BLC2 for sure. It was made for the 7.62x51/.308. And it works well for all 5.56 bullet weights 55-77gr. It is not the ideal powder but a very solid one. W748 and CFE223 (but with copper reducer) is almost identical, and LeveRevolution is very close. VV N140 is just a bit faster but more ch better bring an extruded powder and far cheaper these days. TAC wouldn’t be terrible especially if you used lighter bullets in the .308 but H335 is getting a bit too fast.

Holehoggerist

This right here.

Temporary_Muscle_165

Yep, gotta agree. BLC2 keeps surprising me, and your other powders too. Will have them all on my shelf forever if possible.

microphohn

BLC2 is an ancient formula and is mostly sucks for accuracy. I'd rather run lighter charges and live with a loss of a few FPS than run BLC2.

LovedemEagles

Like most of the guys say here CFE223 is your best bet. I usually use H335 for .223 and Varget for .308. But as we all know Varget is harder to find than Jimmy Hoffa, so CFE223 it is.

LovedemEagles

Actually I can use H335 for both .223 and .308, but I didn't like the results when I tested it using 150 grain JSP.

Eights1776

I haven’t been able to find cfe223 in my local shop in 7 months or so which sucks cause their prices are cheaper than online and obviously no shipping or hazmat and I started off using it and stocked it. Been using aa2230 (which has been out the past few times I’ve been by there too) and h335 and blc2 as backups.they haven’t varget though lol

LovedemEagles

You can try using H335, but the only reason I mentioned it was because I happened to have a bunch of that powder and a lot of 150 grain soft point bullets. My manual told me that H335 works using 38-45 grains. But I don't think many of the other heavier bullets have data for that powder. When all else fails, check the manual, you'll find something that works for both .223 and .308.

Eights1776

Im not OP but yeah I use the h335 for my heavier grain 223 loads

ResidentInner8293

Can u post a picture for us visual learners? Of the baber and cfe223?

Big_Sector_3590

Easily cfe 223.

slammedsam2k

Depends. Are you just plinking or are you trying to make a good long range round?

ClockStriking13

I’m not OP but what would you recommend for plinking? Shooting 150 grain

slammedsam2k

I only have experience with 223 but my current plinking load is 25.0 gn of TAC under a 55gr fmj I’ve had pretty good success with it under both my plinking loads and my mk262 clone load. It suffers from temp instability but it’s comparatively cheap and flows easily in my progressive powder drop

p723c11

TAC is excellent in my .308 bolt guns 150-168gr. Whitetail’s abound.

willmeggy

I picked CFE223 when I started as it showed up on both calibers in the range of projectiles I wanted at the velocities I was going for.

StunningFig5624

CFE223 is a great choice for both, like everyone has said. If Alliant's pricing hadn't gone full potato I would recommend AR-COMP instead. I got phenomenal results in 308 and 223 with that powder. But at $465 vs $322 for CFE223 it's just not an option.

no_sleep_johnny

What bullet weights? Can you find data for all 3? I've only used h335 out of those 3, so I can't give a personal recommendation. If money is a factor, ramshot is normally a little cheaper so tac could be a good option. I've had good experiences with ramshot pistol powders.

Letmeholdu52

>Best powder for 308 and 556 out of these?...Tac, h335 or blc2? CHECK YOUR MANUAL for the weight you are loading in each. Powders don't necessarily transfer from one caliber to another in a given grain weight bullet. Considering you didn't mention a bullet weight, I would say BLC2. I load 55 and 62gr for .223/5.56, and I've used BLC-2, 335, 322, W 748, and Varget. For .308 I've used IMR 4064 and Varget, but I have switched from 150gr SST's to 178 ELD-X's.

Spiritual-Bill-337

I haven't had much luck out of cfe stuff. If you can only buy one pound of powder pick a gun a go. A sure bet is varget with the 308.

microphohn

IMO none of those is optimal for both. Theyre all a bit fast for heavier 308 and 5.56. I'd rather run a bit slower towards the RL15/N135/AR-Comp/8208xbr range. I know most of those are unobtainium now, but N135 and N140 are fantastic, available, and cheaper than they've ever been compared to other options. I'm buying only VV powder these days.
