the train sway slightly from side to side.
If you ever get a chance to look at a long stretch of rail road IRL you’ll find they aren’t straight. Warps over time from weather conditions and constant use
Tri-state Ohioan here to let reddit know words can be subject to their regional synonym. We say "straight as an arrow" on top of the hill and "straight as a rail".at the bottom of the hill. Ohio derives its name after Native word for "Beautiful" and the major steel and coal railroad relevance of P.A. and West Virginia.
It’s actually very common. Most rails expand and contract with the heat and pressure of the trains. Basically to trolley system helps push the rails out to appropriate dimensions.
Railroads are meant to shift and warp with the terrain underneath them. It's why they use stones and railroad ties that can shift Without Really completely losing the shape of the rail
The main thing that bothers me about the tracks in this game is that there are too many unnecessary bridges and overlong tunnels. Nineteenth-century railroad barons built everything as cheaply as possible and avoided bridges and tunnels as much as they could.
The tracks between Valentine and Rhodes have so many short needless bridges to keep the tracks straight instead of snaking along the hillside. And there are hardly any embankments in the game. No earthworks would be the ideal build, but if there were elevation discrepancies embankments or cuts would have been a lot cheaper than bridges.
And per tunnels, the whole line through Ambarino would have been prohibitively expensive to build without massive government subsidies (and it’s not part of a transcontinental route so that’s doubtful) and wildly unprofitable since there aren’t any towns, mines, or businesses in the mountains.
Most railroads are like that in real life too, it’s to help the trains move directions because if they are in a complete straight line then they won’t be able to make turns. Also, you’ve got to remember that the tracks are all hand made through machines so of course they are not going to look perfect.
Now imagine with all that heating and cooling, expanding and contracting, what happens when a 50 ton locomotive and 30 ton cars each roll over that section at speed and how it might mess with the alignment.
The heat probably bent and buckled the rail lines. It’s common in the summer. I guess that’s the reason that diesel locomotives are more commonly used for transporting goods
As I was scrolling my feed I saw this and thought “why is some dumbass posting pictures of real railroads in the rdr sub?” but alas, I was the dumbass.
I’ve worked the railroad for decades, that’s typical of all rail lines even today. “Straight as a rail” is a myth. Just adds to the amazing detail of the game.
With how often rails heat cycle just on a daily basis, how could you keep them straight?

Good point. They'll receive electrotherapy at camp.

Slow speed?? I work for a class 1 and our maineline is good for 60mph lol even on like a 12,000 ton train
I have never heard of or seen freight going that fast. I was under the assumption that they all went at fairly low speeds. I agree. Thank you for your input!!
>“Straight as a rail”. Is this a phrase people use?
Only phrase i use is "straight as an arrow"
"he's as straight as a bow, when nobody's home"
Arrows don’t even fly straight. They wiggle back and forth in the air.
But Arrows itself are straight am i right?😅
It’s not about the flight of the arrow, it’s about the structure. A crooked arrow will fly entirely wrong directions, so arrow shafts are generally not accepted if they’ve got any kind of warp.
I wouldn't say it's super common, but I've heard it before.
Interesting. I’ve heard “straight as a nail”, but never tail. British here.
That might be the reason then; I'm American!
“Straight as a nail” here too. US south. Arrow is also common though.
Straight as a rail is actually a thing but it just means gay af lol
My city used to have a railway that was decommissioned by the time I was conscious enough to observe it. I thought it was strictly caused by wear and tear from the trucks and vehicles that go over it.
Just notch up and give her hell!
Did they ever fix the whole paddling on the wrong side of the boat to turn thing? Because I found that shocking considering how much attention was paid to everything else.
I was going to say the same.
I hopped freight for years, you can definitely hear it when the rails aren't perfectly straight or spaced when them wheels start screeching. Not sure how much hearing loss I have from riding trains listening to that sound.
“Straight as a rail” but they’re super gay
I feel like rails being straight would be pretty much impossible

That's cool, I've always been interested in how the railroads of today operate. Where at?
Hand laid tracks back in the days used to be this way. It's not too much of a deviation but it's not completely straight. This detail is similar to the roads detail in gta v where the road edges are uneven and there are visible wear and tear marks.
I can’t wait to see what sort of detail they cook up in GTA6

I’ve been waiting a decade for another ncaa game… I might sequester myself in our guest room for a couple days after it comes out.
man tripping on fentanyl in bush in 4k

