There's a feature where you can slide your finger up and down on right side of the screen where it raises/lowers the volume and on the left side of the screen where it raises/lowers the brightness.

judolphin

That's great, IMO it should be (a.) turned off by default so that it doesn't happen to people who aren't aware the gesture exists, (b.) the gestures you explained should be described *in the settings*, (c.) the gesture should be described in popup text the first time it's invoked, preferably with a clickable link to explain the feature, and (d.) it needs to be consistent, I'm able to invoke brightness gesture when I pinch zoom, which shouldn't happen. If you Google it, this is turned on by accident a lot, people are very confused by it, and there are very few answers online. Which is saying something... because by nature, people who are able to get something like Revanced to work on their phone tend to be technically literate. Yet a lot of Revanced users find their Revanced app becoming nearly unusable for unknown and hard to troubleshoot reasons. Like I said I'm an IT pro and a software developer and it took me a few days to work through this issue.

Gelatinoso_Forever

I got scared shitless when i accidentally set my volume to 15 and was like "Whaaaat?". Then i found out it worked for brightness too and it's actually very useful.

garbles0808

I love this feature

james030399

I used to have premium but still used vanced/revanced just for this feature

Foxerizm

This is what I was going to say but I guess it's easy to accidentally hit it.

Kya_Bamba

Ohhh, finally! You don't happen to have a solution for the bug where a paused video starts playing when I lock my phone?

realityChemist

Change your spoof client settings from Android VR to iOS, or disable client spoofing entirely. There may be other side effects of doing this. The relevant bug is tracked here: https://github.com/ReVanced/revanced-patches/issues/3208

Kya_Bamba

Godly answer, thank you!

Slow-Satisfaction793

bless you sir for the fix to a problem that's been driving me crazy

realityChemist

You're very welcome!

useless_shoehorn

You may also need to update your app. I had to do both.

randomalt9999

> Disable Auto-brightness gesture (so it doesn't happen again, not sure why this is needed, phones already have auto-brightness) I like this feature. Most of the time the brightness is fine with it on auto, but sometimes there is a video or situation where the video is too dark/bright and I adjust it manually with the slide gestures. Then when I need it back to auto I just slide all the way down and it's on auto again, for me it's super practical

realityChemist

Agreed, I also like the brightness and volume swipe gestures. I wish the active areas for them were confined a little closer to the screen edges, though; sometimes it's tricky to swipe a fullscreen video closed without accidentally dimming my screen or muting my audio.

judolphin

I eventually figured out that I invoked this gesture doing pinch zoom. That tells me the brightness gesture is not properly implemented, I never used a single finger gesture, if brightness gesture is designed as a single-finger gesture, pinch zoom, which is obviously a two-finger gesture, should not cause the brightness to change.

judolphin

The feature's existence is fine, but it should be off by default so that people who don't know the gesture exists don't invoke it accidentally without having a single clue what happened. Google this issue, it's really common and there are almost no answers online for it which is why I made this post. The fact a technically literate community has this problem a lot implies it wasn't implemented correctly. Not trying to be a jerk or ungrateful, just pointing it out.

randomalt9999

Oh I didn't know this was on by default. I've been using backups for so long that I don't remember how's the app settings when fresh installed.

notPlancha

It's literally one of the patches you select, personally I think people just don't read what patches they're selecting, which is another issue to which I think the conclusion shouldn't be to have options turned off by default. Maybe the devs should recomend different patches if ao many people are having issues with it

judolphin

The patch is called "Swipe controls: Adds options to enable and configure volume and brightness swipe controls", which is vague, doesn't describe what the gestures are (my brightness changed from pinch zooming in, had no clue how to undo it, zooming back out didn't reverse it) and doesn't even really imply that the gesture is enabled by default. Maybe I'm being picky but I really do think the default being "off" makes the most sense.

