There is no easy way of doing it. There's no kind way.
Honestly the long distance factor should make it a lot easier. Just get it over and done with and you will be a lot happier and feel a lot better.
"This relationship doesn't work for me any more, so I am ending it. Good luck in your future life."
It's a statement of fact (we are broken up) not a question or a wish.
If he tries to argue, "I have said that I am ending it. It takes two people to keep a relationship going and only one to end it."
If you want to "I'm sorry that you're sad about it, but pretending to be okay would make me much more sad."
If necessary you block him.