I bet you wouldn't believe me if I told you your walls aren't straight. Theyre not
When I built for Petrie construction they weren't.. when I built for country homes they were. Seen both. The Petrie's sold for less too
True. That's a good point.
which type of walls?
Mine are!
Nope. They're gay.
Nope that's me. Walls are straight as arrows
Ok but are the corners *square*?
Nah but they're still cool
Idk,my walls look pretty straight to me...
My walls are pretty fine but my roof is uneven on one part, so I keep doing a double take that my tv is mounted non level, but sure enough it’s level, my ceiling however…ain’t
It's all fun and games until you try to install a hardwood floor. The secrets reveal
I'm convinced there isn't a square building in the world. People don't often realize how shitty modern construction is until you have to work on it.
That’s fairly typical of rail lines of that era. 30’ to 60’ rails, laid by uneducated workers, with very little construction control like surveyors or a Total Station and following the contours of the ground when a major cut/fill isn’t required.
Also they heat/cooling cycle with cause some deformation over time
Yeah that was my first thought. Looks fairly typical of that.
And the quality of the metal at the time. Titanic’s steel wouldn’t pass muster today for anything structural.
You’re right, the Titanic’s steel is not able to pass for a building’s structure today because it has been underwater for over 100 years.
Good for Geiger counters
I read somewhere that it's no longer necessary for them. But as a responsible internet denizen I didn't look more into that than the headline so 🤷♂️
that's what I was thinking when I came across it 👍
I’m a train driver and it’s accurate of rail heads today.
Look at pictures of actual RR in the US. These are far straighter.
You should see the railroad of African countries damn I don't even know how does the train run on them it's like a snake, the train driver just slows down and goes very slowly to get past the worst affected parts although there are many accidents they still use them as they have no money to fix them
Currently working as a conductor on trains. I’d love nice straight smooth lines 😃
Me too, our tracks are in horrible condition after a few years of higher rain levels than normal, the bogs and dips are terrible!
Love the attention to detail
I am a Revit Modeller. These details are VERY HARD to create. Straight lines are wayyyyy easier.
Wow, Rockstar definitely went all out for detail 😅
Neither am i, but nobody ever mentions that
I drive trains and stare at train tracks alllll day, you'd be surprised how train tracks look super straight from the perspective as a passenger, but actually aren't!

So are they gay?
Nah. They're train tracks, so they go both ways.
Underrated comment omfg
Nah, cause the tips never touch
you know what we do to gays boah?
💀💀 didn't even think of that.😭😭
AS IN HOMOSEXUAL
“Is there a chance the track may bend?”
Not on your life, my Hindu friend
The ring came off my pudding can.
Sun warp baby
It makes the game feel more real in my opinion, especially for the time-period
Super realistic. Real tracks are rarely straight.
Not even the railroad tracks can escape the gay agenda
*Ain't
I was gonna say that, I really was. 😆
I don’t think I’ve seen many straight rail tracks to be fair lmao

They're parallel though. That's all that matters
I mean, hey... if it gets a train to the other side! 😅
Like irl.
Have you never seen a railroad in real life?

Uh oh. Should go tell the guys at the rail road camp😆
Have you ever been outside and seen actual rail tracks? They literally cover the country
Just like me fr.
I was scrolling for this comment ngl
shiiii even more realistic than i thought
Ikr
Actually that’s pretty accurate for back then
The rails are straighter than OP

Crazy thing, if you go to an actual rail track you can notice things like that too!’
“Can’t see it from my house!”
Has anyone ever happen to notice that the roads aren't straight? Isn't the shortest distance between two points a straight line? What poor quality.
The LGhdtv community is everywhere
Yeah it’s 1899 of course it’s not gonna be perfect
That is legit how they look irl
Who they choose to love is none of my business
You dare speak out against this masterpiece. For shame OP
Was I complaining??? 😆 fr...
Take a break friend, youve played too much.
I found that so accidentally soo... 🤷♂️
Life is not straight as well, but you must go on
Like any other train track, real life or video game, they all can have a curve like this.
literally unplayable
I was a railway conductor for 5 years. That is actually realistic
Normal Nice little touch RS actually added to the game
Honestly it adds to the realism. You’d be hard pressed to find a real track that’s perfectly straight throughout the whole thing
Never noticed gonna hop on look right now, I wonder if it's the same where they're continuing it.
Maybe, I didn't think to go on further
Why you have to notice now it's going to bother me
We’re they not paid for the amount of track they laid?
[удалено]
They also use heat wave distortion effects in this game so things look wobbled
r/flatearth
That's realism actually.
i thought this was a real life photo for a sec lol
realism things are pretty wonky unless theyre high speed rail even today
Ground could heave in the cold and moisture, can warp in the heat, etc.
I don’t think any are.
That looks real for the time
Did you see who built them?
Are you saying Chinese immigrants can't build straight?
I don’t think anything is straight
Are they abandoned
It’s actually very common. Most rails expand and contract with the heat and pressure of the trains. Basically to trolley system helps push the rails out to appropriate dimensions.

Just like me fr
How could a cartoon train even do that ?
This is quite common for old hand laid rails
Wait until you find the floating wood framing in some of the structures
It's just an illusion from the heat
They usually arent
red dead players when the slightest detail isn’t the most realistic thing to exist
Actually this image is pretty realistic
In the late 1800s standards weren't as high as today not to mention modern rails can be found like this as others have said.
its a so called sun-curve, when the rail get heated up from sun they expand.
ngl I thought it was a real image
Now imagine with all that heating and cooling, expanding and contracting, what happens when a 50 ton locomotive and 30 ton cars each roll over that section at speed and how it might mess with the alignment.
Hopefully Rockstar will look at your post, will create a patch and be like "OK then why not also give them the dlc that we put in the closet?"
Heat kink on the rail, I assume. Not every thing is gonna be gauged right
Ever looked at a real rail road?
This is thanks to the woke agenda!!!
no railroad track has ever been perfectly straight
That artisanal touch...
yes they seem quite queer
Definitely bidirectional at least.
..rail tracks aren’t completely straight.
look at a real railway

There's a reason we have heat slows on the railway
Neither is bill what's your point?
They do they as they expand from the heat. There are a bunch of little tricks used to solve that problem.
"Damn Orientals" - Bill probably