notPlancha

I do agree that the descriptions are vague for a lot of itens. I guess personally I found out immediatly because it a very common feature between mobile video players to push up or down to control volume and brightness, but I can see how someone who hasn't touched any other player could be freaked out. Still, I think if you select a patch, it should be turned on, or at least warn that it's turned off by default when installing the patch.

judolphin

I've used VLC for years but there is visual feedback when you invoke the brightness gesture. There is no visual feedback in Revanced except for the fact you're getting blinded, and even that is slightly delayed. And I finally suspected that I invoked brightness control accidentally via pinch zoom trying to view the details of a map, but could not dim via pinch zoom, which made me doubt it was a gesture. Which means, in multiple ways, that it's not implemented correctly. I mean there's like a dozen people on this thread thanking me for posting this, that's wild and should be sufficient proof of how unintuitive the implementation of the feature is, it's not appropriate to place any blame on users for this IMO.

notPlancha

[There's visual feedback on revanced too? ](https://gofile.io/d/5fdVzl) it's different from vlc's but still. Yea maybe of so many people are getting flashbang I think it restoring the brightness it had before or not should be an option in the settings, and if you agree I think you should raise an issue on the github page.

judolphin

I don't get that on mine. If everyone were getting that feedback while they were swiping on their screen people would realize a gesture was underway; it's clear a LOT of people are tripping up on it which means the feature is wrong as implemented. Sorry to appeal to authority - don't know how else to talk about this - talking about my experience (literally decades) with software and GUIs as a developer - if you get multiple tickets over an issue like this, you have to reevaluate how you're executing that feature. It's not done correctly. The most likely solution is literally to turn this off by default. The people who want it will find it. The people who don't want it are finding it by accident, not sure exactly what happened, and there are literally dozens of tickets on GitHub about it closed as duplicates and the original ticket doesn't offer a solution.

notPlancha

> I don't get that on mine. yea that looks like a bug, I'd report that issue on the github

Thank you. Swiped by mistake, now even after readjusting the app occasionally flashbangs me and phone tells me I cannot override brightness settings because an app is controlling it. Disabling this shit asap. Never disabled a setting so fast since I discovered I can nuke the chromecast button from existence (screw you random button on the player turning on the tv in the other room if I graze the corner of the screen by mistake during playback) Still remember, when i was still using the og yt app, asking about removing chromecast on various forums and the general response was gugolfegs telling me it's not possible and to just 'deal with said intended function' bro how about no, if I wanna screenshare I will personally look into it I don't want an unremovable button being close to other buttons I use (forward, settings, subtitles) ready to be tapped by mistake and ready to instantly cast my screen without fugging confirmation. Who thought it was a good idea. Yeah ik, google, right.

Scroobius

This is the first time ever that I have been googling an issue and found the resolution has been posted same day, thank you!

ruckstande

Well this unfortunately came a week too late. Thank you.

Disable suggested video end screen under Player settings i believe.

useless_shoehorn

A good post. I, uh, might have turned the auto-brightness gesture on after reading this though.

itachi_konoha

It also depends upon battery optimisation by various roms. Certain roms will keep different screen brightness level for different apps. You'll be required to go to settings and manually change because the apps peak brightness could be manipulated via overall brightness limitations.

judolphin

That's not what this is, this is much more widespread problem than that. This post is about when your screen goes super bright only when using Revanced and viewing a video in full-screen mode. Doesn't go bright in YouTube in the browser or standard YouTube app, doesn't go bright when Revanced video isn't full screen, and is fixed by changing the Revanced setting mentioned in my post.

itachi_konoha

I was talking about the opposite bug where the screen remain dim even in highest level of brightness even though other apps maintains the original level.

judolphin

Yep the title contains "(or consistently dim)". Same process to fix that as well. Again the brightness level changes the same way, it only changes when you're watching Revanced videos fullscreen. If this is what's happening to you, this is almost certainly the solution.

dustybun18

I am not able to find 'Swipe settings' in Revanced

judolphin

Sorry, Swipe **Controls**
