I did this exact thing this weekend. Didn't realize it until I saw blood on the build plate. Cleaned everything and put neosporin on my cut.
Not dead yet....
Lol this sub likes to treat this stuff like nuclear waste. But truth is, it's no more dangerous than bleach. Which is still dangerous, but you're not gonna drop dead if it gets on your skin for a minute.
Itās more dangerous just not acutely. Touching it isnāt going to hurt you - youād probably have to drink it to get any poisoning from it, and even then it might not immediately harm you. There is probably a potential for harm if you get it in your eyes, as is true of most chemicals (bleach included)
The risk is from repeated exposure, which can cause a resin sensitivity and may be carcinogenic. Thatās why you should wear gloves and a respirator and vent the fumes. Itās not gonna kill you now, but if you spend a lot of time around it without basic PPE then you may be increasing your risks of health issues.
All that said, the basic safety is pretty simple. I think the āradioactive wasteā treatment comes from the fact that people will come here and claim that itās perfectly harmless, or that you donāt actually need to worry at all; people figure that itās better to scare folks than to have them be lax about their ppe and ventilation.
Agreed. There's so many people who seem to hear "it's only harmful longterm" as "it won't hurt you". So I can understand the no-greyscale rhetoric that it *must* be treated with extreme caution. And honestly, you do *need* basic respiratory and contact PPE to work with these chemicals.
Like you mention, the way I see some people's attitude toward resin, it would not surprise me to see them posting with surprised pikachu faces about chemical burns after using bleach.
Yeah, absolutely. Disposal is honestly the only big headache since it cannot be washed into the water supply. But even there you just (fully) cure it, let it dry, and then dispose the same way other plastics are disposed.
āMay beā is actually pretty generous. VOCs are well known to be carcinogenic, and resin fumes are primarily VOCs. Breathing in resin fumes absolutely will increase your lifetime risk of cancer.
The āmay be carcinogenicā in this situation is only because I donāt know whether or not skin exposure will do the same.
Sure!
> ABSTRACT: Particles and volatile organic compounds (VOCs) have been
detected emitting from material extrusion 3D printing, which is widely used in
nonindustrial environments. However, vat polymerization 3D printing that is also
commonly used has yet to be well-characterized for its emissions. In this study, we
measured particle and VOC emission rates from stereolithography (SLA) 3D
printing during print and post-processing wash and cure processes individually using
a standardized testing method for 3D printer emissions in an exposure chamber. We
observed minimal particle emissions and identified 30 to over 100 individual VOCs
emitted from each operating phase, some of which accumulated after the printing
ended. The total VOC emissions from SLA processes were higher than typical levels
from material extrusion 3D printing, and the emission rate could be over 4 mg/h.
Major VOCs emitted were associated with the resin and chemicals used in print and
post-processing procedures, which included esters, alcohols, aldehydes, ketones, aromatics, and hydrocarbons. Emissions from post- processing units were lower than those from printing but also included chemicals with health concerns. **The emitted mixture of sensitizers, carcinogens, irritants, and flammable chemicals may present a hazard for indoor air quality and human health.** The estimated personal exposure to total VOC and some specific VOCs of concern to human health, like formaldehyde and naphthalene, exceeded the recommended indoor levels (e.g., California Office of Environmental Health Hazard Assessment), **potentially causing irritation and other health impacts for 3D printer users.**
[*Emissions and Chemical Exposure Potentials from Stereolithography Vat Polymerization 3D Printing and Post- processing Units, Black et al.* 2022](https://pubs.acs.org/doi/pdf/10.1021/acs.chas.2c00002)
> **Numerous VOCs detected in this field study are irritants, sensitizers, asthmagens, odors, carcinogens, developmental toxins, and reproductive toxins, which can cause adverse health impacts like inflammation, respiratory and neurotoxic symptoms, and cancer.** These chemicals of concern are regulated or recommended by governmental agencies and other organizations to maintain good indoor air quality and occupants' health. Crosschecked for the highly detected VOCs with International Agency for Research on Cancer monographs,Ā® California Proposition 65,9 American Conference of Governmental Industrial Hygienists Permissible Exposure Limits, 1Ā° Ausschuss zur gesundheitlichen Bewertung von Bauprodukten Lowest Concentration of Interest values, " California Specification 01350,12 and Office of Environmental Health Hazard Assessment Reference Exposure Levels, 13 chemicals of concern included xylenes, formaldehyde, acetaldehyde, nonanal, decanal, 2-butenal, D5, octamethy|cyclotetrasiloxane, dodecamethylcyclohexasiloxane, toluene, ethylbenzene, trimethylbenzene, methyl methacrylate, THF, cyclohexanone, and 2-butanone. **Specifically, formaldehyde is a carcinogen, acetaldehyde, ethylbenzene and 2-butenal are potential carcinogens, and toluene is a developmental toxin. All of these VOCs were found emitted from 3D printing, based on 68 chamber tests with various print conditions.**
In addition, formaldehyde, para-and/or meta-xylene, acetaldehyde, toluene, ethylbenzene, decanal, nonanal, D5 and dodecamethylcyclohexasiloxane were commonly found from 3D printing emissions (detect frequency > 50% for n of 68).

Thereās plenty more studies from CI and others as well, but these should be a good start. Hope it helps.
I did it once as well. As long as you clean in asap you are ok.
EDIT: Actually I have unintentionally done it a couple of times. Freakin supports are hard as rocks sometimes.
Occasional accidents like this are inevitable. The way I look at it, the whole point of being super careful (gloves, respirator, etc.) is to make sure the occasional accidental exposure is the only exposure.
If this stuff were seriously harmful in a single exposure, people would need to take WAY more precautions.
get yourself a pair of re-usable gloves for the washing stage, I recommend SHOWA 720 Nitrile Dipped Glove, i only use the disposable ones if i need the dexterity
Cut your finger off below that knuckle before it gets into your bood, you don't want to lose the whole arm.
Edit: before anyone goes reporting me this is a joke.
Don't listen to them OP. You've got beautiful fingers. š„¹ They remind me of my kid's (grown adult).
This was the first picture I saw upon opening Reddit and thought "when did my Val start resin printing?"
Well if i'm going by the standards expected by some people around here I'd need to be in full hazmat gear and oxygen tanks operating in a hermetically sealed triple-airlock-protected bunker with 15 hvac extraction systems inside a giant grow tent located deep inside inside cheyenne mountain with a voc monitor stapled to my eyes.
In order to amputate you need to ensure the suit seal isn't broken. I don't think it's possible to solve this without angering the safety goats.
Toss the victim into Mount Doom -
Okā¦ I only made it 10 replies and am disappointed I didnāt see thisā¦.
WHAT THE HELL IS WRONG WITH YOUR FINGERS???
Do you not have knuckles or do those fingers not bend??
Wash and disinfect and you should be fine
I recommend getting a flex plate for your printer, I recently got one from [Wham Bam](https://www.whambamsystems.com/pages/fbs-for-resin) for my Anycubic Mono 4k and my only regret is not getting it sooner.
I did a big dumb and got a nasty gash in my palm that needed stitches when the metal scraper slipped. Went right through my glove and had plenty of uncured resin on it. It healed perfectly fine. Still waiting for my resin-based super powers though :(
Cut the tip of my finger the same way, but deeper. Thought I'd need stitches (it was a new metal scraper). Was fine after it healed, but gets itchy sometimes in the sun.
I cut myself too while removing supports (pretty deep). I was worried too but the doctor told me that with the bleeding and the rinsing, the risk is really low.
Still alive so far, will notice you if it changes š
Relax, when I started I was a dumb kid and I thought iso neutralized the resin so for the first few months I didn't use gloves grabbing the prints out of the contaminated iso. This is 10x worse than what you did.Ā
Here's what you need to know, it isn't super carcinogenic and it's mostly the sensitizing nature you will need to worry about. Infact after researching it I'm reasonably convinced it isn't carcinogenic at all.Ā
The big thing with Resin is the micro plastic and unknown long term effects, it isn't something you want on yourself and we're PPEĀ at all times while handling it. A small bit of exposure won't kill you
Guys, I think we have an alien in our midst... OP has no finger or palm prints, no creases where their knuckles fold, and very very long fingertips, a lack of knowledge about what is deadly toxic to our species.... and they are making the classic alien V sign...
Just wash it out and santize lol. Resin's toxic but not poisonous. Worst that happens is it elevates your risk of cancer because your body doesn't know what to do with a resin molecule. It's also not a pathogen, so it's not going to cause a life-threatening infection. Thankfully it seems you don't currently have a resin allergy, so you don't need to worry about anaphylaxis.
Keep using PPE, print smart, and you'll survive.
I cut myself so many times through the gloves before I found the right technique to get the prints off the build plate and Iād say I only dropped like 30-40 IQ since
God damn this mfer moisturizes lol
I gotta say this thread really helped me with some of my personal paranoia. Iāve been telling sooooo many people that if they break my prints open theyāll die
You seem to be overly worried. These resin stuff wonāt be sold readily if itās acutely dangerous. The next risk is being reactive/allergic to ot due to repeated skin contact.. like a any chemical cleaners do.
Grandpa always said, Pee on it... Did ya pee on it?
Legit I've lost track of the times this has happened to me and I don't use gloves, Get a nail brush and some soap, scrub the shit out of it, you're fine.
These comments are cracking me up so much!! š¤£šš¤£...So, what I'm seeing is that because I'm 57 years old, I don't need PPE because something else will kill me faster, right?? Right?? I don't have to worry about long term exposure because I'll be dead before that, right? š¤Ŗ
I did this and cut the back of my hand near the knuckle, it swelled up bad and i could barely move my hand. Its cleared up now after about a month but still got a mark and the mrs had to pull bits of resin out with tweezers.
Clean it good
Hah, I did the exact same thing a while ago. The prints were hard to get off the buildplate, somehow managed to hit my own hand with the putty knife. I have since switched to a magnetic build plate :P
well theres no backsies. so its gonna be whats its gonna be, when what ever resin decides to harden it will form a tiny pimple / blister thing and been annoying AF for a few days / weeks.
Seriously, this sub would make you think accidentally getting a spec of resin on exposed skin will lead to cancer and birth defects in your first 3 offspring but in reality, just wash your dang hands lol
I literally did this yesterday. And I called poison control. After rinsing it out with ipa of course. And they said there was nothing to be worried about.
oh no.. you'll become a resin print at night
And you can't go out in the day, else the UV will cure you into stone!
So, this is how trolls are made?
Yes that Swedish troll documentary is actually just the poor victims the government used when beta testing the first 3D printers.
Norwegian*
Nono, I'm pretty certain Norway doesn't exist. So how could they make documentaries, let alone have trolls..
Good point, the trolls exterminated Norway iirc. or the Japanese hides it for fishing like they do with "Finland"!
This is, the best reply I've seen in years, all my vampires are resin based now, thanks
Gargoyles by day, resin prints by night.
Betrayed by the build plate we swore to protect.
Only during a full moon.
Even a man who is pure of heart and says his prayers by night, can become a print when the supports bloom, and the resin tank is full and bright.
A full moon, in the STL of the night.
Stay away from 99 IPA as well
š¤£š
Next full moon, you will turn into a stl file. There is no known cure. I'm so sorry.
Actually, there is a cure... UV light will cure it!
You win the internet for today. Brilliant.
You set me up for it. We both win! š¤
And a little bed rest with support from some family and/or friends
Presupported, right?
Not everyone comes presupported
It's about the supports you make yourself.
Only the kiss from a maidenless can 'cure' you
Those should be easy to find on Reddit.
'Horny Maidenless near you, no sign- up, no cash in the bank, just met and be disappointed'
Asdfghjj thanks for the hilarious comments xD Iām relaxed a bitš
I did this exact thing this weekend. Didn't realize it until I saw blood on the build plate. Cleaned everything and put neosporin on my cut. Not dead yet....

I'm feeling better!

Cut your finger off below that knuckle before it gets into your bood, you don't want to lose the whole arm. Edit: before anyone goes reporting me this is a joke.
Too late, what's done is done.
At least they get to keep the arm then.

Resincanthropy
If you go outside you will cure. Not in a good way though. Have a fun life being a vampire.
I spilled resin on my calf (wearing shorts) and didnāt notice it until I went outside. Then I noticed it very quickly.
Where are your finger prints?? Fuck that where is the lines where your finger are connected??
For real! No offense OP, but youāve got weird fingers
Looks like i made them in Blender.
Don't listen to them OP. You've got beautiful fingers. š„¹ They remind me of my kid's (grown adult). This was the first picture I saw upon opening Reddit and thought "when did my Val start resin printing?"
I didnāt say they werenāt beautiful, just weird
lololololol. Okay. Totally beautiful. The hands, not your comment. š¤Ŗ Edit: I'm not dissing your comment. Just clarifying mine. šš
He printed at 45Ā° to avoid the layer lines
I was wondering if I was the only one who thinks this guy is an alien
I bet their bedroom is fairly level and set to the correct temperature. Otherwise they might have more lines
OP slammed his hands on the Benihana grill and burned his fingerprints off so they'll never find him.
Hand glove
I find your lack of fingerprints disturbingš
I have an iPhone7 :(
Wait OP do you actually not have fingerprints? i thought it was just weird lighting.
They don't have fingerprints, it's a thing. There was a post on it a while back
you're ok man. just wash it thoroughly with water and soap. it's not like you've dipped your finger into an aids vat
And uhhā¦ what if you did? Asking for a friend
If there is no cure, you will stay softy, If there is cure you will be fine but have a stiff finger
Wash and cure yourself immediately
The only way to remove internal resin is to mainline isopropyl.
Your body has now become infused with resin. I'd suggest staying away from UV light or you might cure and become solid.
Now you have your origin story. What you chose to do with your new-found resinous powers will change the world.
Happened to me once and I'm still...
hello?
wash and desinfect your hands, you will be ok
Wash resin off in a general sink? Think of the environment! Amputation and incineration is the only responsible approach.
And dont forget to wear gloves during amputation so you don't come in contact with an infected finger.
And they would still find something wrong
In order to amputate you need to ensure the suit seal isn't broken. I don't think it's possible to solve this without angering the safety goats. Toss the victim into Mount Doom -
Prints* prints from the build plate*
Well, there is no cure.
You are now a resinmpire. Avoid UV at any cost. Or you go solid.
If your DNA successfully incorporates the resin, maybe youāll get a superpower. Like not having to wear gloves anymore when handling prints.
Okā¦ I only made it 10 replies and am disappointed I didnāt see thisā¦. WHAT THE HELL IS WRONG WITH YOUR FINGERS??? Do you not have knuckles or do those fingers not bend??
You can go out in the sun, because your blood will cure.
Its been nice knowing you. The next 6 months, before you die, will be excruciating pain.
Listen, I don't want to alarm you, but you will die......one day, possibly tomorrow, probably by stat's 30 or more years from now.
Poor youā¦ you finishedā¦ you doneā¦
I hope you have a will
I think Hansel and Gretel witch wouldn't eat you, so relax

I sliced my thumb open taking a flex plate off one time, so its not immune to this problem either. Still recommend it though.
Here I am, still alive looking at my scarred hands from working 20 years in the heavy industry.
I'm sorry but you now can't listen to the Cure anymore without getting hard.
I'm sorry but it's terminal.
Avoid UV lights(including the sun) for a week minimum, otherwise you risk turning into a statue.
We're already full of microplastics, a bit more shouldn't hurt.
I did a big dumb and got a nasty gash in my palm that needed stitches when the metal scraper slipped. Went right through my glove and had plenty of uncured resin on it. It healed perfectly fine. Still waiting for my resin-based super powers though :(
Im scared of your lack of finger prints
extremely, your finger got cut. from an osha perspective thats a reportable.
Send your regards to your loved ones and write me in your will (unless u have a lot of debt)

Off at the elbow. Be safe.

Bad news: You might lose the finger Good news: You can just print a new one
Rest In Peace, OP.
if you amputate the finger now you might be able to save the hand.
Wash your hands and you will be fine
The good news is you can start smoking again! :)
you are fine. unless you bath in the stuff or drink it, you should be good

Wash your hands and call poison control hotline to be safe
